I did it!! Great video! I've been waiting for an installer for a week or so but got tired of waiting, saw this video and replaced my own bathroom ceiling light. Thank you!!
I was frustrated for a while trying to put my bathroom fixture up to the point i was going to pay someone to compete the job until i seen this video and it worked. THANK YOU!
Awesome video! So many videos showing, "connect black to black. connect white to white" YAWN. Finally a video that shows how to deal with a RED wire! Oh, and my new light fixture manufacturer's written instructions weren't helpful either :-( But then, JEFF TO THE RESCUE! Thanks so much!
Was about to hire an electrician because I could not figure it out. Scoured the internet and could not find anything until I saw this video!! Thankyou so much!!
I want to THANK YOU, I purchased a new home and several of the rooms have the plate cover over the ceiling and we have to use lamps through out the house I went to Lowe's and I purchased a ceiling light and I asked my husband to put it up this weekend I watched your video and decided to give it a try. I PUT THE CEILING LIGHT UP AND IT WORKED....... I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THE LOOK ON MY HUSBANDS FACE WHEN HE GETS HOME
Excellent Illustration of Steps provided during the Video . I have attempted all various techniques and failed at, Watched too many different You tube Videos of Installing Ceiling Light Fixture and still Failed UNTIL I watched your Video and came thru a Eureka moment. My Ceiling Power Outlet is similar to the one you have shared in this video and tears of Joy are flowing thru my eyes at the moment after understanding what I should have done correctly to get the New Ceiling Light Fixture to work with my Electrical Outlet in the ceiling. I was connecting 2 Black Wires with the Red Hot wire and the Switch ON/OFF was not working. Watching your video I learned that the 2 Black wires should be simply capped OFF and returned back into the Electrical Outlet. Thank you so much for Sharing .
Thanks! Your video gave me the confidence needed to tackle an electrical project I thought I couldn't handle. Very simple. The actual light fixture was harder to assemble than the actual electrical part.
Thanks for sharing !! Was of great help !! I knew nothing about wiring at all and had to install ceiling ligth for my parents and took me 10 mins tops ;) You made my day and theirs !
Thank you so much!! This was my very first light fixture installation and I was stuck on how to mount the fixture to the ceiling. I completed the second installation in 15 minutes. Thanks again!
Great demo. I'm planning on upgrading to LED ceiling lights that look similar to these. The prices have really come down on LED fixtures. Built in bulbs that pretty much last for life.
Thank you for this informative video. I have a question. Why not join all the black wires together with the red wire? Instead of not including the black wires?
Thank you. Your video was very descriptive. Your instructions are very clear, and it shows all the steps in the process. Your video helped me a lot since I have never installed a light fixture.
I took forever on the first try. Was trying to install the bracket and light fixture same time and was frustrated because I couldn't see the junction box holes. I realized how stupid I'm after watching this video. Installed the mount to junction box and just pushed the fixture up the long screws as shown in the video. I didn't even use the tap but that's a neat trick. Thanks for the video
I am a DIYer and have replaced several light fixtures. The trouble I have is getting those screws through the keyhole. You made it look so easy. How do you know which set of holes to put the screws in and do you have any tips to share on lining the screws up for the keyhole?
I don't usually leave a comment on a video that I've learned something from but I can't do that to you. I didn't necessarily wanted to know how to install a light fixture. I took mines down and couldn't remember how to put it back. I seen where the screws go and finally, after many months I got my light fixture up. It's been so long since you uploaded this I don't know if you will read it but thank you.
Do the ground wires need to be connected to the green screw, or can you just wire knot the house ground and the light ground together? Hope the makes sense.
Thanks for this Jeff! I want to replace my kitchen's fluorescent ring light with a modern hanging light. Do you think this is possible? Is it probably similar wiring even though it's fluorescent? Thanks!!
Jeff, thanks for posting. I have four wires coming out of my junction box, Ground, White, Black and Red (I believe you did as well in this video). How did you know to connect the red wire to the black wire in the light fixture? Thank you.
9:13 put the safety screw not too tight. i had this kind of lamp, had its glass fall on the floor, break apart. the safety screw should be turned tightly, as tight as possible. thankfully the floor was carpet so the fall of the glass didn't break the floor
+fdsewr fdsghfdwe no you can definately break and crack the glass super easily by over tightening it I've done it once or twice but if your safety screw isn't threaded on enough you can easily move the nut on the nipple to allow a more secure connection
Hi Jeff, I would like to install recessed lighting. I bought a gizmo to cut the holes, but would I need an electrician to do the wiring? There is no overhead lighting in that living room, so I assume there is no wiring in the ceiling, although there are electrical outlets on the walls. Thanks!
depends on your comfort level with wiring. If you're not comfortable and worried about safety I'd recommend getting a licensed electrician to do the work...worth the peace of mind.
I installed two of these today and did not use a wire nut on the ground. What I did was wrap both the ground wire from the light and the ground wire from the house under the green screw and tightened. This should be ok?
Going through the steps, I have my old light fixture removed and hanging down by the wires. I don’t have an obvious ground wire coming from the junction box. My house is old, is this possible? I was determined to do this as DIY but I may need an electrician after all ..
what if the decorative knob is attached to the threaded stem on the end, and you must find a hole three inches up under the glass to thread the stem into??bob fisher
Thx you so much, great video. Most tips and know how I'm very familiar with. However, wished I had your camera tip, when I uninstalled the ceiling fan. Still trying to figure out all the wires, lol
Hey my ceiling light just fell off a couple days ago luckily on my Bed during the day time. The part where you screw in the rod is not connected to the light fixture like yours. Any help would be great thanks in advance.
Beast Mode whew!!! Glad you're okay. That would have hurt. The rod needs to be screwed back into the bracket and secured with a nut. If you watch my video or another one like it you'll see how the rod is secured. But feel free to keep me posted and ask any questions.
Thanks for the fast reply. So the bracket that you screwed it into well mine isn't attached to the light fixture any more. So can I just get a longer rod and put it threw the fixture and screw it in the junction box? If they sell them at the local store that is.
Hi Jeff! I am wondering if there is a way for me to keep my fixture that is currently in my kitchen, but just change up the shade for a design change. Do you know of anyone that sells replacement shade that will fit most fixtures? Are there standard designs? Or is every mount different, therefore no shade can guarantee to fit? Thank you!
You might be able to make a custom fixture. I've seen many tutorials. It's not too hard and you'd probably get something that'll look better than anything in the store. Thoughts?
my ceiling light has 2 hot wires?red and black are live, power coming from both?it blew my led light and won't work with new one installed, the light won't shut off when power turned back on?
We just got some like this about 6 months ago and already they are flickering. The people who installed them won't come back to help us fix them. I think they might just need to be unscrewed from the nob in the middle and have the bulbs changed, but I'm not sure. Do you know?
Jeff i just installed the cieling light but i used my old cfl bulb then realized it was bright enough so i switch to led bulb but i encountered a problem. the bulbs wouldn't turn on. if i change 1 led bulb to the cfl. it turns on... wierd. any ideas? thx in advance.
Some electricians don't turn off the power at the breaker but they are pros. Personally, I want to stay alive and don't feel comfortable doing any electrical work without turning off the breaker or removing the fuse.
+EvendimataE When I was renting an apartment, the maintenance guy would always flip the switch off at the light and put duct tape over it without turn off the breaker. The first time, I thought he forgot so I asked him. I've pickled those bad habits from him now that I'm a condo owner but I wouldn't recommend shortcuts of safety. Also buy an volt meter to test if the voltage is hot at the wires before untwisting the ties..
I hired a handyman years ago to replace an old (Montgomery Wards!) fan in my attic. He didn't turn off the breaker, and when he touched something in the fan with his screwdriver he flew back about three feet and landed on his backside! He got quite a shock and it scared me, but he survived. Then he sheepishly asked me to go downstairs and turn off the breaker.
What if I only have a red and a blue in the ceiling? The blue was connected to the black and the red was connected to white in previous light. Does that mean the red is the neutral wire?
If you don't see a bare copper wire in the junction box you'll have to ground the wire to the junction box, especially if it's metal. Is that the case swistral1
There's something that you just brushed over. Why didnt you use the black wires in the junction box? I don't know ANYTHING about electrical so that confused me. Logically i would have connected the black wires from the light to the black wires in the junction box. I wouldn't connect the red wire to the black wire. Can you shed some light on why the red got connected to the black and the black from the junction box wasnt used? Thank you!
I transferred my kitchen light upstairs to one of the rooms. there was only two wires coming out of the ceiling wall which I connected to the only two wires from my light, then covered them with wire-knot and it works just fine. now I bought a new ceiling light from amazon that does not have much directions, it is from fuloon. This other room which my new light is gonna go in it has more than two wires coming out of ceiling wall and my light has only 3 entries (no wires) how should I install my ceiling light?
I figure the black and red hot wire from the old fixture came apart quickly. Probably were not tightly fastened by previous owner and I didn't notice when I took it apart . All is well and my home won't burn down lol. Thx I knew it didn't make sense.
this is so weird. I got all the way to the end. And the center threaded nipple sticks out too far. There's a small gap so that my end cap won't sit flush with the globe. Don't know what to do. Had to take the globe off, and now have an unfinished light fixture. It works, but i can't secure the globe.
Use the electric tester to see which is the live wire coming from ceiling. Connect this to black wire of light fixture. A bare copper wire coming out of junction box/ceiling is your ground wire. Connect that to the bare copper wire from fixture. And the remaining one is neutral.
I know this video is a few years old but I am hoping you are still monitoring the comments. I don't see a ground wire coming from the ceiling. How do I attach the ground wire from the new fixture to the metal ceiling box? Do I even need a ground wire? And why?

Thanks so much Rude Won for telling me about your project. You totally made my day, I love hearing success stories :D
tape trick is a great tip! i've been trying to hold it up with my head. lol
yeah .. done that a few times :)
Thanks so much ! We had to search the web to figure out why there was a red wire and what we needed to do with it. This video helped perfectly!
Thank you so much!! This was my very first light fixture installation and I was stuck on how to mount the fixture to the ceiling. I completed the second installation in 15 minutes. Thanks again!

How did you know that the red wire was hot and connected to the black wires on the fixture, and not the black wires in the ceiling?
Very helpful video, thanks. I bought that same fixture today at Lowes. Now to install.
Thanks! You saved us the cost of an electrician!
Thanks to your video I can now change my default fixtures for pendant and more modern fixtures. Good video.
👍😍Thank you!! Bless you. I had no one to call and I needed to know this info. I’m hanging a light fixture myself. BLESS YOU !!🤗💞🤗

thank you so much this was very easy to see and to know what I have to do tomorrow
Thank you that helped us a lot to fix ours for the first time!
I always confused the ground wire but this video I can see clearly...thank you
I'm glad i watched this before I buy a light fixture 😂 I'm def not ready
Excellent directions, well lighted video and good sound. And the blue tape tip will be useful too.
Awesome video!! This makes this seem much less intimidating!
Good instructions! I've done this before, but I'll do it better next time having watched this.
My pleasure to help any time Bill Jordan, thanks for watching the video :D
Awesome video! Thanks! It was very easy to understand! You are a great teacher!
+Lauren Petrov thank you so much, that's the greatest compliment I could every get ☺️
Thanks so much! I used your video and just finished installing my new light, easy peasy!
Do the ground wires need to be connected to the green screw, or can you just wire knot the house ground and the light ground together? Hope the makes sense.
Why do older light fixtures have the light bulbs laying sideways like that. I’ve always wondered.
Thanks for this Jeff! I want to replace my kitchen's fluorescent ring light with a modern hanging light. Do you think this is possible? Is it probably similar wiring even though it's fluorescent? Thanks!!
Good explanations and useful tips.
love the tutorial, easy to follow. thanks
Great step by step video! Super easy to follow. Thanks 👍
What is the yellow cotton stuff inside the new fixture? Do you take that out?
Thank you so much! Didn't have to call my father-in-law after watching your vid!
can you installed it vertical to replaced a vanity light fixture?
What was the rationale of using the red from the ceiling for the blacks in the light. Can’t I just use the black with the black from the light?
Jeff, thanks for posting. I have four wires coming out of my junction box, Ground, White, Black and Red (I believe you did as well in this video). How did you know to connect the red wire to the black wire in the light fixture? Thank you.
Great Video Very Thorough
Very nicely done.

Great job! Well communicated and shot. Thank you so much.
I broke mine trying to change a lightbulb. Thats why im here lol

Thanks bro

I installed two of these today and did not use a wire nut on the ground. What I did was wrap both the ground wire from the light and the ground wire from the house under the green screw and tightened. This should be ok?

Have a bathroom light that has a silver unscrewble ring with solid globe. No screws to remove ring or globe. How do I get it off?
+Christi J sometimes you can twist the globe counterclockwise and down
is it not safe enough to turn off the power from the switch only...does it really have to be from the breaker?

one more piece of information. The entries for the wires on the light are each marked individually one as "L", one as "N", and one as "E".
8:35 if you came here to figure out how to reattach the dome.
Thanks I will try your procedure out.
Glad to help Bill Wiley. Keep me posted on your project :D
how do you know which 1 is neutral wire or hot wire?
Neutral is white. Always.
Very helpful.
Thank you
My light fixture did not have any bolts attaching it to the ceiling. It's completely different.
Excellent.
Jim Gallant thanks :D
I figure the black and red hot wire from the old fixture came apart quickly. Probably were not tightly fastened by previous owner and I didn't notice when I took it apart . All is well and my home won't burn down lol. Thx I knew it didn't make sense.
Glad to hear all is well swistral1 and your safe!! Great job figuring it out.
That's the exact same light. :( I want the inter lights. I hate those overhead lights. Thank you for your video.
I have a red and white wire coming out of celling plus black and ground
Is this still considered modern or is it dated?
this is so weird. I got all the way to the end. And the center threaded nipple sticks out too far.
There's a small gap so that my end cap won't sit flush with the globe.
Don't know what to do. Had to take the globe off, and now have an unfinished light fixture.
It works, but i can't secure the globe.
Good stuff!!
Thanks Andrew, hope it helped.

How can you tell the wires apart from an old house with old wires
Use the electric tester to see which is the live wire coming from ceiling. Connect this to black wire of light fixture. A bare copper wire coming out of junction box/ceiling is your ground wire. Connect that to the bare copper wire from fixture. And the remaining one is neutral.
