The Way We Wore: Vivienne Westwood Fashion's Luxury Renegade

- Hello The Way We Wore Fans,
This recent upload is all about Fashion legend and activist Vivienne Westwood. This renegade designer has been hard at work since the 70s, creating iconic punk looks for musicians like The Sex Pistols, Bow Wow Wow, and Adam Ant. Besides creating looks for London's punk scene she carefully crafted her own style that reflected 17th century artistic movements of Rococo and Baroque. She has long married English tailoring and French couture technique to give us wild and lavish avant garde looks that we continue to savor every time we see one of her runway shows.

The other day while cleaning her closet, my mom called me in saying she has a surprise for me, AND OUT OF THE NOWHERE, SHE PULLS OUT A VIVIENNE WESTWOOD CORSET ( like the one in white ) IN BLACK, I WAS STUNNED 😂😂😂😂😂😂 we decided to preserve it, and after showing her this series, she loves them, thanks Doris❤️❤️❤️
Diego Aguilera
That’s fabulous Diego. Hipster mom!! I hope she has photos of those days to share with you.
Thanks for watching and happy holidays!
Doris
This is my Dream! Studying, collecting and hunting down vintage designer clothing. People do not respect clothing as art like it should be. Your channel (and Westwood) is one of my favorites! Keep being the coolest lady on UA-cam xoxo

Thanks Daniel. Sounds like you are passionate about fashion. That’s a guaranteed ticket to succeeding I. Whatever direction you decide to follow.
Thanks for watching. Happy holidays!
Doris
My husband is the proud owner of three pairs of the sedition pants as he was a punk. He could never part with them. Thank you for showing us such a fabulous collection.
Thistle DoNicely
WOW! Are you or is he from London?
Thanks for your interest!

The Way We Wore No Doris I live in Scotland right in the middle of Bannockburn, Stirling which is steeped in history. We have Brave hearts William Wallace’s monument out back, Stirling Castle at the side and Robert the Bruce out front. It’s wonderful here. My husband and I used to travel to London with our savings to buy clothes from Vivienne and Malcom shop. We love clothing, not fast fashion and have collected all our lives on working class salaries. I collect compacts, lipsticks and brooches and we love music. From Elvis onwards, it’s been our lives. We still feel 18 and my husband was 12 when his brother took him to gigs. My daughter now wears my clothing and some of her dads and loves music too. In fact she took us to see the Cure a couple of months ago and to a talk with John Lydon in Dundee a wee while ago. I followed you from the Smithodian Channel. I loved it when you found the suitcase full of your fathers treasures. I’m so enjoying the education you are giving us on this channel. It’s just wonderful to see so many beautiful garments and accessories I truly appreciate the time you take to show us a bit of the past because as Vivienne Westwood herself would say, we need the past to inspire the future. Thank you ❤️
@@headron66 your comment is amazing. You sound like you have lived an amazing full and fun life and passed that down to your daughter! My husband is a punk at heart, says he was born in the wrong era. And our dream vacation is to go to Scotland and explore and find his families history!!!!!
I have a long jacket to match
Naomi Campbell and Vivienne Westwood recently had an interview together and they discussed Naomi's infamous fall. It was actually because she was wearing rubber tights in the show and her thighs rubbed together and they stuck together. Extra information in fashion history! None the less, another amazing video!!
Here is the video of said interview ua-cam.com/video/Vl5IVo3EpCk/v-deo.html
Good to know!✨
She's so cute when she's excited. Reminds me of a much loved aunt.
My stomach dropped with the Azzedine Alaïa
my sister have the same Azzedine Alaia leather dress in brown jeans very beautiful
It was the same with me. Utterly fabulous piece.
One of my favorite designers. I love Ms Westwood her designs are always so different and the contruction of her clothes are just amazing. So edgy and funky
🦋The red harris tweed is stunning! 💮❤️💮
If I could time travel, I'd need a Very big time machine just to bring back all the amazing clothes!
Love your channel, Doris! ❤️❤️❤️
Cece Wonderwoman
Thank you for your continued interest Ceci.
If I could time travel ..... I would save a ton of money!! The really great pieces have gone up so much in value.
Enjoy the holidays!

@@thewaywewore7371 So true or even harder to find now. I used to thrift a Long time ago. I went to the Goodwill by the lb. I shed a tear every time I think about the dresses I used to pass up, and that I could get them for a couple bucks!
Thank you for all your wonderful videos and sharing your knowledge ❤️
The Anglomania collection was AW 93/92. Also the red label is sometimes misleading with Westwood. Later it became a secondary line separate to the Gold Label but earlier pieces such as the leopard coat (which I think is actually from an earlier collection - possibly Always on Camera) just indicate that the piece was made in England. Later Red Label production shifted to Italy and became a kind of diffusion line but originally it wasn't.
Isn't Anglomania also a lower end line now...
@@caligulalonghbottom2629 Yes but it was originally the name of a collection. It's taken from the 17th century when there was a rage amongst the French aristocracy for all things English - hence Anglomania. They later took the name of the collection and produced a diffusion line. Westwood has always had problems with labels, every few years they try to organise it and rename the labels but it always ends up confused. Right now they have the Anglomania line, Vivienne Westwood (which used to be Red Label) and Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood (which used to be Gold Label) and there's a Worlds End line.
This red tweed jacket is TO DIE FOR.
Scampi
Hi Scampi. That jacket is available if you are interested.
Happy holidays!
Those Edwardian influenced pieces..stunning
I’ve always adored Vivienne at the time I came across her it was with Japanese street fashion when I was like 14. Than my favourite anime Nana the main characters dressed in Vivienne in the anime and manga, and than S&TC she made the wedding dress. Every single one of my favourite shows or things she’s been apart of in different parts of my life an ages. She’s very universal and amazing at what she does. Come to think of it I don’t even think I own a piece of Vivienne, I probably can only get away with her pendent necklace anyways lol 💖💖💖💖
Thank you!
i sent her my cv on parchment paper and got an interview at her workshop a coverted school on the outskirts of london i was making hats in kent at the time, they gave me a pattern to sew i would be a toille maker for her unfortunately the pattern was so complicated i couldnt understand it the guys in the workshop had been told they musnt give me any instruction and i tried but with nerves as well didnt get the job i waited til i got out and cried on the bus home still crying now. i love vivienne our national treasure and will always thank her for the opportunity which i ballsed up my only life regret xxx
mr biscuit
Hi Mr Biscuit. What an amazing life experience which was not meant to be. What are you doing now?
@@thewaywewore7371 i am a single mum of 2 boys i love clothes iv been a tailor, dresser and costumier i took time off work when my eldest became ill and have just become a retail merchandiser.vivienne gave me the chance in my 20s a smalltown gal x
I can tell you how much I appreciate that you make this information accessible and understandable to a beginner like me! Thank you for making these videos. I rush to see as soon as you've posted and I'm completely engrossed! Very informative and enjoyable!
Marianne Spires
Hi Marianne! I am grateful for your comments - which is exactly what motivates me to do these videos. Thank you for taking the time to write!!
Happy holidays.
Doris
I love Vivienne Westwood designs, no one does a bustier like her. Her designs whether 20th or 21st century are always relevant and beautifully cut. The tulle "explosion" dress reminds me of a dress that I saw Helena Bonham Carter wear to a movie premiere. It may have been sometime between 2000-2007 ?
Mariko True I thought about Helena Bonham Carter as well! I think it‘s the same dress!
I love this channel so much. Such a joy to watch ❤️
I am such a huge fan of your videos!! I could listen to them all day, they get me so inspired and it's so amazing to see someone with such a genuine passion talk about a subject they clearly love! x
I saw Sid and Nancy in Fiorucci way back in the day, Sid was wearing the Sedition pants! I always wondered why he was covering his butt, now I know.
DoN Brewer That is the coolest thing I've heard in a long time 😊✌🏻
For me surprisingly interesting. Doris you look great.
REALLY would love to see a jewelery collection of Alexander Mcqueen or Versace at some day.
Jack Sanct-Johannis
Hi Jack. Sadly I don’t have any McQueen jewelry but we do have a few Versace jewelry pieces. I will put your suggestion on our list of possible episodes.
Thanks la for watching and writing !
Doris
One sleeve longer than the other? Wasn't there a Cosby show about Denise making Theo a shirt like that?
Donna Clayton haha yes I think so that’s so funny 😂
I used to travel to London as a teenager to buy from the Worlds End shop...it was reasonably priced then. Vivienne inspired me to study fashion and she came to my college for a project. I now give presentations to my Japanese fashion students about her. I don’t like a lot of her ( or is it her husband’s) designs but it was interesting to see her pieces here. Note that Boy London acquired the World’s End patterns somehow and produced a collection in their name. I also came upon replicas in Japan back in the early 90’s including the bondage trousers.
I like her voice so much, very ASMR. I could fall asleep just listening to her voice, which is not a negative thing. Her voice is very poise & soothing
Hey You
That’s so interesting. I’ve gotten several ASMR comments. Thanks for the compliment ur the question is are you enjoying the content? I don’t want these episodes to be about me.
Thanks for watching and have a great holiday.
Doris
The Way We Wore ofcourse i love the contents so much, i found you from tv series LA Frock Stars ❤️. You knowledges are so amazing with all these vintage items. It’s just amazing to see all the pieces you’ve collected. And THANK YOU for replying! 🥰
I would love to know what books you have there!
A lot of Galliano’s work resembles her work in the late 80s and 90s
I have a Vivienne Westwood backpack that I bought at the Bicester Factory Outlook in the 90s.
I have a love/hate view of Westwood. I love the punk concepts and the 17th/18th century inspirations BUT theres really nothing subversive about making clothes that only the wealthy can afford...its a bit...hypocritical but I digress. She does have a less expensive line now if I'm correct.
Love your videos. Very informative. I noticed you mentioned the red tweed jacket was from 1987. I think it was from the fall 1994 On Liberty collection. It's a Gold Label, and Gold Label was only started in 1992 so slight mistake there. Also the Raspberry Fur Coat was from Fall Winter 1992 Always On Camera. Don't mean to point out what is wrong but it's always better to have the right information. Great videos. Love them
I adore Dame Westwood, I was an LA punk in 1977 and Granny Takes A Trip on Sunset sold some of the Seditionaries line and it was really expensive even back then alas, so as much as I wanted to buy something I couldn't afford it.
I just adore Westwood, would love to see your McQueen pieces too. Thanks for showing all these, would love to visit your shop at some point.
I remember the Worlds End Shop, never went in but it was trendy to hang around outside as us teenagers did.
So glad I found this video. I’m in London and went to a vintage shop and just purchased a men’s suede, shearling jacket. I was immediately drawn to it, and I can tell it’s vintage, but WOW it’s well made. It was expensive but it’ll last a lifetime
"Maestra" today "class" was wonderful ! this collectives of " Vivienne westwoooooo" are hard to find !
ABSOLUTELY Love your channel........time flys when I watch it❤❤❤
The leather dress is stunning
Hooray! A new video. How about an episode on hats?
I'm completely over the moon that I've just found your channel! I remember that a few years ago I stumbled upod the series you did with The Smithsonian Channel and completely fell for it. Unfortunately, the series is not available in my country, so I just rewatched all the snippets that were uploaded to youtube over, and over again... As you can imagine, I'm absolutely thrilled to be able to spend hours listening to Doris talk about her treasures again
Carrie Bradshaw wore a Vivienne Westwood wedding gown in the movie version of Sex and the City. I didn't know much about her as a designer until I saw that gown.
Laura Falby my thoughts exactly. That gown was lush, edgy and so glamorous.
My Mum Is Obsessed With That Wedding Gown!!
My all time favorite designer. I have my first piece from her this year and couldn’t be happier. Continue to build my collection. Her stuff is ART.
Rest in Peace, Vivienne. Gone but never forgotten.
I love your videos Doris , your voice is so soothing
Thank you Shane. I enjoy reaching out to those of us that share this wonderful interest. I appreciate your interest and thanks for taking the time to comment!
Doris
Hi Doris - just some information - the Leopard print jacket you show is not Red Label. At that time Westwood clothes were made in either the UK or in Italy. The clothes produced in Italy were given a red coloured label to differentiate. Later on the company created different labels such as Gold (semi-couture) Red (diffusion line) and Anglomania (Denim line) because they needed a brand identify and different price points for customers. It's very confusing for people who don't know the brand history and these facts are lost over time and many people look at these early red coloured labels and identify them as what later was branded "Red Label". In a similar way the company also had a deal with a catalogue in the mid-90's to produce a range of cheap Westood clothes - it lasted for about 2 season and all the clothes were given a red coloured label - this further confuses people because they are neither the Italian produced range nor are they red label!
I appreciate your information and when I go I to the store again I will look at the jacket again. Thanks for the clarification!
Doris
I feel like I’m sitting in on a history class except it’s fashion and not WW II... I was a history major lol I love a you tube happy accident 🙂 these videos are great!

Dame Vivienne Isabel Westwood DBE RDI is a British fashion designer and businesswoman, largely responsible for bringing modern punk and new wave fashions into the mainstream. Westwood came to public notice when she made clothes for Malcolm McLaren's boutique in the King's Road, which became known as "SEX". Wikipedia
I wish I was small enough to fit in these things they are gorgeous
Anyone immediately think of the anime NANA when they saw the red jacket?
Yes!!! Such an iconic piece!!! ❤️
I noticed early on you showed a book cover of an excellent must be read biography. It’s academic and not all that flattering in that it’s not biased. It criticized some of the tailoring as things fell apart. But a superb and essential biography. Warts and all. I hope the film will be made. Thank you for this glimpse in to VW. She is adored here in Japan. I see to wear VW neckties to work.
One of my Iconic Designers I love dearly...Get job much love from Texas
I thought I knew everything about Vivienne Westwood, but a certain lady named Doris Raymond has just updated me in a big way!
one sleeve longer than another.... you mean like Theo Huxtables GORDON GARTRELL knockoff?
💮🤍💮The black long sleeve bustier with the red detailing is amazing ~ my favourite piece so far 💮🤍💮 I deeply wish I could someday own it 💮🤍💮
I bought last year in a recycling shop a VW scarf still in it's box for 32 English pounds ,it is soooo soft looks like tartan, probably won't ever use it don't want to damage it...BARGAIN!
I adore Vivienne Westwood💮🤍💮 and I would be the luckiest happiest girl if I can ever own a corset of hers 💮🤍💮
Você fala muito em seus vídeos.

Love the videos. Thank you for posting 👍
thank you so much....
Really enjoyed your beautiful clothes again, always a joy.
Naomi also said her tights where rubber and that didn't help.
Tell the prices of the items your showing as you speak
I love all the aboulous garments, and your voice.
Bringing out the Westwood-Willam Belli
Why do I get this feeling that everyone from the past were skinny? I’m not overweight but that’s how it feels. We’re lucky enough to get any of Nanette Kempners clothing? She was All contour
Heather Gustafson
The average to “larger” (normal human sizes) are the first to sell.
Kemp we donated a huge portion of her couture items to the Met and I believe also to the de Young Museum in San Francisco. I do not have anything that belonged to her.
Thanks for your interest!
Doris
Vivienne is an amazing woman.........she rocks!
Love everything! Wish I had the t shirt!
B Libertine Realm all I want!😩😂
Love the black purse that is up front with the gold hardware! Any info for me?
Heather Gustafson
Sorry Heather. That piece is no longer available.
Thanks for your interest!
Doris
My wedding dress and many pieces in my closet are by VW!!!I have been a VW buyer since the late 80s
Wow Patricia! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Have you been to any of the museum exhibitions?
I went to that 2007 Westwood exhibition at the De Young in San Francisco. It was so amazing. I got the catalog book. They do have good fashion retrospectives at that museum. I have also been to the Saint Laurent exhibit and the Jean Paul Gaultier exhibit there.
Seeing and owning a piece of the fashions is fantastic, even more fantastic is meeting and working with the man behind the machine. I have not met Vivienne, but I did meet, hang out with, and worked with Malcolm in the early 80's. He did a music video with my family that you can find on UA-cam and I am in the video. Malcolm was a riot, unique, and very fashion forward himself. When I met him, he wore 7 hats on his head.
Just came across your channel because I was doing some research on Vivienne Westwood. I am soooo glad I discovered your extremely interesting channel. Thank you for all your information and knowledge :)
looooooooooooooooooooooooooove vivienne westwood.
I have a blouse from 1997, white brocade gold label, beautiful! Black handkerchief skirt, red flared skirt (anglomania) and 2 handbags (1 red and yellow portrait collection) 1 black patent with gold orb. I LOVE Vivienne Westwood!
I remember on AbFab Eddie always mentioning Vivenne Westwood. I’m not a fashonista, as most of my clothes come from LLBean and Lands End, but I throughly enjoy watching your videos. I also quilt (nothing fancy, as I make baby quilts for the local Pregnancy Crisis Center), and just love when you go into the inspiration room. La woman, I’d love to look through your floral prints, it’s like candy to me.
My mother worked as a babysitter in England in the 90s. Unable to afford recent pieces from the collection, she purchased a couple Westwood items that are now family heirlooms from second hand shops: a purple velvet blazer, a cracked gold print scoop neck dress, a pair of large rose-shaped clip-on earrings, and a silver penis necklace. There might be more hidden away somewhere. They were her holy splurges and she taught me to appreciate Westwood's innovative, powerful and whimsical approach. Thank you for these beautiful talks. To quote another commenter, I could listen to you for hours! ♡
Love, love, love this channel. Just subbed. I have a Vivienne Westwood piece. It’s a fitted, dark purple velvet suit (jacket and skirt), puffy sleeves and shiny brass buttons. Bought it at a consignment shop on Mt. Pleasant in Toronto in the early 2000’s. I’ll never get rid of it.
Uggggh. I freaking LOVE Westwood. I would die for anything from the Pagan collection. 😩💁🏼♂️😘
i knew her name for a pretty long time without knowing about her clothing in detail. these past few months though i started watching videos of her 80s~90s fashion shows and really fell in love with her designs. the mini crini has to be my absolute favorite, it's especially beautiful together with the corset and necklace. thank you for the video ^_^
Amazing video about such a creative person as Vivienne Westwood.
"Vivienne Westwood" by Vivienne Westwood & Ian Kelly is a personal memoir and great source of information about life and work of this extraordinary woman.
I love listening and watching your videos! I find it so informative when you bring old Hollywood films and fashion together. I feel that much more connected to the movies I've adored throughout the years with the knowledge you bring. Like when you did the Barbarella and Paco Rabanne video. Please do more of those! Please!! I can't thank you enough for taking your time to do these. You're a absolute gem!
Another one of my faves! Golden inside info from jcdc etc! Love the riding jacket, corset and mini crini =] also the bustier with the frontpiece! That purse from the dressing up collection! That jacket that she wore with the orb on the lucite button! Vivienne said naomi fell because of the latex tights and for curtain call they removed the tights and she didn't fall anymore =] that champagne 3-piece! That alaia, too! Ur tshirt is cute too =] ♡☆ thankyou, doris! Xoxo
All I could say while watching this was, "Oh my god." and "Insane." Thank you for sharing and educating us on the splendor of Vivienne Westwood!
Doris, I LOVE that you give us information on the history of fashion and encourage us to Google and look more into these designers and their stories of why and how they designed items. ❤ you have sparked my interest again in creating fashion looks and reignited my creativity flame!!!!!!!!! Thank you for these amazing videos!!!!!
What a terrific job you have ! Thank you for sharing I am of that vintage and put outfits together like those shown in seventies eighties God bless 🌹🌷🐱🐣🐥🌞🌈
Hi. Thank you so much for your videos. Have you done a video on what kind of stitching methods were used on vintage clothes. Was it hand sewing or machine sewn or a combination of both?
And have you done research on Cristobal Balenciaga's designs and methods of stitching used?
Vivienne Westwood made a series of videos called Painted Ladies which explored the art and philosophy that informed her design when she moved beyond punk 💕 they’re all available on youtube
Interesting to see these beautifully constructed pieces.
My image of her designs is of rather absurd or maybe playful designs.
Thank you. Really gorgeous pieces
Hi Doris, I’m getting married and immediately thought what a great wedding dress that champagne suit would make. What size is it? I’m a size 8 UK
Amazing, Doris thank you and your team so much for doing this show. Wow. Greetings from New Zealand :)
...'with the original CHARIVARI label' and then doesn't say how much it was?
I LOVE Vivienne Westwood. I own four bags, a wallet, two scarves, a pair of shoes and a poncho - my collection is slowly growing. There’s a great documentary/interview about Vivienne on Amazon Prime.
Watched that documentary this morning and it was riveting. Vivienne is such an interesting person.
Doris have ever meant Patricia Fields fro Sex and the City....you two are so appreciate of fashion...
I will be visiting your store in June....LOVE this collection...and more!
