  • Non verbal communication is not easy for our autistic daughter. Since she cannot use words to tell us what hurts, she uses different forms of communication to tell us. We have to figure out what she is trying to tell us with her actions and emotions. #autism #weefam

    I love watching our children play in their own way!!! They have their little toys and their little babbles , it just makes me happy. Our little B just had to be sedated for an MRI and the IV was really hard, even with the “laughing liquid” he was just so over stimulated...he didn’t like the cover they used for the IV , he didn’t even like sitting on the table ... and then when he woke up from sedation it was 2 1/2 hours of him thrashing. As a parent we know these things are important but it’s hard to see them so upset and just confused. I am glad your B had a better experience this time around!

    • @TheWeeFamily
      @TheWeeFamily  5 років тому +1

      She definitely makes up her own types of play and we enjoy watching her mind work. That’s so hard 😞 we usually have to weigh if whatever needs to be done is worth the struggle.

I had to have some in my toe not long ago and needed 3 full size men to hold me down.. for average people they say it feels like a little pinch or they dont feel anything but for some of us it feels like an actual stab compaired to just a little pinch. The bandage could be so so helpful for communication and soothing when pinpointing an ailment! As crazy as it may seem I remember very vividly the first time Stephanie was able to communicate to her mother and I that she had cramps! We celebrated the fact that she could tell us what was wrong! We practiced bandages and first aid for years with “props” and it really paid off. So much so that now conveniently when we are working on folding laundry and she’s over it , she can tell me she needs Motrin for her cramps and a break 😉💙

    The ace bandage could be a sensory pressure thing. I know for me, when I get migraines (often) that if I put pressure to that side of my head with my hand or pressing into a pillow while laying down, it relieves some of the pain. I've also done this with abdominal pain and nausea.

    • @TheWeeFamily

    When I was a kid I used to cry when I had to get bandage taken off. I found it easier to take the bandage off when I was in the bath. So if you have a real bloody bandage situation try to put Braylee in the tub and the bandage will come off much easier. And no pain. You both are doing a great job.

    • @TheWeeFamily
      @TheWeeFamily  5 років тому +2

      She was being very protective and just didn’t want it off but I know from the past if we leave them longer they generally hurt more to take off. But the bath is a great idea!

    Pressure therapy maybe with the ace bandage? The feeling of the bandage giving the slight pressure might be giving her the comfort. If so, maybe try weighted blankets for times of stress if you havent already (im new here 😊)

Especially the commercial on boomerang where they sing "what are we gonna do with that goofy cat?" My son doesn't talk a lot but he will say that whole sentence without any problems. Also I kind of want to get my sons thyroid checked out too bc he sweats a lot in his sleep too and I had no idea it could be something more serious. I just thought it's because he likes to bundle up in blankets but he will sweat all night even when I go in there and unwrap him and turn a fan on

    OMG.... Can totally relate to Dr nerves. Our daughter hates the Dr, dentist any time anyone needs to examine her person. She is now polite but firm (she is such a sweetheart) which quickly turns into a huge meltdown when we insist....full on fighting to the point where we simply can't hold her still enough to examine. We're on the waiting list for dental surgery under a general. Tooth and hair brushing are our biggest sensory challenges daily. We have tried everything and finally found products that she will tolerate but progress is still painfully slow and for brushing teeth especially no where near adequate. We have to let her find her own way though and wear the consequences because nothing else works

    • @TheWeeFamily
      @TheWeeFamily  4 роки тому +1

      We do her dental appointments sedated now because it’s the only way they can do it that she will cooperate. We still brush her hair, which she isn’t too bad about. Brushing teeth is a struggle. She will do it herself but doesn’t clean them well at all and often refuses to let us help.

    • @cerridwenrowan
      @cerridwenrowan 4 роки тому

      @@TheWeeFamily exactly the situation I'm in with teeth brushing. 3 of the dentists we have seen have told us that she is not a candidate for sedated dentistry, she will fight to her last breath. I've cut her hair into a cut pixie cut and she has started brushing it herself on occasion now there aren't so many knots and we have found a brush she can tolerate on her scalp.

    • @TheWeeFamily
      @TheWeeFamily  4 роки тому +2

      Shorter hair even for kids that don’t mind the brushing is just easier (from our experience). That’s strange that they won’t consider sedation for her. It’s been such a game changer for us in getting her dental work done at all, even just cleaning or exams

    • @cerridwenrowan
      @cerridwenrowan 4 роки тому +1

      @@TheWeeFamily could be the sedation they use here in Australia is different, but my dentist assures me that he needs her to be at least a little cooperative in the first place (which she is not) #1 to administer the gas and #2 because if she is already agitated the gas has the potential to make it worse by taking away what little self control she is using to moderate it. I also know from personal experience that twilight sedation (admittedly a different kettle of fish) makes me aggressive... As in I start swinging and I am the least aggressive person I know usually. Anaesthetics, alcohol, antidepressants and analgesics also don't work properly on me so it could be we just have weird metabolisms.

    With Braylee using the ace bandage, maybe she uses it for growth spurt pains. Maybe? Llama down! I know you didn't see me at the live yesterday, I heard something mentioned about a cd? I came in late. Oh, and I am glad Braylee did so well with the blood draw. I guess the different position helped, even though she was still upset. And I still got to hear her singing! I just love you guys

      She still tried to grab at it with her free hand but she did alright when I held her free hand. It was much less difficult than we thought it would be. Who doesn’t love a pleasant surprise. We have only seen her use the bandage when she gets scrapes/scratches/falls type injuries

    I actually don't mind needles and sometimes, I joke with the person who's gonna put the needle in my skin, that they could put a thousand needles in me and I'd still be okay. I guess, it's because I have a high pain tolerance. It's been three years since I've officially been diagnosed and almost four years (December of this year) since I've unofficially been diagnosed. But 16-17 years since my mom suspected I had autism. I pick at scabs and dry skin.

    If beautiful B’s skin has a hard time with bandaids/plasters, could u try an adhesive remover wipe or liquid?-I have to have a dressing on me everyday/sometimes multiple times a day-long term-my skin gets really angry, & I used to loose skin when I take the adhesive off-but using the adhesive remover, it completely dissolves the adhesive-no pain/skin loss-just a thought!!!

    • @TheWeeFamily
      @TheWeeFamily  5 років тому +2

      Oh that’s a great idea! Will have to look into that!

      The Wee Family the liquid that I use here in Australia is called “Zoff” (it comes in a bottle & made by Smith&Nephew-about $16 AUD-lasts forever if u make sure the cap is on properly)-u just need only 1-2 drops on the adhesive bit of the plaster/bandaid-& it’s off-or zoff😂! U do need to be careful u don’t get it on broken skin, because it is alcohol based-but u wouldn’t usually have adhesive right over broken skin anyway! I use it to take plasters off when I’ve had blood tests too, & it’s perfect-zero sting! Works a charm!! I’m not sure if u can get Zoff where u are, but I did find Walmart has Uni-solve (I think it’s the same thing as Zoff, from the same company, Smith & Nephew) www.walmart.com/ip/Uni-Solve-Adhesive-Remover-Liquid-59402500-8-oz/46108010

    That's crazy. My daughter picks at scratches,bug bites,bumps,etc. She will obsess over them n pick them til they bleed. I keep telling her it's never going to heal n she's getting scars because she picks at everything. My daughter used to smack herself in the leg n say "I'll beat your butt" or "I'll beat your leg". We have no idea where she got it from. It wasn't from us. Luckily she doesn't do that anymore.

      Camille Jauregui I think it’s likely just their personalities. Not saying their not happy folks, but more like dry humor and such. I don’t know if I’d want them to smile more unless it’s natural. It may come off as disingenuous? Maybe lol just bc of their personalities it may look forced or fake if they did. Idk does that make sense?/ I think that was really sweet though that you said your offering constructive criticism in a kind heartfelt way. It always makes me happy when I see people offering advice in a nice way instead of an ugly way. Blessings!!
