we have a kuhn gmd600hd . bought it new 10 years ago. use it for 3 cuttings on 30 acres every year.
never opened it up. in fact, it still has the ORIGINAL drive belts ! just change the cutter bar bar oil every other year ( which is way more than the manufacturer recommends )
get rid of that junk, get a kuhn.

Hahaha I appreciate the comment however all of my new idea mowers I have 3 of them. Are from the mid 90s. Doing 3-4 cuttings a year on close to 400 acres per cutting. I own one piece of Kuhn equipment a double gyro rake. And I don’t ever want to own another piece. I hope your machine was not made with same steel my rake was. It literally breaks apart all the time. Bought it brand new!!

How do you remove the main shaft?

Remove the far end from the cutter bar.
3/8 carriage bolts 1/2 carriage bolts and 1” bolts hold it onto the machine.
Then you can pull out the shaft if it’s one piece. If it’s sectional shaft. You will need to remove the gear boxes.

How hard is it to replace the whole gear housing or rotator housing on the cutter bar. I had two bolt holes bust out that hold the center gear head down

      Not to bad.
Remove the outside end shield. Remove the 5/8 hex cutter bar. You will need to pull relatively hard to remove it. Remove the skid shoe and shield Loosen the 1/2 carriage bolts that hold the cutter bar to the machine frame. Then you can remove the the large double ended hex bolts that hold each gear box together. You really only need a few wrenches. Or breaker bar. Air tool speeds it up also.

@@chadsharrow9269 the one I have too replace is the second one from the gear box. Do I need start from the opposite end remove the end plat and bolts. Then loosen the large bolts that hold the housing I need to replace and slide it apart leaving the other 3 together?

Probably be faster to drop the whole bar out. Remove the far end shields. All the turtles and the lower guards.
Use a couple floor jacks or a set of forks on a loader. Place it under the bar. Remove all the 1/2” bolts behind the gear boxes. And the two 1” bolts at the gear box. Then the whole bar will come out.

Just bought a 5212. One of turtles turn freely. Got it apart. It rounded the hex shaft and looks like the gear is messed up. It a one piece shaft. Question is. Can I get two new gear sets where the hex goes the entire lenght. Cut the old shaft half way between and put in lenght of hex shaft between them?

@@andylonsdorf1294 it will need a new hex shaft all the way and gears. I had to replace a hex shaft it wasn't too bad. I took a price of the shaft to local steel supply matches it up and cut it to size worked perfect been going for 9 years had it apart again when I replaced a section on the cutter bar and it still looks brand new
