He just worked, went home, took a shower, ate one meal a day at home. I knew nothing about him. He had a stroke. A stroke damages the brain, and while trying to recover other parts of the brain may wake up. All of a sudden my dad decided he wanted to paint. He had my mother drive him to an art store. He came out with an easel, high end paints, brushes, canvas and charcoal. Look, he once took me out to a dept. store, gave me $22. and said "buy a whole new wardrobe, your clothes are awful". He did not spend money. And here he was buying something he thought was frivilous. And he started painting. Stuff from looking out window, stuff from dreams. He never even doodled before. yeah best comment ever and I think that psychedelics do something similar , btw this re affirm the beliefs of Pythagoreans about everything is math. I think there have to be other ways to reach to this background process in our brain , maybe with meditation or something like that lol
Wow...That is the exact experience I and many others have on psychedelics. The mathematical representation of literally everything through fractals and shapes...The thorough understanding of the entire history of the universe, the entire essence of life. Amazing that he received a psychedelic effect from an accident.
The only time I saw fractals was when I got drunk off japanese plum wine. And I mean I drank a whole bottle. I laid under a tree at a park. And all of the branches and leaves started to spiral until there wasn't anything but fractals. I thought it was pretty cool. And yes plum wine is something I think every one should experience at least once in their lives.
"A Beautiful Mind" is the best movie about a man who suffers greatly from Schizophrenia, but is a math genius. Also, Albert Einstein who was Dyslexic also was a math genius. How do you think we got E=MC2? 😉
I was a "Maths genius" until I was 15 ... then I had a "stroke" (or maybe it was epilepsy?) and the focus of my intellect became language. I literally lost interest in maths and began "seeing" the complexity of human language communication. What seems to have happened was a switch from what they call left-brain logical thinking to right-brain thinking. Prior to this I very seldom spoke and had difficulty understanding written and spoken language. Immediately after I'd recovered from the physical effects of the stroke/epilepsy (which lasted for about 15 minutes) I found myself experiencing a "world of meaning" when I read or listened to speech that I'd never experienced before. My experience of music and the human voice also changed.
Thank you for sharing this story it is very touching. my daughter had a electric pole fall on her head when she was 4 and we are struggling in school. This put a smile on my face because she is very gifted in her art work and we are very very hard to get her up the speed with her math and reading.

My god this is absolutely fascinating, it is as if (considering you see the brain as a computer) he had access to 'lower level' parts of his brain processing the usual movement, visualization etc... This would mean, our brain ALREADY HAS tons of mathematical capabilities that we shouldn't have access to and that we 'learn a second time' at school. According to what he says, he actually sometimes needs to think about a concept to understand it. But his thought process is more like: "now what does it mean for the universe ? How does the universe does that ?" And this makes sense, our brains evolved and got more complicated thanks to (or because of) our environment, therefore, our 'deep' thought processes are completely related to that same environment (concrete stuff and not abstract stuff). For instance: "what does F=GMm/r² mean ? Oh yeah ! it's the force that pushes me against the floor !" or "what is -1/2gt²+v0.cos(a) ? oh yeah ! it's the curve a ball draws in the sky when I launch it !" I WANT to search more about that, this is more than a gift, it's like the ultimate way to do math (aka use what our brains are already doing in the background).
You can talk about the low point of your life with ease only when you have overcome by far. His demeanour is so comfortable talking about his past ignorance in front of so many crowd.
I agree, except before warp is possible, we need fusion, then antimatter reactors. The power needed to travel warp is immense. I could power all of earth with one of my prototype reactors, but have not solved all needed mathmatical calculations.
@Brayan Carmona we could theoretically achieve teleportation through quantum teleportation using the theory of entanglement. In fact we already did achieve this by teleporting data. However, the issue with this in order to teleport something we have to replicate its particles which in turn destroys the original particles. There’s a risk that if you teleport a person they may not be actually the same.
This is so cool and he is so fortunate! I got struck in the head and all I got was a concussion and post concussion syndrome. My IQ actually went down 😞😭

There are MANY examples of brain injuries resulting in savant behavior. This goes to show that even the tiniest "rewiring" of the brain can have MASSIVE results: Usually bad, but sometimes good. Strange, the brain is, innit?

Hi! Would you like to change ideas. There's some natural beauty in chaos, and the Mandelbrot set. There's a code to life in fractals and I think conscience has something to do with Claustrum's actions. But these are complex topics which have complex numbers and I don't yet understand and doubt I'll ever truly will. So if you want to chat we could do it over Telegram or whatever you're comfortable with. Fyi, from Finland had this "awakening" and ideas of these concepts before I even researched them. It's honestly scary and I feel borderline crazy, but I'm constantly mind blown about all these similarities and coincidences that I keep finding.
Mr Padgetts' ability to so so clearly and fluently articulate What's going on in his mind with his new math abilities tells me he gained more than just math skills.
imagine if we could turn on abilities like this in anyone!! I hope brain science continues to compound to find solutions for brain injuries but to also improve the average person’s intelligence
The "framing" he is describing is known medically as "visual trails." You can get them as a side effect of taking some medications. I got them once after taking Klonopin (Clonazepam) for insomnia. It didn't help my math though. My physician took me off of it because of the visual trails and other side effect. I had to "taper" it off to keep from suffering benzodiazepine withdrawal. Took forever.
Actually, this simplified an answer to a questions I had; a year ago I was driving and suddenly saw a flash of light with a strong eye pain- thought it was either the sun or i was going to get one of my migraines- but simultaneously, my 28 year old daughter, whom was sitting in passenger seat, grab her same eye and starting yelling from eye pain-! I pulled over on a gravel road- cupping my own eye and reached out to help her- she asked why I was cupping my eye when it was hers that was hurting! I explained what happened to me when I suddenly heard her yell out for help- turned out we had the same level of pain (6-7) in same eye- but the sun was not on her side of car- ruled out the sun as her cause. A year later (a few weeks ago) it happened again- but this time it was a sudden and short-lived jaw pain! I do believe we are all mathematically connected when interacting. Not just when attractions happen- but we can share pain and suffering in instant time as well- how? Our bodies start connecting more and more and reacting faster to ppl as we spend more time with them. They either start to repel bad situations for brain and body protection (brain needs body in order to get around). So brain reacts in the same way to close exposure to tell us of pain. The thing about math is- that is is un-evolved- it’s always been here. It’s a coded message. We just tap into it, discovering it. Math is a language- language takes a giver and receiver. Language is coded information. Language, as far as we know, comes from Mind only. Mathematics proved there is a creator of the coded language. Note: this man doesn’t mention this fact - he’s too scared to go there! But he knows it! I see it too! I was terrible in math and needed a tutor until one day I read my calculus’ professors book on quantum physics- a few days into reading I got hit in head with a nail gun! Worst pain ever! Migraines ever since- but my skills and knowledge levels quickly began to change- I went in to get my masters in science and doctorate in divinity- was trying to find the answers to all those ‘sudden’ questions I had developed about humanity and the Universe! Atheists avoid me at all costs! I share fractals with them- and they refuse to see Beyond their own little world- worshipping the creation rather than the Mind of Being - Brain- Creator- whose word is the forms, patterns, and fractals of all things in existence. We are just discovering His thoughts after Him.
The gift is that most humans don’t have to think about these things while they perform them. It’s sad to realize that his brain is glitching in a sense forcing him to calculate the most mundane things in this world. Both a blessing and a curse.
So, his story is absolutely fascinating and shows us how little we understand about neuroscience. But the other thing that sticks out to me in this story is that this brain-injured guy couldn't get an MRI in the United States because he didn't have insurance. He had to fly around the globe to get medical treatment for free. What a country.
This is truly amazing. There is another savant he's from England and he, too sees things mathematically and it also comes from intuition and the cosmos. This is all very metaphysical.
The only amazing thing about this person is his ability to sell the idea of being a genius. He is a talented graphic artist but I don’t see and couldn’t find any evidence of mathematical knowledge other than basic concepts.
I had the exact same thing happen to me I fell backwards split my head wide open felt cold never felt any pain. To this day my mind refuse s to do any math. I won't even count change I round up.
This is amazing. I’ve always understood math to be like like.. of course I am never able to figure it all out like he can, but what he’s explaining is exactly what I’ve theorized and imagined
My son has a moderate learning disability in math. He learns things differently due to a neurological disorder. He's very smart, but he definitely does not benefit from the one size fits all education system. Once he picks up a new skill he soars, but it takes a long time. I wish this guy lived in my area and would tutor my son. His way of explaining math is so simple! I think my son would finally understand. He's a freshman in high school and there's no way that he will graduate with a regular diploma because he cannot show that he has mastered the basic required math skills to graduate. He will have to earn a modified diploma instead which makes attending any sort of college or trade school impossible. He wants to go to college and I haven't yet found the courage to crush him.
Regarding Jason's comments on the complexity of calculation behind catching a ball, I have always thought about Michael Jordan in this way. Michael standing at the top of the circle and contemplating a drive or a shot (or, last resort, pass to a teammate )...at least three defensive player in motion with the potential of interfering with a drive to the basket and layup, layin, dunk, etc. I have realized the Michael is doing a mass of calculations of how fast things can happen, at what angles, what was the vertical and horizontal reach of all the defenders, how high could they jump, etc. I don't think all the computer power in the world could work out all the possibilities in advance; Michael had to recognize his best (or a good) possibility to score and put it into motion. As he did so, defenders were actually moving in ways he could not possibly have worked out with precision and he is having to make many fresh computations on-the-fly as he adjusts his move or, perhaps, aborts it. Bottom line, what I always said about this situation was that if his brain were a conventional computer, the lights would go dim all over Chicago to meet the demands of these calculations. (I'm not joking. Maybe trying to be a little bit cute, but I do think that the way he evaluated his situation required immense, ulta high speed calculating power. Michael is the king but we all have some of this and some of us have a lot of it, something we do so naturally that we don't even perceive what is really going on.)

Sam Rockwell should play him
Einstein didn't invent that formula, it was an Italian math genius called Olinto De Pretto (search it up). Actually Einstein was a plagiarist.

My exact thoughts! The deeper I go into science, the clearer it is that-as you succinctly put it-there is a creator of the coded language.
duck tales
It’s very strange how accidents can sometimes rewire your brain chemistry
The gift is that most humans don’t have to think about these things while they perform them. It’s sad to realize that his brain is glitching in a sense forcing him to calculate the most mundane things in this world. Both a blessing and a curse.
So, his story is absolutely fascinating and shows us how little we understand about neuroscience. But the other thing that sticks out to me in this story is that this brain-injured guy couldn't get an MRI in the United States because he didn't have insurance.
I like your point. Michael Jordan was a math savant in a physical way.
The attacker should get a nobel prize
