Thank you also for your beautiful commentary. How many singers can have that said about them? Not many, sadly. Bill Withers, Gordon Lightfoot, Lisa Gerrard, Tiny Tim.

I was born in Chicago but in very good circumsatnces and was fortunate, but I saw those in the ghetto there who were trapped by poverty and lack of good schools and it was violent. I am glad that you were able to escape the ghetto. Thanks to God for that!

"Elvis Presley - In the ghetto! For me one of Elvis greatest songs from the 60´s
Suggestion: "Dolly Parton - In the ghetto" One of the best cover versions!
Thanks Sarah! For a great Elvis Presley reaction video. 🙂

He was a once in a generation talent and I was just a little kid when he passed away. However, his music was played a lot around the house growing up which is probably why I love his music. My favorite songs by Elvis are Don’t; One Night (With You); Love Me; You Don’t Know Me; Such a Night; Young and Beautiful; Don’t Leave Me Now; and I Want You, I Need You, I love You.

I can’t remember who said this, but I recently heard a quote “if a child doesn’t have a father in the home, they’ll find one in the streets”. And I think in the context they meant, they really were directly addressing homes with no fathers, fathers that literally abandon them. But I think it still can relate to any low income situation. Even if their parent(s) are around, there may be other things going on. They may have to work multiple jobs to keep their home and food on the table, so they just aren’t around enough to physically care for their children. They may be dealing with an illness or an addiction and therefore can’t care for their child properly. Whatever the reason, if a child can’t find the support they need at home, they will look for it somewhere else. And that’s how a lot of gangs sway kids into joining them. They provide a sense of family and belonging that the child is desperate for. It’s so sad because they deserve so much more, but the world can be cruel.
I can’t think of many artists that would use their platform like this. It’s one thing to make a statement during a performance or interview, etc. Which very few artists will even do that. But he actually made it into a song. And I feel like it’s even more impactful that way. It’s more likely to reach more ears and music tends to hit you differently than just hearing works spoken or seeing them written. To do this, and do it during the social climate of that time, is pretty amazing.

It is from several studies that have found in the US that 90% of all inmates in prisons come from single mother homes. If there is no father to teach a man how to be a man, the boy will find someone who will, it normally is not one who cares and only wants to use the child for their own desires, either dragging them into violent crimes or worse.

No one would record this Mac Davis song as it was too raw, especially during the race riots in the 1960s. A top RCA executive said we can't release it. Elvis heard it and said, "That's my next single, son" and walked away. The great Sammy Davis Jr famously turned it down.
Only Elvis was willing to risk his career to get that record on the air-waves. Only Elvis could have performed it and gotten the radio play when it came out in the late 1960's, during the Civil Rights Movement.
He made it his platform. One of his major public statements on the issues of racism and poverty. Without uttering a single press release or public statement. Not a single political word or comment. Amazing power of song by a very brave and loving human being.

one thing that i don't think gets nearly enough attention is his charitable nature. He would regularly give away cars, cash, and many other things (in some ways he was the Mr. beast of his time). he also routinely hired minority workers and even created the Elvis Presley Charitable Foundation. a portion of the funds received by the EPCF each year goes to an Elvis Presley scholarship that i can't remember the exact name of at the moment, while other portions go to helping other charities including one that provides counseling and other services to abused children.

"In The Ghetto" was a big hit for Elvis in 1969. It was written by the late great Mac Davis. It deals with the poverty & sadness of life growing up in the ghetto.
