- We review the new Nissan Pathfinder to discuss the good and bad and technical changes. While SUVs are a dime a dozen Nissan tries to balance out features, style, and drivetrain to attract buyers. This three-row competes with Kia Telluride, Honda Pilot, Ford Explorer, Toyota Highlander, and Mazda CX9, which will you choose?

Kia will never make a V6 that can top the bulletproof Nissan VQ
As a tech for a local Infiniti dealer, the day when the final Jatco CVT is no longer on the road can’t come soon enough. Lol
Damn the porn bots made it to savage geese. Mark has truly made it.
As a tech, how hard do you think it would be to get one of these trans to work in a maxima? They have the same platform and engine so i’d imagine it would fit. But the programming idk.
Incoming Mitsubishi techs thinking the same 😂
@@_zigzak I hope they eventually bring it or some variant of it to all the Nissan/Infiniti models.
I’m replacing a CVT in a QX60 rn for the first time and learning everything I did I didn’t actually need to do and made a lot more work for myself. Lol.
I’m hopeful though that they’ll get rid of these giant paperweights though.
Unless the warranty time sucks, I’d think you’d miss them going away!
Savage geese quickly because my favorite car reviewers. Mostly because all of their B-roll looks like it is a blooper (in the best way imaginable). But when Jack leaped from the car before he knew what that ribbon was about KILLED me! These guys are brilliant
what is the reference of the ribbon?
When this thing was released a few months back, I knew it would be the turning point of my bad opinion of Nissan. It literally fixes most things that we hated about Nissan. Its good to see a brand listening and making a competitive product again.
Let's hope they make it in time before their complete bankruptcy
They n have d to dump Renault!
I really like it, it's out there trying to insist it's the best at everything, and it never is, but it cares about what you care about and it really shows.
What i love about this channel out of all reviewers i watch, they actually look under the car, and test the entertainment system. And just review the quality of the vehicle.
Nissan: the official brand of knowing a transmission on a first name basis
what does "knowing a transmission" mean?
Not anymore
@@kristians2704 Because nearly all transmissions were bad and failed in different ways, owners got to know which specific transmission they had in order to have productive frequent conversations with the dealerships.
Odd, verbatim the same twist of phrase as 2 other IDs on youtube. seems to me someone is trolling reviews for reasons unclear.
No one asked me but i will say it anyway. JATCO CVT.
We just put a transmission in my wife's '14 Rogue at 70k miles so seeing the shift away from cvt's is a huuuuge plus over the old Pathfinder.
You didn’t change the fluid that’s why it went out.
@@Natethegreat200c I wish, then the failure would've made a little sense. Was changed at 60k and still shit the bed. Nissan CVT's are hot garbage.
@@Natethegreat200c Toyota- Aisin added a planetary gearset to its CVT for a reason, it’s not the CVT fluid that is causing the issues.
@@Natethegreat200c I always see you defending bad cars, but do you have any proof for your point?
2 things Nissan fanboys always say while white knighting in defense of the Nissan CVT:
*Stop driving it so hard*
_you're saying these things are made of glass, okay got it_
*you have to do fluids flushes on time and with the correct fluid*
_the fluid used is far more expensive than regular ATF so you're flushing more often with more expensive fluid. That's what we call high maintenance in more ways than one_
The fanboys need to explain one thing: if jatco cvts are so great why did Nissan do away with the cvt in the new pathfinder? Why is it now a regular automatic?
I’m three months in on a platinum, agreed with the climate control and infotainment comments. But it is comfortable and much faster than the 2013 I sold.
How are you liking it two years later?
I’ve had my 2022 Pathfinder SL premium for close to 5 months, very happy with it. It’s been a dream to drive on road trips and gas mileage is good for the size of the car. The infotainment system is simple but works without any issues. There are convenient features I like: wireless Apple car play, remote start on the key fob, car seat friendly tilt, wireless charger, Wi-Fi hotspot, and more. I’m very impressed with this car.
What were the competitors in your case? The same they mentioned, Tellyride and Highlander?
Talk to us in 40,000 miles
a 2022 model and we’re still in 2021. sounds like false marketing bullshit
@@cc8530 literally everybody does this
@@cc8530 The model was released Summer 21.
Nissan has some great interiors. They are always just what you need and no gimmick crap. It’s basic and not outside the box but there’s no ridiculous surprises and it feels like a car you can trust and be comfortable in
Thanks savage, i have 22 Pathfinder and traded in my 16 Pathfinder, this new is like a luxury suv compared to the older CVT models.
Drives alot quieter and comfortable.
The 3.5 has been used for years from Nissan and for good reason. Its a great engine. Plus they gave you a traditional transmission? Way to go! I have always been a fan of Nissan and our 16 maxima sr still feels amazing after 5 years
no undersized turbo no cvt - should be reliable if cared for - the 4.0 in mt 11 xterra has only needed cam senseors brakkes etc
Personally, the thing that impressed me most in the whole video was Mark's X-Country Ribbon
The drivetrain is just why I would drive this.
With basic maintenance this will easily run 200k miles.
Thanks for the wonderful videography, writing and production. You guys rock.
"This is a calm, comfortable, and legacy-like experience - and when I say "legacy" I mean in a ten plus years old in a good way." - Mark
*Perfect,* because that is exactly the driving experience that I want.
It would have been nice to be "Legacy like" as in longitudinal engine layout and best in class ground clearance.
Exactly what I am looking for as well. All this futuristic stuff takes away the fun from driving IMO.
After several hundred videos, I’ve decided to add a “final thoughts” segment to my adult videos . Wish me luck.
Jokes aside, I’m thoroughly impressed at Nissans effort in escalating their line up in general. I was concerned they would steady out like Mitsubishi, but they are really competitive and I wouldn’t have considered this suv in the past .
Great content
1. The transmission skips out into neutral. 2. The hvac controls skips out. Mainly the blower. 3. The infotainment system freezes. 4. The front cowl under the wiper blades is an afterthought. Foam corners and such. 5. The air filter gets very dirty fast.
Nice move Nissan. Removing the CVT is the best decision you could make. Premium vehicles can’t have a CVT.
Good to see my beloved (begrudgingly, at times...) Nissan not only FINALLY doing refreshes, but doing a pretty nice job by the looks of it.
This channel is way underated, you bring the best reviews period.
That driving impressions section is hilarious 🤣 love it!
Love the channel! Ive owned a 21 Platinum since July. The one thing i differ with you on is the infotainment/gauge cluster. You never tapped the button on the steering wheel to change the gauge cluster View. It would have taken the round tach and speedo gauges out and sent them to the side with a more robust View. It also has full map in gauge cluster when you're in navigation mode and tremendous amount of additional information that is valuable and logically oriented in the modified gauge view. Great review guys. Excellent!
I just bought an SV and loving it except for the low front passenger seat. Do you also have a low passenger seat?
Also, did you have a problem with the AC that was mention in this video?
The most professional and informatic car review channel. The most underated. Better than doug, carwaow, and every car reviewer on UA-cam.
Keep up the amazing work
I'll remember to sit during my test drive, Thanks Jack!
Thanks for doing this review, you included a lot of information many of the others missed! I test drove one today and I have to say that aside from the history of the Nissan Pathfinder as one the the first classic Japanese SUVs in the US, the drivetrain and the off-road “capability” are what draw me. I do have a family and dogs to haul around, but I want the car to be a little bit fun too. I hope the fix the issues in the next iteration, I will be ready to buy.
Long time listener, first time caller - SG are there any plans to review the new QX60? Cross shopping higher trim pathfinder with the lower trim QX60 which has a bit more detail/identity like you mentioned. Your reviews help shape our purchasing decisions with all the nitty gritty. Top review channel by a mile!
Thank you S. Geese, Esq. and Jack
An excellent production and review. Thank you!
To think we could get a V8 pathfinder just a decade ago. Crazy
I think it was a decade ago that they introduced a CVT transmission and continue to use it despite how awful it was
That car is basically what the Armada remains to be
@@air-headedaviator1805 Armada is full size. Pathfinder midsize.
@@Ballista762 yes
@@JDMHaze 2003 Murano's got the first CVT's and then Altima's got them in 2007 and Nissan been down hill from there!!
another SUV for grocery shopping, watched this more for the SG element than for the vehicle itself and I'm glad I did because that wheeze at the piano black screen was golden
Most detailed reviewers online, agree with your opinions, own 2023 Nissan pathfinder SL 4WD, 8000 miles in again agree, V6, tech, comfort, styling has grown on me, very impressed overall. Three competitors are all over the road, like the exclusivity of the Pathfinder and “off-road pedigree.”
I think for what it is, it's pretty good. Not crazy about all the black like you guys but physical controls are always a plus.
They could have used all the transmissions in the world to replace their Jatco CVT, but it had to be the same one used by the Jeep Renegade. They went from glass transmissions to plastic.
Its a newer gen zf 9 speed and also its a good transmission. The reason why the Jeep’s 9 speed fails is because of the crappy transmission software. Honda also has a similar issue with the Pilot and Ridgeline.
The ZF 9 speed is way better of a transmission. And it isn’t just Stellantis, Jaguar/Land Rover uses the trans and Honda used to offer it.
They have updated the transmission but I tell everyone to avoid driving a 4 cylinder car with that transmission, the ZF 9HP isn’t meant for performance but for fuel economy that’s why more automakers use the 8HP for more performance oriented variants.
@@mxngosvision I have the garbage 9-speed ZF in my Chrysler Pacifica and it is the worst transmission I have ever had in a car. 5 years of ownership and mutiple software updates and it is still jerky AF.
The ZF9 you're referring to is licensed from ZF and built by Stellantis, so they're not identical.
Test drove the mdx with this garbage zf 9 speed and odyssey and they were so bad that it was a total deal breaker.
Thanks for doing regular vehicles too, gents.
Overall I liked this vehicle - drove it as a rental. Pretty nice overall! quiet, drove OK for a tank. Though agree w Jack - not greatest seats for my body.
Thanks for making a good video about my new spawn hauler
I owned one Nissan but after dealing with endless quality problems, and the extremely poor experience with their dealership service departments, I would not make that mistake again.
Not a segment I have any interest in, but I feel confident recommending one of these having watched. Nissan included everything you'd want without gimmicks, and no CVT.
Nissan can't kill their current gen CVT quick enough. My wife's inlaw gifted us an SV trim level Sentra, and even with the cost of ownership completely removed from the equation, the CVT technology makes think about leaving the thing running with the windows down in a busy parking lot nearly every time I have to drive it.
🤣🤣
Sounds like they don't like you at all.
That doesn’t sound like a gift at all
@@OrlandoMGarcia like the worst one night stand ever. No excitement, duration or orgasm..... but ALL the STDs to deal with until death😂
Sell that junk and use the money to pay down your other cars if you haven't already. Or go kn vacation. That thing will die soon
I agree 👍 Being an owner of a rare factory optioned Pathfinder V8 that was available from 2008 to 2012. There's something strange, magical, and a little perverse stuffing that Armada 5.6 into its smaller sibling 🤔 This torque monster runs like Crazy Eddie on crack 🤯 Its smaller platform makes it nimble, precise, and very maneuverable. With about 160k on the clock, it's been very reliable 👌
Very attractive and comfortable . Would indeed choose it over its rivals. Kia and hyundai are out due to their recent recall history over serious engine issues and fires.
As ever, your reviews of generic NPC mobiles are balanced and interesting! Thanks for doing what you do.
NPCs out there doing honest 9-5 work. They deserve comfortable commute appliances!
One thing on the gauge cluster is the small triple line button on the steering wheel let’s you change the digital style to be wider to the outside and open up the middle to have a bigger map when you have nav turned on
Bingo! Everything looks good on paper and will impress in the showroom but it’s the details and integration… love your videos.
just saw brand new one in silver here in socal, thought it looked REALLY good! Lots of stance on the road and looks very premium for a pathfinder we all know
Hi. Thanks for the nice review. I own a PF platinum 4wd since sep-21 and I really like it. Some things do bother me but I like its engine and transmission is good. With the competition having also a V6 for the most part, where does the Nissan V6-transmission combo stand compared to the kia-Hyundai twins for example?or the other 3-row SUV out there? Thanks
Thanks for talking good on my new Pathfinder now I’m loving it more 😂
nice job calling out those brake lines. I'm glad you're paying attention under there
Very good review - fair, realistic and unbiased. Even better sum up at the end - no car is perfect and all cars in this category are mostly bland - but he doesn't trash them that gjust stating the obvious - if want true luxury, go buy a luxury car. If you want a good mid-size Crossover SUV, but this one or any of the others out there because they are all pretty much the same - big boxes, with decent amenities to Tote your family around.
2 thumbs up guys.
Holy crap, you guys look SO happy in a Nissan without CVT, it is double on comical! Marks body language is screaming sarcasm and enjoyment (that it's not a CVT shitbox).
Jokes aside, I think this is a little too late - they should've done this at least 2 years ago. Same with QX60 it shares base with.
They had to get rid of the old CEO Carlos first. He was an absolute idiot forcing CVTs that don’t last and wanted to turn Nissan into a rebadged Renault.
@@markm0000 well, that idiot made GTR, 350/370 happen, so it's not all that straight forward. He is shady and corrupt for sure, yet it takes 2 to dance.
I’m curious as to your thoughts of the base instrument cluster as the digital one (as well as the heads up display) is only available on the top trim. I know you have to review what you get but most people probably will get the three lower trims.
Best reviews in the business.
Another Great review guys... thanks to you I leased the Maxima Plat. 2018.... just switched it to a Rogue Plat 2021....I was thinking of the new Pathfinder... my wife owns a 2013 SV (soccer mom model)... but I'll keep it for 5 more years ;) not worth the upgrade.
I'm leaning toward this. That caramel interior, removable back center console, towing capacity, and the tried and true engine are enough to edge out the competition for me.
Vq35 is just a beautiful motor. So much personality
I appreciate that the beltline on this car isn’t ridiculously high like some others
The head room looks great, which is important to me. Did you feel it was more spacious or the same as competitors?
An improvement in your data would be the drag coefficient. Espcially for those big BIG SUV, it could help a lot to know if you double down in fuel consumption.
9:00 love the Hank Hill reaction. Perfect for this family man of a car
13:33 Nissan is all grown up, from "Hands on a Hard Body".(1997) to Commodity (2022).
Will you do a review on the '22 QX60, it's more luxurious sibling?
Great review! Nice stylish SUV with very adequate V6 and 2nd gen. 9 speed auto transmission. Nice interior and 44.5:" leg room driver and passenger room.!
I’m not saying other cars don’t have small issues like this, but Nissan misses the simple stuff like rubbing brake lines all the time. I just don’t see quality in that. It really makes you wonder about all the other stuff that’s half assed that you’ll eventually deal with during long term ownership.
Very good review. Just adding I liked because has some truck appeal in the boxy design. That’s something in the design that Nissan customers we’re looking for in the new Pathfinder. CVT gone is huge and new transmission is great.
If you read the comments- I loved the review and your conclusion. You seem to be pretty rational with the criticism. I was wondering if you could review the Subaru Ascent....that would be most useful for me and I'm sure others as well. Thanks!
Hello fellow savages!! Glad to see your back with another video. Wasn't sure if you geese flew south this winter😂😅
It's a nice rig, inside and out. I think Nissan is heading in the right direction as a brand. It's good to see them revamp their lineup with better designs, smarter engineering and nicer interiors. Thank goodness they are NOT putting those annoying CTVs in everything. At 50k for the top trim level, you start to run up against some serious competition from Germany which many buyers will turn to instead simply for the badge. The 35-40k trim levels will likely be their best sellers, possibly luring some customer away from the aging Honda Pilot.
If Nissan made a Pro4X version… holy hell. I’d get one in a heart beat. It would probably fit under the platinum, making it cheaper but more rugged! I’d buy one.
Cowboy Bebop callout was appreciated. :)
Now I’m wondering how hard it would be to retrofit that 9 speed to my maxima 😂
The answer: Go to your local dealership to trade it in.
@@Traysandor nah
Change that fluid often and pray the CVT God's blessed you with a good one.
@@OhPhuckYou i got 150k out of mine. which was abused often. Im not complaining.
@@_zigzak But you can get 200-300k out of a Toyota transmission without even changing the fluid. The skies the limit if you actually maintain it. I suspect the ZF will hold up much better than 150k.
Jack nailed it. I’m a Honda guy but don’t like the Pilot’s interior. Hopefully they will address it in an update/new model.
Best car content on the planet 🌎
I think this is the first Nissan product worth buying since a while
I’ve never owned a Nissan product. Looking to replace an ‘06 MDX w/230k which has been bulletproof, just normal wear and tear maintenance. Original tranny/Engine, am considering the PF. Would you think this will last 200K miles with routine maintenance?
*My wife has a 2016 Platinum edition after 2 years of the purchase Nissan call us for a transmission work(we had no issues )at 17k miles…..right now we have 70k miles no issues besides tires and brakes, nothing to complain*
Just test drove the Pathfinder, Highlander and Pilot and overall for ride quality I would choose the Pathfinder but the visibility was by far the worse. The interior dashboard was also the highest of the three along with the hood. It did feel the most truck like and that includes the interior space between seats.
Hey Mark! Why not do a review about the new 2021 Toyota Highlander XSE Trim!
Interesting video as posted on Car Questions.
The car was acting very strange during the AWD test.
Early 2000's Pathfinder was the best, couldn't top that.
I can;t tell if they are being sarcastic or not while they explain the truck lol. The smiles are throwing me off
My lease is up on my 2020 Kia Telluride. What the dealers are asking to remain in a Telluride is ridiculous. I’m about to pull the trigger on a Platinum trim with the Dark Green color and Chestnut leather interior. I can say it drives better than my Telluride.
Finally VQ engine paired with a true transmission
Using premium gas on my ‘18 gets you 26 mpg combined. Takes about two tank fills to allow the computer to adjust the timing. Why? Premium has more additives and a better chance the vapor will help clean the intake valve to cutdown on the carbon. The 3.5 is a gem of a motor. I’ve got my dealer on alert when a SL premium package comes in. They have really improved the vehicle. If they want to improve sales, improve the little defects.
No height adjustment for front passenger seat? Weak A/C ? Truck feel for a family SUV?
All Nissan needs to do at this point is turn the Armada/Pathfinder, independent rear suspension so the third row is okay for adults, and then make an Xl VERSIONNN, like the suburban or expedition max
Dang it/thanks - now I need to test drive this Pathfinder Buying cars for myself as a gearhead is easy, I mostly go with my gut. Now that I'm shopping for a 3 row SUV for our growing family which my wife will drive 80% of the time I need a damn spreadsheet to keep up with them all. The highlander is currently winning because I can own that the longest, allowing the longest time without having analysis paralysis over which piano black interiored SUV to pick 💯
Highlander 3rd row is laughably tiny.
I might buy a SL tomorrow. Worst part is the 3 yr 36 k bumper to bumper warranty, it’s like the 1990s again. Kia offers 5 yr 60k.
Looks like Nissan is at least trying to regain their former glory. Good review guys.
Is Nissan back? We'll have wait for the new Z to see. But this is promising
I've had a traverse for 5 years and I was thinking about switching to the new pathfinder or the Armada I have a maxima and I love
Great review, Nissan making products that are so much better, but the competition is fierce…
I love you guys you have me hooked
I just had this exact model/color Pathfinder for a two week rental. I was very impressed by the quality of it although I wasn't as impressed as these guys were with the takeoff. I thought the acceleration was kind of sluggish and it lumbered down the road rather than taking off quickly. It's very reminiscent of my previous 2008 Mercedes ML350. That said, this is basically a luxury vehicle and I kept wondering what could Nissan possible offer in their Infiiniti line that was so much better than the Pathfinder. I currently own a BMW x3 and the only thing the Pathfinder couldn't match was the quickness and speed. Also, a slight downer was that, although it was only a 2022, there was a slight sign that the leather isn't going to be the most durable over the years as the driver's seat seemed to already be losing some of its suppleness. Overall, a great vehicle even if it is a bit pricey.
Is there a smoother ride with the 2wd or 4wd version? (If any of you have driven both in the same trim/tire size) I don’t care about handling, only smooth over bumps. Ty!
1st gen and 2nd gen were pretty good trucks even though I never owned one but it was a real truck I think these car companies should go back to there roots and just give the vehicle a modern flair.. Old school with a modern touch!!
best reviewout there, and I've see them all LOL
Jack stays bumpin the bebop soundtrack
What ever happened to the BLACKWING video ? I’ve been waiting patiently!
So, do you expect the Direct Injection engine to need Carbon Clean-Out every 30k?
I bought a Nissan Pathfinder in September 2021. I have had three computer issues 1) the transmission pops out of drive and goes to park. 2) Total malfunction - was told the malfunction occurred when the battery went dead. The vehicle had 4,000 miles on it. 3) March 17,, 2022 the transmission pops out of drive and goes to park and when I try to correct the issue it goes back into d/m then when I start to drive to jumps back to Park.
