If one can ignore the weird ectoplasms floating in the background, the rest is perfection. Perfect German, since she began her career singing in German opera houses. Marvelous in all respects.
Yes, she is the best here on youtube period. Perfect pronunciation, her timeless voice full of colors, and most importantly a deep understanding of the text because she has actually lived a life. The pianist to match her is Jorge Bolet in Liszt's piano-only version also here on youtube.
I completely agree with you. Schumann wrote the song in 1840 - the year in which at last he and Clara were married. The lyrics are an immense declaration of love. This is a superb performance by Jessye Norman - a marvellous fusion of passion and joy; urgency, confidence and triumph. It surely captures the essence of Schumann’s own emotion.
I never cease to be amazed by some people's negative comments. For goodness sake, Jessye Norman nailed it. If you hadn't been watching, would you have noticed what you describe as neck tension? It was superb. Jessye Norman is superb.
Du meine Seele, du mein Herz, Du meine Wonn’, o du mein Schmerz, Du meine Welt, in der ich lebe, Mein Himmel du, darein ich schwebe, O du mein Grab, in das hinab Ich ewig meinen Kummer gab! Du bist die Ruh, du bist der Frieden, Du bist vom Himmel mir beschieden. Dass du mich liebst, macht mich mir wert, Dein Blick hat mich vor mir verklärt, Du hebst mich liebend über mich, Mein guter Geist, mein bess’res Ich!
I really adore Jessey Norman - she has a very, very fine spirit and is one of the great vocal artists of our time; every time I listen to her my heart starts to glow and is filled by the warmth of her voice and personality. Thank you Jessey , LOVE YOU VERY MUCH
thank you texmex0303 for this recording... i am suppose to be doing this song for a recital... this has to be the most perfect recording i have ever heard... Jessye Norman is the best!!
You my soul, you my heart, you my bliss, O you my pain, you my world in which I live, my heaven you, to which I float, Oh you my grave, into which, my grief forever I've consigned. You are repose, you are peace, you are bestowed on me from Heaven. Your love for me gives me my worth, your eyes transfigure me in mine, lovingly you rise me above my self, my good spirit, my better self. ...to my beloved pate.
I'm wondering about this whole lip-syncing music-video thing she's doing -- it's like she's dancing to her old records. I guess she's still so psyched that she is so much thinner than she was when she recorded them... this wig does look like she's channeling "famous black singers in history" and she just got to 1969.
Du meine Seele, du mein Herz, Du meine Wonn', o du mein Schmerz, Du meine Welt, in der ich lebe, Mein Himmel du, darein ich schwebe, O du mein Grab, in das hinab Ich ewig meinen Kummer gab. Du bist die Ruh, du bist der Frieden, Du bist vom Himmel mir beschieden. Daß du mich liebst, macht mich mir wert, Dein Blick hat mich vor mir verklärt, Du hebst mich liebend über mich, Mein guter Geist, mein beßres Ich!
For those who have inquired about the jelly fish, it could be there because something's fishy. This is a lip-synch! A pretty good lip-synch but a lip-synch nonetheless. Jesse still shines like the brilliant star she is in spite of it. She is positively heroic in this thrilling interpretation of Widmung. While I love this version, I also really like some of the gentler more pensive renditions from singers like Elly Ameling and Hermann Prey.
I agree it is not what we usuall think of as lieder singing and I would not want this in place of Fischer-Dieskau or Ameling BUT IT IS IRRESISTIBLE and she clearly loves every note and every word. What a pity about the distracting visuals in the background.
@lovesGenet You my soul, you my heart, You my bliss, o you my pain, You the world in which I live; You my heaven, in which I float, O you my grave, into which I eternally cast my grief. You are the rest, you are the peace, You are the heaven upon me bestowed. That you love me makes me worthy of you; your gaze transfigures me; you raise me lovingly above myself, my good spirit, my better self from Answers.com
I agree..much as I adore this lady. The song was written as a wedding present for Clara Schumann and should, I think be the gentle 'Dedication' the title means
im trying to do a free translation...don't take the grammar too serious: You my soul, you my heart you my blissfulness, you my pain you my world, that I live in My heaven you, that I float in O you my grave that i took down my everlasting sorrow. You are the silence, you are the peace you are given me from heaven. That you love me, makes me worth myself your glance makes me transfigure myself You lift yourself loving over myself my good spirit, my better me.
OK--Wenn Ich Sie richtig verstehe--Are you saying that Ms. Norman sings this like a tractor, & is showing off her voice inappropriately for a love song? Because if so, I disagree. Yes, it's a different feeling & style, not what I'm accustomed to in this song or other such lieder. But, to me, she's conveying a real rush of excitement at the emotion (beautifully shown also in her movements, face & gestures), in a particular interpretation. Less soft, but valid & exciting.
She looks great by the way!! Has anyone seen any of the recent pics? She is so small now...it does make her look a bit older than her actual age, which is 63
I sang this for a wedding years ago and had to learn German phonetics to do it. But I suspect that unless one is actually German, classical music critics (and wannabes) will not consider it lieder, anyway. So one might as well enjoy oneself while doing it.
@jthameschoir08 Jessye Norman ALWAYS gets the words, no matter what language she is singing, no matter what the music. Her extraordinary diction in French, German, and Italian has no equal.
its a love song, why is she screaming so much in the beginning??? i would never play like this it on the piano. but i think the rest is very nicely sung and well interpreted...
If one can ignore the weird ectoplasms floating in the background, the rest is perfection. Perfect German, since she began her career singing in German opera houses. Marvelous in all respects.
grandios .....
@charnier4 exactly. amazing voice. wrong song in my opinion. this piece is best sung a little bit more softly
i agree ... it happens with a lot of the stuff i have heard sung by her ... for nuance my singer is Schwarzkopf
Why the rush on several places. Loose the sensitivity of the poem.
I think this interpretation sounds like an exciting, passionate exclamation of love, so I think it works.
che meravigliosa passione! chi è quello che dice isterica? non capisce niente!
Rest in peace, Queen!
Love her voice! One of my favorite singers, but please lose the jellyfish. It detracts from the text.
Stunning! The clarity, the tempo, everything. Just absolutely brilliant and heavenly.

the emotion pouring out of this woman is simply gorgeous. and so is her voice.
it's so beautiful, it's almost hard to imagine that such an amazing thing can come out of a person
I never cease to be amazed by some people's negative comments. For goodness sake, Jessye Norman nailed it. If you hadn't been watching, would you have noticed what you describe as neck tension? It was superb. Jessye Norman is superb.
I hear no tension.
A fine actress with the most glorious voice of her generation.
Performance perfection!

this rendition is simply incomparable
The best voice of the 20 th century. Angel that left us too soon.
1:43 wow... just found out about her passing... so sad!
thank you texmex0303 for this recording... i am suppose to be doing this song for a recital... this has to be the most perfect recording i have ever heard... Jessye Norman is the best!!
El gaudi de la música amb la veu mes exquisida...gràcies Jessye...que Déu t’ acompanyi...
You are new to opera, right? I can tell if you don't know about THE GREAT Jessye Norman.
i am listening to this song again n again n again!!! LOL. learning some of her techniques so that i can do better in my vocal exam :)
agreed, but this seem pre-recorded.
She is so perfect. I’ve listened to many singers and listen to her again always amazes me! 💛
The phrases at 0:42 and 1:03 are just magnificent-both the composition and her tasteful execution of them.
Who is the pianist?
James Levine?
You my soul, you my heart,
you my bliss, O you my pain,
you my world in which I live,
my heaven you, to which I float,
Oh you my grave, into which,
my grief forever I've consigned.

I love you with my all.
Toto je sila! Tolko obtimizumov pri speve som este nevidela :)))))
Maravillosa.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤👏👏👏👏
Lieder and the operatic style just don't work. Norman is a wonderful singer, but, IMO, the voice is not well suited for German Lieder.
I was twice at her concert
I adore her!
Wow, she's just incredible! :D
I'd like to meet her someday!
I'm wondering about this whole lip-syncing music-video thing she's doing -- it's like she's dancing to her old records. I guess she's still so psyched that she is so much thinner than she was when she recorded them... this wig does look like she's channeling "famous black singers in history" and she just got to 1969.
For me she's the mistress of colours... Beautifully sang!
Du meine Seele, du mein Herz,
Du meine Wonn', o du mein Schmerz,
Du meine Welt, in der ich lebe,
Mein Himmel du, darein ich schwebe,
O du mein Grab, in das hinab

then make us a video with you doing it better. it is easy to point out what you think is wrong. Grab a piece of cyberspace and show us what you got.
Meraviglia❤
She is absolutely out of this world!

I think this wins the Widmung war on youtube
I agree it is not what we usuall think of as lieder singing and I would not want this in place of Fischer-Dieskau or Ameling BUT IT IS IRRESISTIBLE and she clearly loves every note and every word. What a pity about the distracting visuals in the background.
세계 최고다!
요세 노르만 만큼 잘부르는 성악가가 있을까.감동! 감동!👍👍👍👍
Fantastic voice and expression.
A great singer, a great lady.Rest in peace queen of the opera.
OMG.......you are sooooooo funny, the jelly fish is sooooooooo funny!!!! really....what is the matter with the jelly fish??? OMG i can't stop laughing
its better with my eyes closed

So beautiful. Thank you
@jthameschoir08
It is a lip-synch. Does that matter? Not at all. The woman is magnificent!
Simply magnificent!!!
I'm guessing 7 people can't sing! Or there finger accidently clicked dislike.
realmente me encanta la potencia de su voz!!
sehr emontionell , empatisch ,,echt" Song of love"Danke.
Brava! Amazing!
What a perfect performance of this piece.
wonderful voice
THE BEST. the best voice, the best presence, the best artist. THE BEST ALL. :D I love her.
Just a bit to ....hysterical?...for my taste. Wagner suits her best I guess.
I agree..much as I adore this lady. The song was written as a wedding present for Clara Schumann and should, I think be the gentle 'Dedication' the title means
Uma performance moderna e cheia de calor humano. As
águas vivas ao fundo...
I do love the way she sings this, but it is so un-Lieder-like!
The woman is simply a goddess
Pianist Geoffrey Parsons
Wow she really gets the meaning of the words.
Beautifull , thanks for Soul...
Argh - beautiful performance, but then the video just cuts off the last five measures of the song! Why!?
Maluje dźwiękiem. Wspaniałe. Dziękuję. ❤
Beautiful.
Wounderfull!!!!!!!!
i love it but i prefer it slow
She is following the exact score per Schumann
@geschwitz4 Oh that really did make me LOL! Can't wait for the '70s Diana Ross wig! I adore Jessye!
Beautiful! Beautiful!

Kiva biisi 3.0
Actually I think that is her real hair...I have never known her to wear a wig, except for when she is in costume.
weird ectoplasms, lol :) this whole video "Jessye Norman - A Portrait", each song has weird things going round her in the back round.
Amazing performance. She even got the mimic and gesture game down to a T. Really lovely.
I think Jessye Norman is a dramatic mezzo. she does a good job with soprano rep, but that rich, milky timbre is undeniably mezzo.
She looks great by the way!! Has anyone seen any of the recent pics? She is so small now...it does make her look a bit older than her actual age, which is 63

very emotional, yes!
@jthameschoir08

Wow
I love the facial expressions, she's so into it. The Jellyfish make me thing "what the..?" But it's kinda funny.
I have currently watched this almost a hundred times
Who are you to criticize the GREAT Jessye Norman?? How dare you? oh my God...
its a love song, why is she screaming so much in the beginning??? i would never play like this it on the piano. but i think the rest is very nicely sung and well interpreted...
Fast but very full of music..
Hey under commented person
No funny and laughing this is very serious and lovely piece
The jellyfish symbolize the message of the song. Nothing says I adore you like a bouquet of jellyfish! It's a strong scent and so long-lasting.
fantastic!
THE BEST!!
No comments? wut
perfect
Oh helloooooo video I haven't watched in three years. I'd forgotten all about you and your hilarious depictions of jellyfish set to Widmung. ^_^
@copperleaves ??? what? It looks pretty real to me. And who cares if it isn't?
Fabulous, I wonder what the Jelly fish are for. haha, Opera gets more interesting everyday.
she makes it seem so difficult to sing this piece by overworking everything. either way: beautiful, great german.
lololololol my teacher showed me this and he was trying to imitate her.
She is absolutely wonderful :)
i'd just like to comment on the jellyfish background..
otherwise, jessye norman is beautiful.
The jellyfish 🙈 wreck everything.
