Carlos was such a monster player. He is missed and will always be remembered. I totally agree, he was at the forefront of a lot of great players. IMHO he’s definitely one of the greatest players! He blessed us with some amazing recordings that will stand the test of time! RIP Carlos. 😢

Thanks so much for sharing Gary. I love Carlos Vega. Silky smooth groove and tasteful chops. I remember reading about him in Modern Drummer when he was still living. Gone but never forgotten.

Thanks for this Gary. Carlos was a very musical drummer. His playing on James Taylor DVD live in Squabnucket was so controlled and never over played. Did enough to support and drive the songs along. In particular Mexico and Copperline

Got a chance to see Carlos a few times at the Spud and his style was effortless. His sense of dynamics was SO musical. He really understood how to use tonality and volume differentiation to shade the music so beautifully. Such a loss....

Taken from the GRP Live In Session Album.
Such clarity on the production of this Gem.
Really loved playing along to this Album,
I ended up learning exactly what Carlos had played note for note
so as not to get in the way of Carlos.
Iv'e seen Carlos with Lee Ritenour, Royal Festival Hall, London.
Luckily a London radio station recorded the gig for future
broadcast so I ended up recording the whole show when they aired it.
I got into Carlos Vega from around the age of 17 or so.
Carlos has worked along side David Benoit, James Taylor,
the list is endless. R.I.P. Carlos. Love You.

.....Maaaaaaan, I prefer Carlos than Gadd that's for sure but, when I say this people thinks I am a nutcase. Gadd copied a lot of stuff from Carlos and so did Weckl but they never mention that in their interviews. Gadd's playing I always thought is very stiff while Carlos was effortless. Such an underrated drummer but what an Awesome player He was. Thanks brother to pay tribute to one of my favorite players of all times.
    God bless ya.

Awesome hands! My understanding is Carlos along with other well known drummers studied under Murray Spivack and/or Richard Wilson, specific hand technique that differed from the East Coast school of drumming.

😢It's so sad to hear that news. If I had not come across your channel, I would not have known. I was listening to that same solo the other night and felt the same expressions as you even if I didn't know all the rudiments he put together, but I know it was one of kind. Pure artistry. I knew he played with Caldera a favorite of mine. He definitely was a forerunner putting his Latin roots to use.

The only person who is most enlightened and influenced me when I learn to play jazz and funk. The smoothness of transitions, the groove, all of that I learn from Carlos Vega. He made jazz and funk so fun and easy to learn. He got rid of all the complexities and left a spacious room for me to understand the root.

I was a drummer in my high school jazz band in 1974. The Eagle Rock HS jazz band was touring the midwest and played a concert with us at our school.
I was pretty good. Our band won most competitions that we went to - but the Eagle Rock drummer, Carlos Vega, was on a different level than any of us. He was basically a pro, at age 17. I was stunned. Is this how high school musicians play on the west coast?
But Carlos acted like he was no better than anyone else. He told me that I sounded really good. I knew that he was 1,000X better than me and that he didn't need to say anything to me. But he did.
I’ve always hurt for his loss and whatever agony drove him to take his own life.

Thank you for this. I only know him from one of my all time favourite albums; James Taylor’s “Best Live”. Obviously it’s not for nothing that his place needed Steve Gadd to fill it. 🥁🍾❤️

I remember CV being one of my favorite drummers back in the 80s and early 90s--and I remember when he went from Gretsch to DW drums. I couldn't believe it because DW had such shit-sounding drums back then, with crappy reinforcing (ie; drum-choking) rings. Just shit compared to Gretsch tone.
Overall though, CV really got great exposure when he played with JT. They did some HUGE shows then, and I saw them in Madison WI in 1994. Again, DW drums and a Ludwig Black Beauty snare (which sounded amazing). Dude was playing a little 20/12/15/14BB snare kit, and just knocked it out of the park. Incredible drummer, tragic ending.
