Woodturning: The Galaxy Burl

- Another burl too weird to get by without using resin, and this time I decided to aim for a purple-ish starry night type of color scheme. I am still learning how the color pigments react with one another and with the different long-cure-time epoxies from Total Boat, but this time I definitely overdid the black pigment because the purple was almost drowned out in the end. Ultimately, I do prefer subtle colors to bright and bold colors, as I think muted colors tend to let the wood speak for itself, complementing the natural colors rather than competing with them. It was unfortunate to have lost so much of the gorgeous burl in the process, but I focused primarily on refining the curve of the piece and removing any saw marks or unnatural edges from the final shape.
Let me know what you think of this piece and whether you would like to see more hybrid projects like this one. Also, let me know in the comments what epoxy colors you think best complement the natural wood. I cannot always respond to every comment, but I make time to read each one.
Thanks to Total Boat for the thickset fathom epoxy! This stuff worked wonders and did not crack, even though I poured over 2 liters of resin and an 8 inch pour. As usual, the Starbond CA glue (discount/affiliate link below) came in handy with filling the stress cracks and voids in this burl.

Personally, I think that was the perfect amount of purple, just enough to bring out the sparkle. Love the shape!
Thank you!
That is a beautiful Vase! The Maple Burl is beautiful wood, and your choice of using black & purple epoxy greatly enhanced it.
Great job!!

@@DavidAdamsen well now I am doubly amazed
@@lenelldevereux2284 you’re too kind. It’s well worth the effort!
H E L L O out there in your own StratosPhere, that art places you in your own Idaho. You gave me something for my bucket list. I just hope I get there. Thank You So Much for sharing this. Speechless. That measure of creative is awesome to watch. I once saw a Burl in the woods that was the size of a 5 ft. circle and hanging 2-3 ft. off the tree , I think you need that piece of Log. However it will entail a Special Ops enterprise. Hold that thought, Never leave the drawing board, you Modern Day Rembrandt. We Got This. CAIO for now, Greatest Regards, Big Kev from the Coast, & his bride Karen.
Can’t say enough about your artistic ability and creativity. I’ve seen a number of your videos and I must say this one is a topper!
Absolutely Beautiful Vase,God continue to bless you David..what a special talent.I always loved burls along my hiking trails,Co,Maine,Ny.
Thank you, Karen! Always learning!
I just have to say. I love how you always how yourself honing the tools. Keeping them precision sharp before starting the project. So many people don't know how beneficial this is to do.
Thanks! You're absolutely right.
I love what you do. Thank you for sharing your creativity with us.
Thank you, Iyasin!
Your pieces are always eye aching beautiful, but what caught my eye on this one were the slomo effects when chip clearing the drilled holes and my "Hey! I have the same wall treatment in my shop!" moment. Lol.
This was the coolest thing I’ve ever seen !!! Thank you for sharing this 🥰 !!
What you wood turners do fascinates me. I will never have the equipment to even try this but it makes me ache to remember all the wood I have burned. Love ya.
Wunderschön gemacht 👌👏 schönes Video
Danke schön!
Another great one, David!!! I wish I had your creativeness. You have been truly blessed with a wonderful talent. The turning looks just like the night skies full of distant stars and a Nebula.
👍👍👍👍👍

Mmm…really lovely vase, a pleasing shape, and beautiful wood, and the dark, sparkly resin compliments it perfectly.
Шедевр 👍спасибо за видео, руки у Вас золотые. ✋.
Спасибо! Я ценю это.
Good afternoon, I am a simple person and with few possessions but, even if it were different, I might have doubts about buying works of millions after watching some of your videos and the creation of the most beautiful dreams that the hand of man can create!
The Burl Galaxy could also be said: The Creation of a NEW WORLD inhabited by magnificent beings born from the dream of a single human person!
Congratulations, I would always opt for the dream... this dream created by you!
Thank you, Rubens. But I can't take credit for what God made. The wood is always the treasure I try to reveal.
@@DavidAdamsen In fact, ADAM God created everything and nothing, because all of His Creation has a single meaning, that everything and everyone in every corner of the Universe develop the ability to dream and create, because almost all dreams are full of Love and all who create anything, whatever it is, if it is done with love, it will be to do His will, because love is a dream and the essence of the Creator.
Peace and may your dreams continue to enchant many on this planet
That’s incredible! You sure are a master of your craft!! 👍👏🙏
Another very beautiful piece. I would hate to be forced to choose a favorite.
That is something else you can see the different colours of resin really well beautiful.
Beautiful work, David! I love the colors you chose for this piece, really nice. Always looking forward to your next video, so relaxing and satisfying.
Thank you, Lucy!
Oh my word! Such a beautiful piece of "mother natures" beauty. Would consider being a student to make beauties of nature.
From one turner to another.....absolutely beautiful.
All artistic work requires a special technique, unique to each artist, very good, thank you...
Absolutely stunning!!!! 😍
Thank you!
Watching this is the most calming, glorious form of entertainment. A glass of vino in hand and I'm in my element! Love the artistry of your video production, the music, and of course the process and finish! Who knew this kind of content receives more viewers than most legacy media and streaming shows!! Love it 😍
Thank you!

Thanks Rebecca!
When I see this finished piece I think of sitting at night under a tree looking through the branches and seeing the 🌌galaxy and stars🌠
Beautiful art bro!!! 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Seems to capture the images of the universe.Outstanding.
Вот это дааааааааа! Это......... Я даже не знаю как это назвать!!!!!!!!!!!! Шедевр!!!!!
Thankyou, David. No colour suggestions - I just love to see what you create.
A gorgeous piece, David! I said to myself "That burl will never hold together," when you first started turning. Silly me, I hadn't read any of the description to see it was going into resin. Your fault, of course, since I was too excited to see what you were creating to waste time reading. LOL But seriously, I really like it. As you experiment with amounts of pigment, colors, and even the wait time before pouring, you'll find a solution which gives the results you're looking for.
Side note: Keep your shovel handy. Looks like your area is in the jackpot for a ton of snow tomorrow. Stay safe!
Thank you, Dana! I appreciate your comment. I am constantly in the trial and error stage and am always fortunate to get to project completion with our a catastrophic error.
That’s awesome David! 👍🏻 Thank you for sharing!
Thanks Bill!
beautiful piece, excellent camera work, great editing. good stuff all around. would love to see you tackle some more resin heavy projects in the future.
I completely adore this finished project, though like you I wish the purple came through more distinctly. I think purple is a wonderful complement to most light colored woods...and it's my favorite color
Whew, wow! Amazing !! Stunning. OH man that is sharp.
Hello David this is one magnificent piece great turning, the colour.
Beautiful David you alway that’s just beautiful.
Thank you Sandra!
Уникально и завораживающе прекрасно, как и все ваши творения ! Хочется рассматривать их бесконечно ... Они волшебны !!!
Love it. I have enjoyed seeing you “turn a sows ear into a beautiful silk purse yet again! Keep sharing your creations!
The way you display your masterpiece at the end is fulfilling ... Great job 👏
Thank you so much!

Actually, with this type of wood, as would with cherry, I prefer to see darker colored resin. I am partial to cobalt blue.
