- Countdown Vampires - delightful PS1 survival horror cheese.
Countdown Vampires is one of the many Resident Evil clones that popped in the late 90s. It's one of the lesser ones in regards to quality. Yet, there is a goofy charm throughout that you can only find from the early days of survival horror.

While there are long stretches of tedium, there's enough cheesy delight within. Enough to keep me going. The game has gotten more attention in recent years thanks to the Angry Videogame Nerd. But even then, he didn't get into the elements of Countdown Vampires where the game really shines. And the game itself does no favors on that front. The best the game has to offer remains buried in a game mode you have to unlock, and even then it only shows up at the very end.
It's too bad because it becomes a case of the snake eating its own tail. Where the bizarre and nonsensical turn into sheer brilliance. Something that would've helped the game stand out more, for both good and bad reasons.

Getting real Michigan Report from Hell vibes off this game.
Also I can't get over a homicide detective in his early 20's who walks around without a shirt, a single earring, and sporting a tribal neck tattoo. I'd feel real confidant seeing him roll up in his muscle car to investigate my relatives murder, lol.
Isn't the voice actor for Misato even one of of the voice actors for one of the reporters in Michigan? I think one of the voice actors for one of the swat team members may be Barry Burton himself.
OG or REmake ? @@EarthboundX
@@kreevisful The original Barry.
Kinda wanted to see what you'd say about the true final boss battle and the Prince of Darkness mode, only for these not even get a mention. Guess they really did bury them way too deep.
So, for context, if I remember the unlock terms correctly, in Special Mode you are supposed to let the five minute timer to *run out* (predictably enough the only way I found out about this in the pre-"just use GameFAQs" era was on accident), then Gells wakes up, you enter a fight but he is too strong and kills Keith, Keith vamps out in the cutscene after ("so that cover art wasn't lying" moment) and another boss fight ensues which you can actually win and get the "true ending". I think that also unlocks the vampire mode Prince of Darkness minigame where you just run through the game and murder everyone. Really sounds like the kind of a playground bullshit rumor one would get into "nuh-huh, honest, this happens!" slap fights over with their peers, but this time, it's actually real!
This game is so fucking stupid but really endearing.
These things sound awesome!
Sounds badass. I need to learn how to emulate.
Yeah I was surprised at the lack of a mention, but what can ya do
To answer your question, I was only able to deny my instinct to air guitar by putting my hands under my legs
That's a way of dealing with it.
The Blood Type system and the "Name" portion are hidden passwords to unlock certain modes and easter eggs. If you are curious about what those Easter Eggs are, I'll happily share them as I'm a longtime fan of this "guilty pleasure" game. I even have the "Prequel" comic as well.
What’s the comic all about?
Wasn't one "Prince Darkness" which unlocked vampire Keith mode where you went around and killed main story characters? I recall playing that game mode. Not sure what exactly the blood types did unless it was difficulty related in some way.
@@gadellomagnollo1810 It's a prequel comic showing the events leading up to the game in more detail.
@@eclipse509 Yep. Also, one of the passwords is "Yuka Kobayashi" which shows random sexy pictures of the model who was used for Misato which are periodically added to the E-mails you get in the game's plot, another password is called "Burger Chicky" which supposedly gives you weapons with infinite ammo. Also, the in-game currency is essential for health items which mostly consist of candy bars and capri-sun packets of juice which can be combined when you get tall bottles for full health. (Yes the Japanese version's passwords strangely also work for the USA version.)
Where does one get the comic, btw and please, elaborate on the PW and Blood Type thing :) Esp. if it's not mentioned online/on GFAQ.
Okay, I cannot deny that those CGI cutscenes are waaay ahead of their time
I'd say they are very Parasite Eve, if you played that one. It was a hell of a ride.
Didn't air guitar but my head was for sure bopping to the opening song
Love how Shinji started the video "Misato!? Misato?!"
I wish I loved games like this the way you do
Honestly, I know this game isn't very good by most metrics, but I've loved it since I was a kid and it will always have a special place in my heart.
8:51 "i say right foot creep oo walkin wit that heater🗣️🗣️🗣️🔥"
22:40 Wait a second... you missed quite a bit there. (And a lot of other things with this vid. The Vampire Keith minigame, the misleading advertisements, the Japanese version having diffirent opening music, that one examine dialogue where the text Is still In Japanese(Especially after bringing up the poor translation), the Gellis bossfight, the true ending requirrement, etc. ) *And who's uncredited playthrough did you use for footage?*
Yeah, the way plenty of content ultimately was rushed over did kinda sat weird with me. I guess it was more of a "I have to cover this game eventually so let's just get it out of the way" video
If things were a lot diffirent for me, I might eventually start talking and doing reviews of my own but only a divine miracle would allow that. Heck the promo page for the game was still up until around a year ago (?) were showing some early versions of some rooms/areas(Casino rooms had an entirely diffirent asethetic Instead of the post-apoc scrap metal look, the town was by a lake, unusued cutscenes that were used In the commercial, etc.) this game might have some Interesting cut content hidden away. @@shards-of-glass-man
Thanks for reminding me about the additional footage - added to description.
That voice acting at his introduction has some serious The Room vibes. XD
This was supposed to be the Resident Evil killer. There's supposed to be an 8-issue comic book series and a TV series.
The plot of this game actually takes place after R?MJ: The Mystery Hospital. Why you may ask? There are some plot elements in that game which do link to the events of Countdown Vampires (specifically the Special Story version) as well as the appearance of Misato.
Sadly, that game never got released outside of Japan though there is a fan translation if I'm not mistaken.
How...random.
Never expected _that_ game to have a connection with this one.
EDIT:
Just saw a play-through of R?MJ and I find that connection _very_ unlikely, considering Misato dies near the end of the game.
@@elinfini Hmm, looks like you may be right. To be fair, I actually didn't know about this plot point until you brought it up.
You never realized that "being responsible" isn't the same as being the actual murderer?
Maybe he didn't come to his help, maybe he screwed something up and his partner was murdered due to it.
I'm pretty sure if he was the actual killer that would have been in the file or rather, he wouldn't have been free at all.
The opening video music had some serious PS1 Gran Turismo menu selection theme vibes going on.
That's mainly just the FM synths
Hey there! Good to see another fellow youtuber covering this game in detail!
I mostly agree with all your observations and critiques, and since most of my comment was already acknowledged by others, ill only add a little nugget of data:
-That purifying mechanic? Aside from the NG+ completion stat, it also acts as a free money grab (you actually loot the vampire wallets as you pour the white water lmao).
-Theres actually a way to stun vampires easily, normally you need to waste 10 or so darts to put them down (unless its the stronger red darts). But if you use the handgun given to you at the casino, and shoot about 4 bullets at them, it weakens them to the point that 1-2 darts are enough to do the job. I actually found this out on my own while doing some achievement sets at retroarch, shoutout to those fine folks.
Not much to add, thanks for the video!
P.D: I did air Bass, not guitar...
Happy this finally got recommended to me!
I weirdly love this game. The song "Main Stage" is fucking stuck in my head everytime I think of this game. Something about how 'off' it is jives with me. I played it around the time I played galerians and T.R.A.G. in 2020. I have played Galerians' sequel and itself multiple times. I was considering playing Countdown Vampires again sooner rather than later (my backlog has me rarely replay games unless they are on the shorter side) to get the extra story info. Still will probably do so. I remember taking a while to learn some kind of 'semi-reliable' pattern to the gambling to get enough money i never had to worry about it clearing out vending machines. Ah I also like the mechanic of 'saving' people even if it is only a slight variance to how combat plays out. I also love the 'defeated' sounds the vampires make. They are so goofy and over the top. Countdown Vampires became one of my 'guilty pleasure' games with Galerians becoming one of my favorite games/tank controls/ps1 games of all time at the time. T.R.A.G. opened my eyes to how tank controls was used for action games leading me to playing Onimusha (warlords on steam came out around the time I started looking for a copy).
I basically just reminisced about playing a few ps1 games (and the sequel on ps2 for Galerians: Ash) in 2020 haha. Things were still shit, but stable enough back then that I was playing a lot of new games. That is the year I also finished SMT Nocturne. I also finished the classic REs I hadn't played early in that year finishing RE3 finally and beating Code Veronica.
I survived two seconds before starting to air guitar at the intro
19:48 I cant believe Silent Hill 3 stole its ending from Countdown Vampires.
Waoow, I remember the ads for this in old magazines
My one criticism of this video is that Boulder Punch didn't make his own rendition of the song Final Countdown to put in this video.
I was eating so didn’t do the air guitar, was tempted though and did anyone else notice the petrol fuel gauge said OIL 🤣
that intro...talk about fire ❤🔥
Joke's on you, I air BASSed.
Fun fact: the voice of Keith is Jeff manning, he’s also the voice of the narrator in smash bros, shaft from castlevania, and Nolan from Clock Tower 2.
This has to be the most "so bad it's good" voice acting ever. It's worse than the original Resident Evil, it's amazing 🤣
Also the man in black is like Vinesauce Joel's Mr. Kill, lol
Managed no Air Guitar as I was holding a cat.
Boulder Punch at it again, every boulder on earth will catch the fade
I think "responsible for his partner's murder" and "murdered his partner" are very different. And the latter is something most police departments would try to sweep under the rug. Although, yeah, assigning him to work a private security detail is pretty... unusual.
Lots of Xavier: Renegade Angel energy
I see Jane uses the same voice modulator as they did in Nailgun Massacre.
What a banger credit tune
Liquid Snake would love this game
Keith saying "Misato", isn't that just, like... The correct way to pronounce it in Japanese?
Though when it comes to situations like that it's always strange to figure out what to do, should you try to say it in the original language and end up having 'two languages' or should you just say screw it and go with Me Sah Toe 😅
It’s always those moments in videos showing the top 10 games survival horror hidden gems or evolutions of horror games, in some of the ones listed it shows characters looking odd or interesting or just doing something weird that you’re just curious to find out why, and you become more intrigued the further you look into it,
For me it was the case of Countdown Vampire and Clock Tower such as “why is this character running around shirtless is he a werewolf? Or is human? If so he probably wouldn’t survive, he’ll get bit easily, I’ve got to find out”
Or
“why is this girl not helping her friend out of the pool, she’s drowning and calling your name, the character profile shows that you’re scared and concerned but you’re not doing anything don’t just stand there HELP HER! … Great now she’s gone and who is that figure that jumped out of the pool, was there a serial killer in this game, I’ve got to find out”
One of the cheesiet survival horror games ever made on the Playstation. I can't get enough of the cheesy voice acting in this game. It makes Resident Evil's look like Shakespeare in comparison. Clearly shows that the developers of this game, were having a fun time making this. No matter how campy it is.
This warms my "vampire" heart.
All i know about this game was what was shown on the shitstorm
Protag looks like a mix between Van Darkholme and Billy Herrington
As negative I can be towards video games these days, I miss a good redemption arc for a game dev. Countdown Vampire's dev went on to make actual good Resident Evil games. Bubsy 3D's dev went on to make the Syphon Filter Trilogy. And more recently, the dev behind Rambo The Video Game made Terminator Resistance and Robocop Rogue City.
If only AAA gaming companies could be the same...
Also, check out the Vampire Hunter D PS1 game. No redemption arc for that one.
What resident evil?
This was hilarious. Amazing.
Still have the game, it was fun when I was a teen.
6.9 seconds. That's how long I lasted until the air guitar started

I remember the AVGN episode that talked about it 3 years ago

This is too scary for me

It's Mark McGrath!
I just want to know where Keith’s top went.
He takes it off to cover up someone in the opening cutscene.
@@GiovanniNoeyes I prefer the idea of it never being explained. :P
23:00 WHAT THE!?
Misato!
Is that Darth Black?
Some games should stay lost
I agree
The majority of most modern triple a games shouldn't exist at all
Fun fact: Resident Evil was inspired by this game and basically copied everything from it
Yeah 3 years earlier. Crazy right?
@@morkgin2459 ever heard of corporate espionage?
Finally someone covered This RE clone. I remember Playing this game.

There's an avgn episode for this game
You should do the Outlast series🙌🏼 love your content bro keep it up 🤙🏼
That pronunciation of Misato is a weird combination of very wrong and unusually correct. Japanese "t" sounds are actually quite difficult to pronounce accurately with an English tongue (they're MUCH more heavily pronounced, like making a hard TH sound while only making a T sound), and the protag makes a solid go of it.
Unfortunately, he fails at the cadence. Japanese names generally don't have emphases in them, so Misato isn't "mi-SAH-to," as most Westerners would say, but just a quick "mi-sa-to."
I don't think that voice is what the character artist had in mind when they designed the hero. He just sounds like such a weeny. Or maybe he is a weeny and just tries to look cool, but can't do anything about his weeny voice.
Calling thid game "mediocre" is pushing it. It's one of the worst video games released on PS1.
The one thing that was even remotely good about it, were the CGI cutscenes.
