- Looking at the four titles of the dormant Clock Tower Series, which laid some of the foundations of survival horror.
While never a huge seller and its last entry in the series is almost 20 years old, Clock Tower plays an important role in the foundations of survival horror and how it evolved.

Clock Tower beat Resident Evil to the market by a few months.
Clock Tower's focus on hiding and escaping from pursuers has made its way into many other titles, from the heavy hitters in the genre from Resident Evil to numerous indie titles.
Clock Tower first released in 1995, back when this type of game was mostly unexplored territory, got so much right, with its atmosphere aging very well.
Unfortunately, the point-and-click design approach of Clock Tower would work against the future titles in the series. When it did escape that mold, the resulting title, while enjoyable and charming, did lose a lot of that atmosphere that made the original title so special. It also goes way out there and in so many disjointed directions, and yet I can't help but respect it.
Sadly, the Clock Tower series has been dormant since the early 2000s, although it has had spiritual successors like Haunting Ground which took the Clock Tower formula and enhanced it.
In this video, we'll look at the four Clock Tower titles: Clock Tower, Clock Tower 2, Clock Tower: Ghost Head, and Clock Tower 3.

38:41 yes we did 😭
I always lose it whenever Bates kicks someone in Ghost Head, someone is in your way? is there a problem? Well just kick it, solves everything! Kick children, kick lunatics, kick zombies, kick everyone.
He's honestly the best thing about that game. I crack up every time he just kicks the little girl.😆
Bates is absolutely the reason Ghost Head is so bad it's funny, instead of just terrible. His VA especially just nails it!
Bates rules. I once invited Bates to my birthday and all he did was smoke behind the dumpster. Bates is so great.
@@LAVATORR and then he kicked a few guests and brought in a cake with so many candles it was a fire hazard. Good times lol xD
@@Ravenpaw1313 "Bates, while dumpster diving is technically legal, society largely frowns on it, so you should probably get out of there."
"FUCK OFF, I FOUND A HAT"
The dream for me would be Sunsoft putting out a collection of the series, which also results in Capcom putting out an HD version of Haunting Ground
I'd kill for a legit remake of the first entry.
I think that could be amazing. Along with the first PS title.
@@lindyxyo4254 I have been following Remothered since it was first being worked on and it originally was a beautiful looking remake of Clock Tower The First Fear!! I am happy with the Remothered we got but am disappointed we never got the original intended remake of clock tower..
@@lindyxyo4254 why not a proper remaster
And Rule of Rose
@@SilentHill4Life I think Rule of Rose is a Sony IP, or whoever Punchline ended jp being acquired by. The other big rare PS2 horror game is Kuon, which is a FromSoft game but they don't seem interested in rereleases of their old games at the moment
"Don't Cry, Jennifer" is still one of the best chase themes of any game.
I love the idea of Bates. Truly the epitome of "Wait, why would I run away from a ghost if I could just punch it?"
About the motion capture for Clock Tower 3. I do recall this being one of the very early games from Capcom that implemented it with such detail. For its time it blew me away with how well it captured the actor’s movements, to just seeing items be knocked off a shelf in the environment. It’s something we take for granted now, but back then we were so used to still/immobile backgrounds in games.
Clock Tower 3’s performances came off as a play indeed, but I can help feeling it was a flex too 🥲
Clock tower 3's motion capture really reminds me of how the hunters in monster hunter act. But in that game every one is waring massive suits of armour and you can't see thier faces
I'd honestly be curious how Japanese players look back on the acting in this game. In my experience, even Japan's more serious live action media tends to be larger than life and more "play-like" than Western live action. When I first saw the motion capture source footage for Clock Tower 3, the acting had a very familiar look to me.
the kill scene that introduces corroder has and will always make me uncomfortable just from how well it was directed, animated, and voiced. It was like I was truly watching something I shouldn't be.
My first time watching that whole thing play out, I got so immersed in the sweet moment between Albert and his mother that when Corroder burst in, I was genuinely startled and disturbed by what happened. It's a surprisingly good moment in the game, and the one that's stuck with me the most for how well it was done. Runner up to that moment would be May & Mr. Norton's scenes, I liked their little story as well and I always get the warm fuzzies when I see them reunited again.
What a mysterious jogo this game is.
@@AJPwny YESSSSS OH MY GOD this is why it disturbed me too because it really got you into the moment and then ripped it out
It's such a gut punch.
Omg me too. I always have to fast forward that one in any video I watch. It's just too heartbreaking!
Clock Tower 3 is a fuckin' trip of a game. Def worth playing.
Such an amazing game that still holds up today
@@A_UA-cam_Commenter I happen to own a copy actually, I USED to own haunting ground but it dissapeared one day
@@Upsetkiller456 F that, Bro . I hope you get another copy that's affordably priced someday. 👊
Pretty good, except for the dull boss battles and their obtrusive nature. The last few sections were a sight to behold, for sure.
@@A_UA-cam_Commenter Ever heard of emulators?
Clock Tower 3's weird style and arcade-y boss battles remind me a lot of Illbleed, which is also a very strange but charming game.
The charm for me is Bates just dropkicking that child/doll thing every time, that never gets old
Roger Jackson is actually BEST known as the voice of the killer in the SCREAM movies.
I was gonna say I’m pretty sure that was Ghost Face in Ghost Head
Also is the voice of the Cheshire Cat on the EA's Alice games
Watching this, I was also pretty shocked that the Scream killer got snubbed in favor of Cheshire Cat.
@@blueb0mber87 RIGHT??
@@blueb0mber87 he also voiced mojo Jojo in Powerpuff girls.
I remember my uncle playing Clock tower 2 on PS1 when I was a kid. I was watching him play and I would be scared shitless whenever Scissorman would show up
I can remember being in 7th grade and playing Clock Tower 2 at a sleep over at my friend Jesse's house. Despite the crude blocky graphics and the awkward point and click controls, the game was still absolutely terrifying. That night, Jesse's younger brother Jamey was hanging around occasionally as we played, he was perhaps 11 when we were 13, and he was visibly unsettled by the game. I did one of the meanest things I can remember doing to someone at that age: as Jamey was coming around a corner in the darkened hallway, I jumped out and yelled "SCISSORMAN!" He screamed in fear while his brother and I laughed our asses off, and then burst into tears, crying and cussing me out. I immediately felt horrible about it and tried to apologize, but obviously he was not in a forgiving mood and I think it was a few weeks before he talked to me again. Crazy how two years can make such a difference in maturity at those ages...and damn can kids be evil little bastards! I still feel bad about it!
i both love and hate how everyone in CT3 moves like they're having a stroke
It’s just Dennis’s movement that looks like he’s having a stroke, everyone else is fine, especially Alyssa.
Based on that mocap footage they look like they have to pee really bad
I remember younger me watching a let's play of the first Clocktower, and seeing the short guy with the scissors was pretty scary.
The barber that was cut from little nightmares 2 looks like him
@@j0sH092 NOT THE SCISSORMEN!
Clocktower is such an iconic series to horror and point and click, so often replicated but never ever duplicated. This series needs a revival on switch for a point and click remake and a clocktower 3 esque sequel for ps4/5.
I’ve wanted them to do a modern reimagining of the SNES game since I found out it existed.
Well, like half of the series
@@GTAfan421 Detention?
@@GTAfan421 point and click is outdated, but i agree a sequel needs to be made in the Clock Tower 3 realm as well. It was the strongest in the series.
Clock Tower 3, Haunting Ground, Rule of Rose the holy trinity and any horror fan should play at least one
I played and loved all three. Rule of Rose ended up being my favourite survival horror of all time and Haunting Ground is in my top 10 (knowing that I'm à horror game collector with a soft spot for the ps1/ps2 era)
Clock Tower is a game that I hold really close to my heart, one of those games that got me in the path of enjoying the thrill of the scares and yeah, the first game is definately a classic but I have this special love for Clock Tower 3, the cutscenes and the animations and the scenarios with the spirits it was just oozing with love, now as an artist I can see that a lot of care was put into it, even if it's goofy sometimes, the animations of Alyssa being terrified and making those wild turns and acting scared of the sledgehammer or the sheer terror that honestly I can still feel it to this day when seeing the cutscene of the son and the blind mother, Jesus Christ, I think the main point wasn't to be scared it was just the sudden change of tone of the scene that honestly many many years ago I still crumble with fear and shock when I see it, you don't need to make something incredibly terrifying to scare someone, just that change of tone in the scene was enough to get relegated in my memory forever (now as an artist I appreciate it even more). And this is going to sound contradictory, but the goofiness of the scissorhand brothers was actually very charming in a twisted way, like geez they were freaks but they have this charisma to them that you just gotta appreciate.
I really hope the series can come back someday, first fear would be a good candidate to test the waters in a new system with maybe alternative routes or live selections for decisions on the spot, inspired in the original Resident Evil 3. It is the most atmospheric of the three games so something really nice can come out with the right direction. Let's hope it happens :)
The rapid switch from heartwarming to violence makes those scenes really work for me. Even rewatching them in this video made me a bit uncomfortable. I sort of hate how depressing it is, but I can't say that's inappropriate for horror. I think it's one of the reasons that Sledgehammer and Corroder stuck with me much more than Chopper or the Scissor Twins. The latter are more of a gameplay threat while the first two have much more of a realistically terrifying "normal day turns tragic" element to them.
Clock Tower 3 is so campy and the boss fight music is amazing! I actually love the Rooder bloodline story and wish they did more with it.
Man.... I was surprised when I heard you say that you don't find the Scissorman music from Clock Tower 2 scary or intimidating. That music used to TERRIFY me as a kid. Although, to be fair, I didn't discover the original Clocktower game until many years later. Love this video, thanks for your hard work in putting it together!
I'm with him though. To me nothing tops "Don't Cry Jennifer". I don't know what it is about it, but I just feel this ominous aura about it.

MMSCISSORMAN!!!!!!
@@themasterblaze7563 The opening to the first game's chase theme is certainly stronger imo. The first few notes are much louder and more jarring, immediately _demanding_ your attention.
@@Shenaldrac Don't Cry Jennifer is the Scissorman Chase Theme. wym?
@@themasterblaze7563 I'm saying the first game's chase theme song has a stronger opening than the second game's chase theme.
something that really surprised me about the first Clock Tower game is that its setting is supposedly very close to where I live, and that kinda added some extra creep factor to the game for me
The original Clock Tower is so ahead of its time it just blows my mind.
agree. plus the surround sound for every noise rivals even today's games. it was way better than a lot of the games I have now
the early development for remothered had so much potential to become a proper remake of the first clock tower esp with the art style and direction they did. unfortunately it's scrapped forever, was not utilized in the recent two games of remothered.
My mom took me to a game store as a kid and the guy there was trying to sell me Gex for PS1. I bought Clock Tower (2) for PS1 instead just because it looked cool. I was 9 years old and it blew my mind. Absolute classic series to me. Thanks for this video!!!
Would have loved if you talked more about the story and endings of the games
I bet that samurai armor ending pissed off a lot of players.
I think he wanted us to actually watch the playthrough or play the game by ourselves.
But since 2 seems like a chore to play, I wish he did put it in too.
@@SkyYukiGuy Struggle Within definitely seems like it's best to experience through a Long Play video. I watched the one by Genghis Kait and found it to be very thorough, and the best part was I didn't have to struggle with playing it myself.
@@SkyYukiGuy yeah but he goes into explicit detail about the endings during his haunting ground video so why not this one too?
I was one of those poor bastards playing struggle within, ps1. Man what a trip this game was but it put hair on my chest😢
I think a better example of a modern horror game that needs a quickstart option is Resident Evil Village, maybe it should drop you off at the house where you get your first gun
Dude, I loved clock tower 2... The Alyssa and Bates combo was so interesting when I was a kid.
13:20 I loved using the All MIGHTY BLANKET to stop scissorman lol
one weird fact i learned about Clock Tower Ghost Head is that Bates is voiced by Fujiko Takamoto in the japanese version. who is more known as voicing Child Link in Zelda Ocarina of Time. do with that Info what you will.
I remember liking the first Clock Tower because the mc looked like Sarah from Labyrinth, who I had a huge crush on back then. 😂
Editing to add that I didn't know, at the time, she was inspired by Jennifer Connolly
You forgot to add that the game series "Remothered" started as a fan 2D remake of the first Clock Tower, before it become its own IP and a full 3D game unrelated to C.T (but keeping many influence).
There's still a lot of screenshots and footage of the original Remothered around, and it looked wonderful. Unfortunately the prototype 2d demo is officially lost media according to its own creator.
I remember being scared of clock tower 2. But, ghosthead.. my god i laughed so hard with my cousins when playing it back then. And seeing it again with the kicks.. comedy gold. 🤣 it has a special place in my heart, not for good reasons, but still a classic to me
A lot of people disliked the scissor twins of CT3 (which I can definitely understand if you started on the older games) but I've always loved the bizzareness of them, Team Rocket vibes for days.
The villians as a whole were fantastic in CT3. Even if you didn't really like the gameplay, you definitely loved the characters and wacky plot. It's the reason Scissor Woman has been my channel icon for years
I really recommend playing Clock Tower 3 with Japanese voices. The intonation in each voice fits the characters' movements a lot more than the English ones, which sound like they were recorded with the actors reading the script but not looking at the actual cutscenes.
I still like the English voices because of how bad they are
I played both & much prefer the English ones. I think they did well. Of course it was written with Asian culture in mind, but the English voice actors were incredible too.
It would still look ridiculous but maybe less jarring
The wacky motion capture works for every language
You mean also Roger Jackson the voice of ghost face in Scream
Underrated horror franchise. Hopefully Capcom will bring it back or remake the first title like with RE2, RE3, and upcoming RE4.
A remaster would be nice.
Doubt it honestly. It's not as mainstream as Resident Evil, so there would be no significant profit for them. Especially when the last kinda-Clock Tower game (Haunting Ground) was released many years ago while Resident Evil is still being released throughout all these years. I would welcome it though because I've never played any Clock Tower game and only CT3 seems not too old for me. The first one is a bit too slow in gameplay and the second one looks, well, gross.

I love the over the top acting in clock tower 3 cutscenes
3:59 the lack of such an option seriously stops me from replaying both RE7 and RE8. It's that bad
RE7's unskippable cutscenes suck so much
You can skip RE8 cutscenes tho
Most games need this option, nowadays games can average 20 hours or more during a playthrough, so it gets really tedious going through the opening. One of the best examples I can think of is Red dead 2, a great game but man that opening, it’s just too much.
@@senorbongo4975 It's a 4 hour game to unlock the 100 hour game
I think I'm in the minority in this, but I like to experience the whole game, especially if it's heavy on story. But I'm probably the only one who always does the tutorials if there's even a hint of story content in them.
It's strange that you mentioned Bates' actor also voiced the Cheshire Cat and not literal Ghostface in Scream, lol.
Wow, mood whiplash doesn’t even begin to describe some of those Clock Tower 3 cutscenes. XD
The spirits floating up to heaven is like something out of XRA.
straight up decking scissor man in CT2 will never get old for me
The premise of Ghost Head is so amazing, there's so much you can do not with having two playable characters, but two personalities within the same character and how the handle events in the game differently. As BP said, shame it's used in... this game.
36:57 Meowth that’s right dead serious team rocket moment.
I LOVED the first one and some of the sound effects still trigger panic in my brain. The third Clocktower was the first game I actually cried because of, the Corroder scene for some reason really got to me.
Ghost Head was a mess, but Bates was the best character of the series, hands down.
I JUST watched this and the port got announced :DDDDD
You make really well made edited videos, can't imagine how long coming up with the script and editing takes. Seriously, great job. Learned about a lot from this series and I love the Haunting Grounds video.
Great watch! Clock Tower is arguably my favourite horror franchise in gaming so its always great to see it getting more attention. Also Roger Jackson (voice of Bates) was and still is notably the voice of Ghostface in the Scream franchise 😊 which is so cool.
Thank you so much for this. I'm working on a Clock Tower project that I'm hoping will take off and this was a very informative and nostalgic video for me. Seeing Gotts punch Scissorman again was great.
Clock Tower is one of those sad series that started very strong, with an iconic title, then went on with weaker iterations. Clock Tower III is kind of an oddball, it has its charm while being resolutely goofy for moments.
Alas, the PS1 titles could be entirely ignored. Stating that the first one is a good follow-up is quite generous, the story is paper-thin and quite convoluted (gotta love the fact that Scissors Man scatter the characters without killing them outright in his castle, very fair play of him), the different endings are an illusion- only several degrees of failure. And, plainly, it lacks the scare factor. As for Ghost Head, it reminds me of the 'one-true-path' Gamebooks : there is only one road to victory and more often than not, it is nonsensical and yoy may fail long after a "mistake" that you never knew you did.
Haunting Grounds is a nice spiritual successor, the first title coul use a remake- other than that, I think the series can stay dormant.
I, for one, would love to see more games inspired by batshit Italian horror, it’s my favorite horror genere and a well of untapped potential when it comes to playable experiences
So glad you covered one of my favorite survival horror series.
Say what you will, some of my fondest memories were trying to beat Clock Tower: Ghost Head with my older sister back in the day. The whole series holds a special place in my heart because of time we spent playing them together
Bates: You little shit
10/10 best character.
I love your videos so much, feels like experiencing games I never played
Damn! I've always wanted to see you do the Clock Tower series! Love it and wish it was longer
Clock Tower 3 was truly what inspired iconic games & their mechanics: like Haunting Ground & capcom's future survival horror games such as Resident Evil (especially their current gen titles like biohazard & village). A massively underrated horror game. Both Clock Tower 3 & Haunting Ground were severely under promoted in the US
Great stuff, awesome content. 💪👊🔥🔥🔥💯
I loved this game. Scared me so much when I was a wee lad. I have to say though, its unique and I wish I had more. I knew for a fact that we would see the bedsheet stopping sisscor man lmao.
Clock Tower 3's soundtrack is fucking GOLD!
i love the clock tower over acting mocap. It really keeps up with the over the top acting VO
Clock Tower 3 was my first look at the series when a girlfriend of mine picked it up. I'm not a big horror/slasher person, generally speaking, but there was a lot it did with the first case from the music and overall production that I found to be great. Once we got the bow and everything went silly....well, I sort of felt like it took the punch of the horror away. I want to one day play it again to at least see it through to the end. I don't mess around too much with emulators, but I probably should find a way to play the first one.
Every character in CT3 acting like they did 5 lines of coke before the cutscene
It dawned on me during the first 6 minutes of this just how horrifying these games are, and I'd never heard of them before. You did a fantastic job showcasing them in an interesting way right out of the gate.
One of my favorite survival horror series growing up!
Oh boy a reasonable length video about a series of games. How nice.
Amazing work!
The thing I like the most about Clock Tower 3 is how "adorable", I think that would be the best way to put it, the writting is at times. The girl and her father; The son and his elderly mom; I felt genuinely sad when they died. I think the only other games that I've seen do something similar was the Echo Night series.
I never played the first game but the struggle within holds such a special place in my heart, even with the complete lack of obvious direction
Ghost Head really haunted my dreams as a kid. Never knew the name of the game but remember watching a cousin playing it once. I don't think he ever left the house.
For the longest time I thought it was a fake game that I dreamed about. Happy that I finally found it but also sad that it's so bad.
Clock tower 3 was such a defining moment in my childhood. My parents were no strangers to horror, and my dad would often play... not so appropriate games with me in the room (*cough* god of war *cough*). I was lucky enough to witness him play through the first bit of clock tower 3. I barely recall anything past sledgehammer, but i do remember the scissor twins. Gave me nightmares for weeks. It's funny how easily scared i was then, and how much of a horror fan i am now...
Ol boy getting his head lopped off from the clock hand was glorious! I don't care HOW cheesy it was! 😱😂
I want to examine how you live rent free in my head. I was just reminiscing about this series! Thank you Boulder Punch!
I get the sense Clock Tower 3 is something like the Waxworks movies, with the focus of on the killers in 1 and as weird and wacky as 2
the tonal shift of the loving grandma and albert to seeing them being put into an acid bath by a laughing lunatic, absolutely threw me, I was in actual shock holy shit
Clock Tower 2 was my introduction to this series. What a trip that was.
Hahahahahaha..... of course Japan had a crush on Jennifer Connelly in her early roles
the chase theme for clock tower 2 probably isn’t the most suspenseful & intense as it should be but boy is it a BANGERR
ghost head is actually my fave lol it's so weird and so memorable
About Struggle Within not being tied with the Barrows family, this is incorrect. The entire premise of TSW is that the "curse" of the Maxwell family is Dan and Bobby being resurrected through Twins every few generations. Alyssa and Bates are those twins, and that is why they were buried in the woods. Bates died but lived through Alyssa(The Drama CD creates a lore hole where the twin was supposedly female as well) The ritual and the Golden Statue in Clock Tower 1 was Mary casting a spell that ensured that they would come be birthed once more in the future as well as time immortality. You first become aware of the connection when you read Allen Hale's letter to Phillip Tates that mentions a ritual. There is a connection, but as usual the game makes little to no indication to what exactly happened.
It is speculated because Alyssa lived that the curse continued on, which is why we have the Scissor twins. It's not confirmed. Nice video.
clock tower 2 scared the shit outta me as a kid, I loved it. me and a friend rented it and stayed up all night playing it. I actually still have a complete physical copy of it for PS. and the main thing that hurt CT3 for me is that during the boss fights you couldn't adjust your aim once you drew the bow, so if the boss moved you were SOL. I've also even contemplated cosplaying as scissorman.
Clock Tower 3 ah a game I can never forget, 1ve the games my mom played & couldn't beat same with Resident Evil 1 (couldn't ever figure out how to get out the 1st floor/foyer area)
Clock Tower we vividly remember her stuck in this room with a stage & couldn't figure out how tf to get out, even when i tried I couldn't figure it out.
Games really were poorly designed wtf to do back then.
He’s back!
There's this game called NightCry, which is, apparently, from the creators of Clock Tower.
From what I saw, it plays a lot like Clock Tower, with the hiding places, stamina and the like.
I get the feeling that the overacting in Clock Tower 3 was meant to be evocative of Kabuki Theatre.
I remember as a kid there was a channel that just showed video game trailers and late at night they'd show horror game trailers and thats how i found out about Silent Hill 3 and Clock Tower 3 which scared me but intrigued by the game
as a kid I saw the artwork for clock work on ps1 in a BLOCKBUSTERS, and it scared the FUCK out of me
Cutscenes in Clock Tower 3 be playing like a modern Korean movie.
Sure ahead of its time.
Great stuff
Lol the "my head is stuck" scene was funny.
Haunting Ground is my all time favorite game, I have the logo tattooed on me, but I love clock tower 1 and 2 as inspiration
The animation of the 3rd game ,truly surpasses most gaming animations we have to day!
Great content
Great video.
“Pretty good for a coward” *kick* lmao idky but that scene is just so parody-like
Clocktower 3 feels like a fever dream in some parts 😂
Growing up, I only played what my Dad did until my teens. I was too scared for horror games but recently it's all I care about lol so I love these videos of deep dives to better understand games that do way back but once only recent seen.
The pool introduction of Scissorman in the first one always irked me. They were willing and able to create custom sprites for Ann splashing about, Scissorman leaping out of the pool, the water, and even unique sound effects, but couldn't create a sprite of Jennifer bending over and trying to help so she doesn't just stand there like an absolute bellend while her friend dies? That said, they make up for it in Clock Tower 2 with Nolan just fucking yeeting Scissorman in the face like at 13:26 lmfao
I love how you go from sucker punching a monster in the face to summoning bahamut zero
Never played these games but the music is so good!
