I love Kempf playing Bach! A beautiful playing technique combined with heart and soul. His playing touches my innermost. I ususally miss these things in today‘s world-class pianists.
One of the finest of his craft - and in his tender reading very humane - and not full of glittering bravado as so many young "virtousi" today. Less glamour - and more substance would do the music world good today.
I completely agree with the praise for Kempf, but I doubt that there was really more "substance and less glamour" in the world of yesterday than in the modern one, although we certainly have our unique set of problems. There was plenty of shallow nonsense back then, but most of it has been filtered through the sieve of time, which is probably why, for example, a good deal of Liszt's compositions are not performed frequently anymore.
@@raymondgood2359 - Nonsense. You need to learn to listen deeply. He has a large body of wonderful piano work. You probably don't know them because you've dismissed Liszt as "shallow".
Maybe Mr Kempff’s style differs from today’s standards, but Bach spoke to him and he responded accordingly within his own frame of reference, just as everyone must. In today’s times we also appreciate the viewpoints of artists whose interpretations are quite different, but Bach was so gifted that his music transcends such differences. Some have said that not only was Bach the greatest composer who ever lived, but is the greatest composer who ever will live. Thank you for providing this reminder!
Wilhelm Kempff was 80 years old in 1975. He had lived through two world wars. He shared personal wisdom and vulnerability with us in these brilliant mature performances.
In the "Composer's Room" in Our Father's Kingdom of Heaven, all the composers sit around, chat, give subtle hints to today's young composers and enjoy each other's company. When Bach enters, they all go silent, rise and not sit again until J.S. has picked his spot and taken his own seat.

Classical music is not just about the notes; it's about the stories and emotions woven into each piece. The way a simple melody can convey a range of feelings is truly remarkable. It's a form of art that speaks directly to the heart.
This great master has been overshadowed in recent years by more showy younger pianists. But his interpretations are always absolutely authentic and within the style of whatever composer he is playing. I have recently rediscovered his complete Schubert sonata cycle and cannot imagine how it could ever be bettered.
Thank you for this wonderful playlist. Such a refreshing change in an age of 'typewriter' Bach. Such tone and wonderful phrasing with tempi that allow the music to breath. I can't agree with other comments here re Liszt's music. Kempff himself played Liszt and the view of Liszt as some kind of charlatan has long been put aside. Liszt himself knew his direction had to change from the one of travelling virtuoso in the 1830s. He responded with compositions that are as honest about the nature of art in music as anything from other sources.
Benjamin Briten thought Brahms a 'terrible composer" -- what one composer thinks of another is interesting but has little objective value. A great composer has a very defined view of what is good or beautiful and other composers who don't fit their mould get slandered by them.
Kempff made some wonderful recordings of Liszt's music. Two Legends and Annees de Pelerinage in particular. I believe on set dates from the 1950s and the second t the 1970s when Kempff had turned 80.
I doubt that Brahms was aware of the entirety of Liszt's output... Liszt is sadly known today for 2 or 3 showoff piano pieces but you shall be impressed he also composed Masses, Choral Music, symphonic music, chamber music, Opera, organ music, piano and violin music, lieder, and in his late years Liszt practically became somewhat of an avant-garde artist playing with exotic harmony, parallel fifth based compositions and even atonality. He was incredibly prolific. Liszt is one of my all time favorite composers.
If only Bach could have had a modern piano at his disposal, this might be a sample of something he might have done with it. Compare this to various organists’ interpretations. My favorite is Ton Koopman’s interpretation, but several others’ might be rated just as highly by other listeners. It’s a real tribute to Bach that this and many other of his works can be so inspiring in so many different ways. Even Bach’s title of this piece is a fitting description of what he meant this to say to the listener.
Funny that with all of that beautiful music and the fact that Bach is pretty much the top of the mountain of great composers, the most replayed part of this video is the Gluck transcription (which is also beautiful).
