Her acting. Her singing. Her interpretation of the works of dead men. She brings life to them and into her hearers. I am left speechless wrestling back control. She imprinted the depth of her gifts on us in a way that seems as the impression of the hand of the Divine. I am left shaken and hopeful.
Divine, transcendent...you'd never know how incredibly difficult this aria is technically. Few, if any, sopranos could approach this piece and triumph like this. While we're at it though, let's give another brava for the really fantastic and sensitive conducting of Dame Jane Glover. If you watch the whole concert the rapport between the two of them was truly special. Now off to listen to more Jessye...probably the Four Last Songs. (ps. thanks to all of you keeping this music alive, sharing it and celebrating this truly incomparable artist. I don't have many folks in my life who appreciate opera, this would be lost on them, so it's nice to 'come here' and chat with all of you!)
she was not only a brilliant and genius singer, but she was a great Actor. The way her face shapes to the love, confusion, sorrow and finally ire, is a testament to her talent. Rest in Power, the Great Jessye Norman. Thank u for posting this in HQ 🤍
She was a great ACTRESS, in English. In Italian the word is ATTRICE. In both French and Spanish the word is "ACTRICE. In German the word is SCHAUSPIELERIN. Males, respectively, are ATTORE, ACTEUR AND SCHAUSPIELER. All languages have words DISTINGUISHING this difference in gender. Culture-cancel freaks in the media promote destroying these long held type of DISTINGUISHING differences. Respectfully🙂
She was just a class act. The voice of course was always stunningly beautiful, but her stage presence and the way she held character so long at the end, then broke into acknowledgement of applause was sublime. RIP Jessye. Brava!!!
Usually I don't cry with Opera, but her flawless technique and the expressions on her face and just how she just floats thru the phrases with such conviction. My goodness. I've never seen such a flat tongue in my life! She was such a force. May she rest in peace.
BREATHTAKING ! Jessye handles the melismatic lyrics by her legato delivery, ending stronger than one could suspect. This is immortality. (Thanks to the poster for a better quality video.)
Just love her little smiles she gives during the performance….bravo Jessye. God must be delighted to have you home in his Angelic choir, but our very sad loss. RIP Jessye, we love and miss you still…you were just incredible both as a singer and performer. No one else can touch you , just amazing, bless you 💐🙋♀️💕😘👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I WEEP EVERY TIME I WATCH. Thank God we were allowed to live while she was breathing and gave all that God equipped her to empower the world of arts with.
I love the story she once told about the encouragement she received from her hometown pastor. He told her to pursue a career in opera not only because he knew she could do it but also because he knew she should do it.
I did not know this anecdote/story.there must be so much i still do not know about her. I was Lucky to see/hear her 3 times between 16 and 24 year of age.
I had the privilege of hearing her sing twice in recital; in Houston, and in Chicago. What a gifted woman she was! I was in Augusta three years ago and a little taken aback to learn that her remains are buried in an unmarked grave there.
Absolutley...beautiful! My favorite version, of this aria. I love her, rich voice. O ne of the 'true-greats' among the 'real' Opera-Diva's. Still trying to find this on one of, Jessye Norman's, cd's. One of my very-favorites, among Grand Opera. RIP Jessye Norman, with love. Fr: So. California, USA 2022
I saw her in concert in Paris in the mid 80's... she greated some fans after... at the time she was in the news having a dispute with her record company. I asked her about it, and she gave a big laugh. She was gone way too early. R.I.P.
Durante os minutos em que cantou esta música, Jessye conseguiu ser Dalilah. Me convenceu completamente. During the minutes she sang this song, Jessye managed to be Dalilah. It completely convinced me.
Gosh she was wonderful! I saw her in Die Wälkure and a few other operas over the years. Also at Zellerbach in Berkeley Ca for a memorable concert. She was riveting from the moment she walked on stage. Truly a most wonderful singer, actress, and presence!
It was the hand towards the hip for me 😭 … (or maybe a breath support que to her body) @2:57 on that long azz note that kept moving with such purpose ..to seemingly no end! … like she dug deep and meant that .. 😭 The colours, the audacity and boldness to be this free and paint the song with every brush of her instrument…my gosh Rapturous, Rich , Whelming , Enthralling, Spine Shifting…
She came backstage to La Cage in 85 & a cabbie who worked for the same cab company as my partner came to pick me up. Instead she got it & he said she was polite. She posed for photos with the Cagelles & other cast members. She was real nice.
Su voz, sus facciones, su fuerza y aún así nos brindo una magistral y etérea interpretación que te arrulla y al mismo tiempo tensa todas las fibras de nuestro ser. Eterna Jessye.
French language is undeniable her best choice for singing.Great phrasing and retenutto del discorso mysical is perfect in her attack to this famous aria.Pity her oremature death. We are lacking her divine pressence and artmastering her singing
Maravillosa!! Unica
Prefiero la expresividad de OLGA BORODINA, con JOSÉ CURA. No es la "ÚNICA"... ¡Muy fuerte...!!! NO ES "PERFECTA"...!!! Debería ser más EXPRESIVA!!! NO todo "igual"... con la misma "intensidad...".
This performance alone would qualify her for the hall of the greatest singers ever.
That was not music. That was art.
Music should be art😅😊
French passion is art 😊
The cameraman and producer were in so much awe that they filmed just her face for 5 minutes straight without any cuts.
she’s not just singing. she, along with the conductor and orchestra, have become Expression itself.
Lady Jessie Norman was fluent in many languages .Just wanted to say. This adding to her huge Intelligence makes her more than Just a Diva ❤
WOW. All I can say, is wow. THIS is art. Not only the singing, but expressions. At 7:10 I think I can spot she sheads a tear. Simply amazing❤😢
Phenomenal ! I can’t believe she is gone , one of the last true great opera Diva’s !
Who could resist surrender to this Majestic woman?!❤️🔥
I surrendered to you the first time I ever heard you Ms Norman ❤ youll forever be missed ❤❤❤
Jessaye at the top of her form-that voice! That technique! That diction! That presence! The Incomprable one in all her greatness and beauty.
So comforting to the ear and to the heart to hear French pronounced as it should be! A brilliant vocal actress!
Her acting. Her singing. Her interpretation of the works of dead men. She brings life to them and into her hearers. I am left speechless wrestling back control. She imprinted the depth of her gifts on us in a way that seems as the impression of the hand of the Divine. I am left shaken and hopeful.
She's completely immersed.
She is absolutely my favourite all time opera singer. No one can match her.
!!!!¼ĺpp
I agree wholeheartedly! Just a breathtakingly heartfelt connection of song and artist...
Stunning

One has to admit, this is perfection. Sweet Jesus
In tears... what a performance!
If you lived for a thousand years you would never hear it done better. Not by anyone. Not ever.
Not EVER! THIS WOMAN WAS THE BEST AT EVERYTHING SHE TOUCHED
Well said!

That transition at 6:15 minute is otherworldly. EXQUISITE!

I know her tongue is always soooo flat. I have tired this and failed
I saw her sing this aria live was only piano accompaniment and I was bawling through out the whole thing . EXQUISITE!!
Amen...
From the moment La Norman walks out until the earth-shattering final note, she holds the audience in thrall. Hypnotic. Sublime.
Yes, you never knew where she was going to take you, the audience was captivated
Good God! Can this be beyond perfection...? Is there such a thing?
Probably one of the best interpretations of this famous gorgeous Arias in all of Opera !
That ending sent chills down my spine. What a voice. What a legend. Incredible artist. Brava.
Full of risks and brilliant successes! We miss you, Ms. Jessye.

The music of st Saens has allaying been underrated or ignored. It shouldn’t be.
I WEEP EVERY TIME I WATCH. Thank God we were allowed to live while she was breathing and gave all that God equipped her to empower the world of arts with.
I saw here sing this live in recital in Philadelphia, I was a crying mess. Absolutely sublime!
How fortunate that we have Jessye Norman.
Her use of colours is pure magic.
Simply perfection!!
I'm so in love with this woman and her voice
Wow! Wow!! Wow!!!
Every time I watch this I cannot stop repeating it. What a performance!!!
right? 😁♥
Magistral! Bravo, madame Jessye ❤👏👏👏
Absolutely entrancing. Her ability to transport us to the scene is probably what they mean when they say to us “time travel”.
I love the story she once told about the encouragement she received from her hometown pastor. He told her to pursue a career in opera not only because he knew she could do it but also because he knew she should do it.

She takes you all, the voice creates a world and takes you with her. That last part was divine.
Sublime!
She is Beyond the Beyond !!!!❤
Probably the best performance ever…❤
Magnifique Jessye Norman merci beaucoup a vous , salut de Marseille !

With this performance Jessye Norman was completely in her own stratosphere & we miss you dearly 💖
Thank you for sharing.
I have watched this year's ago and it still touches my soul...Thank you Jessye...
Diva of Divas! No one! But Jessie Norman!
6:17-6:24 is the most stunning moment, incredible breath control absolutely gorgeous
The voice of an angel.
I had the privilege of hearing her sing twice in recital; in Houston, and in Chicago. What a gifted woman she was! I was in Augusta three years ago and a little taken aback to learn that her remains are buried in an unmarked grave there.
Magnificent ❤❤❤
Always a pleasure to hear her voice and watch her art in the interpretation
Stunning to listen to, stunning to behold, absolute perfection...
The ultimate diva!
It's divinity pure and simple 'sometimes there is god so quickly' - Tennessee Wiliams
She turns the aria into a mini drama. Absolutely riveting. No singer today has this level of charisma.
Not one
@@leshaundaShirley Verrett came close if not achieved it totally also.
Here the ambivalent love of Deliah for Samson is well expressed with her face. Brava!
Perfect technique, perfect diction, perfect breath control, perfect colouring, perfect phrasing - just perfect in every way. Trully astonishing Jessye ❤️❤️
And the audience goes insane! Fabulous!
i am melting 🙏🏻😍❤️

para mí, la emoción que trasmitió en esta presentación fue tal que me hizo llorar y sentir todo tan espectacularmente
Inacreditável!!! Maravilhosa!!
This is pure beauty, sublime
Utterly divine.
Ela demora pra sair do personagem, fantastica uma Diva.
