It's in color...
[gets out of chair and curls up into a ball]
.............[whispers] its in color
This comment just have me liFe
It's supposed to be grey.. ;-;
It is actually grey. But it becomes more colorful as Jonas learns
Well we aren't seeing the movie in their POV are we?
[whispers] Their world is color. They just don't know what color is.
aren't they supposed to be TWELVE?
I asked that too...
They're supposed to be Eleven. I believe that they made them older so that parents wouldn't react badly towards the age at which Jonas is learning everything.
no twelve actually
I know, right??
carolyn popovichenko 9 to get the bikes 12 to get new nametags
It's been a while since I've read the book The Giver but I don't remember it being an action movie...
Xavier Fincher this is very true from this trialer it doesnt seem like the book
Yeah it’s nothing like the book the main character is supposed to be 12
Same
Me neither
@@Roe-man same, I thought that too, Jonas was supposed to be 12
"The Giver" Is a man who gives memories of how human life used to take place. The memories are passed down in order to keep them alive while the rest of humanity lives in small communities with everything regulated and controlled to ensure fairness and happiness. Nobody can see color, nor feel strong emotions. Jobs are given based on performance in distinct areas of school, Birth is given by selected individuals and death is not known to anyone. Old people and sick people are "sent off" nobody knows they are being killed.
Now this movie probably makes it look like the Giver isnt supposed to be giving his memories to the boy, but thats exactly what the community wants. The only opposition is when the boy makes a decision to leave the community. He makes that choice after learning about death (from what I remember, correct me if Im wrong)
This movie will probably add a whole bunch of action and explosions when in reality its a quiet book for the most part.
You missed one small detail but the rest was an awesome explanation, the people need the giver to pass down memories and have someone to keep them because when the giver leaves or dies the bad memories and good ones are shown to everybody in the community, and seeing hard things like war destroys the façade that the world is perfect!
"Old people and sick people are "sent off" nobody knows they are being killed.". Pretty much like what's happening now!
Basically life after another decade of Democrat rule.
My interpretation is that he makes the choice to leave after he learns about LOVE and that the world has more to offer than what his community allows him to experience

Hello 7th grade Literature class.
Billybiscuits13 How did you know?
How??
Billybiscuits13 how did you know?😂
How did you know skskkskskks
How did you know?
Wait what? Why are there people kissing in this movie? And why did Jonas get sucked up into an aircraft with Baby Gabe? What's he doing in the desert anyway? Where's his bike that he uses to runaway from? Didn't he runaway close to winter time?
But all in all I'm still gonna see it, Brenton Thwaites is in it!
Just saw the second preview! Answers some of my questions but not all of them. It makes me feel a little better that they're sticking somewhat to the story.
I dont like it it does take but some of the most important parts are taken away! And sometimes that can confuse more than one person!
Actually, another one if my questions is why they had an injection daily? They didnt have that.
+Adore Bieber just watch the movie don't judge it right off the bat!
+Tania Vargas it meant to be the pills they took in the book
Spoilers: To the people complaining about why this isnt in black and white, we arent watching the movie through the eyes of any of the characters, so we still see color. Im sure they'll have scenes where the camera cuts to a black and white shot and you see the world through Jonas' eyes for a moment while Jonas is learning to see color
In the being of Jonas training he could only see flashes not color the whole time
Why don't
they have tunics? And why are they're clothes different colors if they only see white
and if you want black and white just watch the classic "logans run". not exactly the same but many similarities.
@@davidauguste6878 year?
@@indominusjax9211probably because the people making them couldn’t see either
This movie is insanely good. It is not the exact same as the book, but in a way the movie had to be different in order to help you see and feels things from a screen instead of a page.
This movie should have start out black and white and then gradually move into colour. I really hope this is not just another case of "post apocalyptic world" romance movie.
***** color blind doesnt mean you cant see color, it means you mix them up so you may see blue when its green for example
That's a great idea! I really hope this doesn't get screwed up. Part of the idea of the "perfect society" is portrayed by the absence of color.
I saw the movie a few days ago. They do start out in black and white, and then move into color. I just think there were some scenes in color that a should've been I black and white.
Tyler Khaos Actually, no. Color blind means you can only see black and white. Color DEFICIENCY (which I have) is when you are unable to see certain colors. What you described (although it may exist) has nothing to do with color blindness.
Solid Structure I already watched the movie, it does start out in black and white.
1- Johna is too old
2- this shouldnt be a sci-fi/action flick
3-colors
4-the world is nothing like in the book
Thank you good bye
Félix Bergeron Johna who is johna
thats what i was like
Its jonas
The colors is the best part of this movie tbh. How it begins in black and white and the world becomes slowly colorful.
I agree.
This will be life on earth 2030. This is what the World Economic Forum is preaching to us.
i can tell the movie is going to be shit compared to the book.
Now now, the movie isn't even out yet. Lets not jump into conclusions.
i know, but wouldn't you think they'd have the movie in black n white? or hmm.. i don't know.. maybe the kids 12? i'm just trying to keep an open mind but it's hard :')
MattParra15 Have you ever read the book?
sad alien Sigh... They have revealed that Jonas is 16.. (RAAAGGGGGEEEE) I read the books (My mom read all four but I haven't had time to finish the second..) and I really enjoyed them for the creepy ness (With putting down a set of twins, making 12 year olds be "Birth mothers" ect..) but it looks like they will DEFIANTLY be removing the twin that got put down.. I will probably just go see it because I want to see how much of a hot mess it turns out to be. And, the thing with Jonas and Gabe getting caught by the space craft? isufthiseudfgcjfnhduh NO that is NOT what happens in the book... :(
Badelves What are the 2nd third and fourth books!? I must know~
What makes me mad is that this was written before the young adult genre was "cool". This ends up looks like a rip off of Hunger Games and Divergent, even though it this was written in the 90s. I feel like this is going to get lost in the mix, and people will roll their eyes at yet another "dystopian teen book turned movie".
I read this back when I was in middle school and I'm a senior in high school now. I loved it, and I was so excited that there was going to be a movie finally made. I'm not getting my hopes too high, because like a lot of other people, I'm questioning why the film isn't in black and white, at least before Jonas started seeing color.
Young Adult is not a genre. The Hunger Games and Divergent both sucked.
Atticus Glen it is a sub genre. It's a small part of the 'fiction' genre
*Genre*
Young Adult Literature has become a genre which covers various types of text including: novels, graphic novels, short stories, and poetry. Much of the literature published consists of young adult fiction which in itself contains several different types of text. The genre also contains other various types of non-fiction such as biographies, autobiographies, journal entries/diaries, and letters. Although many genres exist in young adult literature, the problem novel tends to be the most popular among young readers. Problem novel refers to young adult novels in the realistic-fiction category that "addresses personal and social issues across socioeconomic boundaries and within both traditional and nontraditional family structures" (Cole 98). Memoirs are also popular forms of Young Adult Literature. Another common genre within young adult fiction is Bildungsroman, a coming of age story that showcases the process of "growing up". The genre itself has been challenged due to its seemingly mature content by critics of Young Adult Literature, but "other converted critics have embraced Young Adult so dearly that they have scoured the canon for any classics they could adopt into the YA family" (Stephens 2007).
0:44 you see a split second of Taylor Swift with brown hair
Oh my goodness, yes! I see it! I just posted something wlike "Was Tay even in this at all?" and then Ive just seen hthis and ahhh baby I ove you
Yeah she is Rosemary
Hmm... wonder how true to the book this is going to be.
A story that I actually enjoyed in 6th grade
same
This film reminds me of a quote by Arthur Schopenhauer: "Life Without Pain Has No Meaning"
When I'd heard they were making this book into a movie, I got very excited. Sadly, this trailer strongly suggests they will gut anything poignant from the story in lieu of needlessly injected drama and action. A pity, a true adaptation might have been amazing.
I sincerely hope you're wrong... :-(
The Giver is one of my favorite books I've read in grade school. Hopefully the movie will live up to the greatness of the book.
Well I can see the movie suffers from Percy Jackson syndrome.
Omg Ikr !!!!!😂😂😂
true
Lol Yes!
haha ikr they're supposed to be around 12
So many things wrong with this trailer because it deviates so far from the book.
1) Everyone in the community can only see black and white. Everyone is pretty much color blind because of some advanced technology the dictatorship government has. Only the Giver can see colors.
2) That last seen in the trailer never happened. And on top of that the part of the book it is based on was in a wooded area during the winter with snow everywhere.
Just so many important factors that I can't list (for spoiler reasons) are wrong in this trailer... I don't think this movie will be very good, as a fan of the book
The book never said the people were color blind..... The Giver talks about the "Sameness" thingy. It's not that they can't see colors, there is NO color for them to see. The scientists just toned all the colors until it became the same boring hue.
That is the SAME as color blind. I never said they were naturally color blind, but even if it's artificial, they can't see colors because of the advanced technology and, hence, they are COLOR BLIND lmao
DeadlyReconGamer I just finished the book and have not watched the movie yet and I agree
I read this book when i was in third grade, i am now a freshman in college… Kids this book is good
One of my favorite childhood novels has been adapted into film.
Not too sure how I feel about the trailer at first watch, but I'm still excited!
I remember this book from school. Dude couldn't figure out wtf was changing with an apple, and we didn't find out until later that he was seeing red for the first time. He was also allowed to go wherever he wanted, whenever, because it was his job to know. This book caused a childhood of fantasies of getting a unique job that paid me just to go wherever I wanted, whenever. The only condition being I could not spread the knowledge I learn, and I could not steal. If I wanted to go to fort Knox, I could walk through the doors. Would be an amazing job to be a keeper of knowledge.

I hate how everyone hates the movie just because its not identical to the book. I loved both
All these dystopias with youth actors are starting to look the same :P
this is based on a book written in the 90s
Thomas Morris I remember reading this book in school.
Thomas Morris to bad it looks literally nothing like the book.
Yea that's what I was thinking I don't remember spaceships and the Giver's beard was longer.
Terry Collins they had jets…. but i think this film is taking everything to the extreme
hello 8th grade English class my class just read the book and we now are watching
What? The boy (whose name I forget at this moment, please forgive me. I have ADD so remembering and forgeting is not a choice for me) is supposed to be much younger than the movie is portraying him.
Jonas, he's supposed to be 12, but you know what surprised me the most? his parents look so young, not how I pictured them when I was reading the book. Looks good, tho.
I couldn't agree more. He's 12 or 13 (13 I think) and in the movie he looks 16. Attractive, but a little to old for Jonas.
the actor who plays Jonas is in his 20's as well.
+Angie Lastrella Laban hes 12
To those who are looking for taylor swift, she's actually in 0:44. It's really fast so that's why it's really hard to catch a glimpse of her :)
This is basically the life we live in now.
reading the book in school and only look forward to watching this because Jeff Bridges is in it.
If they f*** this movie up...
I'll be so pissed. I hope that it starts out in black and white but it doesn't look like it's going to happen.
Ryan Leonard I was thinking the same thing...
@@ryanleonard6401 It does.
My class literally just watched this vid today.
Any one watching this because u read it on school?
Remember reading and watching this in grade 8. Honestly really good
Did he just get abducted by aliens? I must have skipped that page.
no he got lifted up just whatch the movie
+adrianna park Correction: Read the book, no one gets lifted
Last time i checked, fiona didnt give a crap about Jonas and they never talked about “skipping morning injections” they were just some kind of ‘friend’
If you like this movie you will like “Equilibrium” 2002 with Christian Bale, similar idea. Really highlighting their plans for the future.
There are quite few of this kind. “What happened to Monday” with Noomo Rapace is more recent one that comes to mind.Yes indeed predictive programming.
Thank ypu for recommend.I recommend İn time movie is similar giver.
why does the giver not have a huge beard?
Jonas was also supposed to be in a small room and be naked and the giver was supposed to touch his back, and Jonas was supposed to be 12 not 20. This movie is nothing like the book and it makes me angry 😹😹
Yeah when I read the book that is exactly how I imagined it now I am looking at this and I am so confused
Not excited for this. AT ALL. Literally, are they not twelve in the book, with no color, and no futuristic SPACE SHIPS?
Actually they do mention in the books that they had "futuristic"ships, but the only thing about them was that they had thermal vision or something.
Mike Montijo it wasn't futuristic, they were jets/airplanes. fighter jets have thermal... they weren't what they are trying to portray in this monstrosity of a movie.
there is no color, i saw the movie but as it progresses theres color
I would have wanted it to be in all black and white, because in the book they didn't see colors. But when Jonas started seeing colors, that we could star seeing them on the movie. The movie looks great and I can't wait to see it.
IMO, they never should have made this into a movie. on a personal note, i never envisioned this as being sci-fi. besides, SPOILER ALERT (i guess) there is no color in this world so there's a huge experience that's nonexistent. i don't know. i remember i read this twice and specifically thought that this would be one that couldn't be a movie and if it was, the experience just wouldn't be replicated. also, why isn't jeff bridges beard longer! lol
i remember this going on a field trip in 5th grade after reading the whole book popcorn method in class 😂😂😂
YAY! I AM SO HAPPY THEY FINALLY MADE THIS. I WAS TALKING TO MY TEACHER ABOUT IT IRONICALLY AND THEY DID! I AM SOOOOOOOOO HAPPY!
Look the movie doesn't have to be EXACTLY like the book. The movie is an INTERPRETATION of the book. I believe this movie will be awesome in it's own rights.
Oh my god, this looks amazing! I'm so excited, especially since we finally have movie that doesn't include too many well-known actors/actoresses (not saying that's a bad thing cause Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep are brilliant) but there needs to be fresh blood I think! Can't wait!
I remember reading this book in elementary school with our teacher and just by watching this trailer I'm having a hard time remembering what it was about
SO why is the title of this video Jeff Bridges, Taylor Swift and not Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep?
Caus taylor is in it she's in o.e of the visions
not me getting a trailer as an ad for the video HELP
Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep in the same movie? Must be dreaming. That being said I've nearly finished reading "A brave new world" and there are several similarities, I mean that in a good way and I'm eager to watch it.
*****
You're gonna laugh but I bought the two books the exact same day, and I'm will start reading it as soon as I'm over with A Brave New World. I'm in my "dystopian novels phase".
*****
Thanks for the last two books as well mate. I didn't knew that Children of Men was based on a novel. I'm always willing to improve my book collection.
A good example of a trailer being better then the actual movie
Was Taylor even in this trailer at all?
Considering that she will be playing the role of a fairly insignificant character, they only gave her a split-second appearance amongst all the flashing scenes in the mid-beginning.
Alexis Dagohoy I didn't realise it was only a minor role :(
she's playing the giver's daughter, Rosemary. Maybe you could call it a little more important than minor
she was there for a split second 0:44
Who is here in 2018 4 years later just learning about the book in 7th grade
Yes yes yes! I've always wanted one of the books to be made into movies!
1 There is no color
2 They are twelve
3 Not everything was all space themed O-O
This look absolutely amazing! I need to re-read the book!
You say that on EVERY trailer. xD
I do? I don't remember watching every trailer...I don't remember commenting on EVERY trailer.
Brooke Reimer
Even if you had, that's kinda weird that Bryan was looking for all of your comments :/
Richard Partrestal I know lol I have no idea who he is.
I was watching some trailers, like The Maze Runner. Kinda caught my eyes cuz i read it awhile back. Then I realized this book had a trailer, and took a look at it
They've already admitted in an article earlier this year they didn't try to make it exactly like the book in order to try to stop a backlash when it releases.
I imagined the world to be black and white. Why isn't it black and white?
Meant to say, Hollywood never misses the opportunity to destroy something of quality and vision through cheap immitation!
LAME! Why is there colour? They have already messed up!
The movie starts in black and white.
Problems
-Not black and white
-No tunics
-There seemed to be some joy
- Whatever the hell that spaceship was
-The tone is not uncomfortable
I would go on but I would be here for hours
This looks too much like Divergent. I don't think they are going to stick to the book very well on this one, just sayin'.
I came here because I’m waiting to watch the movie in ELA and I wanted to see the trailer
I keep seeing comments that are like, "No color! Blahhhh!" or, "It's nothing like the movie! Why is it Sci-fi?"
For the Color thing, (somebody already said this, thanks to them. 🙂) We aren't actually looking out of the perspective of a character, most likely. As for it being kinda Sci-Fi, it is set in the future, like the book. I mean like, I think from the book it could be easy to tell it's in the future, by how there's new sets of ways people live life, and how new things have been invented.
Eh, I'm done. Just kinda bugged of how many comments there are about the dang color and Sci-fi. Anyways,
cya in 2019, years almost ended, huh?
At 0:26 I don’t know if anyone else noticed but the little girl is Ruby from the CW show Supergirl
wow definitely remember reading this yep I remember when Jonas became 18 and everything became an action thriller.
They did the book so dirty with this one.
Taylor Swift movie? I really hope not.
Agreed.

This would've been such a great oppertunity to an awesome film in black and white, why they didn't take it, I dunno.
0:45 I saw Taylor Swift
At first I thought this was boring that I watched it anyway and then I got hooked on it and actually it had a great script and a great ending in a great meeting and I appreciated it so thanks to the Riders the actors and the director and producers great movie
I read the book back in 6th grade.
I'm gonna read the book soon, right after I'm done with The Maze Runner. This looks decent enough.
Oh wow finally, I'm glad to see people who aren't hating on this movie just because it's not very much like the book. You should see the other videos of this trailer and their comment sections…they're just riddled with stupid trolls who judge before they think. Also, a lot of people don't know that The Giver is a series, not an individual book. There are three other books in the series: Gathering Blue, Messenger, and Son.
Oh, and by the way, the first half of the movie actually is in black and white. They just made this trailer all in color so that people who haven't read the book wouldn't be more confused than they seem to be here.
I hate people that oversimplify descriptions like this but I can't help it... Equilibrium without the action?
We are watching it in class right now
Wait... The Giver was a Sci-Fi!?
uh... duh?
i was thinking the same thing, i read it in school, but never thought of it like this.
NerdyDays Exactly! I imagined the setting was like a small town that was like a time capsule of 50s era. Everyone has their place, the milkman delivers, the cleansing crew picks up dirty dishes from door steps (i forgot the name). I knew there was some advance tech but they only mentioned heat sensors used by aircrafts. That's why I'm shocked. I only figured this was The Giver because the lines sounded really familiar.
Also I though the main character was suppose to be 12??
Nice movie. Very beautiful 😊
Wait, isnt he supposed to be like, twelve?
Chloe zheng He is supposed to be 12, but it looks like they couldn't find anyone who's 12 years old to play him.
Dylan Bourassa
good point.
Chloe zheng Indeed.
+Dylan Bourassa they could have chose a 13 year old
He's not suppost to be 12 he is a twelve but that doesn't mean that's there age that's just what they call them plus the movies different from the book
I don’t care, I love this movie❤️
for people that haven't read the book (like myself) this trailer was way too confusing
Well, (Spoilers)
The country they live in is called Sameness. Everything is the same. Everybody had a job, had a bike, had a family, had 2 children, and EVERYTHING was equal. And at the Ceremony of the 12, (Which happens at December, (which is everybody's 'official' birthday) ) The Twelves receives their future job, and gets trained for it. Jonas was chosen as the receiver. The current Receiver told Jonas to call him The Giver. The baby was, probably, Gabriel, a weak child from the Nurturing Center, where Jonas' Father works. Their father and mother aren't their actual birthparents.
Gray Fullbuster Would have been better if the movie was in grey, rather than colour.
Gray Fullbuster almost sounds like Divergent with a twist ...
Angel Williams except this book came before divergent
Angel Williams Divergent is like a combination of The Giver and The Hunger Games. They live in an orderly, futuristic community and are "assigned" to one of five factions, and the one girl is singled out as a Divergent (kinda like The Giver). She goes through many action-packed ordeals, while discovering that some people are out to kill the Divergents, and she has to stage a rebellion to fight back (kinda like The Hunger Games, well, the second and third one at least). I actually haven't read or watched Divergent, but I looked up a summary.
yes this movie isn't the same thing as the book to the T. but it's still a good interpretation of it! interesting spin while still keeping with the heart of the original! the giver is my all time favorite book in the world
I love The Giver and, holy crap -- Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep?! Brilliant casting. But I have a serious problem...
Why is there color?! If we are seeing the world from Jonas' perspective, why are we -- the audience -- privy to things Jonas cannot even perceive? Or is color not an issue in the movie? And if that's true, then one of the most important moments in the book is missing from the movie. Hell, many important concepts will be missing. What a shame...
Seriously, I haven't read the book in over a decade and I still remember "that moment" VIVIDLY. So sad... maybe they were just afraid of being compared to Pleasantville, which borrows many concepts from The Giver pretty much wholesale.
I agree with you on the impact of the "moment", but the problem is how do you show that in a movie? If the movie is in black and white, then the little bits if color he starts seeing early on will give away the surprise. Either you need to change the attribute that has been removed, go at the story a bit differently, or keep the audience in the dark about the fact that everyone is colorblind.
Not sure what would be better or which way the movie is going, but I'm still excited to find out.
Luke Grissom Well if the script as any good the film will take place from Jonas' perspective, meaning we're only privy to information Jonas knows/sees.
I'm really hoping only the trailer is color 'cause The Giver is really good young-adult fiction that introduced me to what great science fiction has to offer and I just don't want to see it dumbed down simply to get asses into seats.
Damn saw this movie in 7th grade…I really enjoyed the book and the movie as well
SOOO excited! Hopefully they do it justice
Man I was so hyped for this movie I'm hoping it's only in color bcuz this is all after he becomes able to see color. But love that Jeff bridges is the giver couldn't of picked someone better
OMG OMG OMG. ITS FINALLY GONNA BE HERE. MY FAVORITE BOOK SINCE I WAS IN MIDDLE SCHOOL AHHHHH
same i loved this book, and has been my favorite one, i hope they dont change to much of the book :c
Finally a movie on the book, been waiting since middle school
They already screwed up so bad! The movie is suppose to have no color whatsoever. The book is from the new givers perspective and he regains the ability to see color over time. LIKE THE SEEN WITH THE APPLE WHERE HE SEE THE COLOR RED FOR THE FIRST TIME!!!! That was a huge part of of the book and with the movie being completely in color they already fucked that up and it basically won't be included due to that fact :'/
0:18 "Unfortunately some people did not become harmonious, we call the Divergents."
Why am I reading the book in 5th grade 2021? I DONT UNDERSTAND THE BOOK!!!
I read the book in fricking 5th grade and now I'm in 9th grade! I remember loving the book but don't remember a thing about it! I should reread it...
No!!! They are going to ruin this book to movie adaptation! What in the world?! They're supposed to be colorblind. Jonas is supposed to lay down. Jonas never talks to Fiona about what is going on she doesn't ever say that people have stuff stolen from their lives. What is up with the ending that's not in the book either!!! So frustrated right now....
the giver like..the book we all had to read in school? lol
