Woodturning: The Cracken!!

- This piece of Ash was one of two cookies I cut from a fallen tree here in Maine. It is the adjacent piece to the cookie used as a centerpiece for the cake at my wedding this past summer. My goal was to keep this piece as natural as possible, cracks and all. No epoxy, no gap filler, other than emergency use of Starbond CA glue (link below), which seemed necessary in order to prevent the piece from disintegrating. Somehow, this piece stayed whole, but it was quite the stressor. I hope you enjoy the final result. It is rather rustic compared to my prior turnings. If you are interested in purchasing this piece, please reach out to me through my website (link below).

I have an oak nut bowl that belonged to my grandparents, probably from the 1930's. My grandparents kept it full of unshelled nuts along with a nut cracker. Thank you for showing me how it would have been created, although I imagine the technology is much different today. 🧡
This is stunning. How beautiful ,I can't imagine the pleasure of creating a piece of art like this, and to think in the very old day they made wooden bowls by hand. The old bread bowls, and here you are creating new history to pass on.I am honored to be able to watch a true artist on video.Thank you .
Thank you, Patricia!
End grain brave choice .
Good work & very sharp tools 👍
Love these videos they’re calming and the work is beautiful
This has got to be the biggest most beautiful peice of art I've ever seen turning a piece that big is dangerous and you made something like that without hesitation well done its amazing
You're brave. I'm glad you know what are you doing. Beautiful piece. Thanks for sharing.
Sorryz for my English...
Congratulations to you both ~ may you be forever happy with one another!! Need I add I am also impressed by your work? Thank you so much for sharing the journey with us all...
Once again you have created a masterpiece. I am so lucky to view your videos. I thoroughly enjoy watching these. It does interrupt my housework though.
I have an antique wooden bowl from my great-grandmother that measures about 24" across. She would make her bread dough in it. At one point it developed a pretty significant crack, so my grandfather filled it with some kind of resin and put in a few brass staples to stabilize the crack. It looks pretty bad-ass! 😎
It's been retired from bread-making...I have it on my coffee table now, filled with glass fishnet floats.
I'm middle-aged but one day I will have a garage where I can make real good quality furniture.
I love your video. Incredible!
Beautiful piece sir! And congratulations on your wedding!
The splits add a bit of character, job well done!
never the same, never predictable, always beautiful.
That is a BODACIOUS ice cream bowl! I love the grain of the wood.
Your videos are always such a pleasure to watch. You demonstrate such artistry as well as impeachable tool presentation and use! But it doesn’t stop there! Your videographer is also and amazing artist!! Thanks you!
Thank you very much, Amy!
I can’t believe some of the stuff I see/subscribe to on UA-cam. This is so professional and beautifully. The music. The camera and editing wrk. And the wood turning it self. Thank you for the time and effort David. It’s well worth the wait. 🇺🇸👍🏼❤️
Thanks so much, Jodi!
Good job my friend 👌👍👈
Great to see you again.
I love how the Nut Oil enhances the already wonderfully gorgeous colours !!!!
Beautiful work. I just re-started wood turning after being introduced to it in high school. The crack hopefully does not spread and the wedding centerpiece idea is amazing.
I'm amazed it turned out so beautiful. I didn't think it was going to stay together.
Love the grain in it. Beautiful piece as always David.
Thank you, Carl!
Wonderful piece with each of the cuts in the wood. A masterful execution 👍🌹🌹
Thank you!!
I love it. Beautiful bowl
As always, a great job, congratulations.
Essential oil’s, I guess we want a relaxed Kraken, lol. Still a beautiful piece, open cracks and all. Like the Liberty Bell
Very nice video. I really like the cracks in the piece. It give it such a unique character.
David,
Nicely done! Great upload as always.
I knew you were going to do something absolutely marvelous with that piece of wood and that wasn't genius I mean absolutely ingenious
Beautiful work, as always.
Stunning as always!! 💛💛
Again, a great pice. Thanks for sharing!
A work of art. The natural edge is just gorgeous. I love it!
Most excellent turning!!!
Beautiful bowl.
Just a thought, have you ever considered mixing the shavings, particularly the longer shavings rather than the dust, from your woodturning in with some epoxy resin and turn the resulting block. I think you could get a most interesting work of art
Thanks Neil! Yes, I've actually seen this idea put to the test before and with some interesting results. Might be worth a try at some point. We'll see!
Awesome. I’m slowly watching all your older vids and watch with interest your new ones as they come out. You are truly an artist! Do you call it your workshop or studio, for I’d call it your studio as that’s where your pieces of fabulous art are made.
Great bowl!!! Well done!!! I think that those big cracks opened more while you were turning it!!!🙂 Nicely done!!!!
It was really difficult. I didn’t want that the centrifugal forces to tear the plate!
You did it. And it's beautiful.
Thank :)
Wonderful work, I love it. A very difficult piece for its size. Congratulations
This came out tremendously well. I love your work and the knowledge of your tools; it’s inspiring! Bravo!
Beautiful rustic piece. I like it. 👍
Another amazing piece of art! I would be terrified turning anything with a crack that size in it. Well Done!! Please keep the videos coming. Love your work!
Congrats on the wedding :) beautiful woodwork as always!
That is absolutely stunning and a true master of the lathe.
I would have put some bowties in the crack myself, but only through fear of it coming apart.
Well done for seeing it through.
Ww
Wow,beautiful piece.
I wished for the big cracks to be filled with clear epoxy, but this is taste. Overall, very nice piece!
...let lose, the 'Cracken'!!! I like it, cracks and all...
I would so love to make something like this, its just utterly stunning!
Nicely done. Quite grand.
Really nice work again my friend!
Y'all's website looks good!
Kraken is a good name for this piece. Nice job!
Congratulation sincerely !! It's a very beautiful objet !! Very good work !! Good day and Hello from France !!

Ahhh. And the Broken becomes Beautiful. Well done.
David, you are so talented! Your work is amazing, truely inspirational!
welcome back
Beautiful, David. I can see, though, why it was so stressful turning it. Take care.
Bill
Beautiful sir
Beautiful 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Beautiful
Some👀SEE👀 a BOWL. I ENVISIONED a ONE of a KIND CLOCK that I would GLADLY DISPLAY with a HUMOROUS ENGRAVING calling it....... "THE CLOCKEN".
That turned out awesome David! 👍🏻 Just found your channel… think I’ll stay!🤠 Thank you for sharing!
Llllllllllllllllllllĺlllllllllllllllllllllĺĺĺlĺllĺĺĺĺlĺĺlĺllpĺlpĺĺĺlĺlĺĺĺlĺlĺllĺĺlĺĺlĺĺlĺĺĺlĺĺĺĺĺĺllĺlllĺllĺllllĺllĺllĺllĺĺllĺlllĺĺĺllĺllĺlĺĺllllllĺĺllllllllllĺllllllĺĺlllĺĺlllĺlllllĺlĺlllllllllllĺllllĺĺllĺlllllĺĺĺllllllllllllĺllllllllĺlllllllllllllllllllllllllllĺĺlllllllllllllllllllĺĺlllllĺllllĺllllllllllĺĺlllĺlllllĺllllllllllllllĺllllllllllllĺllllllllllllllllllĺlĺllĺlllllllllllllllĺllllĺllllllĺllllllllllllllĺllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllĺllĺlĺlllllllĺlĺllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllĺlllllllllllllllĺlllllllllllllllllllĺllllllllllllllllllĺlllllllllllĺllllllllllĺllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllĺlllllllĺllllllllllĺlĺlllllllllllllllllllllllĺllllllllllllllllllllllĺlllĺlllllllllllllllllllllllllĺlllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllĺlĺllllllllllllllĺllllllpllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllĺl
an awesome piece for a big piece as it is
One of my favorite parts is watching you sharpen the gouge (chisel?) at the beginning.
You’re turning and videography talents are both without peer, David. Great video! 👍👍👍
Thank you, Gord! I appreciate that. Always trying to improve on every video. Wish that translated to more frequent videos but sadly not… 🤷♂️ ✌️
A crack like that easily could be filled with wood in the most creative of ways, that broken bowl is going to break some bodies wallet and heart😉
You are correct that a wood filler would an elegant solution, but this piece won’t break anyone’s wallet. It’s already spoken for.
I am in AWE of both your talent and your creations. 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
Thank you!
Very nice show🔨
Wicked turn , bro! She cracked, but what an outcome! Them fancies down on the island would pay an arm and a leg. Im still lookin for a chunk of wood I found out back the barn.
Great view, thanks for sharing. I think I counted close to 75 rings of growth, is that even close?
Very impressed it stayed together and stunning result.
How often do you resharpen your gouges when doing a piece like this? Does end grain need more or fewer trips to the grinder?
A very nice serving platter, although I don't think I would use it for liquids. Thanks for sharing
👍😁🇨🇱🇺🇸
Absolutely gorgeous, as are all of your turnings! Ash is so beautiful!
Thank you!!
Looks nice.
That was good
I love me a big old wooden bowl! This ones a beaut! Glad you left some live edge. And glad to see a video from you!! 🙂
Hey David,
I guess this bowl turned out what it was “cracked” up to be. I think this was one of your largest turnings, if not the largest. While watching the video I kept thinking there was going to be a chunk of wood flying off into space. I’m glad it did not happen. In the end, the cracks added character to the turning. Good one!!!👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks so much, John. Yeah, that was a constant worry! I think the piece is still almost 20 lbs. It was probably around 50 lbs or more when it started.😬
Wow David! That's a beast. I was holding my breath all the way through about those cracks. Turned out great in the end though.
Well turned!
Thank you Bryan, yeah that was a stressful turn.
*Excuseme* 🙏🤝
David, once again another spectacular masterpiece! Well done. Bravissimo 👍🏼⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Its refreshing to see a crack not filled in with epoxy and turquoise
Una obra de arte, maravilloso!!!!💖💖💖💖💖
Thank you!
Very nice
Truly superb and impressive!
Would it be possible to know the tomek sharpening settings for your first gouge?
Brilliant photography of a master artist at work!
It is always such a pleasure watching you work. Thank you!
Wow this looked frightening most of the time. And your lathe is amazingly stable!
Thanks and yes it was really stressful some of the time. That's Robust ftw!
That's beautiful. I was looking for something else. This was awesome.
Amazing work, David! 😃
Really beautiful piece! It's a work of art!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thank you! Same to you!

Absolutely stunning David
