  • Is Petrol Dead?
Battery mowers are getting very good and without the need to worry about fuel, less maintenance, low noise and minimised operator fatigue it is starting to question the relevance of petrol mowers.
The Ego 52cm 56V Select Cut Mower is the latest from Ego in Australia and it really is a nice mower capable of a great cut finish and making the job of mowing a pleasure.
The motor is Brushless and the most powerful that Ego has in a mower and the kit comes with a 7.5Ah battery that will give you 50+ minutes of mowing and operating time. That is plenty for the home lawnie and it is also attractive to a lot more commercial operators.
The Battery is swappable with all Ego tools so quite easily the battery can go into the multi head for an edger attachment, then a whipper snipper, a blow to tidy up and will have a bunch of power left for the mow.
This mower is a super solid build. The mower sits at a nice weight that with the assistance of the self propelled feature makes for a very easy user experience.
A multi blade system really makes a sweet cut of even thick lawns. The twin blade creates more lift and stands the grass leaf up ready for the cut. If the grass is really long it'll get slashed at two points and this makes for smaller lawn clipping which will make better mulch or fit more clipping into the bag which means less trips to the greens bin whilst mowing. The bag is a huge 70L bag and will hold a load of clippings.
The construction is A1 and the handle and controls I have taken the time to really speak about because it is so well made and very comfortable. All the controls are at your hands and make sense. This is a very well thought out design that is for sure.
Taking it to the next level and realising that not all of us have massive sheds or garages (self included) making the mower fold up to a compact size and standing it up is just genius.
This mower will do 25mm - 90mm. I really do wish it went to 15mm but my new TifTuf at 25mm and only being a week and a bit old at the time of this loved it and you can see by the video the results are neat.
I had to go one better with cutting a lawn and I really had to know if it could handle a thick grass like Sir Walter Buffalo. I went to my friends place and cut theirs and all I can say is it did it with total ease. I wish I got this on a kikuyu but at least I now know it would handle it.
These are going for $1,149 thereabouts in most stores and while you might think it is a fair bit of coin for a rotary mower, if you are in the market for an excellent mower for you. thick lawn you would do very well with this. The added bonus of saving money on fuel and less maintenance and the fact that the battery works in all the other Ego tools to me is what wins the day, of of course that handle and controls..
Absolutely smashing it out of the Park EGO. Well Done!!!
So has this mower killed petrol. I don't think so because Petrol equipment has its place, does well and some people just plain prefer it so it aint dead yet.
Hope you are enjoying your lawn and your summer.
    Get your lawn on!!
