After 3 years of using a under display fingerprint I much prefer the scaner to be in the lock button, they are pretty fast and pretty reliable when you are wet or have dust on the hand.
For those specs, at that price point it is hard to compete. I just go that "beta" Nothing Phone (1) for $300. Not exactly budget but compared to the other phones out there, for 8GB RAM + 128GB storage it's really hard to beat. I'd love to see more budget phone reviews because I think it's a market that's sorely missed here in west.
Ok two things lol I have never seen this guy but this is one of my top short circuit episodes I liked his style. Now second he said the pictures looked pretty solid but appeared to be a completely different ethnicity in the photo on the phone lol. Either way looks like a solid phone for a younger kid that maybe prone to breaking phones or a parent like mine that literally send 10 texts a day and the rest is phone calls/google searching a quick answer.
What features does a $1000+ dollar phone have that this doesn't and would you actually use any of the extra features. Why wouldn't this be a phone for your average smartphone user? Just interested!
Additional two things I would care about in a phone is repairability and custom firmware support. Would be nice to see at least some hints to those in reviews! Simple answers would do: does it have a glass back panel? Any screws around the case? What are the steps to unlock bootloader?
Xiaomi midrange phones with snapdragon probably has the best custom ROM support this one is mediatek so nope it won't have that good. Bootloader unlocking is very easy for all Xiaomi phones the only thing is the first time you do you need to apply for it and wait for 1 week The back is polycarbonate, do you mean like actual literal screws sorry I am confused lol, it's a simple process to unlock the bootloader as I said a 5 mins yt vid will help you Hope I could help.
One absolutely important thing to note about an IR blaster. A lot of places, in Greece in particular, do not offer aircon included in the hotel room price, so you would have to pay a few euro to get a remote for yours. BUT if you have an IR blaster on your phone you will be able to use it for the AC unit!
I buy a new phone every couple of years and usually go with whatever the current Moto G is, for around $200-250 simply because they are the definition of "good enough" but I am interested in something a little better in that price range.
You can unlock it from table if you add index finger fingerprint, Gorilla Glass 3 is maybe less scratch resistant but it is more drop resistant than newer gorilla glass, the dynamic ram is 6+2GB because it uses 2GB form storage which is slower.

Just a heads up. For those looking to buy it for T-Mobile, well it won't work. If it's not a "US" based phone, the IMEI won't register it with the carrier. It might have to do with the Xiaomi phone us policy type deal.
I got the Poco M4 Pro 5G as a testing device and have been extremely impressed with it. On T-Mobile it does get at least some 5G service, and otherwise works well. The thing that really can't be emphasized enough is the price. This is a $200 phone. The screen is bright and clear, the speakers are loud, the camera (which absolutely does have plenty of compute behind it, even if it's not got the experience or optical quality of a Pixel phone) is decent, expandable storage, a headphone jack, and enough specs to generally run smoothly. Poco does an amazing job making a $200 phone that doesn't have any obvious compromises. It's worth also noting, though, that their phones are in general quite good, and just a meager bump in price gets you actual more premium specs with a similar value proposition.
@@Thedude897 Yeah, I didn't want to pay for my headphones until it dropped in price on Amazon to $115. And I probably won't buy another one unless it's in that price range. On top of that, I only have $10 Skullcandy headphones that I bring with my laptop. Even if I get some much nicer in-ears someday, I would want decent Bluetooth in-ears for $100 at most
@@Thedude897 no, Airpods are not $240 USD (I assume that's the currency you're using given your use of the term "bucks" though I guess CAD isn't out of the question. If you do mean CAD then you can ignore this whole thing.) The most recent version of regular Airpods are $180 USD. Jake, the host of the show, said very specifically that he did not mean the Pros, which are $250 USD for the latest version.
@@moldyshishkabob I bought my Sony WF-1000XM3's (the in ear true wireless headphones, not the over the hear WH-1000XM3. I hate Sony's naming scheme) for $60 USD refurbished. At that price I'm half tempted to get one as a general purpose camera for streaming things like cooking and sculpting. Throw some IP camera software on it and you don't have to deal with a laptop (and maybe external webcam) to get what you want, just set it in a mini tripod with a cheap adjustable phone holder.
side fingerprint scanner are the best... just add another finger to use it on the table. It's way more comfortable to just use your index finger on the side than on top of the phone and also it would auto unlock as soon as you press the side button.
Great review except, why take photos in portrait mode? Surely landscape would give a better view of the image as well as reducing the need to zoom simply for full screen image playback.
actually, tons of phones cost less than AirPods. though that says more about AirPods than about the phones. 60Hz screens are a feature, I always turn the screen to 60Hz and I wouldn't use anything more unless it has the fancy feature that dynamically adjusts the refresh rate. Battery should be the number one priority on mobile devices, I wish phone manufacturers would focus on that than battery draining 'features'
I'm watching this video on a Xiaomi POCO X3 Pro which cost me around 200€, it's incredibly fast with a good IPS display and a battery that lasts for longer then my memory of when I last charged it! Good phones aren't getting cheap, but cheap phones are getting good!
Fingerprint reader on the side is actually my preferred placement for a fingerprint reader. It doesn't prevent you from using it when your phone is resting on the table since you can just touch the side as naturally as touching the front, and an external sensor is always going to be faster and more accurate than an under-screen one. Used to have a side fingerprint on my Sony Xperia (forgot which model), switched to under-screen on my Samsung Note 10+ and there's been a lot more annoyances for sure
I have a redmi note 8 pro whIch I bougth in February 2020. It still works perfectly and has a good 48mp AI camera and a 4500mah battery. I paid $170 for it.
The "dynamic ram" actually uses your hard storage to "expand" ram. It's like swap space (linux) or a pagefile (windows). On Samsung phones this is called "Ram plus" and actually has reports of it slowing down the phone, so people just turn it off.
Albeta's 5G coverage is fairly extensive and i use it all the time. I barely notice the difference between being at home and being on a hill watching UA-cam (other than the data saver settings I keep enabled)
The Dynamic RAM is 6 + 2 because its actually RAM 6GB. The extra 2 are storage destined to work as RAM if needed, but with much lower speeds since it isnt RAM but a UFS memory chip
Bought a Poco X3 Pro in April 2021 and a Poco F4 in August 2022 (X3 Pro got stolen in June), never had any issues, no complaints about the Poco F4 because they fixed the two major issues with the X3 Pro, the camera and the screen, I'm loving my Poco F4 now and I'm certain it'll last me a long time, 10/10 would recommend
One thing to take in mind is that these phones have adds. Yeah... You can avoid them easily, but they are there, specially in the pre instaled apps. Like fie explorer, themes, background, stuff like that.
litle thing unmentioned in this video, it has front and back light sensor, so if you like to use your phone while lay on the bed, the brightness didn't decrease automatically, because behind the phone is brighter
This phone is a rebranded Redmi Note 10 4G (India) which I own. Except the processor (Helio G95 vs Snapdragon 680) and the primary camera (64MP vs 48MP). The Redmi Note 10 launched at about Rs. 13000 (about $160) but is now available new for $135.
I love the fact that Xiaomi puts macro cameras on their phones. I don't use my camera often, but I think from the times i did use it, I've used the macro camera the most. Taking apart electronics with little progress pics, to know where all the screws go, has never been easier! Just as handy as the IR blaster. Also, did you put genshin into 60fps mode? I haven't seen a single phone that doesn't default to 30 at first.
I strongly prefer side fingerprint scanner over in-screen. It's so akward to unlock while you're holding the phone, which should be most of the time you're doing a phone. In-screen maybe easier to unlock your phone on the table but you can also just tap to wake and use facial scanner
Rocking a redmi note 9s myself, cant wait for their new phones with snapdragon gen 2, the gaming performance is looking insane good with this new chip as somebody reviewed today.
My college spent millions of pounds rebranding and getting TVs everywhere, I turned off all the TVs with my S6 Edge IR blaster and when I finished college a year later they were still turned off. It's a useful feature to have sometimes (I'm not edgy, but I was doing an IT course and our computers were absolute dogshit and the canteen prices were ridiculous for a public college, and I spoke with the Headteacher when we went to a Microsoft convention and she literally said "We have no money to upgrade your computers", meanwhile they bought like 10 holo lens for the engineering department and spent millions on what I can only believe to be a money laundering scheme, look up Milton Keynes college and you will be presented with the worst logo of all time)
I have a Umidigi Bison GT Pro (8+256 non 5G) and it goes 3-4 days for me on a full charge, has a ton of features, is ultra reliable, great cameras, great screen, ip ratings and all the normal things you'd find on a far more expensive phone. My 3rd Umidigi now and they've all been really good phones, the Bison was about GB£280 when I bought it but prices vary, especially if you buy from Aliexpress or Banggood.

I don't trust their software / brand anymore.
Him: Just don't drop your phone and your camera is the most important.
Me: We are too different, this relationship will never work.
After 3 years of using a under display fingerprint I much prefer the scaner to be in the lock button, they are pretty fast and pretty reliable when you are wet or have dust on the hand.
I just wish they supported them longer.
Another CCP-phone? It phones home when Xi wants. No, thanks 🤮👎
I also want a xiaomi 13 pro for 200$
Change ROM :)
Still rocking a poco f1
@L. G. I rocked my redmi note 4 for 4 years, it was always as smooth as new.
He's usually the guy who's voice you hear from off screen
What features does a $1000+ dollar phone have that this doesn't and would you actually use any of the extra features. Why wouldn't this be a phone for your average smartphone user? Just interested!
Additional two things I would care about in a phone is repairability and custom firmware support. Would be nice to see at least some hints to those in reviews!
Simple answers would do: does it have a glass back panel? Any screws around the case? What are the steps to unlock bootloader?
Xiaomi midrange phones with snapdragon probably has the best custom ROM support this one is mediatek so nope it won't have that good. Bootloader unlocking is very easy for all Xiaomi phones the only thing is the first time you do you need to apply for it and wait for 1 week
The back is polycarbonate, do you mean like actual literal screws sorry I am confused lol, it's a simple process to unlock the bootloader as I said a 5 mins yt vid will help you
Hope I could help.
I could listen to him all day
Forgot to add something about ads everywhere and an insane amount of data harvesting despite any laws trying to prevent it
I've got myself the M4 Pro 4G and it honestly is amazing. a 10th of the price of a flagship with all the same specs
Yeah Moto Gs are good enough. I use one.
You can unlock it from table if you add index finger fingerprint, Gorilla Glass 3 is maybe less scratch resistant but it is more drop resistant than newer gorilla glass, the dynamic ram is 6+2GB because it uses 2GB form storage which is slower.
3:40 Amazing advice! Honestly, game changing - you've completely changed my life, thank you Bell!
Yeah, how stupid of me to drop my phone on purpose, had to watch a video to learn that it's not the way to treat a phone.
*Poco M5s* is a Rebranded *Redmi Note 11 SE (Indian Variant)* which itself is a Rebranded *Redmi Note 10S*
• *Redmi Note 10S* announced on March 2021
• *Redmi Note 11 SE* announced on August 2022
• *Poco M5s* announced on September 2022
Just a heads up. For those looking to buy it for T-Mobile, well it won't work. If it's not a "US" based phone, the IMEI won't register it with the carrier. It might have to do with the Xiaomi phone us policy type deal.
Damn !
Honestly a 60hz phone screen isn’t the worst. And I believe IPhones only recently surpassed 60hz on the iPhone 13
Finally someone who cares about the product their showcasing on Short Circuit
It's worth also noting, though, that their phones are in general quite good, and just a meager bump in price gets you actual more premium specs with a similar value proposition.
this new faces in the Linus Tech Tips Multiverse is extraordinarily impressive. love it.
The "plus 2GB" RAM are basically just SWAP memory, a bit of flash storage reserved for times when the actual RAM is filled up.
There are many phones that are priced lower than airpods
TIL idiots pay 240 bucks for headphones. I thought they were legit 60-100 bucks.
@@Thedude897 Yeah, I didn't want to pay for my headphones until it dropped in price on Amazon to $115.
And I probably won't buy another one unless it's in that price range.
On top of that, I only have $10 Skullcandy headphones that I bring with my laptop. Even if I get some much nicer in-ears someday, I would want decent Bluetooth in-ears for $100 at most
@@Thedude897 I paid $20 for a really nice pair of tws
They have ANC and pretty good audio. Having tried Airpod Pros, they are technically worse, but not by enough to make it worth the price premium.
At that price I'm half tempted to get one as a general purpose camera for streaming things like cooking and sculpting. Throw some IP camera software on it and you don't have to deal with a laptop (and maybe external webcam) to get what you want, just set it in a mini tripod with a cheap adjustable phone holder.
loving this guy! Have him on some more please, very quick to the point. Thorough and seems like a great host for short circuit.
Wow he did really good. Not sure if it's his 1st video hosting but it's the 1st time I've seen him. Seemed very natural. Nice.
I would like to see a video where you revisit past flagship phones that's been refurbished and how they are holding up today.
side fingerprint scanner are the best... just add another finger to use it on the table. It's way more comfortable to just use your index finger on the side than on top of the phone and also it would auto unlock as soon as you press the side button.
Love seeing Bell on camera and the set looks awesome!
Great review except, why take photos in portrait mode? Surely landscape would give a better view of the image as well as reducing the need to zoom simply for full screen image playback.
Wow, Bell did an incredible job hosting this video. Would love to see more of him in the future.
actually, tons of phones cost less than AirPods. though that says more about AirPods than about the phones.
So are other earbuds from different companies.
Bell's voice is soothing. He should do these more often.
The "dynamic ram" actually uses your hard storage to "expand" ram. It's like swap space (linux) or a pagefile (windows). On Samsung phones this is called "Ram plus" and actually has reports of it slowing down the phone, so people just turn it off.
Glad to see Bell in more videos. Love Dan but there is something about Bell's voice in the background on WAN show that is just enjoyable.
Albeta's 5G coverage is fairly extensive and i use it all the time. I barely notice the difference between being at home and being on a hill watching UA-cam (other than the data saver settings I keep enabled)
Just finished watching the A53’s review and now we have another budget phone? Awesome.
This guys voice is great for this. Soothing AF lol bring him back for another segment for sure
You don't have to pick it up to unlock, if anything it's more convenient than the inscreen one.
Pro tip for sidemounted fingerprint scanners: register your index finger, too. This way you don't have to pick it up from your desk.
The Dynamic RAM is 6 + 2 because its actually RAM 6GB. The extra 2 are storage destined to work as RAM if needed, but with much lower speeds since it isnt RAM but a UFS memory chip
His delivery was surprisingly high in quality. Loved his voice!
Hey, nice music editors. Seriously comfortable mix with his voice.
Finally! Bell on a proper video =)
if you need an android phone for something, such as app testing, this is definitely a great, cheap option
2:05 facetiming my mom on the Poco
Bought a Poco X3 Pro in April 2021 and a Poco F4 in August 2022 (X3 Pro got stolen in June), never had any issues, no complaints about the Poco F4 because they fixed the two major issues with the X3 Pro, the camera and the screen, I'm loving my Poco F4 now and I'm certain it'll last me a long time, 10/10 would recommend
Not liking the text on the back of the phone is a missed dbrand opportunity
The 2GB extra "RAM" is just swap partition.
Fun fact: The M5s is a rebrand of the Redmi Note 11 SE which is a rebrand of the Redmi Note 10S
I would like to see a transparent phone with certifications and other technical info printed in huge noticeable type
Hey Bell... You should try your luck in audiobook industry... Its incredible rendition ability that audiobook industry is missing out... 👌👌
I like going over budget phones! Please more!
What a bedroom voice you got there. I can sleep while this video is playing when im not watching. Since the voice is so soothing lol
0:22 why was I expecting "is this segue, to our sponsor"
I love the fact that Xiaomi puts macro cameras on their phones. I don't use my camera often, but I think from the times i did use it, I've used the macro camera the most. Taking apart electronics with little progress pics, to know where all the screws go, has never been easier! Just as handy as the IR blaster.
Also, did you put genshin into 60fps mode? I haven't seen a single phone that doesn't default to 30 at first.
i wish affordable pocophones had snapdragons like they used to in 2020-2021.
6:10
It's not a "dynamic RAM system", those extra 2 gigs of RAM are reserved from the phone's storage, it's like a page file on PC
