    If you're only talking form factor, then it's the compactness and the folding. While it's folded, the phone is far less prone to damage to the screen or even the phone itself. Most of my usage of my phone is in my pocket. Listening to music or a video or something. When I have it out the folding mechanism lets me stand the phone up on it's side for full screen, or like a laptop even. I only see this as benefits over a candybar style phone. They compromise this however by having weaker hardware and software limitations.

    1:57 the Z Flips have bumpers as well. The bottom corners are a littler more rubbery, which helps with grip, than the rest that is a strip of soft plastic material like you see on the bottom of mice. Honestly, I think the Z Fold is a much better use of foldable display tech. When closed it is a full fledged candy bar phone, fits in your pocket, has front facing and rear facing cameras, etc. And when opened, not only is the screen huge, but the OS behaves like an Android tablet, supporting tablet versions of applications that can toggle effortlessly between opened and closed and some supporting partially open "dual screen" layouts. I loved classic flip phones in the early 2000s but I see no objective benefit to folding a candy bar phone in half. I would rather flip a candy bar open to twice the screen size.

      @@du3lmaul3rs50 I just have 0 use for a small, square tablet screen so a fold has no extra utility to me, besides being unwieldy and having a weirdly sized screen on the front.

    • @du3lmaul3rs50
      @du3lmaul3rs50 Рік тому

      @@FinneasJedidiah I'm not saying it's for everyone, I'm just saying that it offers more than a Flip does. The use case that most enjoy with the Fold is for people who want a tablet that fits in your pocket. I use mine for 3D modeling and sketching plans for my woodworking projects. It supports tablet versions of Android apps which is very powerful to have in your pocket rather than previously in a purse or backpack. And the fact that the screen is not widescreen when opened is actually a benefit if you've ever used one, because it is one hand holdable allowing your free hand to use a stylus instead of having to be sitting down at a table to use your tablet effectively. You can still use the keyboard whether one or two-handed in either portrait or landscape orientation and when you're done using it as a tablet, you just fold it back in half into your candy bar size phone and the applications effortlessly adjust back to their Android phone layouts. So no it's not for everyone, but for people in creative spaces who find unexpected moments in the day to get some designing done without having to lug around a larger tablet or laptop, it is fantastic. I can also see the same technology being used for folding tablets that open up into large displays similar sized to Windows surface all in ones. The Flip maybe more nimble for some people with pockets that can't fit a normal candy bar phone these days, but it's usefulness and innovation pretty much ends at that one aspect. Both should exist, but objectively the Fold offers much more even if you personally don't benefit from having or using one yourself.

    As an electrician my job involves climbing around in high places or through narrow spaces some times, so if you like having a bigger phone screen but your job or activities risk a big phone getting damaged in your pocket like I do these are a pretty good solution.
    As an alternative to the flexing screen fold though I think two screens that come together with minimal or no line in the middle might work too. Kind of like how you can hold two pieces to a cracked mirror together and make the line disappear. That but smooth and what ever type of hinge would work.

    So I've been using the Flip 3 for awhile, and I do have to say there are some things I like about Oppo's design here. The rubber bezels seem to be designed to eliminate the huge gaps that the Flip series have which lets *soooo* much dust get in and dirty up the screen. And while I don't necessarily think the external display needs to be that much larger, I will say that the portrait layout they opted for is much better, as it lines up more naturally with the internal display and means that you get a more accurate representation of what you are shooting. I tended to find with the Flip 3 that the external display would cut off what was actually being captured because when you held the phone on portrait, it would be displaying in landscape, and vice-versa.
    On a different note, when you were shooting with both displays active, it weirdly looked like the editors had gone in and superimposed the image onto the external dispaly. The external display seems to pop in a way which makes it seem like not a part of the phone.

So it comes down to the person when it comes to pocket carry or purses. I still stand by the benefit of a foldable that is fully functional opened or closed and that offers a hybrid phone/tablet experience is more beneficial than folding it smaller with less functionality just to fit in some pockets. Personally, I think the Z Fold 4 is almost the perfect size device, it is narrow enough when folded to fit in anywhere a candy bar phone should fit (modern car phone slots, for example), It has the hinge feature for sitting it at any angle using either the front facing or rear facing cameras, when open it is still one hand holdable and not only accepts the stylus but the OS has special stylus features that are usually only found on Android tablet devices, and the user has the option to use two different home-layout profiles for "phone" and "tablet" modes which leverages more functional flexibility rather than trying to force the user into one hybrid layout interface which in other devices in the past has been a disappointing experience (older version of Note sized devices). I do think there's room for both, but I would be lying if I said that both offer the same level of innovation and future potential for changing the game. Recently Samsung Display had a showcase of research and development folding and "stretching" displays of all sizes and variations, which most took the Z Fold approach of extending the displays instead of collapsing them. Some of these showcases could very well end up becoming actual products. So at the end of the day, I am just trying to say that I find this much more exciting for tech than a Flip style display that doesn't offer anything new other than fitting into some smaller pockets. (I'm still glad the Flip exists; more options are always better than just a few).

    Women are really into this form factor, especially in Asia. It's compact, easy to put in the pants pockets, easy to customize to make it looks cute. The biggest issue that may benefit from this form factor is that women clothes tend to have the small, nearly useless size of pockets. This is the form factor that doesn't sacrifice the big screen for the smaller overall size.
    And sometimes, when I don't understand something, I don't say things that feel like it's stupid. I found the regular form factor phone is unnecessary big, but I don't think it's stupid or anything.

So I guess there's a good market for them, personally I don't need any of that so I wouldn't buy it, I'm still waiting for a model that unrolls to a bigger tablet-like screen because I think it would help to avoid the crease of the folding models, we'll see

Once you get above 6 inches it's unsusable one handed outside of a one handed mode imo. Having used the Jelly 2 phone occasionally I feel the out screen would be completely usable for the applications I mentioned. Imagine if you had no screen in the front, and had to do something that would've been quicker without opening the screen like check the weather; calendar; media control; etc.
    Its similar to smartwatches. It does what your phone does, but in a pinch.
