Today, Christian reviews two watches from Omega and Longines, courtesy of London Jewelers!
At $5,000 and under, we have a wide variety of watches that can be had that offer tremendous value for money. First up, we have the contemporary Omega Seamaster Diver 300M, introduced in 2018. It's a 42mm dive watch that still wears super well, in part because of the short lug to lug distance, and aided by the rubber strap which helps the lug to lug distance tremendously. We also see the return of the wave dial, here laser engraved into ceramic rather than printed. It retails for $4,900 on the rubber strap.
Next up, we have the Longines Heritage Classic "Sector" dial, a watch that retails for just above $2,000. It's a relatively new release, but one that plays into the historical elements of the brand and does so in a classic, but contemporary way. At 38.5mm, it's a contemporary size as well, smaller but still incredibly wearable which will aid in the watch's overall longevity. A dressy watch, it's also a total strap monster which creates an overwhelming sense of versatility that can't be beat for the price. - Навчання та стиль

The value with many Longines watches is often overlooked by us watch enthusiasts usual penchant for brands such as Rolex, Omega, IWC or Breitling.
But when you see what you get for less than €2500, put your watch snobbery aside and go with Longines.

Assume $5K is the limit, you just might be able to go find a Jaeger-LeCoultre Sector Dial. Even more beautiful than this sector dial watch, which is saying something.

I love Omega. One of the great things about them is that they don't pull the artificial scarcity BS that Rolex does. You want a Seamaster or Speedmaster, all you need is the money and you can get one that day... and speaking of that, since there's no scarcity, dealers will make deals. I got my Omega FOIS for $4k from an AD, and I think msrp is around $5k.

Nice watches my only gripe with the Longines is the 30m water resistance. Just because it’s got the looks of a vintage watch doesn’t mean it should have the drawbacks of one.
My gripe with the Longines (ya 50m water resistance would be nice too) is the 6 o'clock marker. The original shows less of the 6 which looks better. Obviously the original was smaller and because the sub seconds dial looks best half way between the bezel and the centre peg, with the bigger dial you naturally will have more of the 6 showing as it's proportions should be the same as the 9 and 3. I wonder if they had done a heavier hour marker, but stopped just short of the edge of the sector (but thicker and longer than the minute markers) whether that would have helped with the look of the watch, otherwise a beautiful watch, but still a poor man's Jaeger Master Control Sector (man those skeletonized syringe hands!!!)

I can't say I really agree that the speedmaster, which has a 40mm diameter of across the dial incl. bezel (and is 42mm in case size due to the crown guards) wears much larger than the Seamaster 300m. Especially considering that the Speedmaster is around 47mm lug to lug while the Seamaster 300m is somewhere around 50mm lug to lug.

that's why its called "wears larger". meaning the specs could be same but wears different.
Agreed, the Seamaster wears like a chunky watch, particularly with the bracelet. The Speedy wears a lot smaller, lighter and thinner.
You also have to consider the true lug to lug. Because the Speedmaster bracelet has protruding endlinks, the real lug to lug is closer to 53mm. They also might be comparing to how the Seamaster wears on a rubber strap as opposed to on bracelet. But yeah, specs on paper don’t tell the whole story.

Christian I have to tell you that seamaster looked great on wrist . The sector dial is so crisp and simple but i have to keep looking at it . May have to get that one .
That Longines is great and was on my radar but the Hodinkee version with cosc movement and bracelet was that bit better for me.
The seamaster is interesting as I hated the skeleton hands, silly helium valve and scalloped bezel but i now accept it as part of the dna of that watch and I’m coming round to it. If they provided the rubber strap in with the bracelet it could be a real game changer as they’re both great straps.
Much too short an episode because it was so delightful.
If you will Christian, please have Anthony back and discuss the new Longines Spirit collection and for those who like dress watches, the Master collection including the chronograph and moon phase models. I like the black dial models personally. They’re very overlooked and I think that there will be a shift towards dressier watches once people start coming out of their houses.

Here is my perspective on both watches. I like both. I have tried on both at an AD. Preference is the Omega Seamaster 300M with the white dial.
And there is a but. But, I would much prefer to save funds to get the new Jaeger le-Coultre Master Control Chronograph Calendar, Reference 4138420.

Say what?! The new Seamaster is a monster size-wise compared to my old sword hand ref. 2254.50.00. It is a def. no from me. What a bad trend to inflate watch case sizes. The submariner is so elegant in comparison, much thinner. If it is because of the thick co-axial movement then please go back to the ETA movements ;-P

Love that seamaster 300m! I have it in black on the steel bracelet but got the rubber strap as well and switch between them quite often. However this is starting to cause lots of little scratches inside/around the lugs, oh well. Yolo right?

The Omega is great all round but the Longines while at first glance looks attractive and classy once I saw the 12mm vertical depth of the case it lost any of the early charm it had on me....
It has a slim midcase and wears thin. Lots of the height is a sapphire. Disappears on the wrist.

I like the 90s Seamster better and the original Planet Ocean even better (which I have). I have tried on that Longines... It's stunning.
That patina' submariner dial looks amazing.
The Longines looks great, but 30m WR is just not enough. Why not 100M minimum, and a screw down crown?

The 42mm Speedmaster does not wear larger than this Seamaster. While the Seamaster is certainly wearable due to shorter lugs, the Speedy is the smallest 42mm on the planet, wearing more like a 39/40mm due to its 39.7mm bezel and the 42mm measure including the crown guards.

@@romanopeterj you can't go wrong with one! I was a little hesitant with my purchase! Glad I bit the bullet. I personally think there's a spot for a Cartier in everyone's collection, regardless of direction!
I own the 42no omega on strap, but since my wrist is bigger then average, the strap doesn't fit me well. So I use natos and aftermarket rubber straps. But I feel I'm missing out on an omega experience with their strap.
Are you sure you got large rubber strap, because there are two sizes S and L? What your wrist size is?

I disagree with you. Longines is a famous old brand. I have some gorgeous vintage watches from exploring the poles in the end of the fourteens ww2. I'm a big fan of luxury brands like PP, Breguet, AP and Rolex. But the only watches I always wear in the lower price range are my different Longines. They are much cheaper but find their place on the wrist.
There is a Lamborghini selling at a used car lot that does not usually sell exotics, but occasionally do when they get them.
So by this measure, does this mean the Lamborghini is no longer a supercar?
