Hey Tidus, not sure if u know this, there is also an animation cancel for your first rapid shot. For example at 4:45, if u do the inputs ZR > ZL > release ZR, u can cancel the entire arrow drawing animation which is very significant IMO. Great work and very informative, all the best.
I am aware of it, but I decided not to include it, after frame counting and testing on the field, the gain was just a few frames and pretty niche. I was gonna include it at first but the video was already pretty full. I’ll pin your comm so people interested can see it. Thanks!
i was thinking the same thing, with good timing the rapid shot is staight up level2 witch i think can be important. But with good position i would just do rapids, while with close range coating for first rapid cause level1 damage is kinda miserable
For information, here is one of the frame counting uploaded : streamable.com/epfwqg Difference is very minimal with this tech, only 6 milliseconds on this video (it depends on timing so it can vary). You also are vulnerable during the draw animation that last half a sec at the beginnning of the combo with this tech. All in all, i'm not a huge fan, which is why I didn't want to include it. But once again thank you for sharing
Damn dude your editing style is so nice and feels like I'm watching a presentation, like someone who's never played bow or heard of any of the bow terminology can easily just watch the vid and find out about it without prior knowledge
A compact and thorough breakdown that's easy to digest. I know most of this but I think I'll just point to this video if anybody else needs a basic combo guide on playing Bow. Thanks for sharing!
I don't know if you've mentioned it in another video since, but for anyone reading this now, 3:32 you don't have to dash anymore, they added another option: swapping scrolls lets you keep your charge and your stamina recovers a lot during the animation. Combine it with the Shifter Dango for healing in the middle of your charges to keep Peak Performance topped off without stopping to heal.

I think animation cancel is easier to do in sidestep compared to dodgebolt - becuase it is to do with when you release the rapid shot. It has to be at the lowest crouch of your slide and then the power shot can come out immediately because your hunter has to be in a low crouch to release the power shot. I think sidestep has a lower crouch period and therefore a bit of a larger window to animation cancel compared to dodgebolt. I think the animation cancel was intentional from capcom - much like how CB has various GPs depending on where the shield is during sword combos.
I haven't tried Bow yet so this is all pretty confusing, but like others said the editing and layouts are clean! And I don't know if you're from France but the music at 4:39 was giving me some Saint Seiya vibes. I think all French people know Saint Seiya lol.
I’ve gotten so comfortable with dodgebolt, it is very intuitive. Which is kinda fucking me up when I go back to charge step for the more ranged fights. But goss, rajang and tigrex are just too much fun now. I really love the direction they have taken this weapon and how smooth it was transitioning from over 1200 hrs of dual blades in iceborne/world.
@@O1OO1O1 you need to use it in the monsters face. You will get a ton of parry’s even by accident but regardless you get a riposte which is anywhere from 40 to 90 damage every time you dodge. It adds up really fast and when it works, it is to say the least, damned satisfying. If you are fighting a target in the air a lot, it loses its charm pretty quick though. As also stated, you need evade extender to make it work and luckily I got a really good charm roll with level 2 evade ext. plus a couple level 2 slots, but just one level of evade extender works great.
@@AxxmorbidfloristxxC I don't see the use. When is it ever wise to be in a monster's face as a bow user? Whether you're using pierce or rapid (the only decent builds at the moment), why would you ever want to be that close? Prove me wrong, but it sounds like a bad skill. I want it to be good and not suck, but... well, it is what it is.
@@O1OO1O1 I don’t literally mean be under the monster so it’s body is clipping into you, I mean close enough so it’s attacks connect with you and you can get the counter off. It helps you learn monsters, it makes you not afraid of monsters, and a dodge is a necessary part (the end of/ the beg. Of second) of your combo, so getting into a rhythm where the dodge in your combo counters the monster and gives you an extra damage boost is awesome. You don’t need spread, You aren’t going to lose the orange reticle being close enough to use dodgebolt. But that’s about it, if you don’t like, don’t use it, seems to me if you want to get better at monster hunter in general, countering is probably a good way to do that. Edit : it’s also a good way to use your sidestep as a dodge now that the frames of charging sidestep have been nerfed, as the counter will let you continue through the laser beam, swipe or whatever.
Another thing to mention about "not spamming A" is that due to the nature of the animation cancel it's real easy to queue up that second Power Shot by accident, which will frequently result in getting hit due to the long recovery time you mentioned. There's actually have quite a bit of time after the first power shot to decide whether or not to do the second one. So it's important to get used to not only doing the cancel, but specifically get used to the D-R-P combo without queuing the second Power Shot. That's what's really going to save hunters when the monster is coming at them with combo attacks like at 6:17 when you were demonstrating Dodgebolt against Goss.
This video is so extremely underrated. Tidus is insanely good at his explanation and video planning and deserves more viewership. To all of us, whether you are a bow user or not, please share his videos so that more people can be exposed to his content!
Hi Tidus, All of your videos are very informatives and really pleasant to watch. Keep up the good work, man. And also, as a French myself I think it is really cool from you to create videos in English. I've learned a lot from your videos, thanks.
your video is the best i found on youtube, this is the best explanation someone could get, i am already pretty good at SNS to the point of i can play solo against any monster and easily deal with it, now i just started trying bow, and i'm loving it, but i was pretty lost about how to combo, do you have a video or could you make one explaining the bow types and "coating" like how it works ? i tried the spread bow and i hate it, i like the rapid bow
I was just thinking about the possibility to have a video like this and here we are. I'm still struggling with the animation cancelling, too much commitment for now 😅
Bow is such a cool weapon, but I've never really been able to grasp how it works and how to do damage - the few times I've tried, I felt reliant on manually charging to the highest charge levels before I could start dancing, which by that point had already 1: wasted a lot of time, and 2: spent a significant portion of my stamina bar doing nothing. After watching this, I'm thinking maybe I'll give it another go the next time I play. Took a fairly long break due to exams and personal life, but I recently finished my exams, AND helped my girlfriend work out the gamebreaking bug that crashed the game for her every time she tried to launch it, so I am more motivated to get properly into it! If Sunbreak wasn't about to launch, I would be trying to boost her to HR 100 so we could farm Valstrax (only recently got there myself) - but as it is, it feels kinda wasteful to invest too much time into specific builds, when they'll become obsolete in a couple of weeks. Remains to see what will stay relevant when we get into Master Rank, so I've decided to just... take it easy so I don't risk getting burnt out.
Thanx a bunch! I playeda thousand hours plus of MHW but waited really long for a sale of rise+ sunbreak It was so long that now that I want to return to using bow I was like"how do I bow again? "
Hey Tidus, new to your channel (and also to Bow). I reckon you should add "Bow" to the title of your video for those of us who don't know that your channel is primarily about bow. This vid was more or less the intro I wanted to Bow but it would've been easier to find if you had the weapon name in the title.
just want to say, your bow play inspired me to try out the weapon. Fast forward to 100 hunts in MHR, im absolutely in love with the weapon and I know I still have a lot more to learn about it :)
This is so much clearer than other bow guides I've been browsing. Thank you! I've been motivated to try bow after failing the event allmother quest many times with lbg. Do you have any recommendations on which set of combos to use for that and what build to use?
Great job. I've picked up a switch for rise but so far i'm not getting on with bow or lbg, something about the reticle movement is feeling really off compared to IB.
Ngl the name "animation cancel" made me think it was something much more complex, like something you'd hear in a fighting game with tight af frame execution.
Thanks for this quick combo video. I do like how it's been simplified in Rise compared to world and it feels like Bow is an absolute power-house weapon. I just really badly need to work on my evasion/dodgebolt timing to get through roars and aggressive types that want to touch me. Any tips on getting used to the i-frame timing?
i know you have mentioned your gyro and camera controls, but maybe a video explaining how you aim using it might be useful. some times i can either not do horizontal movements while aiming using gyro, and other times its just overly sensitive.
This is awesome, thanks! I'm plannign to pick up the Bow but I'm struggling with aiming controls when I try it with the dummy. What kind of settings do you use? Do you use a pro controller or joycons?
pressing ZR, before first charge press B to dodge bolt to cancel, release ZR with B together follow by A, this can shot a charge 2 rapid and charge 3 power
I made plenty of frame counting and comparaison on this tech. At best you gain 6-8 milliseconds, and you’re vulnerable for 30 frames at the start during the draw animation. I don’t think this tech is good outside of extremely niche situation. It’s not being used in any runs using dodgebolt, I don’t think I can recommend it in a general combo video
I hope they don't "fix" the animation cancel. It's fun to get good at it and I think it looks cool. Same with the Insect Glaive's recall animation cancel. Having advanced stuff like this in the game only adds to the fun in my opinion. If the weapons need to be balanced, I would definitely prefer the damage numbers being adjusted over removing cool tech like this. Let me feel like Legolas dammit!
I agree with this, especially since it’s been a while now and we got used to it. If they wanted to remove, it should have been immediately. Id rather have damage nerf than gameplay nerf
hi Tidus, for dodgebolt, you can charge when dodging. someone suggested the opening should be ZR(hold) > D > ZR (release) .. at this point you are already having charge level 2
Bro wtf, I started using your combos and trying to incorporate the animation cancel everytime (I rarely nail it perfectly but still cut a lot of the animation time) and I feel like I'm speedrunning now with how fast I'm killing some monster compared to before. Much appreciated!
Thank you for your videos!! Best bow tutorials! QQs: 1) If I am learning a monster+bow, would you recommend more to dash and not firing but maintaining the charge and moving around, or just dash and not maintain? I feel sometimes in your background clips you do just walk and wait an opening but I never really know if you just hold the charge or not or if it is worth it. I'm just trying to learn if I need to practice this for efficiency or if it is really niche. 2) How do you like dodgebolt in the end? At first you mentioned that it was not really top for speedruns, but what about casual/fun runs? Do you personally enjoy it?
I really do enjoy dodgebolt on some figjt, I use it quite often. I think for most monsters sidestep is better speedrun wise but in casual it doesn’t really matter. Dodgebolt has matchups where it’s really strong too, even in runs. As far as your first question goes, it really is a case by case thing. When you know the opening and the monster, you’ll know where to positon yourself and if you need to walk, or dash
@@LyonOlivier69 Awesome thank you! I am just casual cycling through weapons, but always looking for commentary hunts. One tip I start to learn, is it can be hard to position myself, so I tend to move the camera in order to use simple up/down/left/right dodges, instead of diagonals. It requires lots of knowledge of monsters. Teostra is so aggressive, but such an interesting monster right now. Kushala and Chameleos feel...very slow in comparison!
Hi I just wanna ask, how does your arm glow blue? I've been using bow for a while and for some reason it triggers on my character but I don't know what it does are what triggers it.
when i first learnt how to play bow, someone told me always use D+R+P or D+R+P+P for side step because R+R has too much animation delay... it seems it was wrong.
It’s not bad, i did it at first too. But in the end, after doing a lot of frame counting and discussing with or watching other runners, it’s clear now opening with drrrpp is more efficient in almost every czse
Hello Tidus. I actually started my playtrough with the Bow and now saw the animation cancel on the Power Shot combo. By any chance, did they fix this "mechanic" by now ? I've been trying for the past 1 hour and im doing exactly what told but my character only does the usual rapid into power normally, no cancel. Thanks in advance !
Question! Why dash dance and do R > P > P > D... instead of just R > P > D...? Wouldn't R > P > D be much faster without Power Volley and end up dishing out more DPS? Love your videos, by the way and it's great that you keep it easy to understand with the help of the visuals!
I had the same question before, the answer I figured out for myself is that in terms of stamina consumption, DRPP is 4 motions for 3 damage (75% stamina goes to damage, assuming stamina consumption of all motions to be quite similar), but DRP is 3 motions for 2 damage (66% stamina goes to damage), where the former seems to just be more efficient with stamina and prolongs the dash dancing. Correct me if my logic is incorrect
I see... DRPP would probably be better then, I suppose, because we also gain stamina back while winding up for Power Volley, right? I think that'd make DRPP a little more stamina efficient if both combos output the same amount of damage
@@mystixisme987 yes, also gotta consider that on most openings, you have maybe time to do a power volley but not necessarily time to do whole other dash rapid power, so that’s something else
if you have any advice on the two(?) obligatory(?) arena fights to unlock the mighty bow feather, I am all ears. I can get Barioth sometimes but I am especially struggling with Rajang as I can’t equip the bow there...
Oh... Answering myself: I was trying so hard to learn the lance and had not realized it’s pretty easy to cheese Rajang with the Heavy Bowgun if you are used to the bow and gyro. Just play it safe and easy. It’s the narga set so great evade. You can stay on the High Potion as the locked set has free meal. Honestly from the second attempt, Rajang probably won’t even touch you once as long as you don’t care about ranking. Other useful info for fellow HBG illiterate hunters: *No need to load the ammo just select it *Exhaust ammo is useless (obviously) and so is demon ammo (I think it’s a support buff) *Each ammo has a different range but also different ammo magazine (number of shots before reload) * X to reload proactively.
Why not incorporate Dragon Piercer into your combos, while it does have a long charge up the damage is around 3x stronger and it deals slashing damage with almost always has higher weakness advantages than ammo damage. Maybe Charge Dask -> Charge shot -> Charge shot -> PowerShot cancel to second power shot to Dragon Piercer
This is awesome! I just started playing bow, so this comes at the perfect time. Thank you ! -what bows would you recommend to get me through low/high rank ? I subbed and activated the bell as well.
@@LyonOlivier69 LOL i never expected you to reply this quickly ! Thank you 😊 what do you think about the magma bow ? And yeah...this weapon is way more fun than ls (I played it since gen ultimate)
@@DarthNov lol I’m on my phone right now before going to bed. Magna is really strong in village quest because low blast tolerance. It loses a lot of power in high rank, where blast doesn’t proc nearly as much. It’s still fine for rampage, to complete the status sub quest

It helped a lot thank you!! btw how did it went with you try bow on bazel? i cant seem to find sweet spot on him. tried elemental and raw build and its kinda hard dealin damage
The training room showcase the charge animation as an input « charge ». If you look after the dash you will see shoot, charged shot, charged shot, those are the 3 rapids I mention. The « charge » in between us just when I hold the trigger between shots
I've been using DRPP or DDRPP a lot to position myself from farther away and get into dash dancing, which feels powerful because you can use an opening that just presented itself and it conserves some Power Coatings. What are your thoughts about that and Power Coating Efficiency? To me it feels best to adapt my playstyle and charge up more via dodges while I still have them so they don't get wasted on the smaller charge levels.
I will have a video on power coating management, with quickload 2 there are a lot of ways to not only conserve and maximize power coatings, but also other coatings
Thanks. Trying to get into Bow after gotten to MR 60-70 3 times, Yea i like to start over and learn the weapons from start, Yep i am mad !!! My fist Monster game, and got +1100 hours to now, Super fun.. Kindly.
How often are you finding yourself running Dodgebolt? I would assume it's dependant on the matchup. Do you bother with Evade Extender when using it? I haven't felt the need to get much practice with it, but I can definitely imagine where it could be good.
Yea it’s matchup dépendant, or when I feel like it. Ee1 is nice but usually if I use it on a dodgebolt matchup it means the monster stays close or comes to me, so I don’t usually « need » it, so I tend to not use it

Been waiting for someone to properly explain the animation cancel
It’s mostly that if you spam A, there is a good chance you will press it before the rapid animation starts, which will simply skip it entirely

Thank you for this!
Me as an IG main: Hmm very interesting, I’ll make sure to remember this.
This videos are very informative, thank you!!
I really needed this video... You got a new sub sir
Thanx a bunch! I playeda thousand hours plus of MHW but waited really long for a sale of rise+ sunbreak
It was so long that now that I want to return to using bow I was like"how do I bow again? "
Amazing guide. Short and easy too understand. Hope you also make a vid for sunbreak.
Quelle qualité dans ces vidéos
Gonna have to fight the urge to quick shot before dashing like I did in world haha
Especially with dodgebolt, feels so weird to start by shooting lol
Hey Tidus, new to your channel (and also to Bow). I reckon you should add "Bow" to the title of your video for those of us who don't know that your channel is primarily about bow. This vid was more or less the intro I wanted to Bow but it would've been easier to find if you had the weapon name in the title.
Best video on youtube regarding the combos, but how do your stamina recover so fast?
Stamina surge 3
just want to say, your bow play inspired me to try out the weapon.
No it’s really simple ahah
Nice guide, thanks!
Hey Tidus! Can you do a tutorial on your aiming.
Camera/sensitivity or settings?
Thank you!
That would be awesome. Only play shooters with MnK, no clue how to aim on the sticks.
@@AstonMartinStig sticks for large movements, gyro for precise aiming within a field just under 180 degrees.
Not really no, just practice :)
i know you have mentioned your gyro and camera controls, but maybe a video explaining how you aim using it might be useful. some times i can either not do horizontal movements while aiming using gyro, and other times its just overly sensitive.
This is awesome, thanks! I'm plannign to pick up the Bow but I'm struggling with aiming controls when I try it with the dummy. What kind of settings do you use? Do you use a pro controller or joycons?
Pro controller, highly suggest it!
pressing ZR, before first charge press B to dodge bolt to cancel, release ZR with B together follow by A, this can shot a charge 2 rapid and charge 3 power

Id rather have damage nerf than gameplay nerf
thanks mate
hi Tidus, for dodgebolt, you can charge when dodging. someone suggested the opening should be ZR(hold) > D > ZR (release) .. at this point you are already having charge level 2
streamable.com/epfwqg
I am aware, I did frame count for this tech, you basically gain nothing while being vulnerable at the start during the draw animation… so not worth.
thanks man!
Bro wtf, I started using your combos and trying to incorporate the animation cancel everytime (I rarely nail it perfectly but still cut a lot of the animation time) and I feel like I'm speedrunning now with how fast I'm killing some monster compared to before. Much appreciated!
Hell yea man, glad to hear it! Have fun!
Great video ! bravo =)
Thank you for your videos!! Best bow tutorials! QQs:
1) If I am learning a monster+bow, would you recommend more to dash and not firing but maintaining the charge and moving around, or just dash and not maintain?
Having a bit of trouble with the cancel, I'm getting arc shot a lot of the time even though I'm not holding down Zr?
Also after frame counting over 30 seconds, the damage between drp and drpp loop is the exact same over time, give or take a few frames
Oh... Answering myself:
I was trying so hard to learn the lance and had not realized it’s pretty easy to cheese Rajang with the Heavy Bowgun if you are used to the bow and gyro. Just play it safe and easy. It’s the narga set so great evade. You can stay on the High Potion as the locked set has free meal. Honestly from the second attempt, Rajang probably won’t even touch you once as long as you don’t care about ranking.
Other useful info for fellow HBG illiterate hunters:
*No need to load the ammo just select it
*Exhaust ammo is useless (obviously) and so is demon ammo (I think it’s a support buff)
*Each ammo has a different range but also different ammo magazine (number of shots before reload)
* X to reload proactively.
Takes way too long and too long recovery. Not worth at all
we need a stamina management tutorial
It's on the list :)
As a new Bow player I have a bad habit of mashing A as I buffer my combo's a lot of the time 😄
Are there any changes to the camera controls when using bow to make this work? Thanks
thank tou
This is awesome! I just started playing bow, so this comes at the perfect time. Thank you ! -what bows would you recommend to get me through low/high rank ? I subbed and activated the bell as well.
Tobi is a really strong bow as soon as you can make and upgrade it. as well as Anjanath! Thank you!
@@LyonOlivier69 alright. I will do those 3 then 😇
@@LyonOlivier69 then rest well ! And if you are awake again I was hoping about some early Armor recommendations :) cause I got the late game ones in your vids and the website you linked 😇
It helped a lot thank you!! btw how did it went with you try bow on bazel? i cant seem to find sweet spot on him. tried elemental and raw build and its kinda hard dealin damage
Pierce thunder seems to be best
I'm looking at the sidestep combos 2:36 and noticed he pressed Zr more than 3 times. Does the dogde+ shot not include the 3 rapids that should follow?
@@LyonOlivier69 Oh, great, thank you for the well presented quality content, looking forward to that!
Thanks.
Trying to get into Bow after gotten to MR 60-70 3 times, Yea i like to start over and learn the weapons from start, Yep i am mad !!!
I am at HR 6 right now and needed to go to youtube to look for help.
Find the bow pretty slow at this point, But can see i did not do my combo like this, Give it a try later today again..
Ee1 is nice but usually if I use it on a dodgebolt matchup it means the monster stays close or comes to me, so I don’t usually « need » it, so I tend to not use it
Also, do you immediately Zr after sidestep?
This is how i do it
After sidestep immediately ZR, when animation starts A power shot
It doesn’t really matter when you press ZR, you just wanna make sure you let it go at the right time. Then input A early
