"There is no true love without honesty, and if your relationship cannot endure that honesty then true love does not exist between you, even if it is a parent" phew!
😍😍😍 I have listened to this video four times now and I really love it. I am reading bell hooks book again. You made me think of something Rumi wrote - “you are not a drop in the ocean. You are the ocean in a drop.”
Thank you for sharing your personal experience with this book! Have you read Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents? I highly recommend it. It's definitely helped me start to heal from my relationship with my parents.
I am so great full that you made this video, posted it and kept it up. I’m so proud of you. I can relate to the pain but I’d rather relate to your courage and vulnerability. God loves you❤️
I come back to this when I think about how collaborative our future is because the point you bring up about relationship is so real. The work is here for us in every convo it feels.
Wow. Thank you for sharing! I can relate to so much of what you talk about. Thank you for opening up your heart and sharing with such honesty and vulnerability. Inspiring! 😍
Sometimes, someone's best is unfortunately, not enough and that seems to be especially true when it comes to parents who haven't dealt with their own trauma. I get what you mean on the dissonance of knowing a parent loves you but also not understanding their behavior towards you that was abusive, or in my case, neglectful. I think we extend grace to our parents because we need them to be capable; our sense of security depends on it. But this doesn't work when the parent is emotionally stunted by trauma so overwhelming that they are unable to even recognize that it's there to begin healing. Knowing just a bit of what my mother went through as a child and knowing all the disadvantages she had when it came to being able to address and heal from that trauma allowed a more sincere forgiveness than just the childish optimism that extended her grace before. I could look on things more objectively and come to a peace about it, though admittedly, this was a painful process. I know you said you hoped to do a "funner" video but I think this kind of video is good as well, if only for the simple fact that someone may have needed to hear/see it to know that they are not alone with what they are feeling and that may be all the difference in them deciding not to make an irrevocable decision. I hope that you can come to a peace about how you feel about your father. And I hope that after recording this, you took some time to care for yourself.
"But this doesn't work when the parent is emotionally stunted by trauma so overwhelming that they are unable to even recognize that it's time to begin healing." ------ Yes, yes, yes!! So very sad, but so so true. And the thing is, my mother has shown me (though she still struggles) its possible for a parent to do better than they did when they were raising you. Thank you for this message! Really appreciate it.
Thank you for being so vulnerable in your reflections. You've inspired me to pick up this book and be honest with myself because love isn't something that comes easy to me. I hope I learn more about myself and life. Please remain strong and know you are appreciated.
This was the first video of yours I cam across, was considering buying the book but as live really remote I like to do a little research first before I order online. Thanks for such a great video wanna reach out and give hugs❤

I started this book today and I’m hoping it helps me on my journey to being a more loving person, to others and myself. 😍
😍 This one hit different. Thank you for sharing and speaking to something a lot of us (🙋🏾♀️) have felt and dealt in the way of familial love
Sucks that this sort of familial pain is so relatable. smh
