cool chickens! Thanks! I bought a '96 4runner limited a while back with 158K miles and NO rust for $1500. It was a vacation ski home vehicle, one owner. As I was doing my inspection, mice had built a nest in the air box. Amazed it ran with all the midden plugging the filter. It was well maintained except the tires were 20 years old and practically petrified even though they still had good tread. Put about another $1500 into it with tires and all fluid changes, plugs and wires and have a great truck now worth about $10-12K. Just found your channel and love it! Keep on keepin' on Girl!
I've always just let the engine run just long enough for the thermostat to open then look in the radiator while giving it some gas. The coolant should drop as the engine revs. If you have a blown head gasket/cracked head/block the revving will push coolant back into the radiator and make the coolant rise instead of drop.
A 4Runner in good shape is a great vehicle. I grabbed a 2004 Tacoma with the V-6 only because the engine was so solid and clean, it is a 4x4 and a 5 speed manual. Starting cold is a must. I was really happy how smoothly it shifted through the 4 wheel drive modes. I like to remove the oil cap and run my finger all around the inside of the valve cover to see if there is a gunk issue. You got a killer deal on Grim. Got my timing belt/water pump kit ordered. I love your pet chickens. Obviously well loved and cared for. I live in an apartment so I have a pet cat. Sky. Best buddy. Great tips. Thank you Faye.
Hearing your preference for a car's age makes me want to kick my used pickup search into high gear. Reminds me of my dad's(he's 60) advice. Thanks for sharing your wisdom!
Ms Hadley has done what most mechanics with their own business have done; find a reliable truck or van from a junkyard for a daily ride. A lot of us have to the same as the prices of good used vehicles are out of most people's range. And you can check them out & get parts right there. Hats off to you.
My grandson is driving a 1997 4Runner I purchased new in '97. It currently has 280,000 miles in it. He does his own maintenance on it. He loves that truck. I'll let him know about your channel.
Biggest issue with 4runners is front caliper pistons freezing. Unless they are used for off roading they are pretty much basic maintenance vehicles that go on forever. I own a 2007 4runner SR5, 100,000 miles, no problems, just oil changes, brakes and tires. Great find, Great video!
Faye you are awesome, I am glad I discovered you. I just bought a used 2016 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. I dont get to be home much only 10 days after being out 60 and its got me nervous having bought it while out on the road, having it shipped home and getting all the tax and other things done only by going home for a day. I inspected the thing pretty good and feel its pretty good but I am on pins and needles until I can take my 10 and look at it some more and drive it around. While looking at your scrutiny of your gem, looking can never replace a serious scrutiny with my car but I do feel better about using a keener eye and a TECH to help with a better inspection. I know about the smoke in the tail pipe and a number of other inspection pts but nothing replaces a good TECH. Anyway, ty for being here I really appreciate you . I think you are smoking HOT! You're doing an awesome job and very knowledgeable. The 4runner is a awesome vehicle. I brought a 84 model when they first came out over here in Australia back in the 80's and now own a 2nd gen RV6 3vze motor which has done 420,000 k's and hasn't missed a beat. The motor has never been cracked open and I always do my service every 5,000 k's and always use the Toyota coolant. The motor is flushed out with diesel and I have a magnet attached to the filter to keep metal fragments out of the engine. It doesn't even use oil or blow any smoke. Keep up the service and they just keep going. Keep up the good work.
First, coolest chickens ever! Second, your editing is getting so, so good. And third, thanks for the great content - such good advice for checking a used car out before buying it. Grim is so lucky that you are his new owner!
AutoZone in CA has freeloaner tools. I got a radiator pressure tester and found a lower hose leak from a loose clamp. The head gasket tester was available but you had to buy the fluid for $10.00. You had some very good advice for the DIY'er. Also, an inexpensive code reader for the OBD2 would be great also. You got a bargain by knowing your stuff. You have Moxie. Bravo!

Another 1k subs after 2 more days, Congrats! You are on your way to 100k. Great info in this video. The Autozone free block tester rental with free test fluid is a single chamber tester. They suggest removing/draining some coolant to avoid contaminating the fluid. It works well and the free price is right in case you need to buy head gaskets from them. Great suggestion to start a car cold when looking to buy. On an impulse I bought a 69 Camaro last year. When I looked at it and later when I picked it up it ran fine, but I didn't know the owner warmed it up for at least 15 min each time. When cold it wouldn't stay running and stalled all the time. Tough to drive a manual trans like this, I needed a 3rd foot. It was really embarrassing stalling it all the time and then flooding it for a no re-start in traffic. Fortunately a choke and idle air screw adjustments fixed that problem, but it could have been really bad. Keep up the great work.
I'm a mech. Those 3.4s are almost indestructible and beautifully smooth motors. Had a off roader that I abused day in day out for a couple of years (4runner with the 3.4) and I was absolutely blown away by the amount of punishment it could take and nothing broke. Now got a 3L diesel Hilux which are even more overbuilt than the 4runner, typical torquey diesel but absolutely gutless.
I am so glad to see a female mechanic with videos. I stumbled onto your stuff looking up tips on changing the 4 runner fuel filter cause I had to change one on my daughters. I do my own work and though most things are straight forward and fairly the same if it’s on a vehicle I always look up stuff to find what is easy. I enjoyed your video and felt your a very cool hip chic. And I am now subscribed to your channel looking at your stuff and will be sending this video to my daughter even though she doesn’t want to be a mechanic. I feel for her to see and learn but more importantly to see another female doing this stuff is very inspirational. Thank you so much for what you do and sharing so that young ladies can look up to you and know they can get their hands dirty and still look beautiful and be lady like again thank you so much!

As a shadetree mechanic, I am really digging your videos. You really think through a problem or potential issues and attack them in a straightforward manner. You have great on-screen presence as well. I am enjoying watching your videos very much. Thanks!
2 thumbs ups up!! and yes I always smell the exhaust... but I am an old guy mech, we did not have all the fancy stuff back when. my dad could just listen and smell and tell you what was wrong with an engine. respect for the vids
Faye, if you're doing a lot of 5VZ timing belts. There's a press tool to release tension on the belt w/o removing the tensioner. Ask your Snap-on guy. Or look it up. (I've done hundreds, works XLn't!)
I hope my daughter is like you your awesome !! I am teachen her all about cars and how to work on them so she doesn’t have to depend on anyone and the best things is she loves it
Your very informative. And your good with Toyota’s. They run forever with minor maintenance. The cooling system pressure test is the BEST way to find leaks in cooling system. Great job.
You’re about to leave Timmy in the dust! Lol. My ‘97 limited has me tuned into anything 3rd gen. Your vids make these trucks much more accessible. Excellent work!
Timmy the Toolman! A wealth of excellent videos specific to our rigs here on the tube. Also geeks out on T4R.org. Invaluable resource like yourself inspiring confidence and power to shape the world with our hands. ~
I use drilled and sloted brake roaters. Never have had problems with them warping. Evertime I used the cheap Iap roaters most of the time they warped. Of course the counter person will tell you the heat doesn't warp them only improper installation. I think their told to say that by the manufacture to not have to cover all the defective brakes.
I know this is older, but first, I appreciate the suggestion (I'm lucky to live close to multiple Pull a Parts), the used car market is bananas at the moment. (I work at a used car dealer and was hoping to help a friend get something that runs.) I went back to school during the pandemic so I don't have a ton of experience, but I was expecting to see you pull the spark plugs and do a compression test for a general engine health check. It'd be good to have a jump box with you too.
I just bought two cars from Pick-n-Pull last month and 08 Edge, which turned out great. 06 Dodge Charger, which also turned out great. I had to rebuild the motor but still Awesome, the one car was able to drive home in an hour. Which was Insanely crazy but cool and the other car had to be towed.
Enjoyed your posting this. Always interested in how others do things, their work & thought precess. (I have a 1986 4-runner I bought in 1987. Love it.) Following you now. Good job. You’re smart & resourceful. I learn a lot watching you. Keep it up!
4Runners for some reason like to blow somewhat of smoke from their tail pipe. My 4th gen does it too but hasn't lost a bit of coolant since I replaced the radiator. Nice purchase 👍🏽
You rock girl a point I would raise is you doing what could be described as a pre-purchase exam . You need one to buy a used car . You also need need a pre-purchase exam to buy a horse . One by a competent Independent mechanic the other buy a trusted veterinarian .
Hey Faye, I recently purchased a 2001 suby outback vechicle here in Australia and just need to do some work in it to get it back on the roads. I really like working on vehicles and really like to see women doing work on their vehicles etc.
Those combustion testers are great. There's a cheap one available on Amazon for like $37 and the refills of the fluid are $11. No tool truck name brand tax needed. Someday I might use it BEFORE buying the car to avoid the sadness that comes with that blue fluid turning yellowish green on something already bought and paid for.
I’m interested in getting a used 4Runner and this video really helped me in figuring out what I should be looking for! Took notes in everything. Thanks!

Also, I discovered your channel this week and commend you for the attention to detail put into explaining maintenance nuances, general commentary, audio/video production, editing, captions, and the occasional chicken cameos. I've always just let the engine run just long enough for the thermostat to open then look in the radiator while giving it some gas. The coolant should drop as the engine revs. If you have a blown head gasket/cracked head/block the revving will push coolant back into the radiator and make the coolant rise instead of drop.

Love the way you express yourself ,is not easy to share the knowledge, many options in you tube but you are one of my fabs. keep up the good work !!
That combustion leak tester is pretty kick ass I never knew Bluepoint made that ! Thank for the info 👍🏼👍🏼
Of course! That's the goal of my channel (and why I watch other automotive UA-camrs) !! I learn so much from watching other people work on cars.
You can get it on Amazon from the manufacturer for like $40
I am so glad to see a female mechanic with videos.
I meant if it’s on a vehicle I haven’t worked on before I like to look stuff up. Sorry got ahead of myself on my post
Wow...just found your channel! Just 2 videos watched, already one of my favorite channels, besides Scotty’s. Thank you for this video and others. Grim is excellent truck, my friend has 97 runner still run daily perfectly, probably runs forever with you taking care professionally .
Your channel has grown significantly in the 19 months since you made this video and I’m sure it’ll snowball from here. I’ve only come across it today. Not only do you know what you’re talking about but you have the best laugh Ive heard in quite a while,
You did a fine job of relaying the information via video. Thanks for the tips along the way.
Autozone rents that kit. They call it a "Block Tester."
Got lucky with the timing too! have never seen the one checker. So cool.
Love the close-up on the eyes, Faye ! Ha ! Also, that's one cool pressure tester kit. I have a Stant kit with a couple of adapters, but nothing like that. Wow !
39.4 now my tv ladie! Keep up the fantastic work!
i think your videos are very decent Faye and let me say i am certianly proud of you i am a mechanic of 35 plus years you go girl you have my support
Most amazing videos I don't know how I stumbled across your feed. But it gives me something awesome to watch. I think we're both about the same age. Cool to see someone doing their thing. Especially being skilled at doing cool stuff cleetus and cars in Houston in a couple weeks. Don't know if I'll make it, but hope you go. Maybe I'll see you there. If not, I'll see you on here. Love your videos.
That combustion leak detector fluid is cool!
Great job.
Remember, a clean engine is a happy engine.
The 3.4L Toyota 4Runner from 1996 to 2002 is one of the most reliable I heard.
Times two. Wise choice. Guaranteed Faye will give the love this 'Runner deserves.
That’s a really reliable engine
You are sure right. Mine is a 2004 V-6, 3.4 L. Isn't that about the precise same engine? Gen. 1?
Awesome Faye!!! Love watching your videos and I pick up a lot of good car tips too!!!
The 3400 engine was one of the best, and still is. Great Job and Great choice.
+1 for researching common problems ahead of time on the interwebs. jbweld radiator, thats a riot!
Wow girl you know your stuff. Oh by the way...thank you for your service
Thanks Faye this summer I will be looking for my son's first vehicle.
I will be adding the suggested tools to my toolbox
You’re about to leave Timmy in the dust! Lol.
My ‘97 limited has me tuned into anything 3rd gen.
Your vids make these trucks much more accessible.
Excellent work!
Who's Timmy?!
Timmy the Toolman!
A wealth of excellent videos specific to our rigs here on the tube.
Also geeks out on T4R.org.
Invaluable resource like yourself inspiring confidence and power to shape the world with our hands.
~
oh gotcha! Well thank you :))
Because of your videos, I'm an amateur mechanic, but I'm thinking about going to school at Portland community college for Engine technician. Thank you
I use drilled and sloted brake roaters.
(I work at a used car dealer and was hoping to help a friend get something that runs.)
I went back to school during the pandemic so I don't have a ton of experience, but I was expecting to see you pull the spark plugs and do a compression test for a general engine health check. It'd be good to have a jump box with you too.
Well you know that 4Runner has another 100k miles of life easy now. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Great job Faye. Keep up the great work!
Thank you!!
Those old 4Runners are pretty awesome and nice to work on. Worst thing about those 5vz engines is the oil filter location.
You rock girl a point I would raise is you doing what could be described as a pre-purchase exam . You need one to buy a used car . You also need need a pre-purchase exam to buy a horse . One by a competent Independent mechanic the other buy a trusted veterinarian .
Great video again! Awesome job. Great tool for combustion gas testing. I've got to find one. Thanks for the tips on a used vehicle.
Great job Faye, glad you got a good running vehicle, always gotta be careful buying used vehicle.Old Grim looks like she in pretty good shape.
I just discovered your channel and I love it. Best to you!
Thanks!
As a fan of 4runners its always good to learn what they need to keep on ticking. 😊👍
Things do go much better when you properly prepare in advance.
Great Find!! There are Many Junk Vehicles with Life & Potential In Them, Glad To See One Saved.. My Daily Driver is a Rescued Wreck, coming on 3 Years Trouble Free...
Sometimes the heater core as well, keep it up young Lady. Your channel is awesome!
Just Came Accross Your Channel Its Nice To See A Women Mechanic Dont See Them Much Keep Grinding 💯
I didn't know about the leak detection kit you have, particulary the gas detection in the coolant, I have to remember this. Good that you can do all those tests before buying Grim, over here they would say you buy it as you see it :-). Great work as allways and cute chickens ;-)
Another great video, I like all of your Toyota repair videos. Very helpful.
You are such an inspiration! I went to school for automotive and i quit because of all the sexual harassment. I'm mostly self taught but i wanna learn more and more. My new favorite youtuber!
AWW thank you!!!! Yeah, that sounds TERRIBLE. It doesn't get much better once you get into a shop.... on the lube rack at least.... but once you get onto the line, people tend to mature a bit....
@@FayeHadley haha yeah. I went to school for my own satisfaction really. To fix my own stuff. Its more my hobby. I have 2 hearses here in (soon to be) dallas. If you werent so far down south I'd bring my 66 cadillac down to have her fixed, I've tried everything and she just dont run right :( Someday soon maybe!
Amazing, Faye! Well done
I miss my 98 Hilux Surf, I should have restored it, but sold it a while back.
I had the Diesel engine model, never let me down. :)
There's nothing like the sound of purring Diesel engine. :)
Another great video. You have a great knack for explaining things. Keep up the great work. I know that's three greats in a row, but it's all true!
🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂
I got one from napa. It was a single chamber. It said to test while the car is running. It saved me a lot of money from damage due to a blown head gasket
I'm a backyard mechanic, enjoy the hobby, fairly capable wrench, but this vid taught me some cool shit! The combustion gas tester was friggin cool! Learning is fun :)... Oh, and the chickens!! 😍😍😍
Faye...I like your common sense/shadetree approach to automotive diagnosis and repair (i run out of daylight and have to break out the worklights also :) )also you seem practical with your spending and convey that to your viewers ---liked and subbed ...
That combustion tester is awesome. I had the snap on one back in 1997 basically the same as the current one. My tool box was stolen 15 years ago and now I am replacing my stuff for back up and home use. Amazon sells the tester for around 60 bucks exactly the same as the snap-on without the blue point name. Just look up UView 560000.
great video good to see a young person working with their hands ,you know your stuff
Awesome Faye, as always ur leading by example Hua!!!!
I like my 4Runner. Bought mine from an individual 100700 miles just finished timing belt replacement water pump changed oil filters air and oil. Changed transmission oil and filter plus got it painted hope I haven’t wasted my money. As I have 6600 in it. O it has new tires and a new battery
Faye, who's covering Lynyrd Skynyrd's Simple Man near the end of the video 16:24? I'd like to hear it start-to-finish. Also, I discovered your channel this week and commend you for the attention to detail put into explaining maintenance nuances, general commentary, audio/video production, editing, captions, and the occasional chicken cameos. Keep up the great quality work. I wish you continued and growing success. I'm the original owner of a 2004 VW GTI VR6. Your videos give me more confidence to do more in-depth maintenance. Is there any chance you might do an in-depth and detailed video on replacement of a timing chain & guides on a 2004 GTI VR6 24 valve (engine code: BDF)? A video similar in depth, detail and quality as your clutch replacement video series?
