- Is the Dewalt Flexvolt Mitersaw any good or is it just a typical middle of the road saw that will get the job done until you need more precision of high end tools like Festool?

Thanks for the review! I had hoped you would not forget to revisit this purchase and comment on your experience. I have the corded version purchased around 10 years ago and have been very happy with it as an all-around saw for everything since I have not had the luxury/opportunity to have multiple miter saws. This cordless version is a purchase I am contemplating but it will likely become my finishing saw (assumption being that it will be very easy to confirm or adjust the new saw to peak calibration with alignment of blade, table, fence, and measurement plates). Sadly, the Kpex is beyond my means for the foreseeable future. Again, thanks Ron!
One difference between the saws is that the DeWalt has a horizontal handle- much more ergonomic than the vertical Kapex handle.
Great review Ron! I bought the Dewalt a little over a year ago because it was the best bang for my buck and I'm very happy with it. Yes, there is a 9 lb. difference in weight (the Festool KAPEX is 47 lbs. vs. the 56 lbs. of the Dewalt DHS790), and the dust collection isn't very good as you pointed out, but I'm a DIYer working out of a small two-car garage and this saw is perfect for the money. If I was to stage the saw on a dedicated miter station against a wall, it's deep footprint would be a dealbreaker, but the Paulk Smart Station solves that problem, and the saw only cost me $650 new. I was already on the DeWalt platform, so I had 9 and 6 AH batteries from my angle grinder and circular saw respectively and the saw also comes with a power cord. Now compare that $650 with the flagship miter saw offerings from Festool ($1,600) or Makita ($1,300). If I bought the saw today with the batteries, it would set me back about $850 and would still be a great deal in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, if I was mobile and/or NEEDED a smaller footprint, I'd rather the KAPEX or even the Makita, but I'm not (especially being on the DeWalt battery platform).

Also... Triggering the blade isn't necessary to turn on the blade alignment 'shadow'. Use your index finger on that little button on top, above the trigger. Great review. Thanks, Ron!
Stick a piece of clear laminate across the rear scale. it'll make it easier to clean and makes sure the markings last longer.
I bought the saw when they first came out. I already use the DeWalt platform so it's an easy investment. It's expensive for a saw but the risk has more than paid for itself. I build decks in people's backyards and cut treated lumber all day, so it's not babied at all.
I actually cut all my 2x12 stair stringers with this saw as I can cut up to 60° on the right side.
The only downside is that the saw comes with two 6ah batteries and it works much longer with 2 - 9ah instead. A dull blade will lower your run time significantly, obvious for any battery saw.

I’ve been using this saw since it came a few years back. It is very accurate after a little fine tuning. I have a corded model that is about 20 yrs old as well.
I'm just starting out and already bought into the Dewalt 60v platform, so all I had to do was drop $650 for a new Dewalt DHS790AB; so for me, it was the best buy for my money. I'm just renovating my home, so it's not going anywhere so I can deal with the weight and bulk. I'd have to pay a lot more than that for a Festool or even a Makita (though one day I would love to own either one). Great job with the review and keep them coming. I enjoy all your videos and now have your plans for the PSB that I can't wait to build.
I have an older Dewalt (not sliding) that cuts everything anyone needs for framing. For anything outside it’s cut range a cordless circular saw works fine. I agree with Ron about the Festool for finish work. I think that Dewalt saw is just overkill and too big and heavy to lug around and set up and take down everyday. I think the 40 volt Makita is a better choice.
I like mine I also have the 110vand the 240v adaptors it makes it more versatile
I have a second hand 24v Bosch GKG 10”. I converted it to use 2x18v makita batteries and put a nice CMT fine kerf blade on it. On a light weight stand I fold the legs up and carry the whole thing around site for trim. It is lighter and more convenient than anything on the market currently.
My kapex remains on the big stand with the extractor and the main work area.
The Bosch GKG cost £60 on eBay. 👍

What I do like about the flexvolt is that you can buy a cord adapter that plugs into the battery slot. It's nice because if your saw will be stuck in the shop for long periods of time you can plug it in and not have to worry about batteries. Which in my opinion adds to the versatility of the saw
The ac adapter actually is included with the saw so no extra cost. I forgot to mention it as I have not used it yet. 😎🤙

For those complaining about the weight, the bare tool weight for the KAPEX is 50.93 lbs (no batteries to deal with). The new cordless 40V Makita is 69.1 lbs. The Dewalt DHS790 in this video (which I own) is 57.69 lbs. using the AC power cord and 62.62 lbs. using two 9Ah batteries. If you're lugging it around all the time that might make a significant difference, but for many if not most of us it does not. There will be plenty of people lugging around that 69.1 lb. Makita, that's for sure and it is considerably heavier than the Dewalt. I would have bought a Makita but I'd also have to pay twice as much. The Dewalt is a better deal for the money for many of us, but it really depends on your personal needs/tolerances.
For me it isn't the weight, it is the physical size and the rails extending behind the saw requiring more space. I like it, but it isn't a Kapex, then again you can buy two Dewalts for the price of one Kapex and the Kapex isn't cordless.
I have a 10” metabo 36v miter saw that is my primary saw for my garage and it has rails in the front similar to makita and festool. I find it to be exceptional accurate for a $400 saw and I can do about 100-150 cuts per battery charge.

The Dewalt is bulky - but they do stand up for framing and can be treated a bit rough - I however am looking at the Makita for its compactness even though I have the 9 amp flexvolt batteries. There is no issue with Dewalt’s accuracy. My old corded Dewalt has served me well.

I have avoided "sliding" miter saws after a buddy told me about alignment issues. Of course, that was over 25 years ago. What can you say about the accuracy of "sliding" miter saws vs. "non-sliding"?
Very interesting and informative video. Thanks for sharing. I would've liked to hear more about the weight of the DeWalt and what it is like to lug it around.
It's extremely heavy. My boss has one, i started complaining about how ridiculously big and unwieldy it was, then he got the rolling stand for it, which made the problem worse really, then he got the little 7 1/4" slider, and we don't ever use that big jalopy any more. I definitely would not recommend that saw if you need portability.
Good review overall. I am surprised you didn't mention the lack fine tuning ability for the tilting of the Dewalt compared to our beloved Kapex. You are right, though, in that for kicking around outside doing framing, the Dewalt is more than acceptable.

I have two. Used for installing cabinets. Replaced the motor twice They have quietly discontinued these because of this. Few places still have them. Homedepo don't have them on their website anymore. I have this model and the DHS716AB. Replace the motor on the DHS716AB twice. Come on Dewalt.

Cost of saw and batteries plus charger versus k pea. Don’t know if I am sold on all battery powered saws. How many cuts canu get in a set of batteries? Would it be good for high production work?

Yeah, I am really surprised there aren't more companies that offer dual power.
Milwaukee has it on a bunch of their lights, and metabo has it on their 36 volt platform (which includes their miter saw, but not, sadly, their 6 inch sander).
Pretty important feature, I would say. Using your batteries all day every day wears em out fast, even if performance isn't an issue.
I've only depleted my batteries once doing trim all day. It was no big deal, just throw in the AC adapter and keep cutting. The cost of the batteries is an issue, but I just try to buy tools that come with them.
Does anyone know where to find this saw currently? It seems to be out of stock at all the local Home Depot’s. Even the online retailers that I’ve checked are out of stock.

Yeah as I just found out.... I've used mine a total of 10 times, blew it out after every use... Treated it like gold because the damn thing is $2500 AUD and today I decided to use it with the power supply for once and bang out came the smoke... Oh and the best part is that it's less than a month out of warranty of course.

I haven't been to a framing site without a miter saw... Usually used to cut trimmers so they are all the exact same length

Sorry Michael, I have built 200+ custom homes including multimillion dollar estate projects. I have framed many myself and hired framing crews for many as well. I have always used a miter saw and EVERY production framing crew I have ever worked with, used one or more miter saws. It is used to cut window/door packs, trimmers, and much more. The speed and accuracy of a miter saw far out produces a worm drive. That being said, I use at least 3 skill saws when framing: 8 ¼" worm, 10" big foot, and 16" beam saw. You should know what your are talking about before making a comment like "no one uses a chops for framing," 😎
@@TheSmartWoodshop u know dam ell what I'm talking about ron..I have framed for 28 years ron ..but u use a chop saw 3 per on a frame and u know it ...its all the skillsaws do the work...I know u can use a chopsaw ion a frame for small little shit like facia ..soffit..rake..but the way u tried to make it out that u framed the whole house with it ...u could use any cheep shit saw for framing.....ill take my skill saw u take your chop and we will c who gets a house done first...I would cut 3 houses to you 1 ...and u know I'm right ?...u don't need a chopsaw to frame a house ever...
