I retired from the Navy back about 5 years ago with 33 years of as a Master Chief Petty officer in charge of onboard at least 5 onboard galleys that served hungry sailors and Marines from breakfast to the mid-rats meal at midnight. 15000 per day with and snacks between meals, I was proud of the contribution I made to my fellow Sailors. It was a fun time.
I had the honor and privilege to serve in the US Navy from Jan 1985- Dec 1988. I was assigned to EA-6B Squadron VAQ-134 (Go GARUDAS) at NAS Whidbey Island, WA. We deployed on board the USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70), a mighty aircraft carrier/warship. I have only positive memories of my time in the military, especially my time aboard the mighty Carl Vinson....what an incredible experience!!! My family and I are indebted to and grateful for all of our nation's sons and daughters who serve in our nation's world-class Navy. For several years, I worked for a company that was subcontractors of the Navy and I've been on several ships including the destroyer USS Stethem and it really doesn't matter what ship you're on, it's incredibly easy to get lost on a ship and it's really, REALLY hot on a ship especially in the crews quarters! I've got LOTS of respect for the Sailors and Marines that live on these ships for months at a time and defend our country. It was a great honor meeting many of our servicemen and women and becoming close friends with many of them. Outside of the heat and how easy it is to get lost, I really enjoyed that job and being able to see what life is like on board the ships I got to see. They are truly amazing!
I had the distinct honor of serving in the U.S. Navy from 1986 to 1990. My time with the F/A-18 Hornet Squadron VFA-25 (Go Fist of the Fleet!) at Naval Air Station Lemoore, CA, was unforgettable. We deployed on the USS Nimitz (CVN-68), a true symbol of naval power. Every moment spent on that aircraft carrier was filled with pride and camaraderie. I hold nothing but cherished memories from my service, and I am immensely grateful to all who wear the uniform and dedicate themselves to protecting our great nation. I served for 7 years as an MAA. I never went on a ship, so I love learning about what it was like through documentaries, LOL. I was a "sand sailor". Served in Guam, Bahrain, Afghanistan, and the Naval Academy.
Three carriers I served on,😮, USS Enterprise, Midway and Independence🤩, my old school trio :) but I loved every minute of my 20 year career from May 1984 to July 2004🤩. All I have is my most fondest memories of my shipmates/extended family. I plan to enlist in the Navy very soon as an AD - Aviation Machinists Mate.. I’ve heard that they have both sea and shore duties but i really want to maximize the best I can get out of my contract/ rate given that it is an aviation rate at that but... in other words: I know it’s probably left best to my dream sheet but are there other ways I can maximize my chances of landing a spot on an Aircraft Carrier?? I really want to be on one of those floating cities, so many moving parts, so many intricacies and logistics, i like that and i really want to be a part of it all. Any help, advice, or response will be highly appreciated! Thanks if you’ve read this far.. -jake
2004 I was a security guard for the destroyer Saratoga, when it sailed into the port of Bar, then the country of the SRJ. Man, it was a five-star hotel, but a hotel armed to the teeth. America has awesome ships

You could show more about the rough seas, some people I tell really do not know what it means like to list back and forth and to have waves going completely across the bow. I was a HT/DC search and rescue swimmer.

I nearly joined the Royal Navy when I left school at 16 but I preferred the "man, boots, rifle" mantra and joined the British Army instead. If I had joined the Royal Navy, I'd have gone for the submarine service, its the ultimate test of a sailor.

@@arturomeaux4158I was on the USS Randolph C vs 15 during the Cuban chris in the 60s. We were headed to the North Atlantic. But we we were turned around And headed. We were told there was a submarine out there to be on the lookout for it. Someone eating in pilots were coming in off of patrol and they spotted Periscope right on our fantail it was a world war II Russian submarine. That was really scary. He could have put a fish in us anytime.
💙 I enlisted in the Army, I did consider the Navy when Battleships were still commissioned because I wanted to be on those 16" Guns. I became a 13 Bravo Cannon Crewman on the 8" 203mm M110A2 SP Howitzer which was sufficient enough for me.

i remember the nimitz and forrestal in Naples bay, with the Vesuvius volcano as a backdrop. with the Vesuvius volcano as a backdrop. beautiful scenery, then they took us to the ruins of Pompeii, then to Sorrento and Capri together with the Forrestal officers, I was 20 years old and since then I have never seen a similar paradise and never eaten better pizza than the one I enjoyed in Naples.
My dad was in the navy in the 60s. He absolutely loved it! For all the sailors 💙. I myself am very proud of each and every one of you. Keep up the awesome work!
I was on the USS Camden when the Ranger collided with a merchant ship. We had just left Singapore. Our captain called General Quarters and frightened everyone. I could see the Ranger from my GQ station. She wasn't far away. It was still dark, and all her lights were on. She came alongside the next day. There was a big hole in her bow. We all had to turn around and go back to the PI.

Some of the best sleep I’ve ever had was on the LHD Kearsage. My rack was on the very top 4th one up, right near the AC. I was in the Marine Corp so we didn’t have any jobs on float. We slept most of the day, played spades all freaking night. It was the best way to cross the Atlantic to the Med. Traveled the Suez Canal and didn’t get much love from our Muslim friends, through the Red Sea, up the Persian gulf, and invaded Iraq two months later. It was a great period in life. I would encourage every young person to strongly consider military service, just to simply travel and see the world. There couldn’t be a better way to start your adult life. My family and kids are receiving the benefits of it now. I mean now my two children are going to the University of Alabama. Once they graduate, their friends will have 100’s of thousands in debt. My two won’t have any.
I was in the Norwegian Navy in my youth, and once we had a gigantic, american submarine visiting! It was like five times longer and several times wider and taller than our own, tiny subs, that only had 20 officers and two privates, haha. But they were meant for different tasks, of course, no trans- atlantic voyages or anything, just short trips in our " fjords"..:)😊
I have had the privilege of watching the restoration of a destroyer in Galveston TX. Such an honor to see that project. We also have a park (Sea Wolf Park) with an old destroyer and sub.

I served on DD950, a Forest Sherman class destroyer as an ETR-3 from 1971-1973. We were home ported in Pearl Harbor and we did one WESTPAC while I was onboard. We mainly provided H and I support up and down the gun line. We also acted as a target to draw shore battery when Haiphong Harbor was being blockaded and mined.. We had a great crew and a tremendous commanding officer: Cmdr W.C. Deal. These years in service were the most important years of my young life (19) at that time. I'd do it all over again, with the same crew, in a blink of an eye. Go Navy!💙

I served in the Australian Navy and I had the privilege of being about 400 metres away from a American aircraft carrier and was able to see aircraft take off and land at sea.
Had a friend that was enlisted in the Navy, he said the hardest part when getting back to land, was adjusting to color. He said all he saw for months at a time was different shades of gray.
I was able to do a Tiger Cruise on the Nimitz last year 2023 with my son. Was a blast seeing a ship that big move. I was stationed on a DD and FF when I was active duty in the 80's - 90's so seeing this close up was great.
Ignoring the enhancement of humans will inevitably be a key downfall when countries in conflict hold no barrier to this idea. My father served in the Navy; entering Pappy Boyington's squadron and retiring from service within the Pentagon in mid-60s. Dad was versatile, but it was the passing of his only sibling, a sister and her death at 22, who was assisting on a Navy ambulance having roll off a mountain that I believe really motivated my father’s career.

Back in my day sailors died from total bordem and dope more likely than anything else.. Or they found life in another place and never returned... I kinda envied a few of em till heard what happened to em years later
I love watching on deck footage of launches and landings when it's full on, it's like a well drilled dance. The coloured shirts and jackets they wear to show which job they do is a really clever idea. I also enjoy watching the ship to ship replenishment procedures as it is extremely complex and dangerous but they make it look like a walk in the park....
There ain't nothin like the Navy life opening a door and almost getting french kissed when ya run into someone forehead to forehead or when U R on the other side of a steel door and it totally mashes your beak, I mean nose. And like when the hangar decks up top gets swamped out and ya slide genitals first into something really solid like even your own tool box... ain't nothin like the Navy life cept when ya get to them secluded island resupply areas and ya realize the girls are all naturally the way they are not on dope and stuff and they actually have a natural chest... Its all good from there.. Stay too long with one of the natives some big Marines will be along to haul ya back to reality nightmares..
Same here. I love watching the almost ballet like work as the deck crews send our GREAT Navy pilots off and back onto the ships deck. I was US Army 1966 thru 1973 and in many ways envied Navy guys and gals having plenty of good, well prepared food, a dry rack, close at hand medical facilities and recreation nearby. BUT floating over the seas of the world scared hell out of me (I was afraid of big fish!) and since my Step Dad was retired AF I didn't want to join that branch. No,, I wasn't overly disappointed that I was Army Artillery BUT,,,,, 🙂Loved this documentary.
Sleep deprivation and improved Sea Pay…During deployments it’s not uncommon to work 8hrs and stand 4 to 6 hrs watches. Then there are training evolutions and other duties that can make for 18 to 20 hour work days. Leaving precious little time to eat, sleep and personal hygiene. We currently have unsustainable high expectations for junior staff and we work them hard and long. After 4 years of this a large majority bail and so goes our large investment in them. Sea/shore rotations for some ratings are crazy bad. If we want to improve retention we need to ensure that the crew get at a minimum 8hrs down time every 24 hrs and pay them to stay at sea.
I'm sure nobody can get 8 hrs rest a day esp in hostile environments but 6 hrs seems reasonable guess they should have preparations for pple who can't sleep w lil ambien or seroquel that make worst in insomniac get well needed rest
On the Enterprise we had the traditional 12 and 12 watch or port and starboard watches. in port it was the 1,1,1,36 watch. Some of the crew had either 18 hour watches like the air department, or weapons had a 20 hour watch. We also had box lunches made with two sandwiches, piece of fruit,and a can of juice. One of the sandwiches was always SPAM. And up to this date I can not look at a can of spam and not think of the ship. UGH!
It never ceases to amaze me that there was some nut out there who actually came up with the crazy idea of taking off supersonic jets off of a 100 foot ship. I managed to put up some flat pack furniture up this weekend where the manufacturers had forgotten to send the instructions and I felt like a genius.
British carriers, the crew are fed on a daily budget of less than 6$ per day as their food needs are run by a private company who budget costs to make a profit, typical British 😡. American carriers wow the crew are taken care of😂.
No they aren’t. The U.S. Navy does things exactly the same way. Powdered milk, instant potatoes, and food from a can that’s heated up, and rubbery soy bean burgers that make McDonald’s seem like a Michelin star restaurant. They spend loads of money on the ships and almost nothing for things related to quality of life for the crew. I spent several years babysitting murderers at a prison and they ate better than we did in the Navy.
Things are cheap because they buy provisions in MAHOOSIVE bulk orders. It's the same in any military around the world........ they're not going to get Marco Pierre White onboard using the finest ingredients on the planet, are they???
6$ a day, wow, even converted to sterling (£, British pounds) that is far more than when I was in the British 🇬🇧 military, I think it was about 69p, and yet we always had excellent quality food, at least we did when the chefs/cooks were service personnel, they were well trained and knowledgeable about food and dietary needs, but I believe that most culinary activities are now contracted out and, as you rightly said, they are not a good option, they are about money and not the service and standards that service personnel should be given, let’s face it if all the contract catering companies provide is “junk” foods it would not take long for the health and fitness levels of personnel to suffer and that would obviously impact on their ability to perform their duties properly.
Your talking out your ass. I'm ex Royal Navy and yes the shops on board make a profit but the profit is put back into welfare on board and ashore. Also we are allowed to drink alcohol on board, as we are treated like adults and not school children.

2004 I was a security guard for the destroyer Saratoga, when it sailed into the port of Bar, then the country of the SRJ. Man, it was a five-star hotel, but a hotel armed to the teeth. America has awesome ships

💙 I served on the USS Caron DD970 in the early 90's. You have summed up life aboard ship perfectly. You could show more about the rough seas, some people I tell really do not know what it means like to list back and forth and to have waves going completely across the bow. I was a HT/DC search and rescue swimmer.

I nearly joined the Royal Navy when I left school at 16 but I preferred the "man, boots, rifle" mantra and joined the British Army instead.
If I had joined the Royal Navy, I'd have gone for the submarine service, its the ultimate test of a sailor.
Proudly served aboard USS Nimitz with VS-24, two Med cruises in the early '80s.
That 5,000 people can cooperate for such an extended period is a miracle.

And headed. We were told there was a submarine out there to be on the lookout for it. Someone eating in pilots were coming in off of patrol and they spotted Periscope right on our fantail it was a world war II Russian submarine. That was really scary. He could have put a fish in us anytime.

💙 I enlisted in the Army, I did consider the Navy when Battleships were still commissioned because I wanted to be on those 16" Guns. I became a 13 Bravo Cannon Crewman on the 8" 203mm M110A2 SP Howitzer which was sufficient enough for me.

i remember the nimitz and forrestal in Naples bay, with the Vesuvius volcano as a backdrop. with the Vesuvius volcano as a backdrop. beautiful scenery, then they took us to the ruins of Pompeii, then to Sorrento and Capri together with the Forrestal officers, I was 20 years old and since then I have never seen a similar paradise and never eaten better pizza than the one I enjoyed in Naples.
My dad was in the navy in the 60s. He absolutely loved it! For all the sailors 💙. I myself am very proud of each and every one of you. Keep up the awesome work!

I was on the USS Camden when the Ranger collided with a merchant ship. We had just left Singapore. Our captain called General Quarters and frightened everyone. I could see the Ranger from my GQ station. She wasn't far away. It was still dark, and all her lights were on. She came alongside the next day. There was a big hole in her bow. We all had to turn around and go back to the PI.

Some of the best sleep I’ve ever had was on the LHD Kearsage. My rack was on the very top 4th one up, right near the AC. I was in the Marine Corp so we didn’t have any jobs on float. We slept most of the day, played spades all freaking night. It was the best way to cross the Atlantic to the Med. Traveled the Suez Canal and didn’t get much love from our Muslim friends, through the Red Sea, up the Persian gulf, and invaded Iraq two months later. It was a great period in life. I would encourage every young person to strongly consider military service, just to simply travel and see the world. There couldn’t be a better way to start your adult life. My family and kids are receiving the benefits of it now. I mean now my two children are going to the University of Alabama. Once they graduate, their friends will have 100’s of thousands in debt. My two won’t have any.

I was in the Norwegian Navy in my youth, and once we had a gigantic, american submarine visiting! It was like five times longer and several times wider and taller than our own, tiny subs, that only had 20 officers and two privates, haha. But they were meant for different tasks, of course, no trans- atlantic voyages or anything, just short trips in our " fjords"..:)😊

I served on DD950, a Forest Sherman class destroyer as an ETR-3 from 1971-1973. We were home ported in Pearl Harbor and we did one WESTPAC while I was onboard. We mainly provided H and I support up and down the gun line. We also acted as a target to draw shore battery when Haiphong Harbor was being blockaded and mined.. We had a great crew and a tremendous commanding officer: Cmdr W.C. Deal. These years in service were the most important years of my young life (19) at that time. I'd do it all over again, with the same crew, in a blink of an eye. Go Navy!💙

I served in the Australian Navy and I had the privilege of being about 400 metres away from a American aircraft carrier and was able to see aircraft take off and land at sea.

Had a friend that was enlisted in the Navy, he said the hardest part when getting back to land, was adjusting to color. He said all he saw for months at a time was different shades of gray.
Yes there R more than 50 shades of Navy Gray. None of em you want to remember either. Not fit for a basement dungeon...
I was able to do a Tiger Cruise on the Nimitz last year 2023 with my son. Was a blast seeing a ship that big move. I was stationed on a DD and FF when I was active duty in the 80's - 90's so seeing this close up was great.

Ignoring the enhancement of humans will inevitably be a key downfall when countries in conflict hold no barrier to this idea. My father served in the Navy; entering Pappy Boyington's squadron and retiring from service within the Pentagon in mid-60s. Dad was versatile, but it was the passing of his only sibling, a sister and her death at 22, who was assisting on a Navy ambulance having roll off a mountain that I believe really motivated my father’s career.

We had one on the Enterprise in the late 70's. The idiot was killed by huffing refrigerant . His body was found laying next to the tanks dead.

I love watching on deck footage of launches and landings when it's full on, it's like a well drilled dance. The coloured shirts and jackets they wear to show which job they do is a really clever idea.
I also enjoy watching the ship to ship replenishment procedures as it is extremely complex and dangerous but they make it look like a walk in the park....
There ain't nothin like the Navy life opening a door and almost getting french kissed when ya run into someone forehead to forehead or when U R on the other side of a steel door and it totally mashes your beak, I mean nose. And like when the hangar decks up top gets swamped out and ya slide genitals first into something really solid like even your own tool box... ain't nothin like the Navy life cept when ya get to them secluded island resupply areas and ya realize the girls are all naturally the way they are not on dope and stuff and they actually have a natural chest... Its all good from there.. Stay too long with one of the natives some big Marines will be along to haul ya back to reality nightmares..
Same here. I love watching the almost ballet like work as the deck crews send our GREAT Navy pilots off and back onto the ships deck. I was US Army 1966 thru 1973 and in many ways envied Navy guys and gals having plenty of good, well prepared food, a dry rack, close at hand medical facilities and recreation nearby. BUT floating over the seas of the world scared hell out of me (I was afraid of big fish!) and since my Step Dad was retired AF I didn't want to join that branch. No,, I wasn't overly disappointed that I was Army Artillery BUT,,,,, 🙂Loved this documentary.

Sleep deprivation and improved Sea Pay…During deployments it’s not uncommon to work 8hrs and stand 4 to 6 hrs watches. Then there are training evolutions and other duties that can make for 18 to 20 hour work days. Leaving precious little time to eat, sleep and personal hygiene. We currently have unsustainable high expectations for junior staff and we work them hard and long. After 4 years of this a large majority bail and so goes our large investment in them. Sea/shore rotations for some ratings are crazy bad. If we want to improve retention we need to ensure that the crew get at a minimum 8hrs down time every 24 hrs and pay them to stay at sea.

I'm sure nobody can get 8 hrs rest a day esp in hostile environments but 6 hrs seems reasonable guess they should have preparations for pple who can't sleep w lil ambien or seroquel that make worst in insomniac get well needed rest
On the Enterprise we had the traditional 12 and 12 watch or port and starboard watches. in port it was the 1,1,1,36 watch. Some of the crew had either 18 hour watches like the air department, or weapons had a 20 hour watch. We also had box lunches made with two sandwiches, piece of fruit,and a can of juice. One of the sandwiches was always SPAM. And up to this date I can not look at a can of spam and not think of the ship. UGH!
It never ceases to amaze me that there was some nut out there who actually came up with the crazy idea of taking off supersonic jets off of a 100 foot ship. I managed to put up some flat pack furniture up this weekend where the manufacturers had forgotten to send the instructions and I felt like a genius.

British carriers, the crew are fed on a daily budget of less than 6$ per day as their food needs are run by a private company who budget costs to make a profit, typical British 😡. American carriers wow the crew are taken care of😂.
No they aren’t. The U.S. Navy does things exactly the same way. Powdered milk, instant potatoes, and food from a can that’s heated up, and rubbery soy bean burgers that make McDonald’s seem like a Michelin star restaurant. They spend loads of money on the ships and almost nothing for things related to quality of life for the crew. I spent several years babysitting murderers at a prison and they ate better than we did in the Navy.
Things are cheap because they buy provisions in MAHOOSIVE bulk orders. It's the same in any military around the world........ they're not going to get Marco Pierre White onboard using the finest ingredients on the planet, are they???

6$ a day, wow, even converted to sterling (£, British pounds) that is far more than when I was in the British 🇬🇧 military, I think it was about 69p, and yet we always had excellent quality food, at least we did when the chefs/cooks were service personnel, they were well trained and knowledgeable about food and dietary needs, but I believe that most culinary activities are now contracted out and, as you rightly said, they are not a good option, they are about money and not the service and standards that service personnel should be given, let’s face it if all the contract catering companies provide is “junk” foods it would not take long for the health and fitness levels of personnel to suffer and that would obviously impact on their ability to perform their duties properly.
Your talking out your ass. I'm ex Royal Navy and yes the shops on board make a profit but the profit is put back into welfare on board and ashore. Also we are allowed to drink alcohol on board, as we are treated like adults and not school children.
