Every ranged unit have a melee attack in AOE3, including settlers. AOE3 is actually pretty interesting because for some units like Skirmishers, being forced to melee (because enemy melee units are attacking you) is a strict penalty. But for Muskets, you sometimes prefer to attack in melee because you do more damage vs cavalry that way.

As primarily an AoE3 player, I can see they have inspired themselves heavily on that game in the creation of these two civs. Things like the spahis, the great bombards, stealth units, and economies centered around cows are all features already existing in that game. This whole promo and expansion looks like a brilliant effort to breath new life into that game.

While this's from a different game developer, an RTS from 2001 Battle Realms did implemented the auto switch between melee and ranged attack before AoE III.
IIRC, the AI in Battle Realms is quite simple; Melee unit with ranged attack like Samurai (Which AoE 2 originally intended to be able to switch between melee and ranged like this, ironically.) will default to melee, and switch to ranged attack when pathfinding AI cannot find a way to attack the target it selected in melee, which includes when putting them on the Tower, obviously.

Taking advantage of the free "trial". Seems nice. I don't like the UI though but I guess over time I'll get used to it. SOTL talked in some video about switching between "classic" and the new UI, was that about AoE III? I haven't played yet. I didn't find such an option in IV.
I like that units can be in multiple groups, something I've wished many times I had in AoE II. A group of villagers seem to kill one sheep at a time, unlike in AoE II, where they pick closest and waste food. That's nice. And the change I like the most, units can freely move through a group whereas before a group of units was essentially a wall. I haven't made it to the third age yet, so I don't know what else is new and useful.
Rams being able to board 16 units without any upgrades is INSANE!
Edit: Looks like MS did the right move by lowering the price and allowing people to try it out. Just bought the game.

Its a good game, with good gameplay and story. The videos explaining what is happening before each level starts really help to bring the game to life, and the educational videos such as the making of a castle, or maille armor really add depth to the history. I knew that castles took a long time to make, and that maille was a laborious process, but watching those videos for instance, really made it like, dang, they built all those castles and outfitted tens of thousands of soldiers with armor that they had to make one strand of metal at a time. I really wish that they had included the East Roman Empire in AE4, since they had their nemesis (Blobbasids) and now their arch-enemy the Blobbomans As well they've included other medieval great powers, why only include HRE when ERE was there for all of it?

So, with all the civs, they seem to try snatching as much an audience as possible by people associating . English for US and Commonwealth, HRE for Germans and, perhaps, Eastern Europe, France for, you know, French, Chinese for, who'd guess, China, Abbassids for the Islamic Countries, Rus for the Eastern Europe (which didn't turn out too well as Russia and Ukraine were mixed), and Dehli for India. Those are the richest/largest markets. Mongols stand outside - but they are needed for historical context and campaign, as they come into clash with China, Arabs and Rus.
Now, Africa/people of African Origin get Mali, and Ottomans will appeal not only to the Turkey, but also Turkic speaking countries, like Azerbaijan , Kazakhstan. Notice, though, that they didn't choose Persia and Norse, which, from the perspective of the place those civs occupy in the history of Medieval period, may have been a more logical - but, as of now, less profitable - choice.

I don't know what it is that keeps me from playing AoE4. AoE3 is actually my favorite game of the franchise because I played that game the most and it's what introduced me to online multiplayer games.
It improves what I dislike the most about AoE2 which is unit animations, especially in combat and more importantly variety in between civs. Each civ has its own more historically accurate (for the most part) sets of units for specific roles which means I wouldn't have to use Europeean Pikemen with the English lions on the chest or crossbowmen for the american civs for example.
I do still love AoE2 very much though because I played that game with my dad a lot when I was a kid and I prefer the game's balance for eco and military more than in AoE3. Also, AoE3's community can be super elitist at times, to the point where people refuse to play with you if they see even one "off-meta" card in your home city's deck.
AoE4 seems to be a mix of the two so I *should've* fallen in love with it at first sight but I somehow didn't.

In my imagination i designed Turks to start as nomadic civilization which at the end of feudal age you get to chose between 2 buildings Khan's Hall and Sultan's Mosque. The first lets you remain as mobile cavalry civ with religion Tengrisim and the other converts you to economy and gunpowder civ with religion Islam.
Overall chosing your civ's future is a unique mechanic which can be really powerful depending your matchup but it captures the essence of the civilization. Turks had various Khanates and settled Sultanates existed at the same point of the history.

Having civs change dynamics could create an interesting interplay, where you can give enticing bonuses to how you play and choose. Encourage people to move during a nomadic phase.
It's such an interesting mechanic in general. I hope they do something with Viking civilizations, as they changed the course of the history of many Kingdoms. A conversion choice could exist, boosting trade, cavalry, and tech, but removing raiding and bonuses from settling close to other civs. They became the Normans and ruled Eastern European empires not to mention Scandinavia of course.

They are both games based on Medieval history. There is always going to be massive overlap even with many aspects of AoE2 on release focussing on the early middle ages and AoE4 focussing later.
As it is, although many of the names are different, the HRE is the only civ arguably not covered in AoE2. English/Britons, French/Frank's, Chinese/Chinese, Delhi/Indians (Hindustanis), Mongols/Mongols, Rus/Slavs, Abbasid/Saracens, Malians/Malians, Ottomans/Turks. The HRE could be tied somewhat to the Frank's (but they are really Easy Francia, not West Francia) or Tuetons (as a German civ) and Bohemia was part of the HRE as was Burgundy for quite some time, but I would say that the big gap in Europe in AoE2 is the Kingdom of Germany (such as the Bavarians or Saxons).
The Eastern Roman Empire was a major player throughout Europe and the Middle East during that period. There is no way it isn't on the shortlist to be added to AoE4.

Decided to give this a go since free week and honestly I'm pleasantly surprised with it. It feels really familiar but there's enough new stuff going on that it feels fresh. I don't think it would entirely pull me away from AoE II but it's been enjoyable thus far.

The game balance is objectively better in aoe4, especially that infantry can now actually compete with archers and cavalry at every stage of the game. The big, big problem is that it is so easy to get a lead that snowballing out of control is a massive issue.

@@satyakisil9711 Happy to hear that infantry is viable. It was always stupid to me that IRL infantry was probably the most numerous battlefield unit, but in AoE2 they just kind of sucked. Alright, you and sniperjelly have convinced me to give this a shot.
What makes snowballing in AoE4 worse than in AoE2?

I don't even have a proper system to run this masterpiece 😅😫

@@lightworker2956 In AoE2 you can dodge arrows and stuff, that lets you beat huge armies with small armies if the other player doesn't micro, and since microing gets harder the more units you have it becomes a comeback mechanic of sorts. Most people probably prefers not having to micro so much though.
Other part is that you get rams in age 2, so you can quickly batter down defenses if the enemy isn't ready even in the early game.

I'm not a huge aoe fan, im super casual with them but for me aoe4 was dull as there was nothing to do but pvp. Campaigns were okay and fairly simple and short, and that's, really all there was to do in it. For me, without a lot of custom game support and more things to do, aoe4 isn't going to be a hook, no matter how many civs they add.

to be honest, its the 2nd most popular aoe game after aoe2 de. average aoe2 de may have 20k players over weekends, while aoe4 has around 15k. Still not bad, think defo as time goes on and more popular civs are added, we'll defo see these numbers evening out.

I wish this game would have more actions for military units, such as patrol, protect and, especially, that stance where units don't attack even when enemies are within range.

4:08 Well many people forget that Aoe Online existed or that AoE III is a thing
In AoE Online there was the Inmortal, from the Persian Civilization, that had the ability to switch from Ranged to Melee depending in how close the enemy was to them. Unfortunaly this was only automatic.
In AoE III ALMOST all the Ranged units can switch from Ranged to Melee by the same condition, but if you enable the advance formations in the options menu, you can change the stance of your troops. In that game the units gain different stats and advantages depending on the stance chosed by the player. (Like Muskeeter was able to inflict more damage to Cav with the Melee stance)
Finally i don't remember well but also in Mythology some ranged units also changed from ranged to melee when a melee unit was on them,
