      What's sad is the CCS consortium has been discussing (and I assume refining the protocol for) ISO 15118 (CCS3?.... Plug and charge) since 2010, that'll (probably) be about the same time Tesla started on the Superchargers. The "Start-up" devised a system, built the prototypes and built an impressive network within 8 years.

    • @JackMott
      @JackMott Рік тому +3

      @Jonathan Loeppky Battery cells have a minimum voltage, below which they can be permanently damaged. When an electric car is at an indicated 0% charge, the cells are all still above that minimum threshold. Damage is only done if you drive till 0% and then leave it unparked for a long time (days at least but it varies) without plugging it back in, such that it drains to below the minimum voltage level. Leaving an EV parked and plugged in at 1%, 0%, 20%, 10%, is all fine. In fact those low states of charge is where degradation happens the slowest. Manufacturers advise against going below 20% only to avoid accidental bricking of battery packs should you do something unusual like drive down to 5% then leave on vacation for 3 months without plugging the car in, and ruining it.

    The keys to a successful transition to EV's for everyone - beyond the price of the car: 1) Frequency of charging stations, 2) Charging speed, 3) Ease of use, and 4) Charging quality - meaning that it should be easy to connect to the charging station and that it should work properly. That last point seems to be an issue more often than it should be.

      The X (and 3) drivers had no idea what they were doing (vs Kyle who knew everything). The Tesla Map shows the charging speed for all stations -- not utilized even once during the trip. Little or no reason to stop at 150KW stations. Also, to match Kyle's planning -- the X / 3 should have hand-picked each station instead of just going when the car suggested. Kyle would have won in the X, 3, Ionic or Tycan (maybe even the Mach E). Video highlighted a few to me: 1) driver matters; 2) non-Tesla charging stations are still difficult (bad screens, connection problem, slow to start, sometimes broken, have to worry about them being in use b/c there's only a few at each stop). 3) All cars did well on this route and capable of a road trip... and this will get better as more chargers roll out. I just hope all chargers get to the point where they're as easy as Tesla superchargers (plug-in... no screen to read, no buttons to push, no phone / app, etc.).

That trip I maybe would have had to stop twice for gas but may have just been once. Never done that route so not sure how the climbs would affect my range. Absolutely. If you have kids, charging speeds are not a concern at all. Up until the beginning of the pandemic, we were road tripping from the Bay Area to Disneyland about 6 times a year since getting our early 2013 Model S. It charges at 90kW max and we never had to wait for the car to charge. And there were far fewer chargers a decade ago. Sometimes our stops would be 1.5 to 2 hours long because the baby was fussy and refused to get back into the car seat. Sometimes, we would have to pull over to the side of the road for an hour because a kid threw up and another was hungry. Charging the car added zero time to the trip.

Taycan's charging peaks at 250kw between 5%-25% (vs Ioniq 5's 235kw 10%-45%) It's also fairly apparent that Kyle has driven in this particular route and was familiar with charging situation at various charging stations while others weren't. I feel that this race was somewhat pointless in that it tested Kyle's knowledge of this particular route and Taycan, not the charging speed/battery range of all EV's in the race.
