    In case anyone's wondering what she says at the end of the video, "Ich leb' allein in meinem Himmel, in meinem Lieben, in meinem lied." from Mahler's Rückert-Lieder: Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen. Translated, it means " I live alone in my own heaven, in my love, in my song." She finishes by saying " Schöner gehts nicht", meaning "It could not be more beautiful." Jessye Norman, you could not be more beautiful. Thank you for being an inspiration to so many singers over the years, myself included. Thank you for the beautiful recordings you leave behind. Rest gently, beautiful queen.

    I think this is one of the most heartbreaking and emotionally devastating arias in all of opera. And only an artist of Jessye Norman’s immense talent can capture the full emotional gravity that it expresses. God bless you dear Jessye. 🙏❤️🙏

      This moved me to tears. She possessed the greatest voice that I have ever heard. I heard her sing as Jocasta in Aedipus Rex when I sang with the Philharmonia Chorus. I queued to meet her after the performance. I have never felt such charisma. It was like an audience with a Queen. She was warm and charming during our short conversation. I had met true greatness. I will never forget it. I was very upset that she passed away. She had a nobility about her. There were comments on her blackness when she was singing roles early in her career. Her reply was " I rather like the colour myself". She rose above it all.

      Lori Cameron No way...Hardly!! Not at all. LOL. Singers did not project ego and big voice like this in Purcell's day. And certainly not female sopranos. He would have written it for counter-tenor, a bloke, because he had these in his company.! Check the many historically accurate versions on You-Tube. Janet Baker more like the style.
      But I agree this is spectacular, and Mr Purcell would have been amazed, and would have loved Miss Norman, though. He was quite a lad.

      @rileynavra Рік тому +9

      @@camthesaxman3387 I mean your opinion is valid, but vibrato has a heavy presence in baroque music, however in a much different way than modern interpretation. Typically it is used as ornamentation on long ending notes like the “me” is “remember me” and of course the “ahs” and “fate”. It is a bit excessive in other places, but does not make the English intelligible unless you just have poor hearing.

    I was on stage in Covent Garden once with Ms Norman back in the 80's, with the Kneller Hall Trumpeters performing a fanfare prior to her performance. She was a wonderful singer, and great feminist! Such a powerful voice. Her battle to become an Opera Singer is highly motivational. Rest in Peace Ms Jesse Norman, you have done a great service for women and opera! This aria by Purcell is so beautifully sung, I find it hurts when I hear it. Why certain listeners don't like this rendition is beyond comprehension.

    As a young student in Philadelphia I had the great fortune to hear her live with the orchestra a number of times. It was a sound like I had never heard. Huge and impossibly lush. I had a lesson at the Academy of Music one day before a rehearsal and ran into her in the green room. Almost literally. Haha. She was a stunning presence. Radiant somehow. I am saddened at her passing, but I trust that she had a blessed life. RIP.

    I remember having to practice this song during personal training in college. I watched this video and was like “my director wants me to sing like that?! Yeah how about I make a another sustainable planet 🌎 with unicorns 🦄 and flowing rivers of chocolate 🍫” Tremendous control and emotion and amazing sound. Amazing example of just how far the Lord will use the gift God places in us.

    I discovered opera listening to Jessye Norman. She made me love a musical genre that I was finding difficult to appreciate. May she rest in peace, among those great artists who have shaped my youth and are now gone.
