Working on technologies that won't be realized for decades as technologies advance and by the time they do we will be looking to a 7th gen, but they are far from a 6th gen fighter. They are using F-22's to test new tech for 6th gen fighters. Skunk Works is working on the SR-72 but there isn't a completed 6th gen fighter being hidden and flying around. We are years behind schedule on just completing the T-7A Redhawk. Once it's out of testing it will take 10 years to replace the T-38 fleet. So, agreed they are working on 7th gen tech but I would say that's because it's so far ahead the technologies are concepts with ideas on how to build them but technology needs to advance. 6th gen will have the tech of 5th and be improved upon but the main focus is command and control drone wing men. The F-35 will be upgraded to function with 6th gen tech as fighter pilots are considered more of sensor operators than fighter pilots in the F-35. I'm witnessing this first hand as I'm involved in developing our training right now with the USAF. It's not some big secret either. It's actually coming in perfect timing as everyone knows we have pilot shortages both in commercial and military spaces, though it's not a lack of qualified applicants but many other factors. Drone wing man would be absolutely helpful. There are only so many military contractors the USA uses and they are all severely behind schedule.

I've also read this, just don't remember where. Some of the information I had indicated that a 7th gen platform would be highly modular and could be changed out between missions, based on specific Intel. It also suggested that the first true operational 7th gen aircraft could eventually support complete autonomy with out a pilot, but the very first planes would likely be field tested in a situation similar to the loyal wingman system. I suspect there will be piloted aircraft that "quarterback" the operational space with 7th gen likely having advanced risk and threat assessment, with an option to engage a target autonomously. It is crazy how fast the US is from the point of R&D to operational programs. No wonder the spies from China work so hard to steal all our stuff. They are always 1 generation behind, with their new stuff looking like stuff we were using 5 years ago.

Fighting in space (off topic but logical next step) is going to be very hard to do in leo.. because you have to maintain orbital speeds to keep from falling back to earth. Changing directions will be very difficult at 17000mph and will generally take time and fuel. Slowing down is a death sentence and also speeding up will sling you out of orbit.. fighting in space will be more hinged around destroying satellites than dogfighting in space. At least until we figure out some kind of antigravity (this will be difficult because gravity is not a force).

    • @mikemurphy5898
      @mikemurphy5898 2 місяці тому +5

Gravity isn't a force (according to Einstein) but matter warps space and matter is made of energy, so it seems logical to me that if you can produce and shape enough energy, it should be doable.
When we'll be able to do that is a whole other question, but gravitational waves have proven that space is maleable, so that's encouraging.
And ofc, you also have people like Bob Lazar who claim to have worked on antigravity propulsion tech at S4. He said gravity is a wave that has a long and short acting component (gravity A and B). Gravity A is what we think of normally and Gravity B is a gravity wave that extends out from the nucleus of an atom. Element 115 is necessary to use in propagation of this wave because it's the first atom with a large enough nucleus that the gravitational wave B actually extends past the electron cloud and can be interacted with to be amplified or taken out of phase, etc. If that's true, it'll probably be even longer since we are no where near creating a stable isotope of 115, let alone large enough quantities that it's actually usable for anything practical in a lab, let alone space travel.

What worries me is the marriage of AI and Quantum computers, are the loyal wingmen safe, or could they be taken over by AI from a foreign power?
This is something others have mentioned that our best encryption is no match for quantum computers, throw AI into the mix and we could have some serious problems.

Also satellites that kill other satellites.
Weapons that fall directly from space and destroy ships at sea.
It's further along than most people think.
Already a few countries have tested hypersonic missiles and crafts.

the 5th generation or 6th generation wud better more agile performance if the designs did not include any pilot windows or glass.. You can now just install converging cameras so the pilot only need to see LED displays similar to the 360deg cameras on modern day cars & trucks.. They can even choose to view the under belly of the aircraft if selected.. A real situational awareness

For example, skin walker ranch spirit phenomenon routinely hacks Iphones. What if these anomalies can hack any technology and our enemies clone that tech. Anything is possible. Our weapons can become our nightmare if we loose control.

it would even be ideal that there's not even a pilot on board.. Could you imagine the maneuvers the fighter jets if there's no live pilots on board.. They will have a strategic plane that never needs togo sleep or rest.. The fighter jets can go beyond MACH5 without pilot' fatigue.. The plane can just flip without worries.. Although AI assisted, the pilot just sits on a simulator on the base & makes all the flight decisions on the ground... No danger of casualty...

Frank Kendall said that NGAD needs to have twice the operational radius of the F35 at the same cost as the F35. This is because China has developed ultra-long-range anti-aircraft missiles that can target tankers. The weapon bay can be the same size as the F35 because the CCA (Collaborative Combat Aircraft) carries the missiles.
The US Navy also needs a fighter with twice the operational radius of the FA18. Stealth is the lowest requirement for carrier-based aircraft because the weapon bay is difficult to install and remove missiles.
The new design of GCAP meets the requirements of both the US Air Force and the US Navy. The US Navy needs twin-engine aircraft.
Let's work with Boeing to get the US Air Force and US Navy on board.
Lockheed Martin could create a revised NGAD by enlarging the wings and fuel tanks of the F-35.
Fighters would have to visually identify friendly targets with broken identification friend or foe systems before firing a missile.
If missile launches were left to the Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA), there would be no need for a weapons bay, reducing manufacturing and maintenance costs.
