46100 'Royal Scot' Reigns Over Dainton - The Great Britain IX - 2016

  • The 'Great Britain IX' The pinnacle of British steam railtours makes it annual return for the ninth time, though if rumours are true, this could be the last one. The first two days were to be double headed by 46100 'Royal Scot' & 'Black Five' 44871. Unfortunately 44871 was declared failed on the eve of the tour, though we would see the class 5 make a return for day three, due to fantastic work by Ian Riley's team. With the temporary failure of 44871, this would mean 46100 would have to front the tour for the first two days.
The scheduled route for the first two days which would include the notorious Devon & Cornwall Hills, a route where taking chances is not recommended. This meant that a diesel locomotive would need to be attached at the rear to provide assistance if needed.
The main debate amongst linesiders was whether the crew would allow the class 7 'Royal Scot' to take all 10 coaches over the gruelling gradients, with the diesel just taking it's weight ? Many were sceptical, including myself ! Even in steam days, 10 coaches for a class 7 was against the rules over the Devon Banks ! The title of the video may give the answer to the question away, but in our opinion and many others '46100' did reign supreme over Dainton ! Reports from the train did confirm that some assistance was given on the other challenging parts of the route. So in the end we felt lucky to have chosen Dainton, for our main shots over the other tricky sections.
For this year's tour we planned 15 locations, but for our own personal reasons only 11 locations were used. In this video there features 13 scenes which cover the first three days of this mammoth excursion. Locations are listed below and in video.
(Day 1) 46100 - Whiteball, Whiteball Summit, Dainton Bank, Dainton Tunnel
(Day 2) 46100 - Bodmin Parkway, Penkestle downs (Glynn Valley) Combe Fishacre x3 (Dainton Bank) Red Ball, Flax Bourton
    (Day 3) 44871 - Abergavenny & Bromfield
Apologies for the few ruffles of wind on day 2 and the high sensitive sound at 8.32 ! I had lost my Auxiliary cable for my microphone boom and had to use the internal camcorder microphone.
A massive thanks to Railway Touring Company & West Coast Railways for the huge effort of the operation and execution of this gargantuan steam tour over the United Kingdom.
I hope you enjoy the coverage.

Cracking footage Liam , the planned locations made for stunning shots . I bet you are glad you invested in the wind blimp for Dainton alone !!

+TheStephengthompson Cheers Steve, the majority of planned shots went to plan, so that was nice, and would of been lost without my boom at Dainton on Tuesday ! Funnily enough I lost my aux cable on Wednesday, and had to make do with the internal microphone, which did a decent job.

+MI Rail Yes, still can't get over how bad last year's was ! Good to see the passengers rewarded for sticking with it again, if they did indeed booked again.

Nice idea to show the exit from Whiteball Tunnel, particularly well timed as steam was kept on until it was out of the tunnel.
Nice shot at 6:09 too just after the train has gone past of the Merlin helicopter and a circling buzzard. And another one at 9:52! Fabulous shot at 8:05 through the curves!

Superb footage Liam, well planned and executed, great variety of places and superb performances by both locos - I particularly liked the tunnel exits and the shots rounding the curves, similar to Andrei's comments - what else can one ask for?
Out of interest could I ask you what cam and ext mic you are using? I think you showed me at Penrith but I've forgotten.
Great work and a joy to watch and enjoy! Thanks. Ken

+Ken Browne Thanks very much Ken, your feedback is much welcomed ! I have now stepped up to 4K camcorder and have brought myself a new Panasonic VXF990, which so far is looking great ! The microphone is a Rode videomic, which situated inside my Rode Blimp, which keeps out the wind ! Hope this helps, Regards, Liam

Wow that's top class kit Liam and I'm sure you'll get tremendous results using it! I too have a Rode Videomic but it seems to be incompatible with my x920 camcorder 📹. I've looked up reports online and it seems I may have been better going for a Rode Stereomic instead. However I'm still investigating and experimenting. Onwards and upwards as they say!! Cheers. Ken

Ken, we also have x920 and the Rode Videomic and it is compatible !

+Marsh Steam Videos™ that's very interesting Liam. I'll have to revisit that issue and perhaps have a chat with my friend Bob Masterman as he has an x920 and I believe it's a Rode Videomic he has. That's very helpful info and thanks for it Liam! I did have some sound issues but it turned out to be the format I was using to render the vids. I now get perfect sound results using MPEG-4 and that's solved all the probs. perhaps that's been part of the prob with the Videomic? be in touch. best wishes. Ken

    • @MarshSteamVideosTM
      @MarshSteamVideosTM  8 років тому

Quite possibly Ken ! MP4 is the format that I use.
