I wonder with such perfect memory, to the point where you remember the sense of touch and smell, how easy it must be to get lost in the past. Like, at that point, how do you distinguish the past from the present if you're reliving the past as if it just happened?

because the now is always more intense. a long term vivid memory in pictures scenes and smells and touch is not the same as the now. Its very close though. You can tell the past from the present because the past is stored vs the now is happening now. Many people with long term memory DO remember the touches and its hard. Many get depressed and turn to drugs for an escape. You only go down memory lane if you decide to unless you cant controll it or something sparks a memory. I can control mine. What i cant control is thinking in 100% pictures from the past but the now is just the camera.

@@jameshughes131 and what about knowledge? Are you interested in learning history or geography? And what about the news? Do you frequently read the newspaper? Sorry I'm just so curious... I imagine you must be very knowledgeable (if you are interested in those fields) and you could become a professor (if we add pedagogical skills), a researcher, etc. Obviously memory isn't the only skill you need, but you have that "advantage" that is hypermemory :)

I know one such person. He remembers people by their car numbers and vice versa for all the 5000+ cars registered in our town.
Even police calls him after accidents to find out whose car it was.
He does not save any number to his phone. You tell the number to him once and he remembers it forever. He simply dials from his memory.
He never got recognition as we live in a small city.

They probably are, and from what I understand it's extremely rare, like almost non-existent. Not even people who get medals for Olympic memory have photographic memory.
Memory isn't all there is to intelligence either. You can have perfect photographic memory, but you might not be able to process the information you've learned in a meaningful way or you can be cognitively impaired while still having perfect memory.

Savants cannot sustain themselves. They usually need caregivers, and struggle to function in a workplace. Kim Peek had a memory like this boy and couid name the postcode of any street in the US. Yet he struggled with simple mathematics.
The NSA dont need these people and computers store information now.
Lastly, Savants struggle with recognizing social cues, and are highly susceptible to being taken advantage of.

Sometime most gift ppl become lazy becuz they rely on their talent and know nth gonna go wrong anyways. If u look at some millionair. They never want to be millionair in the first place, they just wanna survive and found the thing they like. And it all start with struggle. These ppl dont struggle, dont fear or need to care too much. So they dont less thing.
      Compare japanese to cambodia.
Japanese always face natural disaster which lead them to develop smart brain to counter the disaster. They can fix road or stuff within days . Why ? Becuz they need to and it becone a talent. While Cambodian dont suffer any natural disaster are develop slower instead.

I have a memory from when I was 13 months old. But most of the memories are from 2 years old and forward. My husband thinks this is also why I tend to get anxious easily or be resentful since I tend to remember many details.
Whereas a person who doesn’t, can easily forget and not have fear as a way to survive or be easily resentful since they can forget most things.

The mind has a tendency to think about the negative things... some think this an evolutionary characteristic to basically keeps us safe and alive. Luckily we forget.. just imagine being able to remember everything. I would not want this at all. I meditate almost daily and make an effort to live in the present and leaving the past. I would not want to be able to recall it all like this. I think it would be very difficult to have mental peace with so much information available for your mind to explore.

Actually possessing such a memory can be bad because people like that can confuse reality with imagination and vice versa. Most people who have superb memory also have a perfect imagination. Memories usually have taste, color, and smell to them. Now imagine eating a poisonous food that would taste really bad to a normal person while imagining a bar of chocolate. In this case a person will think that the poisonous food tastes like chocolate therefore it is good. Sometimes it is hard to differentiate reality and imagination for these people. That's why humans have evolved forgetfulness so that we could function better in real world.

FWIW My memory comes back in this way when I've been seriously involved in certain types of meditation (especially vipassana). I can think of a time, even decades ago, and it is alive, like I'm there. It's very vivid, to the point of being not only just as real as it was at the time, but I would say even more so. It's very vivid and present.
Usually I don't have this ability.
Certain types of meditation heighten or intensify attentiveness or awareness. And they quiet down the miscellaneous chatter in the mind. They do both.

I don't think I think I can say I have a "photographic" memory but I do have an unusually good memory. As did my father and his. My IQ as of a test I took last year was 136 (not that it matters but I mention it as it may have something to do with it) But It is truly a curse. There's so many things in life I find most people can forget about, but I never forget. It's such a detriment to my mental health, and I often find myself envious of people with normal memories.
Edit: the only thing I even use it for is music lol learning/playing/reading/composing
