You misunderstood the ending. In the end, she gave up and adopted "alternative math" to have more money. This is what most of the scientific world has been doing for years which will support any nonsense for money.
You are comparing apples with oranges in many cases. If you are talking about maths, yes, there are some immutable laws. However, if you are talking about all these so-called "experts" predicting economic meltdown in the event of a vote for Brexit back in 2016 who were making these wild predictions based on possible business and psychological responses to the different legislative environment as if they were immutable laws, well come on, surely you must understand why we are mistrusting the "expert class"? If one is an "expert", one should be careful to clarify the limits of what one is able to accurately predict with substantially more accuracy than a layman, even with expertise in the subject. If you can't predict outcomes any more accurately than a layman, don't go round saying, "I'm an expert, dontchya know?!" to back up predictions that are just wild speculation.

This happened to me. Standing in a 7th grade classroom cutting out construction paper letters for a bulletin board, I told student a student that I was ready to call his parents because he constantly interrupted me. I had scissors in my hand when I said this. The next morning, the principal came to my room and asked if I threatened a student with scissors. My shock was immense. I couldn't even remember cutting out the letters because I was so shocked. That afternoon the student's father and mother were ushered into my room by the assistant principal who sat there for a full 2 hours while the man threatened my job, called me vulgar names, I can't even remember. Over and over he screamed at me. I was visibly pregnant. Today, I would stand up, tell the principal to stop it, and if it didn't, I'd quit. It was horrible. I sobbed for hours. My husband made me go back to school the next day telling me if I didn't, he would win. I stayed for the insurance. After my child was born and maternity leave was up, I called them up and quit. Never went back into a classroom. And just so you know, on my evaluation for that year, the assistant principal said I was exemplary and hoped that I would never stop teaching.
Sorry you had such a horrible experience. I was lucky to have far more positive experiences than negative ones in my teaching career, but still happy that I retired early. It's a shame that a situation with one student can discourage a competent teacher from continuing; so many other students lose out when this happens.

I wouldn't matter. They would just say they don't interpret, or see it that way. They will always frame everything in a way where they win and she loses. Once you start this game, and you can make things mean what you want, then communication breaks down, and there's no more agreement on what anything means, so you have chaos. Everything becomes "democratic" in the worst possible way. You start voting on what words mean, but you can vote again tomorrow after you made a promise today, so you don't have to keep it. Nothing means anything anymore, and it begins to boil down to brute strength: whoever has the most physical clout wins every debate.
First of all, this is such a great short film. It depicts so extremely and yet accurately modern society. And second of all, if the logic of addition was to put the two number next to each other 2,000 + 2,000 would equal 20,002,000 , so she should have asked for that.

This is because knowledge is no longer valued among Western Society - only "diplomas". You teach kids not to make them wiser, but to make them "adjusted" and "matching" regulations and certifications.
Even the teacher gets the alternative math wrong. If 2 + 2 = 22 by putting the numbers next to each other, than 2000 + 2000 = 20,002,000. She could have gotten a lot more money if she was any good at math!

Nope The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster was published in 2006 so the push for teaching creationism (intelligent design) has been around for quite while.
This is not a fact, this is an abstraction, which is more or less accepted worldwide. But indeed, there are different ways to understand "2+2", and "22" is one of them. Not in school maths, obviously.
There are so many metaphors in this film. Some of which are: People in today’s society are offended too easily. Some things aren’t up to debate despite how much people want to argue. In contrast to the previous point, people are losing their ability to think freely due to the influx of media, phones and distractions etc. The teacher is being treated as an outcast for being different. It plays on the whole “alternative facts” phrase Donald Trump was throwing around. The media can blow things way out of proportion on a whim. A very clever little film.
I guess it depends on how you look at it. I see her as normal...teaching math as math is. But yes, the rest of them are the odd ones, wringing way too much out of one incident with crazy parents.
She had no info that the school accepted that 1000 x 1000 = 1000,1000 or 10,001,000. She only had info that the school accepted that 2 x 2 = 22. So 2000+2000 = 1000(2+2) = 1000(22)= 22,000 given what she knew about what the school accepted.
Of course, the teacher's answer at the end of the film is wrong. 2,000 + 2,000 isn't 22,000, it's 20,002,000. Concatenation is more awesome than addition! Fred
Some years ago I would find this movie funny - but now its rather terrifying, as the world is becoming to look exactly like that. The ending - awesome :D
i think it shows that since the system is already up and running we should learn to play by its rules to get at least some better closure. Don't you think?
under the 2 + 2 = 22 standard, 2000 + 2000 would be be twenty million two thousand. If we need to endure insanity we can't leave money on the table. I identify this comment as profound and hilarious.
It makes me mad because one of my favourite and knowledgeable teachers quit because one of the student's parents harassed him for the student failing, even though the student failed to attend to class, and therefore, it showed in his grades. There's definitely a line that needs to be drawn and I think this short film is excellent at showing that a student's grades shouldn't depend on how aggressive their parents are.
I’m a first grade teacher just like this teacher and I can say without exaggeration that these parents DO exist. Principals DO talk to you like this. You do your job correctly fearing the fact that one offended kid or parent can send you packing is REAL.
Yes, as a former teacher I can attest to this. Of course this is an over-exaggeration, made to be humorous, so it is over the top. But it does, sadly, have some basis in reality. And it is a liberal problem; I have simply never had conservative parents storm in and aggressively demand to know why their student's grades are low.
This is invaluable. They've hit the nail on the head. When one of two numbers is of string type, "2" + 2 turns into "22" due to string concatenation, which is quite amusing 😆. On the other hand, this illustrates the significant impact media can have, potentially wreaking havoc on our lives. It shows that the validity or rationality of the content doesn't always matter

I take it back. I like the teacher's answer better. It confuses math and logic more. If 2 apples + 2 apples is 22 apples the 2 thousand +2 thousand = 22 thousands
Technically, it's 20002000, that's 20 million and 2000. You have to put the two whole numbers together, you can't just ignore the zeroes... Don't people even know basic math anymore???

It was really frustrating for me to match this, it seems really silly. I've been teaching for 3 years and the hardest part of teaching for me was that I always felt like everyone was against me. The students who didn't want to learn, the parents who wanted their child to succeed but didn't want to put any of that responsibility on their child or themselves, and my coworkers who I felt were always judging and critiquing. Watching this teacher receive no support and be attacked from all sides even though she got the last laugh was truly upsetting for me and I'm not sure what to do with that. Hopefully, this comment gets lost at the bottom of the comment section.
I'm sure every teacher can relate. And don't let it upset you too much. There are parents that will see this and it will open their eyes. Hopefully the some students will open theirs as well. It's hard to find teachers that care, and those are the teachers that kids will remember 20 years later, and be thankful.
I’m surprised you didn’t understand the plot of this short. It’s to show how outrageous teachers are being treated. The administrator even said something along the lines of “You teachers think you’re changing the future or something huh” as obvious sarcasm. This short basically tells the story of how teachers were once scolded because they were teaching the subject of evolution when the people at home didn’t want their child to know the truth of evolution and wanted to be open to the idea of the christian faith that god made men and women. Watch the video again and replace math with science and you can see what the filmmaker was trying to represent.
@@Kelvin.Quang. I think he(Piichi) understood the plot just fine. I think he was saying-despite the sarcasm- it reminded him of the dilemmas that he and other teachers face within the school system. And just like the lyrics to a song or poetry, there might be parts that mean different things to different people.
I see the main point in the title, which is a play on the novel idea in our current political world that proven lies are not lies, but “alternative facts.” The piece slams the current atmosphere of anti-intellectualism (“You think you’re an expert, and that I should pay attention to you and your peers, just because you’re all smart and have devoted your lives to this topic?”). There’s also a healthy slam on parents who can’t admit their little Johnny made a mistake, and what teachers have to put up with these days.
Plus the idea that a single person can have his/her life ruined because the masses are against him/her regardless who's right/wrong. Schools, Colleges and Corporations would rather terminate trouble makers rather than face backlash (regardless of the situation).
The ending was beautiful!! but this is exactly where the world is headed if people don't change drastically. FACTS are far more important than feelings and the sooner people realise this the sooner we can actually advance instead of going backwards.
The herd is being led by the nose and being trained to accept anything they are force fed. Those that disagree will be outcast. We have a situation where all of the 600 or so world corporations own a portion of each other's company. They have more leverage than the superpowers. Above them is one or two organizations who want united interest of all world monetary matters, risk prevention and united guarantee that has no national borders. Who would or could challenge them. Only nature can do that if weather patters chage drastically enough to close all the worlds ports.
Exactly. Global warming for example. It’s ridiculous to debate a topic which every reasonable scientist is in agreement on. Same with gender identity. Most social scientists are in agreement that gender and sex are spectrums, and are not wholly binary. The sooner people stop trying to argue with objective fact, the better. But I constantly see conservatives and even liberals arguing against these basic facts.
"The World" more like the West. Religious Majority countries and also traditionalist-minded countries like China, Japan and most parts of Asia, still have a solid foundation of what is right and wrong from religion and tradition. The West is trying so hard to fit in a modern world that their brains are slowly leaking out from being so "open-minded"
@@benwetzel8449 it is objective fact that there are two sexes. You can believe what you want about “gender” but if gender is separate from sex then there’s no reason to mutilate your body, or a child’s body, to be consistent with your, or their “gender”.
Great story but it's sad to think that so many teachers have to deal with parents like that. They aren't doing their kids or the general public any favors.
This movie portrays relativism in a very exaggerated way, but so we can understand how terrible this idea is. Relativism starts with the thought that we can think what we want, we can do what we want, and no one has the authority to say it's wrong. And at the end of the video, you see how relativist ideas contradict each other, and there is no way to live in a world where truth does not exist. If absolute truth does not exist, then that sentence already becomes absolute truth. I am very grateful to the producers of this short, and I would do everything to make the sense of it spread to everyone. I'm sorry if any part of this text doesn't make any sense, I'm using Google Translate.
Would be much less punchy. The thousands are just being regrouped as units, in the same way 2 markers plus 2 markers were 22 markers... 2 thousand plus 2 thousand was 22 thousand.
Yeah. We noticed that also. The filmmakers apparently have a problem with new math. Maybe they should go back to school for a while. Enjoyed the film but they messed up the punch line a bit. :)
Many people are saying the same thing, you should read previous comments. For instance, mine, when I said that if folloing that "logic", if two pencils plus two pencils equals 22 pencils, then why two thousand plus two thousand couldn't equal 22 thousand?
That's another way to go, but again... If 2x + 2x = 22x, like in 2 pencils + 2 pencils = 22 pencils, I don't understand why is it so difficult to accept the conclusion that 2 thousand + 2 thousand = 22 thousand
Well you are doing it by the words then... but i dont think if you are speaking with your voice you image the number as 2 thousand but more like 2000... But y - if you write it down like that 2 thousand + 2 thousand indeed equals 22 thousand
The thing is, while the idea of actually debating 2 + 2 seems ridiculous, this is actually a thing teachers have to deal with on a regular basis. From parents who feel like their children are unfairly being criticized to administration that would rather maintain a public perception.
Honestly, this is a work of art. Not just the actual piece, but also the meta-level that it essentially parodies the reactions people have to the video and showcases confirmation bias in it's most brutal form. That is, assuming you actually intended that effect when you made this six years ago XD
I honestly didn't know what kind of reaction it would get six years ago. I didn't even know if anyone would watch it. But it's been fun to see how the Comments Section mirrors exactly what the film is satirizing.
Trump’s team popularized the term “alternative facts”. The title is “Alternative math”. This video is obviously a reference to Trumps first running, and since then, this hasn’t stopped.

I got the impression that this short film was attempting to inform us on a subject unrelated to the mathematical issue at hand. But I'm confident that the general audience saw it in their own typical way. It dealt with people's ignorance and unwillingness to question what they had been taught and delve into the truth, which nearly always turns into an abstract idea for people because of their inability to see past the obvious and recognise the subtle signs of reality. The teacher in the film hails from a time when manipulation was less common, and because of her own long years of education and exposure to the real world, she has unfiltered insight to share. The parents of the child standing up for their son struck me as a reflection of reality, considering that these parents' knowledge is distorted, to begin with. They haven't learned from their past mistakes. Even when children don't pay attention to their parents, they do imitate them. The child responded to the teacher in this manner for that reason. The kid developed sensitivity for things other than what is generally accepted to be right. The kid refuses to believe when the teacher says "everybody makes mistakes." She provides him with convincing examples, but the little boy is unable to understand what she is attempting to convey since he also believes that the reality is what the "majority" says it is. When the teacher meets the child's parents, they make fun of her and label her as narcissistic in the most famous way just because of her sincere efforts to instruct the child in the proper way. The parents are so delusional; they don't believe in the absolute truth either, but they nevertheless regard themselves and their child as free thinkers. I perceived the principal of the school as one of the perpetrators trying to exploit developing children in his own line of business. A few moments before the last scene, when the principal distributes money to satisfy an obligation, he does so in the proper quantity and according to the correct calculations because he is aware of the truth, but he doesn't want everyone to be aware of genuine information and knowledge. And in the end, the teacher gives another blatantly incorrect mathematical answer when the principal takes out the right monetary amount. There, she is essentially making fun of the system, the administrators in charge of it, and the people who collectively and mindlessly believe everything these officials say.
Yeah, there's two layers : - First, the obvious alternative facts, anti-intellectualist crowd (US far right) First-and-a-half, *that crowd* is persuaded to be the intellectual by maintaining an openminded/debate charade, when they actually have no idea of common sense methods to derive a truth. Like a children's game running on non sensical rules like "my cape grants me ability to kill an opponent with a ring of invulnerability" For them, everything is in a perpetual debate. The debate IS the point of the debate, and not to find knowledge at the end of the debate. They give the impression of being like Newton, people always questionning their world... but unable to find anything because guess what, intellectuals already found the correct answers so you either have to copy or get the wrong ones. - Second, the school doesn't care as long both sides are happy The intellectual crowd get knowledge, great! The antiintellectual crowd gets to a method split : The teacher wants to spread knowledge even to people who don't want it (the child who copied his parents, then the parents). They get aggressive because by trying to teach, the teacher hurt their feelings that knowledge is not important as long they can live in a society accomodating their inabilities. The administation simply wants to cather to the crowd, lying to them that 2 and 2 are 22, then give them 4,000$ while claiming it's 20,000$. That works fine as long stupid people stay stupid, but breaks specularily as long one person rediscover the scientific method and other common sense reasonings, like the teacher does at the end by forcing the admin to stick to one interpetation on the news. At no point the school prretends that 2+2 is not 4. Their issue is that the teacher REFUSES to acknowledge anti-intellectualism is a thing. Modern viewpoints consider it some human issue that can't be fixed, as the Internet showed. The teacher, ironically, refuses to change her viewpoint and, until the end, still consider that everybody should have knowledge even AGAINST THEIR WILL. And the short's ending is ambiguous is she should be considered right to try to help everybody, or is she is an old rusty mind that should change her ways when the entire table started playing a different game. [EDIT] And even that it's shown in subtle ways : when a superior tells "you take all children, divide by 0, that's the respect", she answers in math terms instead of countering the fact that HER SUPERIOR just accusated her of not respecting the children! As we say, *logic can't fight feelings* and she is unable to comprehend that maths has nothing to do with the discussion.
About the principal, I think he's actually an at least partially reasonable man, but he is just too scared of the school losing reputation to stand up against the parents.

Thank you for telling your story.
I'm sorry that happened to you. That's terrible. We need to treat each other, and especially our teachers, with more respect.
Sorry you had such a horrible experience. I was lucky to have far more positive experiences than negative ones in my teaching career, but still happy that I retired early. Yeah...
That math teacher pulled a fat uno reverse card on the principal in the end.
It also feels like a play on the 'new math' that they started back around 2010....
And the worst part is the right-wingers in the comments are just projecting it onto the intellectuals
Alternative math in action (from a programmer):
If 2 + 2 = 22 (string concatenation),

Wouldn't the final pay cheque have been $20,002,000?
She took a pay cut
She chose a number that she knew they'd realistically be able to pay
the teacher is still wrong at last. It's $20002000
great math skill man (y)
ikr!
I just came here to say that...
thats just your math opinion. stop shoving your view down my throat.
Great! But the last line is WRONG. Since their addition operator concatenates numbers, it should be "It's 20,002,000 dollars".
Would be much less punchy. The thousands are just being regrouped as units, in the same way 2 markers plus 2 markers were 22 markers... 2 thousand plus 2 thousand was 22 thousand.
$20,002,000 not $22,000.Duh...
YOU'RE RIGHT!
Or $222,222,222.
We should respect every answer huh?
After what happens, she still wrong😂😂
Doesn't matter. The point was that math was up for debate. And 2+2=22 could be times 2 by 10 and add the other two on.
WOW YOU'RE SO SMART WOW
With the logic they show with 2+2 being 22, 2000+2000 should be $20002000. Just saying.
Y they messed up - the did 2*2000 and that is = 22000...
"22" would be the correct answer if the question had used string types of "2" + "2".
programmer FTW
$2000 + $2000 = $20 002 000 by their own stupid rules... She did herself out of an awful lot of money.
But everyone would get more money thus inflation would need to adject thus thatd be the average teacher salary
true, though I guess the average viewer might not have figured that out fast enough, so the effect on the viewership would not have been as consistant
Well.. actually $2000 + $2000 = $20 002 000
Oh my god I thought this was recent. This was seven years ago! Time goes by so fast when alternative realities exist for almost a decade.
This aged VERY well
Trump’s team popularized the term “alternative facts”. The title is “Alternative math”. This video is obviously a reference to Trumps first running, and since then, this hasn’t stopped.
"There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.”
Issac Asimov
And knowledge would be defined as the status quo. Don't rock the boat. These professional experts over here, who are paid very well to resolve the APPROPRIATE answers, have determined what course we are going to follow (what benefits corporate interests) and anyone who questions it will be considered suspect.
@@SteveSmekar-ll6ln That's not what Asimov was referring to. Look up Dunning Kruger effect, that may answer a few questions for you.
Yall need to stop quoting random quotes
@@succusage3966 I wouldn't call that quote random though.
I'm a retired elementary school art teacher. The part about the math is funny, but the part with the administration speaking nonsense is accurate. I had an brand new assistant principal give me a poor evaluation because I was not teaching the standards and I wasn't using enough "mediums." She used that word multiple times. Ironically, the word "mediums" never appears in the standards. "Media" is the term for art materials; "mediums" are people who claim to have extrasensory powers to divine things the rest of us can't. Now that I think about it, I wished I had consulted a medium before that administrator arrived.
I didn't think this was far off the mark...school admin and the superintendents were quite realistically portrayed
@@juanitadoe4057 No, the plural is usually media. Singular is medium. The point is that she was saying I wasn't following the standards, when in reality she wasn't using the standards correctly to accuse me. As I said in my post, the term "mediums" appears nowhere in the standards. Media is the correct term.
@@absolutezippo7542
Medium is singular in art. Media is plural. Mediums refers to something else.
You didn't read my original comment. She stated in an evaluation that I was not following the standards because I was not using "mediums." That word is not in the standards. It's illogical to say that someone is not following the standards because they are not doing something that is not in the standards.
$2,000 + $2,000 should actually equal $20,002,000. Let that be a lesson.
22000 is also correct ^^
2000 + 2000 = 1000*(2+2) = 1000*22 = 22000.
It is just that the maths there are screwed up
Brilliant in all respects (writing, acting, cinematography, etc.) but also as a commentary on living in a post-truth world.
Who else had this in their recommended just out of the blue? I notice a lot of the comments are from within a day, yet this video is a few months old.
David McDermott that's true wtf is happening
This is such a precise picture of society today, it’s pathetic
No, not 22,000. The correct amount would be: $20,002,000
"God hates Facts" sign at the protest is brilliant :)
Absolutely Wrong! It is 20,002,000 dollar!
Wrong, should've said 2000 + 2000 = 20002000
The kid refuses to believe when the teacher says "everybody makes mistakes."
She provides him with convincing examples, but the little boy is unable to understand what she is attempting to convey since he also believes that the reality is what the "majority" says it is.
The subject is making fun of Trump's 'Alternative facts'
Yeah, there's two layers :
- First, the obvious alternative facts, anti-intellectualist crowd (US far right)
First-and-a-half, *that crowd* is persuaded to be the intellectual by maintaining an openminded/debate charade, when they actually have no idea of common sense methods to derive a truth. Like a children's game running on non sensical rules like "my cape grants me ability to kill an opponent with a ring of invulnerability"
For them, everything is in a perpetual debate. The debate IS the point of the debate, and not to find knowledge at the end of the debate. They give the impression of being like Newton, people always questionning their world... but unable to find anything because guess what, intellectuals already found the correct answers so you either have to copy or get the wrong ones.
- Second, the school doesn't care as long both sides are happy
The intellectual crowd get knowledge, great!
The antiintellectual crowd gets to a method split :
The teacher wants to spread knowledge even to people who don't want it (the child who copied his parents, then the parents).
About the principal, I think he's actually an at least partially reasonable man, but he is just too scared of the school losing reputation to stand up against the parents.
its $2000 + $2000 = $20002000 according to logic.
i was just thinking about this... what a stupid ending
