Thanks for this fascinating analysis of the aesthetics of a watch dial, particularly your tryptich of three alternative treatments of the placing of the seconds. The element of playfulness, of trompe-l'oeil, in apparently placing one element 'on top of' or overlapping another (in this case the seconds on top of the 6 numeral) is what creates a sense of depth and gives interest to what would otherwise be a very two dimensional dial. Great stuff!

Literally within the past week Longines for me went from a "meh" brand, I'd never ever buy to a brand who produces several pieces that are in my top 10 list of my next piece. I call this the "Nomos effect".

I am so satisfied with mine. I am as happy as with any of my big brand watches. What is really amazing is the movement, in wearing it for five days, it’s not even off by a second a day .... It had all my wrist time since december when i got it. only the strap sucks, changed mine for a nomos black horween one. awsome combo. keeper for ever.

  • @skzion2

I finally pulled the trigger on this (the price had gone up, but the one I got had the old price), at about $1750 w/o tax after discount. I got the black leather strap with the blue jean NATO as the alternative strap.
OMG, especially with the black leather, which stays in the background more and makes the dial more "severe," this thing is a killer. In addition to the overall design, there are pleasing details like the shine on the metal washer (or whatever it is) holding the hands in place. The shine echoes that of the blued hands. The printed numbers also have a shine from some angles. What's more, the dial seems almost frozen in time if you look at it quickly, which is a fascinating effect. But then there's that wonderful small seconds with the texture of a Japanese rock garden.
As I said, it's killer, surpassing the original model.

Dang. That validated my recent order for this watch. I appreciate the considered examination of the complexities of this watch and the renders. Thanks too for including a photo of the watch on an aftermarket bracelet. Strap vs bracelet is an interesting design choice itself. Those lugs seem to pair more naturally to a strap. Bracelets are preferred by myself on account of the hot Texas climate where I live but I've been acquiring more watches on strap. The causal straps offered on this watch are curious. The blue suede is jaunty whereas the black tips its hand towards a purpose instrument perhaps even a military watch. Might try mine on a black or dark blue alligator strap to dress it up some. JLC used blue gator.

bravo, great review. result: i am going to buy this watch. very interesting analysis of the interaction between the seconds dial and the "6". prior to seeing your alternate renditions, i would have said the balance and symmetry is perfect. that is, i didn't question the partial coverage of the 6 with the seconds dial. after looking at your alternate renditions, i see that ultimately the current incarnation is a compromise. the right compromise, but still a compromise. if jlc or pp employed this design, i would have paid much much more. it is refreshing that the right design is much much less. what a win.

I do look forward to your video on the Bigeye and perhaps I will make a decision once I have seen both!

I like this watch a lot. I've always been a fan of sector dials.
If it were 42mm with 20mm lug spacing it would work better for me. The larger size would allow the sub second dial to stay out of the minute track and not be too small. Replacing the arabics with thicker lines (a doubled line at 12) would be cool too.
It wouldn't be hard to make this 100 meters water resistant, that would make it a great all around watch

I purchased this watch based on the strong praise from IDGuy. I agree that the overall design is creative and highly attractive. In my opinion, it is a copy of the JLC, but the 39mm is too small and the suede blue strap of 19mm with pin buckle (instead of deployant)is totally inapropiate for a dress watch, should one want to change it, would be difficult to find that size.

Seems to be only head-on stills, avoiding a view, I suspect, of a rather
'biscuit-tin' profile, which mars the 1945 model.
No mention of the caliber, and we all know why.
It's not a review, it's a sales-pitch; a regrettable feature which seems to be on the rise these days.

I just think they should have cut out the '6' completely, like on the older ones. I don't understand modern day reissues by brands today. Look at Seiko, they are completely messing up their 60th anniversary ones as well.
