They're a great idea for those who want more quick access control. Bit expensive, but you get what you pay for. Also if it supports SMT without having to buy an ODB2 dongle, that's a great value prop.
So many are missing the point of these buttons (which I’ve known about for months). As Bjorn said, this was product is made by a Tesla enthusiast. Not a critic. They saw an opportunity that legacy car makers can’t and won’t provide, but Tesla can. Not only can you assign purpose to each button (which you can’t do with traditional UI - that radio button will ALWAYS be the radio button), you can change its purpose, and its location, any time you like. You can even get rid of the buttons if you change your mind. Personally, I would not get them - a clean, button-free interior is a big plus in my book. I love it. I’m not one of these people who’s always futzing with settings. But I think it’s pretty cool that a Tesla enthusiast came up with them - for anyone who WANTS them. Not because VW or Kia or whatever has a designer who dictates you HAVE TO have them, and where they are, what they do, and how they do it are set in stone. Choice. That’s the point
you could just press the charge port to open it. Is faster than using the door for it. There is one thing I still miss. That it quick access to the fog lights. But the buttons are to big for my taste. A smaller one to enable/disable fog lights, would be nice.
The button needs to fit the battery. Design is often a compromise, just like your smartphone; most people don't want to carry a brick, so they first had phones that didn't last a full day... Now the phone last a whole day and charge quickly, so they can make the phones thinner or put more in it. Now how much would you like the buttons, if you had to replace batteries every month, if they were a bit smaller? Like Björn said, you want to place them out of sight, like behind the display.
Pretty cool idea. I guess since I dont have any Tesla yet i havnt got any targeted ads. Also love that they combined with the scan my tesla app. As soon as I get a Tesla i'd buy that. And why not then get the buttons instead if they are working together. Perhaps there is no use case for an extra button for a model S for instance. If any S/X owners finds an immediate use case would be cool to hear :)
On my model 3 all you have to do is give the charge port a little push and it will open. To stop charging you need to use the app or screen though, unless you have a Tesla wall charger with the button
Great video! By the way, how did you wrap or make the panel above your passengers window on drivers side back on top? It’s awesome how the tinted window blends…
There is LOADS of completely empty space on the Tesla screen that Tesla should allow the user to put shortcut "buttons" on, but Tesla is not interested in giving owners what they want. You should be able to configure your screen just the way you want it, but no, you are forced to live with their vision of how it should be, whether you like it or not. Frustrating!! That would be my biggest complaint about my car.
Some things are in some places on the screen for safety reasons. Some things, future will bring. Most likely 3rd party apps. And that's gonna take Tesla to a whole new level
Hi Bjorn! I was considering buying these but no. I am looking for a simple way to switch between air recycling and air flowing but this feature seems not to be included. Sad, as in France I have to use this regularly as we have loads of smelly diesels still on the road… And the voice command is so long and boring too…
That is brilliant, I never cared for having the majority of controls burried in a touch screen. It's very unsafe to be using the screen while driving. Do they have this for other brands as well?
Bjørn, I do like that sheeeet! 😀I really like the "hold the door handle to open the frunk" feature, which I had not seen on other reviews. Tesla Bjørn FTW! I also would like a glovebox button on the back of the screen. BTW, I can just press the bottom of the charge port door to open it, if the car is unlocked. I also can just press the individual dome lights to toggle them on and off. This works on my 2018 Model 3, and I don't see a need for using the SEXY buttons for those functions.
Hy biorn, what model and year tesla y will work with these buttons. I see that it only works on tesla y 2019.can you help me witch tesla will work with these buttons
14:47 on a iPhone you don't need to wait until the App is loaded and there car connected. you can open the App, press the "open Frunk" Button and confirm. The Frunk will open directly.
As far as the charge connector goes, if you have your phone with the app, all you have to do to disconnect is press the button on the charger handle. But pressing the handle button to open the charge port doesn't work unless the car is already awake.
thanx for the great review! coming from an ioniq i really missed the 0 gen coasting feature! i was excited to see that with this " hack " you can get 0 -regen again! does it rememmber the setting after a car shut down? and can you set it to 0 gen, and then unplug the commander and dont use the buttons anymore,? and still have 0 gen on. thanx
Unfortunately without the blended braking the Ioniq has you'll be using the mechanicals for everything if you do that. Be careful of brake fade on long hill descents (unless cruise will still hold speed with regen like the Ioniq did).
I might put one to open the dashboard and maybe one or two other things. Living in Australia the shipping will probably cost more than the buttons (haven’t checked prices yet). Last time I ordered off abstract ocean it cost me $43 USD or about $60 AUD for some console wraps.
Nice option to have. My only concern is if Tesla decide to change how the car changes things these buttons will be useless until sexy buttons send a software update. Tesla could also block this type of product from working if they they think it’s a safety issue etc.
I like this sh1t! I bought them, but am waiting for my MIG Model Y. 😋 Planned so far: behind the wheel the regen and wiper buttons. Somewhere on the center console a button for hazard lights (most people around me are used to having one there, not overhead). Maybe an orange cover for this one, or an orange sticker, and phosphorescent maybe? I've mentioned your channel and a few others (Neulich an der Ladesäule) in a mail correspondence. 😄
3:27 - Will all of that sheeeeet fit in there?? BUT, the functionality I want is to raise the suspension on Model S. Does the documentation say anything about doing that?
Lovely idea! :D And I've little suggestion for the manufacturer. Me wants 'AC fan & audio OFF/ON' function, please! What for? It can be very useful on blind junctions, where you can hear approaching vehicles, with side window(s) down, many seconds before they are visible. Now I must turn off fan & audio manually and turn them on after, one by one.. :/
Surely rotating the scroll wheel on steering wheel to volume zero in approximately 1 second is quicker than moving your hand to touch a button to turn radio off so you can hear?
Thanks for a thorough test as allways - I'm a recent EV driver (old MB250e commuter car, waiting for a MIB MY LR.) and I'm actively using coasting as a means of driving as frugal as possible. Rolling over hilltops, down slack slopes that offer no possibility for regen, using small downhills to increase speed and rolling up hill again (within speedlimit + vat) etc... Do you think this has any purpose - or does it have a significant impact (as in real-world effect) on the consumption? Would this be worth a test when driving windy, hilly biundesstrasse that people use every day? A motorway test here would maybe not yield any difference as there is less coasting and rolling opportunities(?) Thoughts anyone?
As someone with a MB250e and a MY LR. You dont need to drive frugal with the Y. It is so efficient even when having fun or driving around in city traffic
@@mariueg Oh, no doubt the MY is going to be a completely different thing, no worries on that one 😁 But it's fun to see how far you can go with a 2017 250e - current record is 170 km (12C, dry roads ~60 km/h avg. speed) with 12km left on the "guessometer" :D
What is really needed is the chance to configure more features from the Tesla screen… they fill their mouth with “user experience” but they cut the experience to their wishes, no the customers’ one… shocking. Best example is the trips box that has disappeared from the driving screen… and there is no way to bring it back..
Yes the loss of the trips card is a pain ... but voice is now reliable for this so at least you can say "show trips" without having to tap the screen multiple times.
Forgot to mention about battery preconditioning option when you go to a non tesla fast chargers. Very useful feature not available on tesla screen menus.
mmm maybe these could solve the issues with the stalkless design on the Highland. Could add the turn signals to the buttons and place them to the backside of the steering wheel. Interesting but very pricy. is it known what is the lifetime of the batteries in these buttons?
The fact there is such a product shows that people would much rather have physical buttons for certain features and not have everything controlled through touchscreen.
@@TomasJogin I think most people with a Tesla will not even be aware that such a product exists. I personally think the more buttons the merrier, like the Kia e-Niro.
@@TomasJogin Do you think that after this video, there will be some extra orders on this product? If no, you are right. I personally think yes, there will be. Myself is one giving those extra orders…

This was the main feature I wanted because I live in a rainy environment. Everyone please reach out to the developers and ask them to enable the incremental wiper speed functions once again. It's in the UI but the wipes only actually move to the 4 speeds and auto. Please help us get this back. Thanks for your support.

its still 2022, we still need to push buttons, other wise why we buy the clicky loud keyboards? we not at star trek level yet, even in star trek voyager introduced physical buttons on one of their star ships.
I like this shit. Tesla's shit is crap in terms of manual wiper controls, because they are not readily available. Having to call the settings out is one input too much and according to Elon, all input is error, so that's extra bad. I have 2 buttons behind the left side of the steering wheel, so now I can adjust the speed up and down without letting my hands go of the wheel. And no, I don't have time or patience to wait for the voice command to work (which it often even doesn't because my Finnish accent).
There is actually a pressure sensor on the charge port door. Next time just press the lower right corner and it will open. No need for other shenanigans. Also if you really want speedy frunk, trunk and climate controls, just get Nikola app for iOs and you can control a lot of stuff from your apple watch. That feature alone is worth the money.
I like these buttons but maybe not for regen since I always have it on 100% anyway. But also this video show how damn good Tesla's software have in their cars ! Some competitors should go home in shame... (I have a ZS EV so I assume I can't use them anyway)
The buttons are cool but I don't really see myself investing in them. The OBD Install though... getting that plastic flap open and plugging it in is fine, but ut doesn't look like you would be able to close it with the OBD connected, right?
It might depend on the climate where you drive. Here where I live we have various surfaces in the winter months. Sun and dry road, but around a corner there is slushy ice... Quick press on a button to disable regen while passing the slushy icy hill might save the day.
@@EnhanceAuto-S3XY_Gadgets I would vote for that very much. I usually go with AP on speed limits, so would use the buttons to set the speed directly to 50, 70, 80 or 130 km/h.
Now that I have a new 2023 Model Y AWD Long Range, I need those sexy buttons to have one configured to do battery preconditioning, as on one of my long distance routes I need to charge at a CCS charger as the new version 3 super charger is not going to be added to next year. But yes the other 2 functions are open charge port and unlock charge port, always fiddling with the app or going into the car top change those to do daily charging. And one more is in the winter with heavy snow or slippery conditions reduce regen will also help greatly.
Because door is open. With frameless doors car needs to lower window to not damage seals, also it will close it after door is closed to increase sealing
Pro tip to keep HVAC/screens on and still keep most of the door closed so insects and dust won't enter the car. And in winter it will still keep the car warm. Very useful if you go in and out quickly and don't remember to put keep climate on.
With Model 3/Y after 2021 the function is activated by a Long Pull of the door handle which also opens the door (and because of this the window is reclined) but with older cars you could do it with a Half Press which normally doesn't do anything but with a Commander installed could make open Frunk or unlock the CP.
The wiper function is the only useful function I see here. Tesla auto wiper function is still not optimal and not having to use the screen to adjust the wiper would be great.
I wonder if the open trunk/frunk and even the open frunk door handle shortcut could be used/hacked by bad intentionned person. I like the idea, not sure I trust adding this device as it's openning a backdoor.

I am on youtube every day and I have never heard of this.
I saw them on DirtyTesla's channel months ago. So, for another review, you could check him out.
I would like to see how it looks when you close things up after you connect the commander unit. Does it stick out of the console?
you could just press the charge port to open it. Is faster than using the door for it.
There is one thing I still miss. That it quick access to the fog lights. But the buttons are to big for my taste. A smaller one to enable/disable fog lights, would be nice.
exactly, I'd by the buttons just for this one, but it looks like it's missing
The button needs to fit the battery. Design is often a compromise, just like your smartphone; most people don't want to carry a brick, so they first had phones that didn't last a full day... Now the phone last a whole day and charge quickly, so they can make the phones thinner or put more in it. Now how much would you like the buttons, if you had to replace batteries every month, if they were a bit smaller? Like Björn said, you want to place them out of sight, like behind the display.
Fog lights are in our roadmap but so far we didn't find a way to turn them On reliably so maybe with future updates.
I know. But you can't unlock charge port by pressing it.
Have you tried the new s3xy snow mode yet on icy roads? It adjusts both regen and the front to rear motor ratio.
this would be useful on the ID. family. For example toggling auto hold
You can stick some of them on the glass roof and play pilot with overhead switches 😁
😂 good one!
How does an OTA update affect your selected presets on the buttons? Do you have to reconfigure?
“Tesla is not interested in giving owners what they want”
that’s bullshit and you know it.
I guess turn signal would be really useful on navigate on AP
Hi Bjorn! I was considering buying these but no. I am looking for a simple way to switch between air recycling and air flowing but this feature seems not to be included. Sad, as in France I have to use this regularly as we have loads of smelly diesels still on the road… And the voice command is so long and boring too…
Agree!! Many smelly vehicles in America as well.
The creators are reading the comments. They might implement this feature since many people have requested it.
@@bjornnyland so we will try it! Thanks!
Yep, we've reached the sad point where you have to buy a DLC for your car to open the glove box...
Does the phone need to stay connected to the commander all the time? Or just to setup the buttons?
Phone doesn't need to be connected.
2:44 ‘Asian sized crowbar’!! 😂🤣
Can you switch battery if you put a button behind the screen?
Can you set acceleration mode (chill/standard) via voice commands?
No, you can't.
LOL. What about 3rd party ambient light? or traffic sign recognition 🤣
Asian size crow bar!! Lol. I love Bjorn and his sense of humour. He knows how to ham it up.
That's a trim removal tool.
It is an actual crow bar made of super strong hitension steel. I use it in carpentry.
Hy biorn, what model and year tesla y will work with these buttons. I see that it only works on tesla y 2019.can you help me witch tesla will work with these buttons
It works for all Model Y
Thanks - couldn’t quite follow you but the buttons look very useful. Appreciate you presentation
14:47 on a iPhone you don't need to wait until the App is loaded and there car connected. you can open the App, press the "open Frunk" Button and confirm. The Frunk will open directly.
I love the idea of it but I also see it as a failure of the manufacturers of not having basic buttons that humans have been using for 100 years.
There are very few humans who have been using them for a hundred years. Some far less.
As far as the charge connector goes, if you have your phone with the app, all you have to do to disconnect is press the button on the charger handle. But pressing the handle button to open the charge port doesn't work unless the car is already awake.
Does it work for precondition the battery?
Why did Tesla removed the regen option?
And this is only software so no warranty issues?
Thanks for the video Bjorn! Is it possible to enable Track mode on a Performance while driving? That would be a great advantage to buy those buttons
Unfortunately not possible, still have to shift to P but at least no need to accept anything on the screen
thanx for the great review! coming from an ioniq i really missed the 0 gen coasting feature! i was excited to see that with this " hack " you can get 0 -regen again!
does it rememmber the setting after a car shut down? and can you set it to 0 gen, and then unplug the commander and dont use the buttons anymore,? and still have 0 gen on.
thanx
Unfortunately without the blended braking the Ioniq has you'll be using the mechanicals for everything if you do that. Be careful of brake fade on long hill descents (unless cruise will still hold speed with regen like the Ioniq did).
@@KevinT3141 hmm! good question! imight send the developer this question. Cheers
Buttons are used only for temporary change a setting so if the car goes to sleep or you unplug the Commander the car defaults will be returned.
Cool! Maybe some day cars will be made that have these kind of buttons built in!
I might put one to open the dashboard and maybe one or two other things.
Living in Australia the shipping will probably cost more than the buttons (haven’t checked prices yet).
Last time I ordered off abstract ocean it cost me $43 USD or about $60 AUD for some console wraps.
We have a dealer for the Asian region - 12buy.sg/. The shipping to Australia will be around USD$16 so you could go ahead and order from them.
I like them for shortcuts and to make some feature easier like you mentioned the frunk and glovebox.
Wow !!!! Fantastic gadgets, for more functions.
3:27 - Will all of that sheeeeet fit in there??
BUT, the functionality I want is to raise the suspension on Model S. Does the documentation say anything about doing that?
when they add 'traction control OFF', i'll buy immediately
I’m pretty sure the car would be undrivable if the traction control was completely off
Since the shortcuts were added I find it very easy to open the bonnet (frunk) as opening the app takes too long to be convenient.
@@sr20trx Yes, however there's also step two: AC shut down. :/ That's why I want this 'Dead quiet' buttom. :D
A motorway test here would maybe not yield any difference as there is less coasting and rolling opportunities(?)
Thoughts anyone?
As someone with a MB250e and a MY LR. You dont need to drive frugal with the Y. It is so efficient even when having fun or driving around in city traffic
@@mariueg Oh, no doubt the MY is going to be a completely different thing, no worries on that one 😁
But it's fun to see how far you can go with a 2017 250e - current record is 170 km (12C, dry roads ~60 km/h avg. speed) with 12km left on the "guessometer" :D
@@YngveSjo My wife got home with 0km left once, was -15c
I'll stick to the screen. Love minimalism more than buttons.
The fact there is such a product shows that people would much rather have physical buttons for certain features and not have everything controlled through touchscreen.
some
Do you think more people who own a Tesla have installed these custom buttons, or more people have not?
@@TomasJogin I think most people with a Tesla will not even be aware that such a product exists. I personally think the more buttons the merrier, like the Kia e-Niro.
@@mrmuds8624 I think "the more buttons the merrier" types don't buy Teslas.
@@TomasJogin Do you think that after this video, there will be some extra orders on this product? If no, you are right. I personally think yes, there will be. Myself is one giving those extra orders…
I just got my gen 2 buttons and sadly found out the wiper speed controller functions have been taken away for the 0.5 increments in wiper speed. This was the main feature I wanted because I live in a rainy environment. Everyone please reach out to the developers and ask them to enable the incremental wiper speed functions once again. It's in the UI but the wipes only actually move to the 4 speeds and auto. Please help us get this back. Thanks for your support.
Nicely packaged and quality product but just cannot see one possible use for it it in my daily commuting.
I never really touch or adjust anything other than changing radio stations or media which is easy enough as is.
Where do you live where it never rains?
@@fmattiasc Perth Australia.
Driven in rain maybe 4 times since picking car up in November 2021 and 10000kms.
Although auto wipe is not great I wouldn't bother with another button for it.
its still 2022, we still need to push buttons, other wise why we buy the clicky loud keyboards? we not at star trek level yet, even in star trek voyager introduced physical buttons on one of their star ships.
I😂 knew you were 🇫🇮 finish by the way you said "shit"
There is actually a pressure sensor on the charge port door. Next time just press the lower right corner and it will open. No need for other shenanigans. Also if you really want speedy frunk, trunk and climate controls, just get Nikola app for iOs and you can control a lot of stuff from your apple watch. That feature alone is worth the money.
I know. But in order to stop charging, what do you do then?
The charge port feature is useful for unlocking, not really for opening.
No problem. You can close the OBD and even hide it in there.
I wonder if snow mode will still kick in if you set the regen through this app to 100%, will it dim it if snow is detected on the asphalt?
I never understood the need to change regen, the accelerator already does that. Just lift your foot less when stopping.
It might depend on the climate where you drive. Here where I live we have various surfaces in the winter months. Sun and dry road, but around a corner there is slushy ice... Quick press on a button to disable regen while passing the slushy icy hill might save the day.
And I'm glad you explained the regen
Can you configure button for set certain cruise control speed?
With the update from this week we added option to turn on the CC and AP. Currently you can't change CC speed but we plan to do it in the future.
@@EnhanceAuto-S3XY_Gadgets I would vote for that very much. I usually go with AP on speed limits, so would use the buttons to set the speed directly to 50, 70, 80 or 130 km/h.
Tenk så mange amerikanere og andre utlendinger som har blitt intimt kjent med aksen Alna senter - Robsrudkrysset gjennom disse videoene.
Why does it open window (just a smidge) on 15:17 ?
@@darekmistrz4364 Thanks!
If you deactivate regen completely, will the car still regen when you use the brake?
No
Interesting the app gives you nice info in real time as well. You could mount a spare phone in landscape mode behind the wheel as a small dashboard?
OMG I really need some for the window wiper speeds.
Pro tip: Push washer button once on the stalk and then you get quick settings on screen.
@@bjornnyland Poenget er å kunne styre det fra pendelen, ikke skjermen...

Double penetration? I see what you did there, Bjorn. 555
Are there any problems with the warranty installing them?
The wiper function is the only useful function I see here. Tesla auto wiper function is still not optimal and not having to use the screen to adjust the wiper would be great.
I like it. Good quick access.
I wonder if the open trunk/frunk and even the open frunk door handle shortcut could be used/hacked by bad intentionned person. I like the idea, not sure I trust adding this device as it's openning a backdoor.
Need testing to ensure it only works with unlocked car.
Would be interesting to see if it works with Millennium Falcon...@
They are a nice hack. What about the LED bar? a button for the LED bar yeahh
1:01 "Recline" = Reject / Decline
Is that another Björn word that I need to get used to?
I meant to say "decline".
