She makes it look effortless when, believe me, playing a Mozart piano concerto is anything, but. What a great performance by this pianist. Very soulful playing supported by flawless technique. Bravo!
The best made music video on YT. The close ups, loving intimacy, closeness among these artists and love for Mozart and the 🌹 lovely, soulfull Maria, all so aligned, connected together. Thanks to all who participated to make this performance so great.and unique!!
What orchestra? There is no orchestra shown on this video, only a few instrumentalists who try to look like they would be actually playing along the prerecorded music. Where is the conductor anyway? This is a big fake video and the only thing that is real in it is the music. Not any of the fake playing.
I love Maria Joao Pires. She remains an unforgettable player of Mozart's piano concertos.I must say tears brought to my eyes when I hear from her❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Vielen Dank liebe Maria
There are so many pianists who the world has recognized as great but I ask you, how many immerse themselves in trying to convey only the music and the composer’s voice. When you hear a performance like this you have to say that Mozart would be thrilled and enamored with such a perfect vessel of interpretation and feeling. Every phrase and nuance is carefully and intuitively caressed. This kind of music making makes me fall in love with the world again.
The whole concerto is wonderful. The second movement in particular is magic! Dearest Maria, you make people better with your playing. How can we thank you? We all love you so much!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
There's something very special about this woman. This wonderful video captures her genuine aura, without affectation, that has its roots in her total immersion in the music. What a beautiful example of humanity in this world of awfulness. Listen to her performance of Schubert impromptu op. 90, no. 1, sublime, transcendental beauty
You're so much right, and her genuine relation to music made that now that's she's about 80 Years old she still is a beautiful lady. Her face tells a story about how she "lives in music". Back in the years as well as now...
I simply love this woman... In the most respectful way. Out of many great pianists of the world, I choose her to be my special favourite... Thank you, Maria João Pires!
This must one of the finest ever filming of a classical performance. Not just great playing but so artistically conceived and executed. One can see the rapport between Maria Joao Pires and the orchestra. Compelling viewing and listening !
What I've always loved about her playing is the sense of a natural phrasing. Nothing ever seems forced. A perfect approach for Mozart...and any composer, really.
I must say, this video is phenomenal, and not only because of her astounding performance, but there's a certain "If Stanley Kubrick did classical music" feel to it all! LOVE IT!
Love those little exchanges between Pires and the bassoon player in the third movement, with those tiny smiles of enjoyment. Like musical flirting. My day was made with this wonderful performance. Thanks for posting this.

Absolutely lovely. Such an unusual, very artistic video, in black and white which in this case gives more depth, also beautiful close ups of the musicians.it is so clean, just pure contact between Mozart, the musicians and oneself. Check 22.23, her first smile, then the musician with the large wind wooden instrument lightens up, there is an open smile, open admiration and affection for her. Her face changes too, the re seems to be a playful sort of exchange of affection between them. Beautiful human moments! Her thoughtful, lovely face in the beginning is lovely to watch too, what beautiful and soulful eyes too. She is a marvellous, sensitive pianist, i love her Mozart piano concertos the best. She moves me deeply. Thank you for posting!
It seems that each musician is maintaining contact with Mozart and they are totally engaged in a spiritual relationship with the soloist . What a glorious and unique performance. I regret not being able to see the ensemble from an audience perspective.

I'm glad to know I am not alone in this feeling. Some things (great music) are better to share only with others who "get it", or at least want to, or not at all. Sometimes it's just better to "keep it in our own temple". Well said. Thanks. And I am also a pianist. 78.
I am also an amateur pianist. It is a love since childhood. I can enter a big saloon full of people, but if there is a piano there, this attracts my attention more than anything. And if the lid is open... oh my god! It is like a magnet.
The cameraman captures some really touching moments of Pires during the opening tutti. I've always found her to be very touching in general: a mixture of dignified passion, a deep thoughtfulness, and an underlying sadness.
Yeah - I saw it on TV decades ago and it's great to see it here on UA-cam. It's a pity the director missed the Maria's opening phrases in the first movement.
Thank you so much. I saw this on Channel 4 and VHS'd it. The tape broke as I played it so many times. I have searched the web for years and now it's there!! Fantastic Thank you again
This is incredible music! One aspect of this video that I like is the showing of the musicians' faces. This gives us a clue about the emotions and feelings they experience while making this beautiful music.
What an amazing way to shoot a film of a piano concerto! In almost black and white with a slight pink tint towards the top of the screen sometimes. Unique. A brilliant pianist, and you rarely see her hands. Everyone is dressed in white, seemingly. The camera focuses on faces, and in each shot, there is no one in the background - just an off-white wall behind the musician. Mostly one musician at a time. You are forced to study the emotions on their faces and match them with the sublime sounds. The effect is to make you listen more intently. You never see the whole orchestra. Never more than three musicians at any one time. So strange, and truly wonderful.
SHE is an amazing pianist in every respect.Simply love her composure & absolute professional way she moves through with such sincerity & patience until the finish.
Beautifully played. Captivating. Of course, Amadeus Mozart inspires such artists because his compositions are so gorgeous. Melodic. Dramatic and soothing to the ear and heart.
After enjoying this beautiful recital I will not be able to find fault with Mozart in not permitting the virtuoso pianist to retire from the stage! Thanks, just like a lonely traveller gratefully remembering the dreaded yet short-lived lightning when he lost track in pitch darkness!
Quelle merveille !
Thank you so so much for posting this video from my absolutely preferred pianiste. It is beautiful to listen to her so exquisite playing and understanding of music, as well as observing her.
She is a national pride for us, the Portuguese People! I think she did the best, retiring from stage to appreciate her life. She is the best Mozart player that I know. She is quite well. Ela está bem. Thank you very much, ADGO!
It takes a moment to realize that Ms. Pires is keeping all her emotions inside, letting them emerge through her performance. I love Khatia Buniatishvili's open expression of her feelings, and her performances as well. I love Lang Lang's expression of his feelings, and his performances, too. I love Ms. Pires' performance, and it's inspiring to watch how she puts all her energy into presenting the performance. Great job by all the musicians, and the director of the film.
Like first light at dawn, this music opens the eyes to new promise and all the wonders of nature. Evocative of belief in the beyond and powers beyond observation, this concerto tugs heart strings, pulls at the nostalgic, and wakens dormant loves, lives and wonders!
Yours is a most articulate and evocative description, very well written and said. I wish I could copy it to send it to a young friend who's depressed, and who might be encouraged to listen to this music, as your words would help him.
Pires played the Beethoven 3rd at Verbier this summer (2023), and it was wonderful. She is even more beautiful now, than she was in this video. Such a gifted talent!
Well there are more female pianists in this world! Not to forget Haskil/ Alicia de Larrocha (who played a lot of Mozart as well) , Lilly Kraus, Ingrid Haebler and many more. But certainly Pires is very special in many ways.
Very interesting video, because it shows the cooperation between soloist and instrumental groups and communication between the groups- which is one of the interesting traits in Mozarts instrumentation.💗
I love how she presents herself in such an elegant and dignified manner and doesn't lean into overexaggerated facial expressions. I find too much facial expression to be distracting.
A free spirit with a lot of talent. She has teached young pinanists to come in touch with the soul of playing and reach beond technique. You can compare a recent recording here: ua-cam.com/video/cyn0EeA3SMc/v-deo.html

This (to me) is the most precious Mozart recording ever 💯 And that’s not a small thing to say 👌
Still feel the same way a year later 💯🎶❤️
@@GourSmith I feel the same
@@flavioferreira5924 And I still feel the same way, too.
She’s so graceful and passionate.
An angel playing piano!
Lovely looking the opportunity of enjoying the music of the young Maria
Quelle merveille !
Thank you so so much for posting this video from my absolutely preferred pianiste. It is beautiful to listen to her so exquisite playing and understanding of music, as well as observing her.
Yes, Kathreen, her Mozart flows so beautifully and i am also fascinated just observing her.
I think she did the best, retiring from stage to appreciate her life.
She is the best Mozart player that I know.
She is quite well.
Ela está bem.
Thank you very much, ADGO!
Muito obrigada, ADGO!
At least we have records of her performances. She will never be forgotten.
Pelo menos temos registros de suas apresentações. Ela nunca será esquecida.
Yes, go on my dear, and thanks !
Yes, so beautifully said, Philippe. She is magic, fascinating, touches my soul deeply both with her lovely presence and playing.
Such a sadness in her eyes - but the sadness of an exemplary, enlightened soul...merging with the sublime music that Mozart has given us.
You’re genuinely blind. There’s nothing but absolute love and involvement with the music. The music has sorrow, but not her.
She had lots of sorrow it does show in her eyes, so profound.
bravo Maria beautiful harmonia fantastic
Pires played the Beethoven 3rd at Verbier this summer (2023), and it was wonderful. She is even more beautiful now, than she was in this video. Such a gifted talent!
A sudden surprise in the candenza of 1st movement for recalling Beethoven’s 3rd concerto… to be honest I’m in love with it
Tx Adrian that you made this happen (with M. J.Pires)
Extraordinaria interpretación de Maria Pires....Gracias.
Thanks for this video. Love it.
Great performance and so far the best female pianist on earth!!!
Well there are more female pianists in this world! Not to forget Haskil/ Alicia de Larrocha (who played a lot of Mozart as well) , Lilly Kraus, Ingrid Haebler and many more. But certainly Pires is very special in many ways.
This is the best rendition on UA-cam! THANKS! And if you can reach her, tell her she wrocks!
Very interesting video, because it shows the cooperation between soloist and instrumental groups and communication between the groups- which is one of the interesting traits in Mozarts instrumentation.💗
@ADGO thank you for sharing this exceptional and valuable video. I enjoyed very much.
I love how she presents herself in such an elegant and dignified manner and doesn't lean into overexaggerated facial expressions. I find too much facial expression to be distracting.
Linda, inteligente e talentosa! Maria João Pires é um fenômeno :)
What a beautiful woman. And the playing is a match. Love the 80s big hair.
1. Allegro maestoso ( 0:00 )
2. Andante ( 13:30 )
3. Allegro vivace assai ( 19:14 )
End Credits ( 25:26 )
Toujours un grand plaisir avec Mozart. Merci
I don't care about her masterclasses. I care about her playing. And at that age she was really cute.
It's hard for me to appreciate this because I want to see her hands pretty much at all times.
A free spirit with a lot of talent. She has teached young pinanists to come in touch with the soul of playing and reach beond technique. You can compare a recent recording here: ua-cam.com/video/cyn0EeA3SMc/v-deo.html
Sublime performance by all!
Ottima esecuzione bel filmato, musica sublime!
I love when the piano starts and the camera is showing the flautists
She's so beautiful😍
Her eyes... They smile :*-)
extraordinary ...
