      That's the thing, though. It's hard to be interesting and objective at the same time. Usually, people are the most passionate and interesting when talking about something they either love or hate and don't particularly care about being objective. Which is one of the reasons he's so entertaining.

    As you are the linguist of the Medieval Mythbusters here's a question for you. In Planet of the Apes they still speak the same English language (or French in the novel) after a thousand years. Would a language be recognizable, or at least understandable, after so long?

    • @FrenchLightningJohn
      @FrenchLightningJohn 7 років тому +17

      from my limited knowledge of language trough history i would say not understandable and really few recognizable, just look at old english/french middle english/french and modern english/french it didn't take that long to change drastically especially if you go check the difference between old and modern english/french

      I can recommend you the Nier OST. The producer asked the singer to sing in Italian, French, english (and maybe german) but not in the todays linguages but to imagine them in 200 years on a devastated planet. It's very interesting because, as a french, when I hear the track "grandma", the song is meant to be sing in futur french. I can recognize the tone and I think I recognize the words but without even being able to recognize th lyrics. That's a really strange sensation to live, always under the impression to have the lyrics on the tip of the tongue but never able to understand it.

      If there isn't too much contact with other languages, yes, could be. If you look at written modern and medieval Icelandic, there are a lot of similarities still. It's more like dialects of a language really. Grammar and vocabulary have changed, but not so very much. I'm no native speaker of Icelandic, I just learnt it on an exchange year, and with that alone I could gather information from old Icelandic texts even before I started studying Scandinavistics. It's very different in central Europe where there was constant language contact with all sorts of language families. Icelandic usually had contact with other Norse languages so there wasn't that much input and exchange. English is the exact opposite, with its Anglo-Saxon, Norse, Latin and Norman/French influences, my professor always affectionately called it a "bastard language".

    • @IONATVS
      @IONATVS 7 років тому +5

      If you read Chaucer or Mallory you'll get a good idea of how much English has changed in the last 600 years. You can probably understand the general idea of what's being said, but you need to really sit down and take some time if you want to parse everything. There'll be minor gramatical differences, very different choices of what vocabulary to use, and many words will have completely different connotations, but there's enough there to figure out the differences by context clues. Of course, English has two the rather unique problems that most other european languages don't: (1) when the Latin alphabet was first applied to it, English phonetics fit the Latin alphabetical model pretty poorly, and there was yet to be an agreement as to how to adapt the spellings, so most words had multiple spellings...and authors of the time saw it as a sign of skill to be able to spell the same word in as many different ways that vaguely made sense with how it was pronounced as possible...but that would presumably not be a problem if they continued to use the existing spelling norms and only changed them as they changed naturally. And (2) English had a huge shift in pronunciation (The Great Vowel Shift) between the 14th and 17th centuries. This would make listening to someone who lived before or during the shift seem like they had a thick accent...but makes the spelling we did settle on make a little more sense in light of how they used to be pronounced being more similar to the romance language interpretations of the letters.
      1000yrs would be more significant, but mostly in the vocabulary, not the grammar. The Danish vikings had already simplified away most of Old English's case and gender system long before then, so the grammatical changes between then and now were pretty much the same as between Chaucer and now, but a lot of English's vocabulary came from the Normans, and they hadn't been on the island long enough for their words to filter down into vernacular speech: you'd be able to understand a lot of the words they used, but you'd have to limit your vocabulary to one of germanic origin to be understood yourself.
      Then there is another consideration: the rate of change in language decreases with higher literacy, inter-connectedness and exposure to media, so future changes would likely be less than past ones unless.
      TL;DR if English's history is any indication (though it has admittedly changed far more than the average for other languages in the same period), you would probably be able to understand some English in 1000 years, but only with active effort.

    I seriously enjoy his videos and the diverse topics he covers. He not only covers ancient history like you and several other topics, but he also covers time periods like World War 2 and what goes on in them like basic info that is not really apparent. For example, what is the composition of a platoon? The number of troops reaches an average of 30 because that is usually the maximum number of men that you can get to know personally to work as a cohesive and familiar unit. Too few men is not as effective while too many men would decrease the efficiency of the leader's ability to command his troops. It is all fascinating information.

    Hey, Metatron! This is the first time I watch one of your videos and I thought I'd leave a comment.
    I've heard about you and your channel before from Matt and Skall (and I think from Shad, Thrand and Lloyd too) and I've seen some of your videos appear in my suggestions from time to time. I'm usually very reticent to try out a new content creator, and when I see a suggested video from a channel I'm not already subscribed to, I tend to just ignore it for that very reason.
    I was watching one of Lloyd's latest videos today when I saw this video of yours among the suggestions, and I thought: "Hey, it's that Metatron guy I've heard good things about, and he's talking about Lloyd. Let's check it out".
    I must say, you can now count me as one of your subscribers. You seem to be an eloquent, sensible, intelligent and educated man. All qualities I highly appreciate. I already knew you had an interest in history as I gathered it's a topic you have been making content about, but learning you are also a linguist convinced me to subscribe.
    I work as a translator myself in French, English and Japanese (je suis français), and languages are among my main interests along with history.
    I'm glad to now be one of your subscribers and I can already guess by looking at your playlists and the titles of many your videos that watching them is going to be very enjoyable. Kudos to you, Sir! :)

      G'day, oh effusively & excessively Feathery Funnyman...!
      You should probabbublie consider the point that, while you may have an apparently endless list of topics upon which thou might wish to pontificate..; the self-imposed stricture of uploading daily has meant that at least 3 or 4 of every 7 of your Videos are boring and formulaic as Batshit to watch, especially as you extend the waffling empty meaningless "Preamble" before you begin to discuss your "Brainfart-Of-The-Day".
      (I paused at 1:29, to write this, & I won't be going back in to wade through whatever the fcuk you finally decide you might like to suggest because like everybody else who watches Lindybeige - I *KNOW* that he's a GREAT Content-Provider.
      Ask yourself some Question which matters, perhaps....; next time...
      For you to fuck around with a self-serving Clique-Baity Title/Subject, such as this, simply proves that you are clearly *FAILING UNDER PRESSURE* ; & therefore making yourself look like an arrogant hubristic Dickhead, because it's self-imposed pressure, driven by your own ambitious Ego..., which is kinda sad to observe.
      So, pull your Head in, please, & go back to 2 or 3 Uploads per week, on topics which you CARE sufficiently about to make a watchable Video about ; and stop looking like a "pointscoring" Try-Hard Wannabe, every day of the week.
      Because, you're right on the point of becoming a Carricature of who you're trying to portray yourself as being.
      So, back-off ; before you fuck up, entirely!
      Just(ifiably ?) Sayin' ,
      Take it easy...
      ;-p
      Ciao !

    I like LindyB. He is a very good storyteller. I can listen to him go on and on for an hour or two easily without getting bored. Yes, he has his flaws, like everybody else. He can sometimes be a little too proud and doesn't want to admit when he is wrong. Some people complain about him being too British-centric, and admittedly it can be a little annoying sometimes to those of us who were lucky enough not to be born British. But I think his Britishness (or Englishness) is part of his charm and adds to it.

    But almost everything he does interests me.
    I’ve taken ballroom dance, evolutionary phycology fascinates me, I’m an avid student of history, and weapons have always intrigued me.
    But most of all he makes his videos in the same exact way that I think.
    Very rarely will someone passionately speak in a linear straight line, and that makes his content feel so much more natural.

      No Man's Sky Naturalist
      "Blatant misogyny" I've never seen that. Also, regardless of my beliefs on climate change, don't you think it's silly to ignore / shut down the arguments of deniers? Calling a skeptic of climate change a "denier" is a bit like a Christian shutting down an atheist argument by yelling unbeliever in their face.

    • @Beery1962
      @Beery1962 7 років тому +2

      Kjartan The Viking I'm not engaged in an "argument" with Lindybeige. I'm just judging him based on what he's said in the past. I used to be a fan - he has some good ideas on weaponry, but I think he should stick to that subject, because on social and environmental subjects, he's a complete nutcase. When a person is good at something, it doesn't mean we have to defer to him on everything else.

      Marc Ritz I worry more about him talking about stuff I know nothing about if his information is inaccurate. At least when I watch youtube videos on subjects I'm familiar with I can spot when someone is full of shit and know not to take the "information" in the video seriously. From what I've read in these comments, it seems that it's best to take anything lindybiege says with a large grain of salt.

      Lindybeige is the "Dunning-Kruger effect" incarnate. He talks about shit he doesn't know that much about as if he was an expert in the subject, bringing a lot of false information in the process. Sometimes he knows his subject, but it's hard to spot the difference if you don't know the subject yourself.
      Well, his video on global warming is the perfect example of him talking out of his ass without having any clue what he's talking about.
