amazing how so many young people are enjoying 50 year old music....such is the magic of YES....All of their 70s stuff is this good, great story tellers and bringers of emotion
It is so satisfying to watch people discover and immediately come to love music that I have known and loved for 50 years. Her face takes on a euphoric glow as she listens. It's enchanting to see and is itself the perfect accompaniment to this musical gem.

So many times listening to YES back in the day. Straight, stoned, and otherwise. When the album came out we played the grooves off of it. Only saw them once in concert but it was EPIC. I think every measure of this song and so many others by YES are permanently etched into my brain. Not a problem. Enjoy.
Great musicians with an educated bent on their music that transported them up, out and away-higher clearer, quicker, cleaner and then back...and forth again.
Yes is my favorite prog rock band. I also discovered them as a teenager; this song, And You And I, is one of my top three from them, along with Starship Trooper and Close To The Edge. Great reaction, Sarah!
The song that got me into Yes, was Yours Is No Disgrace from the Yes Album. It was 1970,I was almost 14 and it totally changed my musical t as taste. You must listen!
I was lucky to have 4 older brothers who were all in to Yes from the start. Time and a word is the one I remember that got me hooked. And it only got better!
@@SarahDengler you must react to: Turn of the Century and Awaken, from the Going for the one album... you may discover a lot of feelings inside yourself
You get IT!!! Such musicianship in YES but such emotion from every song....it just swells you! So happy you found them as a young person who would not know about them!
The magic of Close to the Edge is forever. Imagine, if you can, standing at the edge of the stage, right in the center, even resting your arms on the stage and hearing this for the first time! They had released Close to the Edge just a week before, so very few in the audience had heard this. I’m a born again Christian, have been a believer since I was a child, so I say this with the greatest honesty; seeing Yes live in 1972 was a life changing experience. I don’t compare it to my faith because man will always fail you. But Close to the Edge, with its symphonic arrangements was truly life changing for me and the 7 guys who traveled 5 hours to attend this concert.
Yes in the '70s had the ability to take their listeners on a journey. The more you listen to them the more you'll hear in their music in the more you appreciate their it's wonderful to see young people discovering this music I first heard it long ago when I was 15 stoned at a party. I subscribe to your channel keep up the good work Sarah.
It is a beautiful thing watching your first reactions to the Yes recordings from the album 'Close to the Edge'. These are the creations of the masters of progressive rock and often take many listens to understand. I have been listening to Yes for half a century and still am surprised. I hope you continue to find value in their craft.
They bring me on a journey of love and discovery in every song they do.On this one i remember my wife and i at a place called buttermilk falls. We were just ambling about the woods following the stream and there were chipmunks dancing around.I had some trail mix and bent down to one of the little creatures and he ran up to my hand ate a piece then rushed off in the fallen leaves. This scene played as they played
The music of my youth, still loved and listened to today 50 years later, over the years I've met every member of this classic line up of the greatest prog rock band of all time, each and every one of them made time to speak to a fan Chris Squire was always the inspiration to learn to play the bass Finally got a Rickenbaker of my own You're in for an amazing journey going through the many incarnations of Yes
Hello Sarah, I enjoyed seeing your reaction to the yes songs, from my perspective a lot of their songs are designed to turn you inside out and in the end you are left with That wich ia always present In our heart….being…beauty and love The song ‘the gates of delirium is a long track and in the beginning it’s like your in a war zone, but it’s designed to lead you to peace thru ups and downs being turned inside out but the outcome is always peace, tranquility, beauty and that wich is real…in this world of confusion, you’ll be in for a ride but it is worth the journey, you won’t regret it, much love, chris
Classically trained musicians with multiple vocalists going off in experimentat jazz directions that were beyond me back in the day - not your mainstream rock, and I saw them several years ago with their faithful fan following there. At that time they were good enough to have two Yes bands, one playing North America, the other playing in Europe. Massive talents.
It was a lot of fun watching you discover this music, Sarah. A lot of Yes music is like that, especially from their most inspired period, from 1971 to 1977, when they turned out six amazing albums in rapid fashion. The lyrics, yes, are often metaphorical and combine with the music to take you out of your normal state of consciousness into higher worlds. A lot of people insist they are nonsense lyrics but not to me. They invoke images which have meaning in themselves and take you out of your normal way of thinking. If you explore more of their music from that period I'm sure you will be surprised at how different one thing is from another, but equally brilliant and often awe inspiring.
YES just had the ability to construct beauty...this is one of their "minor" epics, but is just so wonderful, and peaceful, and thoughtful...it carries you along...sweeps you up and deposits you, carefully and safely at the end of one of Life's little voyages! The starkness and cleanness of some of the guitar and keyboard work is...angelic? Heavenly? A living organism, growing and swirling. Love this band - and love that young people are discovering it! (As others have mentioned!)
I first heard that in 1972 I think when I was a teenager. It had the same affect then and in fact still does. Once you have been moved by Yes and all their 70’s stuff nothing is quite the same again musically 👏👏❤️
A great song on from a great album by a great band!!! This album I recommend listening to the WHOLE ALBUM. It's truly a work of art. Then I really do recommend listening to all their albums. Over and over .YES !!!! They really are true masters of music and lyrics Sarah . 🙂 Glad you got to experience it and that you liked it. Loved your reaction ,"I smiled a whisper knowing all about the place" 🎼🙂☮️❤️
It’s lovely to see you discovering my favourite bands from 50 years ago. This is another band that I saw at the amazing 1975 Reading Festival. Close to the Edge is possibly my all-time favourite album.
I was there too. God, did it rain! The rain did augment the brilliant fan of green laser light over our heads, though, and added to what was an amazing experience! Awesome!
Along with Pink Floyd, Genesis, and ELP, Yes was one of my favorite bands growing up. Like so many progressive-rock bands, they experimented with sound and kept the musicianship at a high level. Just about anything they released from their first six albums is gold. (I confess that many find the album Tales from Topographic Oceans hard to listen to, and I did for a number of years; but it is remarkable for its unapologetic virtuosity.) "Close to the Edge" itself is a great song, as are "Roundabout" (their first big hit, I think) and "Yours Is No Disgrace." Their first two albums are often forgotten or overlooked, but "Looking Around" and "Sweet Dreams" are worth listening too. Loved seeing you discover this brilliant band! Thank you again for what you do!
The greatest 5 musicians to come together, to create (arguably) the greatest album ever! Now you HAVE to listen to the last song on the album..."Siberian Khatru". And, when you get the chance, listen to this album from beginning to end...as it was meant to be. Their 2 album set "Tales from Topographic Oceans" is an absolute masterpiece also. Give it a try! Thanks Sarah...love your reactions!
been watching some yes and got caught up in younger people reacting you made my day , the way it can still ,after all these years, have such an effect... it still wells me up realise that classical music does the same but this is somehow different being contemporary that is so often fleeting
Jon has a very angelic voice. When I pass I believe, or maybe I hope, it will be his voice beckoning me into heaven. Enjoyed your reaction to my favorite band of all time. Hope you enjoy discovering more of their music. Peace to you.
I was about to dedicate this song and I saw this in the recommendations, I just want to say that your eyes show the truth of your reaction, thanks for being so cute and authentic and listening to Yes, one of the most purely beautiful bands 💓 greetings 🌱
I just watched your CTTE reaction, wonderful. I was gonna recommend this song but now I see you already have 👍 This is from my generation, and it always moves me to tears. I used to sing it to my daughter when she was falling asleep.
Glad you reacted to this I hope do more of their songs. I listen to them for over 48 years and still do to this day. I look forward to more of your reactions.
It is a joy to watch your face as you listen to this music. I like that you just listen and don't stop the music several times as some other reaction people do. With the Close To The Edge album by Yes you have started at the apex of this band's music ( there are several other great albums by them as well ) but good for you and best wishes that you may hear many of their other magnificent tunes. They are rather special.
The lyrics are not about the end my friend, they are about a spiritual beginning. Love this. The more you listen to it the more you'll love it and its' hidden jewels of knowledge.
Hi Sarah, after watching your video I looked them up, I had heard them before, early to mid eighties, Owner Of A Lonely Heart was a big hit, they are very unique with their instrumentals and harmonies, I like them ❤️
I actually wish there was a music video for this, the instrumentals are so interesting, so many time changes, and tone changes. It would be nice to see the story that they are telling.
You may want to check 3 live versions: 1972 - ua-cam.com/video/PbS56p4Xt4I/v-deo.html 2001 - with an orchestra - ua-cam.com/video/wygdzRPsJa0/v-deo.html 2003 - same lineup as 1972 - ua-cam.com/video/y5BXBJstDN4/v-deo.html 1972's performance was right after releasing the record. They were young, in their twenties. Unfortunately video quality is not that good. 2001 and 2003 performances show a very mature band and have high quality sound and image.
If you enjoyed this, I have good news. There is still a lot to discover from this music. My first Yes album (it was a couple of decades ago; I was 13 or 14) was the triple live album YESSONGS. (I highly recommend it). It might sound a bit pathetic, but this music has really changed and shaped my life a bit. On occasion you may listen to "I've Seen All Good People" or "Heart Of The Sunrise" from the YESSONGS album.
Not Even A Tiny Bit Pathetic. This band transcends all others, and is infused into my very essence. Steve Howe is why I started playing guitar 45 years ago. Seen them twice, they are incredible Live. Yessongs would be me Desert Island Album no doubt.
I think Yessongs is the best live set ever made. But I think she should hear the studio versions first. They are amazing and pure and also great. Then with Yessongs you learn how Yes went the next level with already amazing songs in front of the fans. For me Yessongs side 6 is great and really showcases some extremely talented musicians.
@@your_local_dummy4137 I agree, Compositions this Magnificent should be heard in their pristine form, then Live. I still prefer the recorded perfection of CTTE.
@@your_local_dummy4137 Of course you can see it that way too. My first Yes album was Yessongs. When I later listened to the studio albums, (the recording quality is much better, Anderson can sing several voices with himself and other "gimmicks" that only work in the studio ...) I was still "missing something" in many places on these recordings. Partly because the live songs have been further developed by the arrangement, partly because the songs are played with more power and passion.
This was my go to for losing myself in music. I think it is both a love song and a tone poem of words that sound great. So much of the imagery in the lyrics is impossible and surreal. It ends in an up-note from which I've carried a positivity after a listen. So glad you enjoyed this beautiful piece. I'm. going to recommend Your Move/I've Seen All Good People from the Yes Album for continued Yes music.
Yes is not only a journey; it is an investment. And the returns are immeasurable. Without even mentioning countless solo projects, under the YES brand, there are like 300 songs! ALL GOOD, most genial, often spiritual :)
Nice reaction. I'm so glad you liked your first time listening to them. Yes were formed in 1968 by Jon Anderson & Chris Squire.Their first album, titled YES was released in '69. This song, "And You and I" was off their fifth studio album CLOSE TO THE EDGE. They are probably the best progressive rock band ever, imo. They always seem to have a positive attitude in their music. Very uplifting stuff.
Hi Sarah, lovely reaction, I fell in love with Yes after listening to this song 47 years ago, I'm sure I've played it over a thousand times since and love it even more now then ever. They are a very special group and arguably the greatest progressive rock band of all time. If I could think of one word to describe what they're all about it would be "Love". So much more wonderful Yes music for you to explore, may I recommend for starters "Starship Trooper", "Roundabout", "Turn of the century" and "Wonderous Stories" enjoy the journey, Cheers
Watching your Pink Floyd reactions and seeing how much you like/love the 'long-form' song format, I immediately thought you should check this one out. Imagine my surprise when you already have. You have made me a new subscriber. Thank you Sarah.
Man for man, album by album, YES was without question the most original, creative and talented progressive rock band of its generation. Their compositions were nothing short of brilliant. Unique. Anderson's voice, Squire's bass, Howe's incredible application of guitar in such a demanding form, Bruford/White and the odd time signatures, and Wakeman's keys--untouchable band as a unit.
Welcome to spiritual reality. I can't think of any tour spanning 4 decades or more when this song was not on the set list. Timeless, ageless music created my musicians who where masters of their trade, yet all of them were only in their mid 20's at the time of recording. Yes were the pioneers of progressive rock.
When I bought this album in 1973 there were no lyric sheet...we all had to wing it! In 2004 this was one of the album's I took out into the Sahara with me on an MP3...where no-one could tell me that I could not sing.
Yes is awesome. When I played their records when I was a teen in the 70's, my WWII generation mother commented "these boys seem like they actually went to school and studied their music". You should check out some of the live version of this piece. Wow is right!
These are great suggestions for someone who fell for Yes via And You and I. It’s a little too early for The Gates of Delirium. Thanks for mentioning In the Presence Of. That song never seems to get enough love. The live version with the orchestra is inspiring.
Yes. You can still discover a whole Yes universe. And you are already close to it, close to the edge. ^^ Go on this adventure. Discover Wonderous Stories, Awaken and so much more... By the way, I saw Yes live in 1984 in San Francisco. @ Flo Maleur: Fun Fact: Yessongs was also my first Yes album.
Yes is amazing. There is so much amazing music from this band and the various members have made a ton of great solo music also. If you like the more mellow pretty music try Wonderous Stories, Turn Of The Century, Onward, Hearts. If you want to hear more commercial fun music from them try I've Seen All Good People, Roundabout, Owner Of A Lonely Heart. If you want to hear music that will be a real musical awakening that will blow your mind, try Awaken, Close To The Edge, Heart Of The Sunrise.
So glad you like Yes, Sarah! I thought that the rather radical transitions would throw you, not to mention the lyrics, written more for the way the words sound than a specific meaning... Yes is one of my holy prog trinity, along with Emerson, Lake, & Palmer, and Jethro Tull; among them you've got hundreds of hrs of magical music to explore!!!
Because you do not shy away from the long songs, I second the recommendation for the song “Close To The Edge.” I believe it is the pinnacle achievement of Yes, and of this entire genre of ‘progressive’ rock music. A miracle of a song. And while I’m at it, this perfect album has just one final track, “Siberian Khatru.” It’s another gem - all three songs on this album are completely different from one another, yet are equally great in their own ways. After hearing these three songs, I think you will have a full understanding of just what this unique and amazing band is all about. And then, maybe, hopefully, you’ll be hooked on them - and your journey will have begun!

Partly because the live songs have been further developed by the arrangement, partly because the songs are played with more power and passion.
welcome to the world of Progressive Rock, it was such an awesome thing to grow up during this period of amazing music
Lovely reaction x
This, along with "Wonderous Stories" are IMO, the most beautiful music written by Yes.
Agreed. But I almost always go to Wondrous Stories when I need that kind of fix.
....and Awaken and Turn of the Century.
This is God's music 💖
Love
Can't wait to check more of their out! The world needs more uplifting stuff
@@SarahDengler I agree completely.
@@SarahDengler Even though I'm 60 (and I've listened to this hundreds of times), your reaction at 4:15+ gave me tears...
Thank you Sarah.
wow!
Brilliant!
I found my self....we found us...love..thanks your emotions
This is so sad and beautiful. Be with the one you love when hearing this
back then every sound had to be crafted and this is why this sounds so good
Watching you, I'm 13 again, listening to this for the first time and pretty well experiencing everything you are going through in this video!
Yes 👍💪. I recommend Wondrous Stories, or Turn of the century, or In the presence of, or whatever song, they are the best band. Thx.
Thanks for the suggestions🙂
These are great suggestions for someone who fell for Yes via And You and I. It’s a little too early for The Gates of Delirium.
Thanks for mentioning In the Presence Of. That song never seems to get enough love. The live version with the orchestra is inspiring.
@@rtwbikerider yes, In the presence of- is among their best songs, I agree. Thx.
Amazing
Yes is amazing. There is so much amazing music from this band and the various members have made a ton of great solo music also. If you like the more mellow pretty music try Wonderous Stories, Turn Of The Century, Onward, Hearts. If you want to hear more commercial fun music from them try I've Seen All Good People, Roundabout, Owner Of A Lonely Heart. If you want to hear music that will be a real musical awakening that will blow your mind, try Awaken, Close To The Edge, Heart Of The Sunrise.
Awesome, thank you for all the suggestions, adding them to my list
@@SarahDengler You really should do the title track for this album: "Close to the Edge" first.
Do not forget Perpetual Change.
And do not overlook "The Gates of Delirium". Or for that matter all of Relayer.
Wonderful! I'm about to dive into YES rabbit hole 🕳
i wish i still had all my yes albums.
This is one of my favs from Yes. There is a couple of different ways to play it too!
