The Heat is a good disc to learn a hyzer flip. When pulled off it will glide dead straight for a long ways with a slight fade at the end (the glide 6 on full display). Add some more power or throw flat and you have a reliable turnover disc as well. Change release angle to anhyzer add some beef and it's a good roller. A very useful disc to bag.
Great video. Very clear and detailed tips on achieving this type of shot. The “trial and error” aspect of this is so true. It took me several attempts with many discs to achieve this shot and now I rely on it heavily for long straight shots. Currently using my Axiom Insanity for this shot. Love it.
Thanks! Definitely some trial and error but glad you got it figured out 👍 It’s amazing how much this shot type can improve your game for tree lined courses
Related to hyzer flips, Lat64 Fuse and the Pure. Trust me on this one on wooded lines. Oh and the Havoc for distance. Definately an underappreciated distance driver. Will wear in really fast tho.
key part is "released with force" he shares in beginning of vid... great stuff overall and as always this cat provides me with great content/ideas... social level player here and over 60 - I love to play and do so on average a week given it is great exercise and so much fun... play with one of my sons that was a D1 athlete... so we can show that force needed thing - he can throw the hyzer-flip every time even though he only plays disc when in town and we go do a "double" round together... ah, but I have a 160 Mamba in my bag so maybe I could do said throw with that given JD pointing out the lighter weight is beneficial
Great video! Thanks - I understand what the Pros are doing with those big Hyzer Flips now! Working on this shot and finding the weight and speed of discs that I can throw this, because for the tunnel shot, avoiding OB, and shot shaping this shot can be used a lot and is needed. Thanks!
I've recently been practicing a lot and have gained some power. A mako3 used to always just fly dead straight for me, but now when I put some power on it it'll start to drift right. It's not from beating them in though, I've got two brand new champion ones. I find I need to put just a little hyzer on it now to get it to go straight. It is a bit finnicky though, because with too much hyzer it'll just hold the angle, but too little and it'll drift right. Practice, practice, practice I guess.
Nice to hear you’ve been getting some extra power! Although I recommend the Mako3, I definitely know what you are talking about. It really is a straight flying disc, but if your release is off that day, I would steer clear. Personally, I’ve really been enjoying the King Cobra for straight gaps. It’s a 4-5-0-2. I have a few of them (but only carry 1 at a time) and I’m always amazed at how stable (I.e straight it flies.). Such a good hyzer flip disc since it doesn’t drift off to the right as much as the Mako3. The 2 fade makes you think it will fade, but considering it’s a 4 speed, it balances the flight out. Anyways, just thought I’d let you know! I know you don’t often hear of the King Cobra, but it’s like a slower speed roc with a touch less fade.
The DX wraith that I bought when I first started playing got completely mashed from me spiking it into the ground over and over and was the first disc I hyzer flipped once I actually learned how to throw. I will always remember my first hyzer flip, 250' dead straight, then it finally flipped a bit more before finally slowing down and coming to the ground. It ended up outside circle 2 long on a hole I had never even gotten pin high before. I actually retired the disc for sentimentality sake, I need to breaking in some pro Wraiths now that I think about it.
Been learning these with an innova wolf. Very understable disc. I can get it to flip up and finish right, so I'm learning to balance the hyzer angle. Once I've got this down better I'll try on discs with a bit more stability, hopefully drivers soon.
I am very new to disc golf, so please correct me if I am wrong which I very well might be. To get a lot of distance with an overstable disc instead of an understable disc, you can use an anhyzer flip. It works the exact same as the hyzer flip, only that you have to lean upwards instead of downwards, and if I am not mistaken, it will start going right, flip up straight, and then go to the left, so pretty much the hyzer flip, just everything is flipped
Hi JustDisk! This is a very insightful video! While I don’t agree with all your strategies, I will be sure to pick up some of your techniques the next time I’m at the course! What are your thoughts on the Mako3? Personally I really love the grip and straight shot. Keep up the great content😄😄😄
Thanks Greg! Yeah my wife and I are big advocates of the Mako3. For experienced players and beginners. We actually did a video on it if you haven’t seen it yet! Here is the link - ua-cam.com/video/nlqxaLz3M4M/v-deo.html
Thanks for the feedback Isaac! That’s exactly why we make videos, for appreciative people like you! Glad some of our videos are proving to be helpful 👍❤️
First, I really appreciate the clear and informative videos. Been playing for years, badly, and these have helped a ton. My question is this: As someone who throws almost exclusively sidearm, is there anything different or special I need to focus on to get the flip? I can't seem to nail it. For the record I throw mostly MVP line, focusing on Streamline. Thanks!
Nothing to add except I’m in the same boat, 100% forehand due to a shoulder issue, can’t seem to learn the hyzer flip but I can reach 400 ft with a flex shot (using a champion boss for my main distance driver).
Thanks Zach! It’s really based on power and having the right disc. You may want to try using a lighter and/or more understable disc to get a little more flip. You can also try not releasing the disc on such a big hyzer angle so that it requires less force to flip hope. Hope this helps! 👍
I've got one of those friends who isn't good, but sometimes still throws frustratingly good shots despite his lack of knowledge, arm speed, or practice. I threw his discs the other day and realized they're incredibly understable and he was accidentally throwing hyzer flips the whole time, haha.
I like the video but my understanding is that absolute max distance drives are thrown on big anyhyzer. also, is there evidence to point to that lighter discs fly farther? I would agree they're often less stable but objective more distance?
Hey Josh, thanks! Hopefully we can provide some clarity. Absolutely max distance drives are not thrown on an anhyzer. It used to be that way up until sometime in the 80 or 90’s, but it’s now been proven that the hyzer flip is the shot type that gets you maximum distance. That’s why if you watch long distance drives, the guys are always spinning around and releasing on disc on a hyzer angle. They most likely are using a very understable and light weight disc. It also makes sense when you try to think about it. A flex shot starts the disc turned over and then fades back. Where as the hyper flip needs to first flip up to flat, then turn, and then fade back if possible. As for lighter discs flying farther, it’s true but only to a certain degree. This might help - discgolfmentor.com/heavier-or-lighter-disc-weight-for-distance/ Thanks for your questions! 👍❤️
@JustDisc I was at brp last weekend hyzer flipping the bolt about 320ish. How can I get that 400 range? when I'm throwing, I'm usually throwing flat. Should I take my hyzer flip and point upward? Seems like the pros are point up and to the left when they throw. The disc flies that way for a second and just cuts right.
So if you cant match the speed required it wont achieve this right? My light boss does this but my destroyer or nuke I cant get to do it probably because they're heavier and I cant achieve a 12 speed correct?
You are correct! Any disc can flip-up, but it’s just dependant on the speed, angle of release, stability and weight of the discs. For instance, pros can flip up overstable discs like beaten-in destroyers, but a player with a lesser arm speed would have trouble. Therefore any player can do a hyzer flip (even if they have a slow arm speed), but they would need a more understable disc that’s probably at a lighter weight. Hope this helps!
Very good question! A disc doesn’t actually need any turn to be able to flip over/turn over. If more power is exerted to the disc (i.e higher than the 5 speed it’s meant for), the disc will definitely start to turn. Especially considering that this disc has almost no fade. Hope this helps!
Very good question! It’s actually a lot harder to throw a disc flat than it is to throw it on a hyzer and have it flip up. Hyzer flipping allows you to put power into the disc while maintaining a straight flight. Where as, trying to throw a disc straight with some power will almost always result in inaccurate shots and/or the disc turning over too much
We would kindly disagree! The video clearly describes what is required. Although most shots are not released on severe hyzer angles, they are still considered hyzer flips and are good illustrations
Hyzer flip is not a shot type. It is a disc choice at a certain speed with a hyzer shot type. You cannot choose to hyzer flip a disc that won't do it at the speed you throw it.
These videos are fantastic. Good for beginners but also good reminders for experienced players. Thanks!
Thanks Jesse, we truly appreciate the compliment! 👍 Enjoy!

They break in well. I have an ecostar that is quite flippy now. Great disc.
My favourite shot! I love that it can be used for gaps without sacrificing distance. But I do still struggle with keeping the nose down!
It can definitely be difficult to always keep the nose down, but at least you are aware of it! With practice you’ll get there 👍

Try the latitude 64 Bolt disc. I can't hyzer flip crap but that disc.
We’ll check it out! 👍

The video keeps showing a Mako 3…but the flight numbers on that are 5/5/0/0…so not understable. How are you getting that to flip?
Very good question! A disc doesn’t actually need any turn to be able to flip over/turn over. If more power is exerted to the disc (i.e higher than the 5 speed it’s meant for), the disc will definitely start to turn. Especially considering that this disc has almost no fade. Hope this helps!

Why throw a hyzerflip with an understable disc when you can throw a stable disc flat?
Very good question! It’s actually a lot harder to throw a disc flat than it is to throw it on a hyzer and have it flip up.
Hyzer flipping allows you to put power into the disc while maintaining a straight flight. Where as, trying to throw a disc straight with some power will almost always result in inaccurate shots and/or the disc turning over too much

Great explanation but the majority of the shots shown here are either flat or annie releases, that might confuse someone trying to learn

Hyzer flip is not a shot type. It is a disc choice at a certain speed with a hyzer shot type. You cannot choose to hyzer flip a disc that won't do it at the speed you throw it.
There is NO way to teach a person discgolf with words...
You have to feel what correct is... Then you can start describing techniques
