Woodturning: The Phoenix Burl! 🔥

- Watch until the end to see the bonus pieces!!!!! The star of this video is charred burl that was salvaged from California after a wildfire. It is either Manzanita or Madrone burl. I don't usually go for thin walls, but I have seen this concept done and was curious if it could work for these pieces. A few of the blanks had saw marks, which meant I had to curve the walls and move the center to ensure complete natural edge around the piece. As might be expected, the pieces turned out fairly delicate and also rustic at the same time! This video is lucky #30! Let me know what you think!

Yes, I'm back! On November 5, 2020 before sunrise, I was climbing a tree to my deer stand when I lost footing and fell about 25 feet to the ground. I woke up 20 minutes later thinking I had taken a nap under the tree for no apparent reason. I soon realized my back and right hand were broken, specifically my L1 vertebra burst fractured and my right index metacarpal broke in 5 pieces. I was able to walk about 100 yards out of the woods to my friend's waiting canoe and was taken to the hospital. God was very merciful. I could have become paralyzed or worse, but I am slowly getting back on my feet and hoping to make the best of 2021!
Thank you to all who wrote such kind letters and left such encouraging comments on my videos. Thank you also to those who donated to my paypal. Unbelievably stunning. Absolutely Gorgeous pieces.
Very glad you are back David. Sorry to hear what happened to you. Glad you have recovered from it all.
You haven't lost your touch. As always David your work is perfect.
Thanks Carl. There’s always more to learn!
It's wonderful to see you back and well. Your videos have been a source of peace and refuge in these trying times. The adventure of watching a beautiful creation emerge from a formless chunk is entrancing.
Hi David....first....very happy to see your return and that you appear to have recovered fully....I sincerely hope you are well! Second....these pieces are stunning of course for your craftsmanship, but also for the rescue and reuse and the remarkable color (probably a product of the fires). Additionally, creating a live edge bowl is no walk in the park....check out the fine work of Chad Eames who makes it look easy. Lastly, I was born and raised in California and built a house in the Santa Cruz mountains.....this stock appears to be madrone as manzanita is very twisty and usually not as dark...but, I could be wrong. Best wishes and good health my friend.
Thank you! And you must be right. I’ve done a little research and wasn’t sure but i figured someone would be able to confirm it as madrone burl. Cheers to you!
I've lived in California for over 30 years, been through numerous fires, live in Lake County, just a couple miles away from several of the largest fires in history, and watching you turn that charred wood into something so beautiful literally choked me up, I have several pieces of burnt wood from the fires, I think it's beautiful too!! Well done, great works, I love them!
Cheers Jessica! Thanks for watching!
Glad to see you are back making incredible works of art. I am glad that you recovering too. Keep doing what you are doing 👏👏👏👏
Hi David. I am deeply sad to hear of the accident you've been through. But absolutely glad to hear that with God's grace you are well again. It's so nice to have you posting videos again, considering you are one of the finest artists in wood turning I've come across. Take it easy. Don't push the hand more than it can produce and gradually you will be back at 100%. Lots of love from South Africa. I'm a huge fan. Take care and God bless till the next exciting project.
Thank you so much Deon! Cheers from Maine!
So glad you are ok! I am in awe of you and your resilience! Also the beauty you have wrought from ashes! Thank you for being you!
Thanks Jennifer!
Fantastic to see you back Dave, and oh boy are you on form! Stunning wood and stunning creations.
Thanks so much! ✌️
David, what a blessing to see you turning again! A year ago I had surgery for a severely torn rotator cuff and during my recovery my wife Beverly gave me a wood lathe for Father’s Day. While in therapy I began watching turning videos on UA-cam, and was blessed to find a gifted young man named David Adamsen making beautiful works of art from beautiful wood made by God - Awesome! I love your turning skill, info and choice of music; I have watched every video several times, and learned much. One day late last summer I’d just turned on one of your videos and our grandson Nathan scooted to the TV & began to watch. That may not sound unusual, but Nathan was born with Down Syndrome and Autism; he is non-verbal and although he is full of laughter, hugs & happiness, at 12 years old, he usually lives in his own little world to himself. Nathan rarely looks at the TV at all, but he was enthralled by the motion of flying wood chips, the sounds of turning & the beautiful music all together - he watched the entire video, laughing & waving his hands - and has since watched many. We have videoed Nathan watching your videos for 45 minutes to an hour at a time, and would like to send you a video of him watching you. My name is Bill Minson, I am a retired pastor in Tyler, Texas, and last fall when we saw no new videos from you, I feared you’d met with some tragedy (accident, Covid - didn’t know). The Lord prompted me to begin praying for you, and I’m so glad He heard the prayers (of many - I’m sure praying) and blended you to survive and recover from your fall. I’ve bowhunted for over 55 years and know the dangers of treestand hunting! We pray the Lord will continue to bless you to use your talent to bless many - we and Nathan are watching, God bless!
Wow! Bill thank you so much. That is encouraging beyond words! Thank you sincerely for your prayers! God works in mysterious ways, performing His wonders. That is amazing about your grandson Nathan! I’m so happy he is able to enjoy the videos! Thank you for sharing and definitely feel free to send to me via email adamsen.david@gmail.com. I look forward to it!
Oh and happy turning! ✌️🔥
Once again, you have left me in awe. Very well done, David. I am so grateful you are recovering from your injuries. I came to find your videos while recuperating from being partially paralyzed. God is indeed merciful!
Thanks Linda!
Awesome piece! It’s like you took something that most all thought was destroyed and gave it new life! How beautiful!! May we all see the possibilities is something or someone we think has been destroyed.
Glad to know you survived your fall and the injuries you sustained, but that you have been able to return to woodworking. Great to have you back!
Such glorious pieces! Words cannot describe them adequately! 😊
I’m in awe as usual, such artistry worthy of a museum or gallery. I’m so glad your healing and back at it (for selfish reasons) you are my favorite wood turner to watch. Take care and God Speed. 🤗🤗🤗
Thank you Tracey!
Good to have you back! Take care and don't overwork yourself.
Gorgeous woodworking as always!
Thank you! ✌️
Praise God, prayers were answered and you are back, once more, sharing your beautiful gift with us!
Thanks Margaret!
Beautiful and charming works of art. The craftsmanship that went into these creations is superb. Welcome back to the work you do so well, Texas is watching with amazement.
Thank you so much Paul! Cheers from Maine!
These pieces are exquisite, breathtaking, your best work ever. Very glad you're back, may you continue to heal.
I too greatly missed your videos as no one else has the style and grace that you bring in your videos . Great to have you back. Thank you for sharing your experience .
Thanks so much! ✌️
I am so very glad to see you back to woodworking! I was watching Kim's video when she spoke of your accident and was certainly relieved to hear that you were recovering. You are certainly one lucky young man! Amazing job on these two new pieces. 💜
Thank you Tracey!
Phoenix from the flames, it echoes so beautifully with your own experience! We survived the Paradise Fire (Camp Fire, they called it) in 2018, thank God for His mercies. This is truly beautiful.
What could I tell you that you haven't been told thousands of times already... Your works are absolutely beautiful, luxurious and very original. I find myself wondering which would be my favorite and until now I couldn't tell you why I have to watch many more videos. But I tell you that I am a genuine admirer of your talent 👍🌹🌹
Beautiful! A great tribute to the many that lost everything ( my Brother included ) in those terrible fires!
Take care, Dave
So sorry you had an accident, I am so glad you are well enough to turn again. Awesome piece💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
I’m not one to leave comments on every video I see, but ... you made enough of an impression on me with this clip that I felt compelled to do it. What an artist you are! Also, as some have already mentioned, your explanations and close ups make the action jump at you and enjoy it so much more! Well wishes with your recovery and keep them coming!
Thank you Rafael!
Wow! I love how you preserved the dignity of the original tree. Outstanding piece!
One of the only turners on the planet who turns about 5 times more air than wood. 😉 Artistry, videography, and technique are all amazing.
Thanks!
Gorgeous. What was meant for destruction only brought out the beauty in this vessel.....life lessons brought out by the hands of a craftsman~ Hope you're healing well! Glad to have you back!
I am grateful there are people who can see beauty in what others say is worthless or ugly. Thank you for showing all that good can come from bad.
Outstanding, David! Glad to see the only thing you lost was turning time. You certainly did not lose your touch turning wood. It is nice to see that you have recovered nicely from your accident. The scar on your right hand should fade quite a bit over time. GREAT TO SEE YA BACK TURNING WOOD!!! From my vantage point, prayers were answered.👍👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thank you John! Glad to be back!
Crazy Mad Skills! He literally took 4 pieces of trash wood and turned them into 3 beautiful works of art!!!
Beautiful pieces. Rescued wood. It brings back Precious Memories of camping in the desert with my husband and his parents.
Merciful in deed, so glad you're back and well. You're loved and admired by many...
Welcome back, David!!! So thankful that the Lord preserved your life, your back, and your hands. “His mercy endures forever”. Absolutely beautiful work! This reminds me of Tolkien’s poem, “From the ashes, a fire shall be woken”... It is as if you have woken a flame within that scorched wood...it positively glows. Well done!!
Thank you so much! ❤️
Prayers from Texas for your continued recovery David, and thank you so much for the beautiful work that you share with us in these videos, you are truly gifted.
Thank you so much!
Welcome back! Awesome piece and congratulations on your recovery! Something else I'm starting to notice is that while your piece is great, your video editing and presentation is also fantastic. I gotta think that you put just as much effort into editing as you do creating your woodwork.
Thanks Ross!
After watching you turn the lidded dish I thought I couldn’t be more impressed, but I actually gasped out loud at the draped edge bowl. All three pieces are stunning. Incredible talent.
Thank you Mary!
All the adjectives seem to fall short of your insanely magnificent art. Beauty from ashes.
Thanks I appreciate that. ✌️
Whatever He asks you to do hereafter, do it. You are still with us for a reason.
We've been waiting patiently for your recovery David. You are my all time fav UA-cam turner. Such a fitting piece for your return. There is something bright and beautiful hiding inside that charcoal and you brought it out. God is good..
Thank you so much!
This piece just takes my breath away! Yes, it is that beautiful! It is a stunning piece of art! I’m so glad you left the bark on since this wood was in the California wild fires. I believe you paid tribute by highlighting that beautiful bark! Bravo!
Thank you so much!
The burnt parts really add class to these items. Well thought out use of that wood. Very attractive results
Welcome back, David! You never cease to amaze with your talent. Those pieces are just exquisite, and I love the charred edges! It's great to see that your recovery went so well and I hope your back is also feeling a lot better. Your videos are always beautiful, keep them coming!
Thanks Lucy!
Very glad you were able to recover from serious injury; in the woods, a whistle and phone / walkie-talkie can be good insurance; walking, as you did.... Aaaanyway : love your videos; and really like hearing both soft music and the lathe.
Thank you so much!
A spiritual journey reflected in molding God's wood into another reality. Not bad; not bad at all! Thank you for sharing.
All the pieces are gorgeous.
Thank you!
It is a joy and a huge relief, to see your talent at the lathe again! I prayed for your recovery, not only for you personally, but also for the return of such an artist, who manages to convert a lump of wood into a thing of beauty to such an incredible standard.
Thanks Beverley!
Glad you’re back! You were missed.
Cheers Larry!
It's so good to see you back! What a perfect piece for your comeback video. I hope you continue to heal. Take care!
Hell of a way to make a comeback! That's a stunner!
Edit: They are ALL fantastic!
Cheers Kerri!
So pretty and I’m glad your back
Thank you!
The color on that is absolutely just gorgeous! Never knew how gorgeous scorched wood could be. I am constantly surprised watch you and some of the other wood turners I watch.
Dear Mr David Adamsen,
I have been impressed by your history and by the way this project of yours was born,
in conjunction with your original way of interpreting the whole.
Thank you for your testimony and art, take care, I send you a warm greeting from Switzerland
BEAUTIFUL! Stunning. Such beauty and unexpected form to come from the ashes of such devastation! I was there. And to watch you and the magic of your hands and vision is a joy and actually gives hope that sometimes no matter how bad things appear there is a force, or higher power at work that we don’t see until it is there before us. Thank You!!💎
What a fabulous piece (pieces), I am so glad you’ve healed and are able to return to using your gifts and sharing them with us all.
Thank you John!
I’ve also broken my back recently, I hope to be able to return to the lathe when I’m able.
It’s good to see you back in the shop again. Setbacks always lead us to a better place. God is good.
These are stunningly beautiful. So very unique. And you are right, God is merciful and good!
Congratulations on your recovery!
I imagine this also could be a surgeons hobby because the surgeon requires very steady hands and so does this.
These videos are so calming, I watch them as I fall asleep, oh, and my cat likes them too.
Thank God for your recovery. Many Angels were on your side. So happy your back with us and every you do is beautiful!!! Thank You
So very thankful you are doing as great as you are glad to see you back! Amazing work! God isn’t done with you yet! Neither are we!
Wow. God is good indeed. In so many ways. Thank you David for sharing the good news!
Yes He is! ✌️
O Happiness to see you back and turning again!!! Missed you, hope all is well!! Cheers!!
Thank you Robert!
You really do have a knack for getting the most out of great materials. Great instincts, wonderful work!
By far the most extraordinary work to date because of the history in the material and your eye for design! I would love to see videos of all those abstract bowls. 😍
These beautiful things may be loved reminders to those who lost trees and homes to the wildfires as they replant and rebuild. God help all of them.
From the ashes comes beauty. Gorgeous work.
Cheers!
I am going to watch this later today, but I am excited...it has been 3 months since your last upload! Great to see you back, and can't wait to see what you come up with this time...
Cheers Eric! I hope you enjoy it!
I am so glad you have recovered following your accident. Don't worry- your woodturning skill is just as good as it was before the accident, maybe even better!
I have deep respect for your art as it moves me to a peaceful place of beauty unimagined.
Wow thank you Robert!
Happy to have you back, we missed you, and the inspiration you share with us.
Thank you so much Lorraine!
Hey, happy to see you again! It's fantastic to know that you have recovered from your fall :)
Thank you Miguel!
As a Firefighter I’v always felt pain for the homeowners we responded too when putting out their home fires but always found beauty in the burnt wood left behind. Now that I’m a woodturner & I’m retired from the fire service I find joy in watching videos like this. You are a true artist & I hope be as go as you one day.
....🇺🇸GrUmPy🇺🇸....

An angel was watching over you! Glad you're back ,now no more tree stands! Stay on the ground and keep turning.
Great to see you turning again David. I’m ready for those private lessons. Lol 😂
LOL thanks Mark!
David, your video work is the best I’ve seen on UA-cam! The bowl is beautiful too.
Rick! Thank you my friend! ✌️
Thank you... we are blessed by your work and by the gifts you've been given. Yes God was good as to you still alive and able to continue. You've been given understanding... the very tools are a different blessing... excellent ones. The creativity... your eye and skills... to see and bring the beauty out of the very wood. Even the woods you've worked with... again thank you for sharing these blessings with us.
It appears you haven’t missed a beat. Same wonderful craftsmanship and attention to detail. Beautiful. And most importantly, glad you are back turning and healing. Missed seeing your awesome videos. Take care.
Thanks so much Mike!
David, I’ve missed seeing your beautiful creations. So sorry to hear about your accident, it hasn’t effected your stunning workmanship though. Fantastic to see you back. Love from Australia 🇦🇺 Gorgeous dog David!
Thanks so much Sue! Cheers from Maine!
The pieces & the maker, both risen from the forest floor. Splendid job!
I love that you left the burnt tip on the finial. What a beautiful thing to have made from tragedy. Thank you.
Thank you! ✌️
At the end only realising how much I've missed your work!! Love it! Love it! Love it!! Absolutely amazing pieces!!!
Thanks Robert!
Oh, wow...that is so gorgeous...I am in awe! Welcome back...I am so glad you have recovered and are turning again!
Love how you left the charred top on the finial. Nice idea, too, on the design.
I see the deep meaning in this set of pieces. A phoenix rises from the ashes to continue stronger. The charred and "alligatored" wood that is the material and the artisan who has risen from the ashes of his injury are kindred spirits, and the result of your painstaking efforts are an expression of the renewed strength and duration into the future surviving such adversities create in us.
I am truly glad you are healed and back in the workshop, creating such artistry and sharing it with us, and thank you for sharing what happened.
Thanks!!
Welcome back! Way to bounce back from a horrific injury and still make beautiful wood turnings
These pieces are just gorgeous and realizing we could have never seen them is scary. I am following many wood turners, many do great things but you have that special artistic eye and touch which makes all the difference. Watching you working is the promise of something special and always calls for a « Wow ». It is never just another bowl, it is always a piece of art. You deserve to be better known and have thousands of subscribers.
Viviane, thank you so much! I really appreciate that! ✌️
Truly Beautiful! What you create is more inspiring than any painting. Its like your pieces are alive.
Yes!!!!! What a way to come back!
Cheers Brad!
Almost looks like the wood literally captured the flames inside with that color and gloss!
😍Was für eine wundervolle Holzarbeit! Schön, dass der Algorithmus mir das Video nochmal vorgeschlagen hat.
Very, very nice. That turned out really nice, just love the wood and the way you made it come a live. Thank you for sharing your video.
Thank you Mark! ✌️
Yay! You're back! Oh my goodness Dave! God has bigger plans for you. Thank God you're well bringing us inspiration and beauty through your artistry. God bless!
