  • Dry Ice Blasting in the car detailing world has exploded over the past few weeks. The irony is that this type of cleaning has been available for many years as a non-destructive method for safely cleaning surfaces in the industrial and commercial markets. Cleaning and detailing disaster cars and engines has been done before, but never with so much social media presence. I'm using a Cold Jet machine with a 375cfm compressor that was rented from Red-D-Arc tool rental in NJ.. This set-up is a bit more "industrial" and less precise due to its industrial design. In other words, my ignorance picked the wrong machine for this type of precise work, but it was super educational to go through the "growing pains" of my education. Nonetheless, the ice balster did a great job. The operator (me) needs more practice and most likely a smaller nozzle to get into all the nooks and crevices. What I have learned is that Dry Ice Detailing is "part" of the many services our industry can provide. It's an add-on similar to clear bra (PPF), window tinting, paintless dent removal (PDR), and coating applications. Next week we have an expert coming to the AMMO NYC Studio to teach me (us) everything we need to know about dry ice blasting vehicles and how to do it safely. Hope everyone enjoys! -Larry

Use a sort of tent to cover the whole car before the dry ice application and please do not swipe the dirt out by brush or compressed air. Use a vacuum cleaner or collect them from wet floor then into a specific container. Thnx for the great content.

I didn't even know ice blasting was a thing until now, it looks real cool. As far as the soot getting everywhere, two things:
    1. You now have a reason to do a "Detailing My Shop" video, if desired.
    2. Other people say drop down walls/curtains, but since the design of the studio might make that difficult, an easier solution could be using those plastic covers (like you used on the green Porsche to protect it from that one concept Baja) to form a tarp over the lifted car. Then you could tape the end facing the open garage door to an industrial fan to suck soot outside to make cleanup easier.

I worked at a car parts manufacturer years ago, and they would contract out to have their machinery cleaned with dry ice. Loud as hell, but works.
That said, there is a reason why any type of particle blasting is done in a cabinet, outside, or contained some how. With dry ice at least you don't have to worry about also cleaning up the particle's, as it simply evaporates. If you are going to pursue this, I highly recommend some sort of cordoned off area to contain the blowoff.

I was thinking about that ever since he opened this shop. I find it crazy that he allows all the water mist, dirt, dust, go everywhere in the shop covering everything, including other cars in there, kitchen, tables, like wtf.

Wooooo with your review, I was looking for a review like this… I am researching about detailing cars and equipments, and this machine it’s getting a lot of attention. There is a lot of talking about the pros on using this machine but most don’t talk about the cons and what it takes to run this machine…

Saw a car restoration channel using the ice blaster to restore a supra iirc, really interesting to see more detailers get into it. Love learning about it. With all that dirt that gets around esp in your shop with multiple vehicles, i feel like you'd need a booth for it

Hey Larry, great video! Wondering if you'd consider making an episode about pressure washers themselves at some point? Looking to get an upgrade from my basic hardware store model and am having trouble finding decent information out there. Some details about attachments, wands, etc. would be very helpful too. Hopefully this could help some other as well!
