I heard the story this way: BB was searching for the “right” follow-up 45, after his hugely successful “The Thrill Is Gone.” One night at about 3AM, he heard “Hummingbird” and decided this would be it. He called around, got Leon’s phone number, and called, not caring how late it was. He asked Leon if he could record “Hummingbird” and Leon answered “Only if I can play piano on it.” Of course he imprinted his influence in it as you would expect, even to having the girls background vocals to match the background on his original version on the legendary “Leon Russell” album. Both men were geniuses. I imagine they’re playing together now that they both have transitioned to the higher ground.
I remember every single vibration now from then as it passed a minute, not even 10 years. This is the fact: a hummingbird a story has been told. I used to listen to this song when I was little. Now, I'm still in exact time with it.

Great performance and singing by BB on this. I realize Leon Russell wrote Hummingbird but this particular recording seems to have Leon's fingerprints on it from the beginning countdown the piano play and especially the background singers at the end. Anyone know?
Leon on piano and that is also him doing the count-in. He is also credited with arrangements and/or conducting. There is a nice part in the documentary "B.B. King: The Life of Riley" (2012) where Leon talks about this session.
