I love this recording so much. I listen to it almost everyday now. It has a vibrance that is very rare. Thank you for all the joyful moments. I wish more people could know of this brilliant recording.
Grazzie Maria.
Thanks David for the whole record! Marvelous. When my 8 years old son hears MJ PIres playing Mozart, he identifies her immediately! Absolutely great to share those concertos with him, thanks to you! We have more recent records, but since the beginning of her career, she is absolutely fabulous. I can listen to this record again and again.
For many people this is the most enjoyable of all Mozart's pano cncertos as it is light hearted from start to finish. One can also feel the composer in a happy frame of mind doing something that both greatly pleases and amuses him at the same time. Nowhere is this more obvious than in the lovely finale. It is Mozart having one last fling at enjoying his youth before growing up to face the realities of the world. And nobody, but nobody captures this spirit of carefree enjoyment better than Maria Joao Pires. She is the master of Mozart's keyboard works and this is proof that she can see right through him and reproduce exactly what he is feelig no matter which of his works she is playing. This is genius of a level attained by very few people in any walk of life. Grazzie Maria.
Still, I love listn to Mria João Pires. She treats the keyboard so smoothly thr her fingers seems like velvet of it. It makes her performance very enjoyable. Thanks David!
Bravo. Young Maria shows beautiful Mozart's No.17 concerto. Although the recording is not of high quality, It is obvious that young Maria have been loving Mozart since nearly 40 years ago.
E' una pianista meravigliosa. Mi fa rabbia constatare che il pubblico si entusiasma alle esibizione circensi di Lang Lang e ignora grandi pianisti come Pires, Sokorov e altri.
Wonderful! The orchestral playing is just as good, and perfectly complementary to the soloist. I have to find this recording. Is it reissued? EXCELLENT!!!!!!
I have never understood why she has never recorded a complete mozart’s piano concertos cycle. In my opinion she is among the greatest Mozart interpreters ever such as Fischer, Serkin, Anda, Horowitz, De Larrocha and Badura Skoda.
Come si fa rendere grazie a Mozaet che da una vita mi accorda favori di godimenti gentili e lieti a colmare la sete dell'anima che chiede gioia di vita?Ma forse da qualche parte sarà in ascolto dei miei ringraziamenti.Ciao,Amedeo.
Each pianist is unique, and, all of them have incredible gift to master their art, very complicated. So, when you listen to a pianist you have an interpretation of something unique in essence. That said, between the amazing precision of Rubinstein that gives us a very pure sound, but almost no sensibility in it, and the real technique of Maria João Pires associated with sensibility, communication with the spirit of the piece. I choose Maria João Pires :)
I completely agree with this. other end is Lang Lang with extreme sensibility he displays. Maria Pires seem to combine and intermix both with her unique style. Not sure if this teachable ? I sure hope it can be.....
Jim Cha I agree :) I'd say it's not teachable, or it goes farther than teachable, it goes to the soul, the spirit of the listener that can find its own unteachable ability in her/his own art... The pianist learner, having such a great professor, will find her/his own way to express the art. Something teachable is good for instance in some level of mathematics, sciences, and so... Yet at one point, if we want really make progress we must find our own way... That's the kind of lesson such a great artist as Maria Joao Pires give us! Thanks for the hint :)
What a delightful rendition of this jaunty concerto! Both the orchestra, under Theodore Guschelbauer, and the ever-surprising Maria Joao Pires have a light touch -- just right -- and the result is perfect. Thanks for uploading this.
@@waggishsagacity7947 Theodor Guschlbauer (b. 1939) conducts the Chamber Orchestra of the Gulbenkian Foundation of Lisbon. As specified above. The old but beautiful Erato recording.
Thank you so much for the share David. Have always been a fan of MJP. Wished could find more of her recordings back in the 70s. By the way, you might want to consider buying "ClickRepair", (www.clickrepair.net/), it probably should make the listening experience better. :-)
I know that. I mean this recording should be remastered now or in the near future in the form of LP. If it were pssible, it would surely be a dream of audiophiles.
Not to be picky, but you should get ClickRepair, and run LP recordings through it to remove the pops and clicks. It's available in a 20 day full demo, and works amazingly, without altering the sound. I've digitized my best LP's at 24/192, and used ClickRepair to remove the clicks. It's a must have piece of software.
THe LP captures the real song while cd and other digital media records a translation from the original sound to a digital language that the hardware can understand and play. As usual, I also believe that something can be lost in translation, but I honestly don't think that this diference matters, maybe it is so because I've bon in the digital era. thanks and let's enjoy Mozart.
What i do know is that on the mp3, the low sounds next to really high sounds are ignored for compression purposes. Like when you hear something very loud you can't really hear the low sounds that are taking place at the same time, so they cut it out. That may be a reason.
I have an idea: why don’t you copy and paste the score into adobe Photoshop, and send me 125 image files? Then I’ll make this an important priority. Thank you.
To T So. How many greatest pianists are in the World? What a non-sense to say, that Pires is the greatest, or greater than Rubinstein, or Horowitz is greater than Uchida, or Pollini is greater, than Andras Schiff. Or the living ones greater than the dead ones? The people stand that Franz Liszt was en extremly good pianist, or Chopin as well. I think, there are a lot of greatest pianists of the World. A greates one need to be perfect technically and he or she has to be an original conception on the composer, and the number, that plays, meanwhile he or she must be loyal to the past, and must be find something new. Take this question dialectically, if you know what this is, it's original sense. "That is the secret." :-))
***** Dear Friend, my english a little bit poor, maybe this is why I don't understand what is unfair for you in my opinion. I realy would like to know, your remark touched me very badly. I think whenever we publish our opinion this must not be only a personal feeling, but we have to give something more to the public. So what was my unfairness?
Pues a mi me parece que Pires toca mejor que muchos de los que mencionas, precisamente por las mismas razones que alegas. La tecnica es lo de menos en Pires. Lo suyo es una combinación de transparencia y sentimiento, tan dificil de lograr!!!
I love this recording so much. I listen to it almost everyday now. It has a vibrance that is very rare. Thank you for all the joyful moments. I wish more people could know of this brilliant recording.

Anton Wills-Eve Obrigado to Maria. :-)
What a very fine comment ! Kind regards
the adagio on the other hand is is heartbreakingly WA Mozart, and a gift to open your soul .. and, difficult to play
This concerto is also tied to Mozart’s pet starling who could whistle one of the themes.
Great, thx. Pires is 1 of my favorit Mozart interpreters
thanks for all this notes about this LP. The orchestra and conductor are above all critics . This must be a very rare album.
Still, I love listn to Mria João Pires. She treats the keyboard so smoothly thr her fingers seems like velvet of it. It makes her performance very enjoyable. Thanks David!
Her playing is outstanding. Comparisons are odious-nothing
else compares to her.
Thanks for sharing this marvel!
My best discovery this week. What a marvelous performance ! As always many thanks David.
Such a wonderful Music and Sound, glad to hear a LP and not a CD, thanks for sharing this wonderful musical experience!
full of grace, and love, thanks, there is hope.
EXCELLENT... Un vrai délice !
Merci pour cette intelligence musicale...
This is splendid! Thanks very much, Mr. Herzberg.
***** My great pleasure!
les basses sont une merveille... quel jeu.. MERCI
I fully second Vladimir's comments. Wonderful playing and artistic expression throughout this sumptuous performance. Thank you, Maria!
She is genomenal forpianist for Mozart, how its wonderful to listen, many thanks!
Such a beautiful slow movement
Those few bars of piano solo in the second movement, after the orchestra comes to a full stop, are just sublime: 15:53
thanks for posting.
I remember Gould played the beginning of this concerto at Steinway "Glenn Gould-off the record."
I am so happy I could hear whole version by Pires.

Simplesmente perfeito!!! Dá para reclamar: Maria João, Abençoada Mãe que te Concebeu!!
This pianist is special! EVERY note sounded so pretty.
Don't think I've ever heard this lovely Concerto, so wonderfully performed by M.J. Pires. Thank you!
The performance is graceful and articulate at the same time. This recording should be remastered in the form of LP, if possible.
