      That's awesome!
I'm not a professional mechanic, but I always did my own maintenance with whatever tools I had or could borrow, since I was a kid.
My sister was just like me. I was older, so I taught her how to do things like pump up a tire, or tighten a bicycle chain.
By the time we were riding minicycles, she was adjusting brakes and changing oil without my help.
She's a very successful businessperson today, but she still does basic maintenance herself, because she likes to do things right the first time.

@@bleachinuri Bitter? Did you fail the test?
ASE is required to get a decent mechanics job. So, whether it is a "joke" or not doesn't really matter. And after you get a cert, and it helps you get a decent job, it isn't really just a joke, is it?
Same as my ISTQB Certification. It's a bunch of marketing B.S. But completing that step got me a promotion and more pay.

I'm not saying those guys are wrong because experience is obviously the most important thing but I went to Lincoln Tech and then got ASE certified. You can eventually get enough experience behind you to work up to a great paying mechanic job with just your experience alone or you can go to school and get certified and go to work for places like Union Pacific and get retirement 401K full benefits and unbelievable pay right off the jump because you're certified so Maybe they've gone down a different life path than me but there is no harm in being certified in what you do.

    • @tommyhallum2054

What I left out was I attempted to go to work for Union Pacific before going to school and even with 20 years of experience behind me they wouldn't even give me an interview "in the field I wanted" until I got certified so there's that.

Heya Faye! It's a long time since I have commented, as a mechanic who works in Western Australia, where we have a huge amount of mining vehicles that are Toyota, failures caused by diff and gearbox breathers are very common. Most of the mine spec or even road spec vehicles from Toyota have breathers that are run up high into the engine bay. A blocked one will cause leaks by pressure inside the diff or gearbox housing, as a result of heat, to blow oil past the seals, also what can happen is if the breather is blocked and the vehicle has a hot diff or gearbox suddenly submerged in water, like when we do a river crossing, water will be drawn in past the seals as the pressure inside the casing drops in a quick fashion. Definitely something to keep well serviced in this neck of the woods.

And if it helps anyone the location for the xfr case and front diff (at least on the 4th gen 4runner) are actually located in the engine bay right next to battery - two small vents via long tubes fastened to each other. Maybe these won't require changing as much as rear as they are high in vehicle, but worth a look!

Faye this was something most people wouldn't know about! When I worked on a Nascar team we did this but we used a Catch can and a long tube so nothing would go on the track. We tested for Nascar in 95 and after 30 laps it would build pressure to 20+ psi! These valves are on every rear axle some only have what looks like a plastic cap on the top of the tube and some can be cleaned with break clean with a tube to get into it and also WD40. I know it sounds weird but does work. Hope everything is going good for you

If you go off road a lot or drive a lot in dusty conditions, I put a pipe nipple on it and run a line with a loop in it up to the body. I end it with a fuel filter from a carburated car high up in the body facing down. Now there is no issues with airflow due to temp changes, plus an actual filter to catch dirt before it get sucked into the diff. The longer hose with the loop also keeps water out. Cheap, easy, and works :) Just make sure the line is away from anything that moves and has enough slack for to allow for full axle droop. I have submerged axles for hours with this mod and they never got water in them. The engine was not quite so lucky....

While you're down there replacing the breather, It's fun to hose-clamp a length of quality fuel line to a threaded hose union (I put a bit of plumber's tape on the threads) on the diif and run it up to a protected area. You can submerge your axle and not worry about sucking water into your pumpkin. Not just for 4.-wheelers, but perhaps you need to launch a trailer'd boat or something. Good vid, and important.
These same breathers are installed at least back to 1980s Toyotas, including on the transmission...
Teflon tape is needed to seal out water if submerged beyond just threading in.
Toyota sells 2 versions, one which just allows pressure to escape (and has a seal to keep water from getting in if submerged) like here and one which allows 2 way breathing -- the former is installed low like on the rear diff here and the latter is installed high with breather tubes and just has a filter. There are also diy mods that can be done with tubing and fuel filters mounted high...
Toyota and other car manufacturers also sell nipples that can be used to install extended breather tubes as well...

Seal leakage due to built up pressure does not necessarily ruin the seal, correct the pressure problem, clean up the seal area and monitor the situation, it may take a few weeks to settle down but if it's your truck it's definitely worth the shot to save $.

That breather was more "sophisticated" than I expected... figured it would be just that loose steel cap, and they would call it a day .... of course that wouldn't fare so well if you actually drove through deeper water. Great tip though.... never really thought about it.

Wow all the 1000s of vids I’ve watched I’ve never seen one on the importance of diff vents. Makes me wonder over the years about diff pan gasket leaks now. Ford trucks are my style some Toyota’s. Just checked your channel new subscriber!

  • @desolatemetro

Supposedly there were some issues with FJs when a warm diff would hit cold water while offroading, related to the diff breather. Getting a breather kit to improve the function (and also raise it up where it would stay dry) was strongly recommended to me. Interesting that there's a TSB on them now.
If you want a suggestion for a Taco/FJ/4Runner repair video that would be useful, do one on the (horrible) parking brake generally but specifically on reassembling the parking brake after taking it apart. I successfully installed an SOS performance BBK on my FJ, but had to bring it to the dealer to get the parking brake reinstalled because I absolutely could not get it back together. It comes up online sometimes, so you might get some views on it.

I check those vents everytime I do a service on a vehicle with them. Due to Canadian winters they tend to seize and rust up fairly regularly. I've found with just ensuring they're moving freely during oil changes keeps them open and flowing properly for hundreds of thousands of kilometers.

    • @FayeHadley
      @FayeHadley  3 роки тому +4

Also a good idea to re-route the rear diff. vent, and get it away from the ground. I have routed my vent so that it is behind the gasoline fill.

Thanks Faye....I'm thinking it also applies to my first gen GX - I'll do this as my transfer case and diff service is coming up. Makes total sense - same reason I did my PCV valve. Rather replace while still works that let that puppy clog up and cause leaks.
