Building a Stone and Wood Bridge Bench

  • For this build, I combined several elements from different areas of life into one cohesive design. A bench with an organic stone as one leg elegantly transitions to a refined joinery and bent lamination emulating a bridge.
The stone is a granite boulder. The top and leg are African Mahogany, and the Arch, cross braces, and wedges are walnuts. The whole thing is finished with a satin wipe-on poly.
    Inspiration came from:

Thanks! Funny you should mention it....I've had this idea to make a white concrete iceberg extending through a table, but had never sorted out how to create the organically shaped opening.... so I was taking notes while watching this! :)

@@modustrial Oddly enough while I was watching this video I was thinking you could really change the sandstone rock for some GFRC. The end product definitely looks amazing - I thought it had a Japanese feel to it. I have lift similar sized sandstone sculptures and they were back breakers.

When I saw the thumbnail, I thought: There's no way you can even move that thing! It must weigh a ton! Then you hollowed out the boulder like a maniac. Genius!

I love this piece! Has a simple look to it, despite the complexity of making it. Just beautiful.
Might be cheating, but if I ever attempt anything like this, I think I'll cut the top of the stone off, then trace the top stone on the top of the table, the bottom stone onto the bottom of the table, and router out just a little of each area, couple millimeters maybe, so that the rock appears to be going through the whole piece when in fact it does not. The table just sits firm on the bottom rock then, making it pretty stable without other brackets. As you can see, I'm really inspired and my brain is running with it. 😃👍
Oh, and doing it this way, the top piece of stone could be hollowed out for a secret compartment!
    Thanks for sharing!
