Having a completely portable blower, with enough output to do the job of removing debris or clearing off an area, is REALLY handy!
We’ve recently bought the DeWalt® DCBL722 Axial Blower as a bare tool - without a charger or battery. The unit costs $149 and is part of the DeWalt® 20V Flexivolt Platform.
The tool without the battery weighs just under 8 pounds/3.6 kg and is well-balanced even after the battery is added. The packaging was more than adequate and the contents were nested well and damage-free. There are only 4 items when the package is opened - the main blower unit, the tube, concentrator tip, and documentation.
Putting it together is straightforward, although the latch that holds the blower tube to the blower body is a bit finicky. It’s best to understand how it works before assembling the unit and then attempting to take it apart. Said another way, it’s easier to put the unit together than it is to take it apart!
There are two types of blowers; centrifugal and axial. This is an axial unit - the fan’s central axis is in line with the flow of air and the motor shaft. If you think of the turbine blades of a jet engine, you’ve got the right idea. Centrifugal blowers have the fan perpendicular to the flow of the air, with the motor off to the side. The drying fans in car washes are typically this type.
Some key specifications include a sound rating of 61dB, velocity output of up to 125 mph (201 kph), the maximum CFM (cubic foot per minute) produced by this unit is 450.
Practically, this unit packs enough power to quickly clear a smooth area or lawn of leaves. It’s not too heavy, well balanced, and has a reasonable run time before depleting the battery. We contacted DeWalt® Technical Services to get their insights on battery life. Unfortunately, they were not that helpful and only offered general observations while citing variables such as temperature, how old the battery was, the condition of the blower, what speed it was run at, and so forth. Even so, they said that a typical battery (they did not reference what capacity battery) would allow for a running time of about 20 minutes.
Our experience is a 5 aH battery, with the blower running at full speed, is just short of 20 minutes. However, we get much longer life running the unit at half to three-quarter speed. This does two things: extend the battery life and reduce “blow-back” when clearing debris. There are many settings in which a lower flow of air works well - including in corners and along walls.
We found this tool to be very handy and have decided to store it in the house along with other household care and maintenance tools and supplies. We built a hanger/charger base for placement in our mudroom. You can watch the construction and installation of the hanger and charger base here:
    • Cordless Tool and Char...
We’ll return one year later and give another review of how this blower has faired. Our initial impressions are positive, but time will tell. Watch for the update here!
In the meantime, having tools like this makes routine jobs easier and more likely to be accomplished ongoing and help you to JUST DO IT YOURSELF!

I was looking for a lightweight blower for my deck. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxgioZQl3J5wPGAeDINzbieKbT5qomSEx3 There are some huge trees around my house and the leaves and pods drop all over my deck. Having to move furniture around to sweep has become too big a chore. This blower was the answer. It is light enough for this 70yr old lady and powerful enough to blow all the tree droppings off my rather large deck. Thank you B&D. Be aware the cord is not included. I use a 3 prong outdoor cord 25' cord for my 12' x 20' deck. The cord retainer works very well, but don't try to pass the plug through it. That is NOT how it works. You just have to loop the cord and it works great. One of my best purchases. Very happy.

I got one of these a year ago. Thanks for explaining how the cruise control works! HAHA. I was trying to do it trigger first, because that made sense, and I thought it didn't work! Yeah, I get about 10-15 minutes out of a 5A battery. This isn't for big jobs, but is sure is handy for small ones! Great video. Thanks.

Went from 40v B&D to this 20v Dewalt and HOLY COW this thing is powerful. In fact it's CFM and speed specs are comparable to my Stihl gas blower!! Waitley batterys make them cheap cheap to keep. PS the Dewalt long throw polisher is an EXCELLENT tool as well.
I have 4.0 and 5.0 Dewalt batteries and 2 5.0 Waitleys and at full speed I'd say 10-15 minutes and then you'll notice it's slowing down for another 5ish minutes before it shuts down.
As noted you dont' need full blast very often and the screaming at full throttle is a bit annoying without earplugs.
As most manufacturers back away from 48v+ tools the improvement in 20v and 40v (that's quoting start up speed, lasts 1 second, these are 18v and 36v tools in normal running ;) is very impressive!

Craftsman gas blower finally bit the dust. Asked for a battery blower for Christmas and received this. Middle of Winter so haven’t unboxed it yet but after your video I am very excited to put it to use. My only question is instead of buying a couple small batteries like you have shown handy, would I be able to attach the FLEXVOLT 20V/60V MAX Battery, 9.0-Ah (DCB609)? It looks bulky but I’ll be using it in a remote area away from a constant power station.

    • @DirtFarmerJay
      @DirtFarmerJay  7 місяців тому +2

The jury is still out on this. DeWalt is saying that their Flexvolt 20/60v battery is "backwards compatible" with standard 20v tools they have issued earlier. Sounds promising, but there has been word of problems. You can check out this video to see what I mean:
      ua-cam.com/video/SooxTKibzpc/v-deo.html
The idea of the 60v battery is that you can run more powerful tools, or gang them to create supply a 120v tool. It's all getting there, true "cord lessness", but they are expensive, and they are batteries, so they will wear out.
When I'm using the blower for extended times, I pack a couple of 5 or 6 Ah batteries, and that works for me. But, you may have more work to do, for an extended time, than I do.
      I hope this helps.
      Best, DFJ

I had had this same blower for a year or so now and the only gripe I have is the run time. Even with the brushless motor it likes the batteries. That being said I blow my blacktop driveway off after mowing the grass.y driveway is about 400’ and my area in front of the garage is about 24’ x 40’ so there is a lot of area. Usually uses two 20 amp 4 ah batteries.

Hi, Just bought one. I think my "Cruise Control" might be broken. I try to set it to a position, the blower turns on accordingly, and then it gradually just moves itself back to the off position. Any thoughts on that? Also, I bought one that came with the battery and charger. I went to charge the battery earlier. It blinked and then became solid indicating full charge. I was a little surprised to the red light turned completely off when I walked by it later. Is that normal?

@@DirtFarmerJaythanks! I just did some research, and I can concur with your answer! It seems that any 20 volt system can use the FLEX VOLT 20/60 battery, and it pays power backwards.
In other words, if your tool only requires 20 volts, it will use only 20v from the battery.
But, it will continue to sap all the extra energy, giving you extra run time. (Up to 3 times the amount of time!)
Thanks to your video, and your confirmation of the batteries, I will buy the 722, as I already have the 9 amp hour, and the flex volt, for my ice fishing drill!
