Props to the pianist as well as Jessye for this incredible performance. It brings me to tears with a wistful nostalgia for a memory I never actually had. That takes some talent :)
She was a singer of not only plain technique, but with the notion of the song within the song-the VOICE of the lyrics. She delivered them through those notes. She was the definition of a singer.
The voice of Jessye is unbelievably beautiful, and she is technically perfect. I love her art and I am thankful for her dedication and respect to the classical music!
Finally a singer, who has captured the spirit of this piece. I have heard other classically trained voices sound beautiful when singing this piece, but absent of the emotion and longing in the voice; that this piece requires. The pianist was sensitive, and passionate, and Jessye Norman was divine. BRAVO!!! Brought me to tears.
It helped that she always had extraordinary breath control. Helped to sustain this relatively slow tempo, allowing her the time and musical space to create incredibly expressive subtle nuances.

@@FairyForest87 It used to be the way things were said... People could understood, in a politically correct way... Nowadays, I think we can say that kind of things.
Extraordinary! She is gifted with such a rich, melodious, fluid voice...and the breath-taking ability to both powerfully project and spin the notes in a crystalline pianissimo.
A perfect melding of composer, vocalist and pianist. While no one can ever say that another interpretation will be as good, it will take an extraordinary vocalist and pianist to surpass this.
I wasn't familiar with her until a few months ago, but oh my! She has such a lovely voice. When I close my eyes to hear her sing I'm transporter to a different place.

Hermoso, hermoso, hermoso!!! Bravo !!! Belleza total. Desde hoy soy fan de Jessie Norman.
I don't think there's ever been a singer more in control of their voice. Say what you will about her interpretation, but the colors she's able weave throughout this piece, the dynamic contrast, the consonants, vibrato vs. straight tone, portamenti vs. detached...it's unreal.
Can’t say it any better than the last person who commented! Some sing this song without the perspective that life brings to loving another. Jessye with the most beautiful soul and heart, gives us a beautifully full impression.

Stunning. She's in a class by herself, and there's something about the French language that focuses her voice in a truly exciting way. No wonder the French asked her to sing the 'Marseillaise' for the ceremonies in 1989!

I just worship this recording, and Ms. Norman, in every way. She is truly an actor's singer. And her decision on this slow ass tempo really is just such an exquisite and delicate touch that shows her artistry at its fullest. Of course, her Carmen is amazing -- every role she did was amazing -- but for me this is the pinnacle of her fucking amazing acting.

She really does though. She turned this art song into an Operatic Aria.
Pure art and soul!
This is how the piece is supposed to be sung. Sheer perfection. Every note, every syllable, every emotion is spot-on.
A single gesture of her hand takes this magnificent performance to heavenly realm.
This is a real example of how someone can be the music. This is a real instrument. Our body.
She turns this charming 'waltz song' into epic tragedy - but how wonderfully! Such ravishing tone and colour!
Her style is perfect --her teacher was the composer's lover and create a lot of his songs! ;)
