Phenomenal ... I saw him perform twice in Newcastle upon Tyne ( UK ) circa 1981 ... Firstly at a Tama sponsored drum clinic ... Secondly at the nearby City Hall with Jeff Beck on the There and Back tour ... Absolutely outstanding !
without question one of the best! I have seen Simon numerous times and have become friendly with his drum tech. I've also had the pleasure of meeting and talking with Simon. One of the nicest cats around. I've been able to stand directly behind Simon as he plays. I'm talking where I could reach out and touch him. His band, Protocol, is amazing, regardless of the lineup. If you get the chance go see Simon live, you won't regret it love the channel, Garey!
What a clinic !, in musicality, dynamics, themes, total control.....like playing a piano. Starting in the 70s he laid down a lot of new ideas and concepts. Just one of those guys that raised the bar. In the last 30yrs a lot amazing players have come along and taken things farther and beyond....always players to keep pushing the boundaries. 40yrs later he still has a real indentifiable character......you just know when it's him playing. I love that with this solo, he doesn't rely on pure blinding chops(and he's got plenty), but more on the basic rudiments. He uses them in a very creative musical way, all around a large kit......not many players do that really. A lot of people don't realize how long he's been around.....he's in his 60s now.
I've seen him a couple of times live and he always stunned me. With his technique , with his sound, with his dynamic and his sheer kindness. Thanks for that reaction! Ps:I would really like to see you react on a solo of Benny Greb!!!
I've just suscribed. It's highly motivating the way you enjoy and live every drum solo. A man who is always open to get amazed and surprised worths every single minute I devote to the Internet. Thanks for your enthusiasm and passion. Greetings from Spain!
Simon is a small guy with a very large kit. Small guy. Big kit. Hmmm. Lol. This guy is a master of technicality and musicality. Years ago (and it's on UA-cam), there is a battle between Simon and Louis Bellson. Check that out, too. What a treat. Thank you, Garey.
The secret is......large cans with tight heads. Bonham had it, others too. Even thin skins ( diplomats) on snare or as resonants..... dont tell anyone.
Saw him at the NAMM show back in around 1990. He and Bill Bruford did a clinic in one of the booths. We were front row for the whole thing...it was mesmerizing!
For my money, the best drummer ever. Yes there may be better technical drummers but for me he's the best. I love the tone of his drums, love his thinking, love how busy he is across the drums, incredible reach and muscular playing, such a great left arm right arm player, and his foot playing is the same. So much dynamics and he can play anything really really well. He can turn it up and bring it down like a huge volume knob. Check his playing on The Who's Sparks live from 1989, it's insane. My favourite drummer ever.
His ride toms are enormous!! Love the depth!! Check out Big Country's "The Buffalo Skinners" album. He was the session drummer on that album. Absolute power!!
I use the Simon Phillips drum program on groove agent in Cubase, and his cymbals sound as divine as when he's playing live, I've used a lot of samples, but this dude captures cymbals as though you are in the room.
Still blows my mind that Simon played on Judas Priest's Sin After Sin album all those years ago. I am partial to his work with Pete Townshend in the early 80's. Chinese Eyes and White City. One of the finest lyrical drummers we have.
My first concerts were Rush and Jeff Beck in the early 80s. Neil Peart, rest his soul, was fast and dazzling. I liked Jeff Beck, but didn't expect his 'there and back' show to be that good. That show was my first for jazz rock fusion, and I never expected to see a force of nature like that. It turned out to be a contest between Beck and Phillips, a rough tie. Simon doesn't do show off solos, but when he just lets lose with dazzling fills, he is equal to no one. I may be old school, but I rank Carl Palmer, Neil Peart, and Simon Phillips as the top 5 I saw live.
Great great mr Simon phillips one of the best! Did you ever did a video on jeff porcaro? I know he did not do solo's but he should be in the list because he ment so much to the music/drumming industry
Since Simon played with Toto and recently Keith Carlock ( my personal favorite.) please react to Keith. He has some of the most unique unusual patterns I’ve ever heard. Just love his style
The way he switches from right to left handed like Ronnie O is amazing and for me the first of those really great drummers I got into and even have a framed signed photo. This was who I was listening to when friends said you need to get into Rush. I never really did get into Rush. Excellent drummer who no longer has a lead hand as he is as proficient with either hand.
Hi Garey really love your channel and all your content! Just wondering would be able to do a reaction vid of one of the recent Steve Smith recorded Journey drum solo's!
The sound here....the echo in parts sound, not like snares vibrating, but almost like a gong. I wonder if the some of the cymbals (china, possibly ?) are unintentionally creating this. I CAN'T be the only one hearing this, can I ?....😎
Thank you for posting a review of Simon Philips. He is one of my favorite drummers as he is so creative and musical, something I don't hear enough of from drummers. I may sound like a broken record but I urge you to check out the Trio Project with Simon and Hiromi Uehara and in particular the song "Move." I don't think you'll be disappointed. Just a suggestion as I have noticed this on a couple of your videos. When you are demonstrating stick grips and things your hands are either too low or behind the inserted video. Just a thought!
Hi Garey! Is there any chance you could do a reaction to anything by Nate Smith? Both his performance for Zildjian Underground and his piece Pocket Change are really amazing. Really a big focus on rhythm and timekeeping rather than fast and flash. Not that there's anything wrong with fast and flashy but I think it's a really refreshing way of playing. Thanks for reading and for all the information and enthusiasm.
I'm fairly certain Simon is right handed. He used to play in the crossover fashion when he was a young man, a teenager I think, but then made a conscious decision to change to open handed. I saw an interview where he said he wasn't sure if he could do it but that he wanted to pusue it because it makes sense from a drumming and a posture perspective.
i wonder how you have all your ears as a teacher! in the studio it was very hard with this unstoppable noise when i was a studio drummer but as a guitarist i have not these problems at home lol

Simons best quality (one of) in today’s arena of playing is his voice (uniqueness). He doesn’t sound like, nor try to copy anybody else.
