When I was in town with my dogs and we encountered service dogs, I called my dogs into obedience and always used the same words: Dog is on duty.
My dogs quickly internalized that after hearing these words the other dog basically vanished into thin air for them.
I was so proud of everyone. One of them was a 1.5 year old husky who had only been with me for six months and had had no training before. His previous owner grossly underestimated a young pubescent husky. Apparently tried to house train the husky by hitting him. At one year old he weighed just 13 kg. This dog had been through a lot since he was born. He internalized it quickest.
But what always warmed my heart: seeing the relief in the handler's body language, the softening of the gaze because you can and are allowed to concentrate on yourself. PRICELESS

My mom and dad read up on autism assistance dogs and got me a puppy to train to help me, plus training him has giving my life purpose since I can’t handle a job and have finished schooling. He’s only 3 months old and he’s already changed my life even tho it’s been hard.

I always loved the family dogs. They accept you for yourself. Absolutely no pressure on you. They only stare at you to make sure you're OK or for a treat.
I've got to the point that I will avoid going out. It's too stressful.

Glad to see someone using 2 service dogs. Truly, when we self train, we probably aren't using dogs fro. Sd bred lines. Psych service dogs have a LOT more challenging working conditions...and having 2 in home have helped them as well as me. And some dogs just are better at different tasks.

Hey! I have (unofficially diagnosed) Autism and have a Service Dog for my PTSD. I constantly get the reaction, "but you're not disabled!" by ignorant people who don't know what they're talking about ALL the time! Without my SD, I would be unable to go into public spaces. I have bad Panic Attacks as well. Without my dog, I would definitely have WAY more hospital visits. Some disabilities that exist are quite real, quite legitimate, but the public doesn't generally see them. They can't see what's happening. That's why such disabilities are labeled "invisible." Not that they don't exist, that others can't necessarily see what's happening! That does not make our dogs any less legitimate! And on social media, people take great pleasure in tearing you down, no matter who you are or what's going on. So, speaking as someone who knows, ignore the negative nancies and do what you need to do to take care of your health! Keep on, keeping on! Be generous and compassionate to yourself. ❤❤❤ TFS

@@holisticleedriven8532 people do not understand that autism is a spectrum not one thing. We have a neurodivergent brain that works differently. I cannot stand ignorant people. You should try to train some tasks that could help with your autism along with your PTSD. I am owner training my 23 month golden retriever as an autism spectrum disorder/Asperger’s syndrome, assistance dog. Some of the task that your dog does for PTSD can’t help with your autism. I do also have anxiety as well when I go out in public a lot of my anxiety gets heightened when my Asperger’s syndrome becomes very challenging in overstimulating environments.

Owner trained service dogs are just as legitimate if trained properly can also be amazing as well. Your dog is doing an amazing job trying to help you! It takes a very special dog to do a very difficult job. I have trained Freja for almost 2 years on my own with the help of my Petco trainers and three group classes.

@nicoledelieto1735 I've been keeping an eye out for tasks that could help me with my Autism as well, but a lot of the things I need for my Autism are needed because of my PTSD as well. I've yet to find something different.
When going over symptoms, they're so similar to my PTSD that we actually thought back to before my PTSD to make sure we weren't just seeing my PTSD. But it's as certain as we can be without a diagnosis. I was called drama queen by my family growing up. My father complained he'd get after me for the same thing repeatedly. I honestly didn't remember! Even after he would cite the examples, I didn't remember. I would take a nap and not remember what happened just before I fell asleep (I believe that actually crosses between Autism and some undiagnosed sleep disorder, based on my research). "Dancing" as a child (that actually summed up to spinning in circles). I enjoyed the way my skirt would fly up (in my mind, like a ballerina's) when I spun. Struggling to learn to read, then becoming a little bookworm. Initially, because I was trying to keep up with my peers! Some called it obsessive reading habits. Not knowing how to put shoes on. I had to flip them upside down (still do sometimes) to make sure they were going on the right feet. Struggling to understand my right from my left, even knowing I'm right handed. Sometimes, I still look at my hand, trying to figure out directions. Little nuances. How do you get SD help for those?
It's my Panic Attacks and sensory overload my dog helps me with already for PTSD (Anxiety alerts, DPT, and working on block and crowd control). So to answer your comment, I've actually been looking for opportunities, but failing to find any I don't already train for my PTSD. That's why I haven't cross trained. Yet! If I do find something, I certainly will. 🙃😉

@nicoledelieto1735 I prefer a dedicated training group to a shop where you don't know the ability of the trainer. Training clubs are more dedicated to training than everything else, too, and are thus more likely to be careful who they allow to train dogs. IMHO, no judgement intended, just my personal opinion. I use a basic training club, getting my CGC and Rally (not competition based, just fun ground work to making sure they have a really good heel!), make sure my dog can pass the PAT, and train tasks with UA-cam videos. Eclectic, but it's what's worked for me.
And my Service Dog was a great dog who was dedicated to her work. Now I'm facing the struggle with a puppy who seemingly has ADHD. She notices I have a problem, tries to help, but is WAY too quick to move on. As a result, I'll have a Panic Attack, she'll alert and ground, but then I'll go catatonic and she'll run off when it would really be better if she would just stay put! She's a work in progress. 🤣

@ I would love to get Freja into an actual training program. Right now, I do not have the funds to invest in an actual training program or a trainer . I have to train Freja myself. I am lucky enough to have two Petco trainers that help me with Freja’s training. I really need to get Freja trained better in public more. Freja has been trained for over a year knowing 10 tasks so far. I trained for it every day. I do not drive,so it is hard for me to get Freja in public more, however, I do walk her almost every day and train at the park by my house in my neighborhood. Freya does have supervised play dates with other dogs, so I can train the neutrality. None taken! I understand how difficult it can be to owner train a service dog. I have done a lot of research on how to owner train an autism service dog. I do not likw that term because it says all autistic people are the same. I say autism spectrum disorder/Asperger’s syndrome, assistance, dog. It clarifies what my challenges are on the spectrum. I feel that the higher end of the spectrum is highly misunderstood and neglected. ADD, ADHD and Asperger’s syndrome are all intertwined on the autistic spectrum. I do show characteristics of ADHD and ADD at times when i am overstimulated or hyper focused.

Great report on your experience, thanks for sharing. I'm also autistic and in the next few weeks I'm getting a service dog. While I'm really excited to have this support, I also see some anxiety about the idea of “not being autistic enough to have one”, can you relate?! The dog, Obiwan, will be donated by an Institute focused on training dogs to help autistic and disabled people, and they know the people and are helping me a lot, but I still get that feeling every now and then. But anyway, I really identify with some of the tasks you showed in this video and I could improve my daily life with some of them, some with others.
It's good to see what they can both do for you (and you for them, as guide dogs have good rewards for helping and working). Please save the videos, it is very encouraging and comforting. Have a nice week :)

I’m new to the sd community and it’s not for the faint of heart. Idk if I have autism but I can get overstimulated, and I can have attacks of dysautonimia, or anything that my body decides depending on the day, so I get it. Ur dogs are beautiful and so are you. I do the tea thing too, like everyday. How did and do u teach new tasks to ur pups?

I have an autism spectrum disorder called Asperger syndrome! I’m training my golden retriever Freja as a service dog. She helps me in the store when I get very overstimulated. I also have sensitive hearing which can cause sensory overload. I have been owner training Freja for a year now.

Hi, do you mind if I ask how your service dog helps with sensory overload? I have sensitive hearing (hyperacusis) and also get sensory overload in busy environments too. I'm trying to imagine how a service dog could help wth that? For now I just avoid most public spaces. It's difficult

    • @nicoledelieto1735
      @nicoledelieto1735 Місяць тому

@ I have the same problem too with sensitive hearing. I am very sensitive to loud noises. Freja provides comfort and space, so that I can walk comfortably. Freja can actually help ground me and stay focus.I also do have depth perception issues ,so when my brain gets overstimulated or sensory overloaded, it can affect my focus in big crowds. I do not avoid public places because I am used to functioning on my own. It can be very dangerous when you have a sensory overload in big crowds. Freja also helps find an exit for me in case the environment gets too overwhelming for me. It is very dangerous and can be physically demanding when you have a sensory overload. There are a lot of different tasks that you can train a service dog to do. I have been owner training my service dog since she was 16 weeks old and we are still working on tasks that I need for her to help me. I have to owner train my dog because I do not have the funds to obtain a trainer or get her into a training program. My dog does not cost thousands of dollars like the other service dogs, but she does come from service dog lines, which I am very fortunate to have her. We still have another year and lots of training to do.

@@StephA21319 Freja can do blocks, which gives me space, crowd control and buffers, behavioral interruptions, where Freja interrupts the trigger. She does alert to the anxiety of the overstimulation. Freja can do grounded tasks, for example, ground tactile and deep pressure therapy. She also does light deep pressure therapy on my feet or on my legs. She does chin rest. Body blocks and watch my back, so she can help with different triggers when it comes to busy crowds. Freja knows how to exit seek. I also have that perception issues when it comes to getting very overstimulated. I tend to bump into people or I forget things. Freja can retrieve the items that I forget. Freja can also find different locations, for example, the entrance to a restaurant. I have been training her for over a year now and we are entering our second year of public access training. Freja also can do a boop or a nudge on me when I get disassociated.

You might explain the major life activities that your autism significantly impairs. And, then the specific tasks trained to mitigate that disability. You are using your diagnosis as the reason for your service dogs. But, they must make your impaired life functions or activities significantly improved. Loads of people have autism, PTSD, depression, anxiety, etc. And, the vast majority of these diagnoses do not significantly impair life activities. They may make life a struggle or hard to do.

Where does it say that a service dog has to make impaired life functions or activities be significantly improved? When I told my manager about an obviously fake service dog that came into where I work, she said all she could ask them is if the dog was a service dog and what service it provided.
People are taking advantage of the fact that it is illegal to require someone to prove that their dog is a service dog... I believe most of the dogs that you see in stores are not even emotional support dogs. The owners just know that you can get away with bringing the dog in.
