This is so true. I didn't even know she had kids and I've watch many of her videos 😁 It's refreshing to see a normal human being on the internet treat loved ones with respect... oof.
I noticed several people asking about the difference between these and the regular metallic "glitter" set from them. These pigments are not bound to the mica, so they work just like normal watercolors with a tiny bit of ultra-fine silver glitter residue left over as you paint. It's much more separate than the color coated mica of the normal sets which make everything a homogeneous mixture. This set is mostly regular watercolor, with just a touch of finely ground silver glitter residue in each color. The glitter effect does not dominate, because it is not bound to the color the same way as their usual mica glitter/pearlescent/metallics. Think of their usual metallics like silver plating on jewelry, they coat the shiny mica with a pigment color. In their other set the pearlescent mica metallic effect is thoroughly mixed. The pearlescent effect does not separate back into clearly defined color AND sparkle, but rather just gives an all around pearlescent effect to each color. In contrast, this new phosphorescent/hint of glitter is not bound to each other, so it separates into just tiny pools of glitter with clearly defined separate color. Hope that helps :)
I purchased this mainly for the tin. But I was pleasantly surprised with the paints. I painted a small winter scene with them and it was a lovely effect. I got them on sale at $37 and the case, if purchased alone, was more than that. I moved my nicer paints to the Rubens tin. This did require some sticky tac as my winsor newton professional pans were a tiny bit smaller. I prepped the mixing areas and once I did the beading went away. Overall I am very pleased especially since I caught it on sale.
Phosphorescent means that they glow under a blacklight, like a psychedelic poster. Luminescent is when the paint emits light in the dark, like a wristwatch face. Most paints called 'Opus' or 'Hot pink'' or 'Opera' or 'Opera rose' are phosphorescent. Daniel Smith's 'Iridescent blue silver' is somewhat phosphorescent. That's about all I've found that are phosphorous. The colors are rather fugitive also.

I really really wanted this set but with their blue tin just because how Gorgeous the tin is, I didn't realize that the paint is sparkly until I read more about it and watched your review 😭 I have plenty of glittery and sparkly paint and I can't juatify buying this pricy set for the tin alone and not enjoying the paint itself 😩😩😩😩
I was just finishing up Dr.Oto Kano's new watercolor swatch video on the blues and greens of Roman Szmals watercolors. What a treat to jump strait over here! Thank you for the wonderful video and I can't wait to watch all the way through.
The beginning part of the video involving your daughter is just adorable. My daughter gave me the other Paul Ruben's glitter set as a thank you gift a few months ago. She runs her own very successful indie nail polish business and loves to use the glitters and micas in her polish so the glitter set really spoke to her. I haven't used them yet since I don't really know how or what I would use them for. I do paint greeting cards for my family for birthdays and Christmas so that's probably what they will get used for. They are very glittery. Thanks for sharing this review with us. I always enjoy watching. You have such a calming and soothing voice and way about you that it's almost therapeutic.
As a swatch addict, I think this is quality swatching action. Plus, I have the amusing mental image of you in a dark closet mumbling 'Glow, already'. Hehe.
They're actually really beautiful, nice and subtle and I'd definitely consider them for certain pieces. Thanks for the review and another superb painting x
You videos are always very calm and relaxing... It helps during these times... Specially me because exposed... So thank you. They help taking one's mind off things...
I think that they meant it has light reflecting properties because of the fine silver glitter effect, a bit like a shiny mirror. It's a translation issue, as Paul Rubens often uses odd words when they translate things from Chinese to English. I do not believe these glow or react to black light.
I was about to comment how the name is misleading as phosphorescent emits light on it's own and is what is used in all "glow in the dark" [not to be confused with dayglo] items that allow them to glow after being exposed to light.

Thank you for this video! I'm always fascinated to watch you draw and it calmed me down during this kind of stressful time. It was also because of you, I started watercolors this year, and you definetly inspired me to try portraits which I only drew with pencil or acryl before. So, again, thank you. Stay happy and healthy!
Actual phosphorescent and florescent watercolours are a big goal for me. I love working in glow and neon and would adore transferring that to watercolor.
Have you thought about trying to make one of your own paints with something like mica flakes added? Or with an actual phosphorescent component? That would be really interesting!
I just got the metallic set of 12. No layering with those. They mix well, but when trying to layer, the earlier color is removed. The amount of mica in your water when rinsing is huge, so separate your water glasses to avoid contamination with regular paints. Definitely more for small amounts of highlighting. Had I known, I probably would have purchased a set of 12 of the set you are reviewing on this video. Thank you for all you do here. 😎
Hello Arleebean you can also use glue stick in your palettes, to prevent beading, staining and abrasives. Use for metal or plastic. Apply, then wipe with a few damp/wet tissues...so there is no sticky feeling and no lint.
i just purchased the traditional 48 pan Paul Reuben and i like that there is another 24 pan option that isn't metallic or traditional. it has some difference in effect, and the packaging alone is to die for. i was torn when buying the 48 over the 24 original pan bc i wanted all the colors but also liked the smaller case. this set is perfect in that way. different enough and not too big to add to my collection
something i notice having these paints are that the more glittery your water gets the more glittery your art is and you see the glitter much more when the painting is dry
I think that they meant it has light reflecting properties because of the fine silver glitter effect, a bit like a shiny mirror. It's a translation issue, as Paul Rubens often uses odd words when they translate things from Chinese to English. I do not believe these glow or react to black light.
It’s so refreshing seeing you upload. as an amateur artist that didn’t have much experience, your videos inspired me, so much that when i had the chance i got the himi gouache set under your influence! sending positive vibes your way
These remind me of the gemstone paints from Daniel Smith so I usually emulate that by mixing a michaels brand shimmer white into my normal paints as well as the Daniel Smith primatek
this is such an interesting set! between the palette shape/design, and the actual paints itself, I'm very glad you did this review. I absolutely love how your piece turned out, as well! I think the subtle glitter is such a gorgeous touch!
These watercolors are pretty neat! I love the hues included in the set, but also the shimmery effect. I'm a person that (involuntarily) ends up with saturated paintings because I build too much. But they would give a nice touch to my paintings!!!! If I'll be able to afford them in the future I will definitely buy them! (I'm currently using winsor and newton watercolors, both the cotman and the professional versions. I made myself a palette mixing the various colors they offer)
I finally received my blue set from Amazon today after Kimberly and your videos since I was still not clear on the difference between this set and Paul Ruben's metallic set which I also have. After the swatching, I realized what both you meant. I agree the paints are more like normal watercolor set with just tiny sparkling particles. They are still transparent and the sparkles are subtle - I actually like its unique effect. I suppose one can always mix normal paint with some mica but it is nice to have the paint already-made :)

Very good review information, but what really was nice is the beautiful work you did on this portrait. You've been a good watercolor artist for some time, but this one was exceptional in my opinion. Personally, I've been having difficulty with painting eyelashes so it was greatly helpful to see your technique here. And even more than usual your color choices are incredible.
I love your work. Just blown away every time I see you paint another piece! Just started painting because of the 'Rona, but it turns out I love it, and I ordered the regular Paul Rubens palette and the metallic because I'm a 41-year-old child who can't get enough glitter. Heh... I think we might actually live fairly close to each other, which is kinda cool. I don't usually see too many Pennsylvanians on UA-cam! Hope you are not going too nuts in this mess!
I don't have this set, but I do have the metallics. The glitter/pearlescent sheen on them is not subtle at all! So, if you want a lot of shine, get the metallic set. If you only want a touch of sparkle, get this one.

You can sand the palette with a soft sand paper it works pretty well!!! :) I did it on my plastic palette and it acted just as a ceramic one afterwards 😍
I loved this video! I'm in Mechanicsburg/Cumberland County, and I have an autoimmune disorder. I'm pretty nervous because the county count is going up, and I am extra susceptible to all pathogens because of the meds I use. Videos like yours have helped me stay focused and calm, which I really appreciate. Thank you, and stay safe!
I thought I may want to buy these paints as well and they were on my “wish list”, but I recently discovered Winsor & Newton Iridescent medium. You can make your paint as glittery as you want. I love it! It is inexpensive too-only $5.50 US at Blick.
I would buy them, the subtle glitter effect would work really well with the type of illustrations I want to make (fantasy/children's book type) I don't use metallic paints but I do like them sometimes. I feel like they should be reserved for accents and small texture patches, though. I once tried using a metallic gold and silver combo it to make an entire background and it didn't turn out so well oof
I know this is from a year ago but ..same. I can't seem to find the "right way" to incorporate metallic watercolors even though I really really want to lol. And that's why I'm curious about these.
@@kathyhackney7950 yeah, it's a lot of trial an error. I've actually changed my opinion on this in a span of a year lol, I think it depends largely on the style of the work. I feel like the attempt of an all metallic background/using the paints for a larger shape would have worked if it was more graphic. I hope you find a way that works for you!
I may be wrong but that palette/tin design is called a "bijou box" (bijou means jewel in French). I saw them used by Winsor & Newton and Blockx. The paints look very interesting and unique. I don't need them buuut.... 😅 Also your daughter is adorable!
Thank you so much for this! Outstanding youtube, visually, auditorially, and content-wise. You did a perfect job potting down the music, which is such an unusual skill. As an aside, the idea of apologizing for dry skin just makes me so sad. My recommendation is to erase that comment. You are as perfect as you need to be.
I've heard about Paul Rubens before but I wasn't too sure about investing in one. I really enjoyed the review about this set and especially loved the recommendations that you gave with regards to the ideal usage of this set I.e galaxy paintings, etc. Getting art supplies is a challenge for me geographically especially the ones which are used by artists and for my next haul, I'm going to put this set for consideration alongside with a Sennelier set that I've been saving up to get. Stay safe too Arleesha 😊
Try them with a black light instead, that they glow on their own is not always the case, but they may react to black light ? As far as I know that’s what the neons are for as well.
Thanks for your review. I use PR paints myself over my high-end paints for the purpose of economy. I have to dab away and rinse off too much pigment with my techniques to use DS and Sennelier alone. I am in my 3rd year of art, and I don't want my supplies to ever feel "wasted." I bought the 2 box tube sets for myself for xmas, and I poured 2 palettes, 36 and 24 and am very pleased with the way they handle. I also purchased Arteza 60 Mica set, so I never need to buy any art or cosmetic supply only because it shimmers. I have made the most freeing of choices, in the end. I do not yet sell my work, so the paints are almost overkilling in quality for sketchbooks and practices even. I LOVE Lightwish Pretty Excellent brand for sketching and travel. I mean I like them a LOT. I highly recommend PR paints
Amazing watching you paint , so talented! Thanks for the review, I don't think I would make this particular purchase. Like you said not enough difference. 🎨🖌️🖼️
I’m not interested in this set but ive got a lot of sets as it is. It doesn’t offer enough to make me want it. I do love your portrait though. Stay safe and healthy!
The more I look at it the more the corally shade you got and used toward the end ( around 14:50-15:00) is really beautiful. Overall the pinkish reddish shades are also looking better here than in the regular set that I possess and it has beautiful colorful and rich reds, shades of reds that I like but here it's different, more soft, more peach, mauve, coral more luminous. Even the blues and the greens, more rich here I think for the blues, have that softer, luminous look to them compared to the regular set. Sad that's it's more expensive. But the tube set you presented once is more interesting to me. However that blue pallet... Hum... It's pretty. Very pretty.
Cool! Personally i have a habit of making all my pieces at least kinda glittery so I definitely enjoyed this Review even though I don't think it's something I'll ever buy because I already figured out how to make things glittery
I have the glitter ones ,those are pretty, and even with a lighter wash it’s still there, but how often I will use them in a whole painting I am unsure..For small sections perhaps ..I do have a set of their normal ones too and I love those ,but I honestly don’t think I would splash out the extra for these..By the way.. I love what you did with them and yes you can see the difference in the eyes where you have layered ,as his eyes are his focal point and the slight shimmer ads to this too 😀
I live in high desert of far west Texas so always looking for paints with a bit of something to add the bit of our light difference at this altitude plus colors facilitating desert colors & help with night sky. How would you rate this set? Most paints with some sparkle are way too much sparkle! Thanks!
Oh yay, I've been waiting for more reviews on this!! I've only seen one so far. I'm kind of in love with the tin.... I really don't like the inner tray design, but I kind of adore the exterior... Though I don't like that the flipy outy bit doesn't have side edges either tbh... Basically I just REALLY love the lid ok it is *very* pretty 🥺
Very, very nice face! I wouldn't have any use for glittery WC, but I do own the small set of P Rubens metallics, as I think they are lovely. However, I don't use them, so far. Just want them, & wish I had ordered the larger (24) pan set instead.
I wonder if they would look good on black paper? Some other phosphorescent paints show well on darker paper?? These look really pretty and interesting swatched! Beautiful work as always!
It is quite a classic palette design and a Chinese copy of the hand made heavyweight tins made in Europe. The small boxes in which some Schminke sets come work on the same principle. I think these paints are for people making original art to sell, though if you don't mind losing the mica effect then I suppose they will print up well enough. I think maybe the names have been put through a digital translator rather than checked with a fluent English speaker. The texture on the box looks interesting. I have european and chinese boxes like this the latter are slightly lighter weight and not enamelled so thickly, but are a great deal less expensive to buy. You painting is lovely and the colours look nice, but on the whole I find the box more interesting than the paint and your work more interesting than both!
this palette style is the whiskey painter metal box style or the bijou style. it's a rare metal watercolor box style.. currently only whisky painter and holbein have this palette style at an very expensive price..
I'm pretty annoyed by this deceitful "phosphorescent" word here. Glittery and phosphorescent are not synonyms. Do these colors shine in the dark? If not, they are not phosphorescent.
Maybe a mistake in translation. Saw another video about these, perhaps they didn’t mean phosphorescent but meant to refer to the interference colors in the set
SINCE LONG AGO THERE ARE ALREADY SCHMINKE PALLETS WITH THAT DESIGN!! THEYR MORE LIKE DESIGNER OR HIGHER PRICE PALLETS... AND SOME OF THEM HAVE AS MIX AREA A PORCELAN PLATE ON THE OTHER SIDE IN IT WHAT YOU ALSO CAN TAKE😁
love how you include your children without exposing or exploiting them like many youtubers do. You seem like a wonderful mother

The metallic effect is thoroughly mixed (stuck to eachother). Their usual metallics do not separate back into clearly defined color AND sparkle, but rather just gives an all around pearlescent effect to each color. This new phosphorescent/hint of glitter is not bound to each other, so it separates into just tiny pools of glitter with clearly defined separate color. Hope that helps :)
To me the difference bid when you use metallic paint there is a lot of reflection where as ones like this it's more of a "sparkle"
what a gorgeous peice😊 really appreciate the honest review
Gnome Sane - Not sure. I pretty much just use it for cards now. It is more “glittery” than say pearlescent, but makes watercolor cards fun!
made me happy cry for a second. so adorable.
I would buy them, the subtle glitter effect would work really well with the type of illustrations I want to make (fantasy/children's book type)
I don't use metallic paints but I do like them sometimes.
Also your daughter is adorable!
I find it so interesting that you paint directly over you pencil- my colors always turn out muddy when I do that
Maybe you could try a harder pencil?a HB would do, they wont smudge like softer pencils do
I’m not interested in this set but ive got a lot of sets as it is. It doesn’t offer enough to make me want it. I do love your portrait though. Stay safe and healthy!
I couldn't find these online anywhere. Are they not available yet? Great review
I wonder if you can add silver or gold mica to any tube paint? That would be amazing if you could
This is so beautiful! 😍😍
The colors of the glitter set are really pretty, apart from the glitter situation. I like the blues and greens of that set.
The dino part was the best!
The case and packaging is beautiful
Thanks!
Is your shop still closed? I would really like to order a print of some of your work! Also your art is amazing and your daughter is adorable
Your watercolor is beautiful
Oh yay, I've been waiting for more reviews on this!! I've only seen one so far. I'm kind of in love with the tin....
I really don't like the inner tray design, but I kind of adore the exterior... Though I don't like that the flipy outy bit doesn't have side edges either tbh... Basically I just REALLY love the lid ok it is *very* pretty 🥺
you're so talented
Very, very nice face! I wouldn't have any use for glittery WC, but I do own the small set of P Rubens metallics, as I think they are lovely. However, I don't use them, so far. Just want them, & wish I had ordered the larger (24) pan set instead.
I wonder if they would look good on black paper? Some other phosphorescent paints show well on darker paper?? These look really pretty and interesting swatched! Beautiful work as always!
I really want to get this but also is the glitter more apparent in person then on video?
와 그림이 쉽게 느껴질 만큼
쉽고 멋지게 그리시네요~
항상 즐겁게 감상합니다~^^
That's why kids are so precious!!!
Paul's Palette is so Cool. Wow. I'd buy watercolour palettes over makeup palettes anytime. Peace love friendship from England UK.
this palette style is the whiskey painter metal box style or the bijou style. it's a rare metal watercolor box style.. currently only whisky painter and holbein have this palette style at an very expensive price..
This is inspiring me so much to paint right now but its 9am and I haven't gone to bed yet--
Such relaxing content. Thank you.
So beautiful 😍
AND SOME OF THEM HAVE AS MIX AREA A PORCELAN PLATE ON THE OTHER SIDE IN IT WHAT YOU ALSO CAN TAKE😁
Ahh I always love ur videos, watching you paint is so relaxing :D
