  • In this video Doris showcases some of her fabulous tulle dresses and gowns from YSL, Oscar de la Renta, Westwood, and other couture pieces from the 1950s. Tulle is a fabric that designers use frequently in their collections because it is easy to manipulate and layer. The fabric originated from Tulle, a city in France. It was woven in the 1700s, similar to how lace was made. The popularity and the accessibility of this fabric came in the mid-1800s when the material could be manufactured.
Queen Victoria used tulle in her wedding dress, Worth used tulle for Empress Elizabeth of Austria sparking the romanticism that is now associated with the fabric. Besides royalty ballerina tutus are made from the light weight fabric. Tulle is still used today with designers like Giambattista, Molly Goddard, and Viktor & Rolf.

My mother had several paper dresses in the mid-1960s. They were made of a fire resistant non-woven fabric similar to Handi-Wipes that was advertised as being washable. I remember one was in a proto-psychedelic pink and orange print, and another was a silver foil coated dress that was a promo piece done by Reynolds Wrap. She even had a water-resistant paper bikini that you could swim in. I also recall that the Sears catalog had a 2 page spread of 5 or 6 paper dresses, and the headline was something like "You can have every dress shown in these pages for $12.95!". My mother was a big fan of the idea disposable paper clothing, and I recall her saying "I wish they had disposable clothing for children. It would make so much sense.".

How I adore the Vivienne Westwood Dress! Disneys`s newer Cruella feels like someone who would absolutely rock it, it reminded of her immediately when I first saw it.

If I were young enough to marry again, your boutique would be my primary destination to shop for a dress! And if I had a daughter who was going to prom or special event, we would be heading your way for that as well. I LOVE your videos. Thank you so much for doing the research and for sharing so MANY beautiful representations from various time periods and locations. I have learned so much from you. Thank You ❤️❤️❤️

I found the history and use of tulle fascinating. I usually think of nylon tulle and the 1950s, so my understanding was greatly expanded! The dress from the 1920s was stunning. Wow.

There used to be a shop in Glasgow Scotland called Flip. My husband and I would travel up there regularly to buy American clothing. Flip brought over lots of vintage American clothing which we loved. Baseball jackets and rockabilly shirts for my husband and beautiful 1950s prom dresses for me. I loved the cardigans, they were customised with pearls, embroidery and diamonties etc. Making them so individual. I would wear the cardigans with the buttons going up the back instead of the front. Beautiful button were used so many Pearl or mother of Pearl buttons. My mum told me that in the fifties in Britain that you would go to school or work with you cardigan on right way round then you would turn the buttons to the back if you were going dancing. It was just after the war so each peace was made with day and night wearing mind. The back had some gorgeous customised creations oh them. I still have the dresses which I home sewed to fit. My daughter wore a beautiful pale blue trindle skirt and top for her prom dress. She was the only one wearing this one of piece. I love it when an item of clothing traveled from place to place picking up owners who hopefully do the piece justice. Such a lovely way to keep these items sustainable. Thank you Doris. This took me back to a very special time in my life. Why have a compact mirror when you can buy beautifully made compacts which also hold powder and someone else has had joy out of it. Stratton engine turned have some great ones that will decorate your bag with something beautifully made for an extra couple of quid. It a no brainier. The past teaches us so many thing.
